The Ruin as an Opportunity for Correction - Selected Excerpts from the Sources

Reader: We are reading from a selection from our sources the topic is “The Ruin as an Opportunity for Correction” this is a period of time between the Narrows the time that resembles the Ruin the shattering the breaking of the vessels and the first one is the breaking of the vessels.

M. Laitman: Breaking of the vessels, and the first one is the Breaking of the vessels. So, the stage before the correction is as written. Yes, so before the correction, we need to scrutinize the vessel where it is exactly, where it took place, in what vessels, at what times, in what states. Therefore, here we have a few stages in the lesson. So, we'll begin with the Breaking of the Vessels.

Reader: The Breaking of the Vessels, excerpt number one, Baal HaSulam writes in “Or HaBohir.”

Reading: (01:30) 1. Baal HaSulam, Ohr HaBahir, “The Breaking of the Vessels”

The breaking of the vessels. The correction that comes through this preliminary breaking in the way that the breaking itself is a great correction. Some interpreted that it is a corruption in order to correct. However, this phrasing is incorrect, for we should ask about these words, “Why should He spoil and then correct? Let Him not spoil and He will not need to correct.” However, the thing is that the whole point of the correction and the great benefit that the Creator contemplated in the beginning of creation would not have come to the world were it not through spoiling the vessels in this manner, and whose entire correction is in the matter of clarifying the matter from the beginning, that they were never spoiled.

M. Laitman: That's what Baal HaSulam writes in relation to the breaking of the vessels. Questions, I don't see any, and yes, there is.

Question (Woman Spa): (03:18) How can our Ten want more and more the correction from the Creator?

M. Laitman: We need to be as close as possible to the Creator, and then try to observe all the conditions that Baal HaSulam writes, and then correct. Accordingly, we can connect and adhere to the Creator and listen to what exactly He wants to tell us.

Question (Turkiye 1): (04:27) What is the point in the Ten from which we begin the correction?

M. Laitman: After we feel that we are in a ruin which we cannot correct, so we seek the reason for correction, and from it onward, we begin to work on the correction of the vessels.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (05:20) He says here that their whole correction happens to clarify, they were never spoiled?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What does it mean?

M. Laitman: That's what appears to us as corrupted vessels; they're not corrupted. And that we need to correct them. So, we don't need to correct them. But everything is arranged that way so that we can recognize the vessels in a true way, as they are.

Student: But the correction seems to be like from the beginning, like in advance. If it's in the end, okay, we discovered it, but how can you discover it in advance that we were never spoiled?

M. Laitman: It is because we need to become aware of what are the corrupted vessels, and where and in what form we need to correct them. All in all, we need to organize the vessels such that we will scrutinize the extent to which they are indeed good vessels, and that the Creator created everything in that way. And we need to reveal them in such a way. And that is all. Then, from the lack of correction, we come to correction.

Student: What is this to begin with? What is this clarifying the matter from the beginning, that they were never spoiled?

M. Laitman: There are a few reasons here. But truly, this idea of spoiling would be easier if they weren't corrupted, and we need to correct them through our actions. Our entire work in the vessels is only to bring them to correction.

Question (Unity 2): (08:52) What is this state that comes to a person when you see the friends clean, pure, completely corrected, such that the great force comes to work in order to be together with them? What work do we need to do to come to such a state?

M. Laitman: The most important thing which is necessary for us is to discover that everything taking place for us takes place because we are distant from one another. We cannot be together in supporting each other, and we have no other opportunity to come closer to the corrected state other than awakening in us the need for correction, meaning to come closer. And then we will succeed in everything.

Student: When we see that the friends are already corrected, that they are truly pure and corrected, then what in that moment do we have to do?

M. Laitman: Corrected? We need to determine that we are not corrected according to our root, according to the Creator. And then, we will already have a clear understanding of what we can correct.

