Lesson 1918. Apr. 2010

Zohar. Introduction to The Book of Zohar. “The Wisdom on Which the World Stands,” item 20

Lesson 19|18. Apr. 2010
Creation consists of Malchut (the heart/egoism) and Bina (the point in the heart/bestowal) – that is, of two kinds of desires. One draws us toward egoistic pleasures, the other toward spiritual attainment. We are under the influence of the field of the upper light, called Ohr Makif – the surrounding light. If we strive upward toward spiritual development, aligning these two kinds of desires within ourselves, the light gradually builds within us a complete spiritual Partzuf. A properly oriented desire is “caught” by the light, which brings us to the first degree of spiritual attainment. Alongside correction, egoism also grows: Malchut begins to prevail over Bina, leading to the feeling of descent. The only way out of such a state is through further reorientation toward the quality of bestowal, which draws a positive influence from the upper light. Otherwise, the action of the light is