Question (PT 19): (10:51) He says the shattering is a great correction, and there are those who say that it is a corruption in order to correct. What is the shattering, and what is a correction? What is this breaking, and what is the correction?

M. Laitman: Breaking is the revelation of the corruption. And only after we reveal the corruption, we can turn to the Creator and request correction.

Student: What is he talking about? Is this within our relationships that they are in the Ten? Can you do a correction of the breaking in the relationships? Where is this corruption, where is it revealed, expressed?

M. Laitman: It becomes expressed in the Ten.

Student: In the Ten itself?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Woman Europe): (12:13) If the shattering is corruption, correction, not corruption, then how do we have to feel the feeling of the corruption that we have in the environment around us?

M. Laitman: We simply need, according to our studies, to read those excerpts that Rabash determined, and from that, we will understand more how we can come closer to the corrected state, what exactly we can correct, and where is the corruption and the correction. And that is how we will be able to relate the extent of corruption and correction to each and every Ten.

Question (Kyiv 1): (13:41) From the excerpt, it is clear that the correction is possible only upon the corruption. And for us to attain a new degree of connection, what degree of corruption needs to be achieved?

M. Laitman: That it is in corruption.

Student: Let’s say in our Ten, the work is every day, but in order to reach a certain degree of connection, additional connection, more than usual, it seems from this excerpt that we have to discover a greater corruption. So, what corruption needs to be revealed in order to connect upon it even more?

M. Laitman: That same corruption that we are in. And then we will be aimed directly at the correction of the corruption, of the breaking.

Student: And how will we discover this breaking that we are in, in addition to what we are feeling every day?

M. Laitman: We need to understand clearly what is the corrected vessel, what is the broken, corrupted vessel, and to put together that connection, a good connection between the parts of the whole vessel and between the parts of the broken vessel. And then we'll be able to feel upon ourselves, in our vessels, in our desires, what is the broken vessel and what is the corrected vessel. And then we'll have the clear depiction of what we need to ask from the Creator.

Question (Woman Turkiye 7): (16:11) It's written in the excerpt that the vessels won't be corrupted forever. What makes a person see the vessels as broken?

M. Laitman: When a person scrutinizes his connection in the group, what can he do? Where can he advance them? At that time, he basically opens an internal force that exists in his vessel, and out of this, he understands where he needs to advance, where to advance them. And by this, he begins to work.

Question (Karmiel): (17:31) Is the process of the shattering, does it keep going? Or did it end? Or does it keep going as long as the correction didn't happen?

M. Laitman: Yes. In spirituality, every action that has to happen continues until all of it is revealed. And therefore, only after all the broken vessels are revealed, we will be able to say that this is the last corruption, and after it begins the order of the correction until the final correction.

Question (Woman Rehovot 1): (18:38) When the corruptions are revealed in the Ten, what is each one's responsibility? How should we relate to corruption?

M. Laitman: In our connection, we need to discover where our vessels are opposite from connection, meaning reveal the corruptions. And accordingly, we should then ask for corrections. To pray. Basically, this is the order of our corrections.

Student: I heard that you said that after we feel that we're in the shattering and can't fix it, we search for the reason. What is the reason that we feel we're in the shattering?

M. Laitman: That we see our desires, our relationships corrupted. Each one thinks only of his own benefit and sees the friends, views the friends with criticism.

Question (Hungarian-Polish): (20:25) How can we see that there is nothing to correct except ourselves?

M. Laitman: Bit by bit, it is revealed during our work, as we discover more and more that the corruption we are revealing is within us, and as a result, we get into it more and more until we reveal all the details in it.

Question (Latin 4): (21:25) How can we take our daily falls as an opportunity for spiritual growth instead of seeing it as a failure?

M. Laitman: I would say this: we need during the day to collect all our states, see how far we are from one another or close to one another, and in this way we will see what we need to do. What's the other question?

Reader: You can choose another group.

Question (Moscow 6): (22:50) How to prepare for the revelation of the shattering?

M. Laitman: The more we are connected among ourselves, the more we can delve into revealing the shattering between us and feeling it. By this, we will be able to shorten our way, advance more quickly, shorten our movement toward correction, and in this way bring the shattering closer to us and correct it.

Question (Haifa 1): (23:54) When it's written that the vessels were never really corrupted, that's on behalf of the Creator that He created the created being in the whole state, it's only in our perception, from our vessels that we think they're shattered?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Woman Heb 1): (24:27) When can we sustain the connection between us constantly? What does it depend on?

M. Laitman: We will be able to maintain the connection between us permanently only on condition that this connection is corrected. We will first reveal its corruption, and then we will approach its correction, and in this way we will be able to discover our corrected form and ask for this correction to be revealed and in this way we will really truly reveal it in practice.

Student: Is it a certain quota of limits? What's supposed to happen with effort?

M. Laitman: It's a matter of correction. Very simple. Where the vessel is corrupted, spoiled, that's where it should correct its corruption. And in this way, in this way, correct it.

Question (Philippines): (26:26) We can pray directly as an individual to the Creator. But it is also said that before we can connect to the Creator, we have to connect first to our group. Can we be clarified on this? Thank you. First we have to connect to the group and pray, or can we directly to the Creator?

M. Laitman: No, we cannot turn directly to the Creator. We cannot turn to Him directly. We don't have what to approach Him with. We need the distance between us. We first need to reveal the distance between us. And then connect around that form, that we are broken and far from each other. And bring ourselves to the Creator in a corrected way, so He will correct it. In the right way, so He will correct it.

Question (New York 2): (28:11) How can we measure our closeness to the friends?

M. Laitman: According to the sensation of distance or connection, to the extent that we want to be connected toward that state. We can feel ourselves disconnected from each other. And in this way demand correction.

Question (Turkiye 1): (29:05) Can we say that every shattering, is the beginning of a correction, and every correction is the beginning of a shattering that comes after it?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: If so, how can I advance step by step from shattering to correction, shattering to correction?

M. Laitman: Very simple. All the corruption in us are revealed one at a time. And we reveal them from lighter to heavier, and this is how we also correct ourselves, from light shattering to greater shattering. And that's how it is until the end of correction. We need to pray about this, ask the Creator to show us what is the corrected state. And in this way we will advance. To the end of correction.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (30:39) What's the difference between shattered and corrupted?

M. Laitman: The difference is that a broken vessel feels itself as if it's not corrupted. And it doesn't see in itself any reason to feel itself far from the Creator, opposite from the Creator, and a corrupted vessel feels differently, that it truly needs to correct itself, and specifically in what way his parts are broken and far from each other. And then he reveals them and asks for the strength of correction, the power of correction, by which his broken parts come closer to each other. This is how it happens.

Student: Does one cause the other? Do the corruptions cause breaking?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes.

Question (Woman PT 33): (32:55) What does it mean to study the shattering deeper?

M. Laitman: Delving into learning the shattering means we learn according to the size of the vessels, to what extent we are in the breaking, and accordingly, our prayer may be answered. We will be able to ask the Creator to correct it. That's it.

Reader: We can advance to the second excerpt.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Reader: Rabash explains what the shattering is.

M. Laitman: Let's read it.

Reading: (33:56) 2. RABASH, Article No. 19 (1985)," Come unto Pharaoh – 1"

In spirituality, breaking is similar to breaking a vessel in corporeality. With a physical vessel, if it is broken and you pour into it some liquid, the liquid pours out. Likewise, in spirituality, if a thought of will to receive for oneself enters the Kli, the abundance pours out to the external ones, meaning outside of Kedusha [holiness].

Kedusha means “for the Creator.” Anything outside of “for the Creator” is called Sitra Achra [other side], namely the other side of Kedusha. This is why we say that Kedusha means to bestow, and Tuma’a [impurity] means to receive.

For this reason, we, who were born after the breaking, desire only to receive. Therefore we cannot be given abundance, for it will all certainly go to the side of the Sitra Achra, the other side.

Question (MAK 11): (35:34) If Baal HaSulam says that the shattering didn't exist, so does the will to receive to myself not exist?

M. Laitman: It exists, but not in its actual, real form. We need to understand that our movement forward is based on revealing our states relative to the broken, to the uncorrected vessels. This is why we feel ourselves more and more broken. And that's why our states depend only on what we search in our states, where we want to reach. So, in principle, this is how it turns out. As we approach the broken vessel, and then we begin to kind of analyze it in parts. And then, from the perspective of the shattering between the parts of the vessel, we raise a prayer to the Creator to help us connect, to see the alienation between us, and to see our road clearly. Where are we?

Reader: Number three, by Rabash.

Reading: (38:36) 3. RABASH, Article No. 13 (1990),"What Does It Mean that by the Unification of the Creator and the Shechina, All Iniquities Are Atoned?"

The breaking of the vessels, when there was a mingling of the will to receive for oneself with Kedusha because of which the vessels broke. All the desires to receive that had screens in order to bestow were broken. Also, there was the matter of the sin of the tree of knowledge, which caused holy sparks to fall into the Klipot [shells/peels]. It follows that the breaking of the vessels and the sin of the tree of knowledge caused the creatures that come after, that the will to receive receives its sustenance from ABYA of Klipa [singular of Klipot].

And this is why, by shifting from the side of holiness to the side of the shell, this is what happened to us during the breaking. And by this, all the vessels must be corrected to discover that each vessel is in a desire in order to receive, and after that we can direct ourselves in order to bestow.

Question (Florida): (40:49) If I am a broken vessel and I can't receive the abundance, what do I receive from the Creator? Is there some light that I do receive?

M. Laitman: If a person discovers that he is in a shattered vessel, meaning his screen that he thinks of bestowal in the entire vessel is shattered, and he must correct the screen, fix it.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (41:53) So, do we correct a vessel or build a new vessel?

M. Laitman: Correct. That's called the correction of the vessels.

Student: So, what exactly do we correct?

M. Laitman: The screen.

Student: What does it mean? Why did it break if there is a screen on the desire, and it could bestow in order to bestow, why did it suddenly break?

M. Laitman: There's a desire. And upon that desire, there's a screen that connects all of the parts of the desire together and works from all the desires in that vessel to make it as one desire. Then it's clear that in such a way, that in this way, there cannot be parts that are shattered without connection. That's why our work begins by discovering the parts of our desire that they are shattered, distant, separated from one another. And we need to cause their correction, their connection in this way until they are brought to complete correction.

Student: What is the benefit from the shattering? Correction or adhesion with the Creator?

M. Laitman: Adhesion with the Creator is only attained by the correction.

Student: Is any correction a level of adhesion?

M. Laitman: Every correction is part of the general adhesion of the general vessel that it must attain.

Question (Woman Almaty): (45:11) The stronger we become in the work, the more we see evil. How to justify the Creator that the world is corrected?

M. Laitman: That, we still need to discover that the world to begin with is corrected and afterwards the right prayer to come closer between us and the Creator will come out.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (45:56) It's written here, likewise in spirituality, if a thought of will to receive for oneself enters the vessel, the abundance exits to the outer ones, meaning outside of holiness.

Is there a difference between a thought and an intention, or are they the same?

M. Laitman: The thought is the thought, and the intention is an intention, it's not the same thing.

Question (Woman Rehovot 1): (46:34) When a person is aware that there are corruptions in him, criticism, disregard, control, slander, and he suffers from it, when does the Creator agree, and he raises a prayer, when does the Creator agree to correct these corruptions? How does it happen?

M. Laitman: When a person can raise his prayer to the Creator, and the Creator will answer his prayer and correct a person's relation through the friends to the Creator. And this way the correction will take place.

Student: Is this correction done in the Ten, should I ask the friends, or is each one responsible to correct the corruptions within him? How does it happen? In the Ten, or individually in each one?

M. Laitman: The correction takes place in the general will to receive in the group, and from that general desire, the prayer of all the friends in the group can raise itself to the Creator and ask for correction.

Question (Woman PT 23): (48:27) The work on correcting the shattering is our daily work basically. What's special about these days ahead of us, before us, and to what should we pay special attention?

M. Laitman: These days that we're in, in the process of correction, we need more and more to discover as much as we are distant from one another, and what else we're lacking, so the general will to receive that's in the society of Bnei Baruch, that this will to receive… how can I say it… that this will to receive it will cause nearing from all the individual desires into one desire. And then there will be the end of correction.

Question (Woman Moscow 6): (50:03) Between the Tens, there's no feeling of one vessel. How to work with it?

M. Laitman: You have to work with it. To work, meaning to connect even though there's that ego that exists in every Ten.

Question (Woman Turkie 7): (50:55) How do we know that we succeeded in correcting a broken vessel? How is it expressed?

M. Laitman: By us feeling as much as between us, between the friends of the Ten that there is no more rejection, mutual rejection.

Question (Woman PT 8): (51:28) What exactly is broken? Our thoughts, our feelings, the states we get in life?

M. Laitman: In the end, we're talking about thoughts.

Student: So, how to correct a thought?

M. Laitman: By prayer.

Student: Because a thought, you sometimes artificially start to...

M. Laitman: I don't want to hear your explanation. It's not a place to explain. We need to try to come close in all parts of our vessel into one. That's what we need to do today.

Question (Woman Heb 1): (52:28) So, if I need to correct my relation to others, I can grasp it on a level of thoughts. And here, I begin to think, what do I do with my thought if I ask for correction or not?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes.

Question (Woman Europe): (52:45) What is the screen that is broken? Is it your intention to bestow?

M. Laitman: The vessel is the will to bestow.

Student: The question is, what is the screen that is broken?

M. Laitman: That means that this desire exists in an opposite form of its correction. Meaning that the vessel feels its will to receive, and it wants to realize, to implement that will to receive so that desire it feels thinks it's right. That it's corrected. That it needs to implement it.

Student: Sheila is asking about the screen. The screen that was broken. She wants to know, what is the screen? What is a screen that's broken?

M. Laitman: A shattered screen is a person's relation towards the group. That he feels himself as much as he is distant from them. Distant.

Student: Can I ask another question? When you feel this broken, this separation from the friend, and you prayed to the Creator several times, cried to the Creator several times and nothing is changing. What is the reason for this?

M. Laitman: The reason is that we still didn't reach the whole vessel. The whole deficiency.

Question (Woman Spain 1): (55:35) How should we relate in practice to the alienation that exists between us as a revelation of the shattering?

M. Laitman: In practice, we need to discover our true desire, and to ask that that desire will be corrected. That's what we need to do.

Reader: Rav, we can read another excerpt. Excerpt number four, Rabash writes:

Reading: (56:24) 4. RABASH, Article No. 13 (1990)," The Importance of a Prayer of Many"

We should believe what our sages tell us, that all the pleasures in corporeal delights are but a tiny candle compared to the pleasures that exist in spirituality. As it is written in the Sulam Commentary (“Introduction of The Book of Zohar,” p 173), “This is the meaning of the breaking of the vessels that preceded the creation of the world. Through the breaking of the vessels of Kedusha [holiness/sanctity] and their fall into the separated BYA, holy sparks fell along with them to the Klipot [shells], from which came the pleasures and love of every kind into the domain of the Klipot, which pass them on for man’s reception and for his delight.” It therefore follows that the majority of pleasures are in Kedusha.

M. Laitman: Well? That's it. So say that one thing.

Reader: We are concluding this part. Now, before we move on to reading the Zohar, let's summarize a special lesson we received from Rav.
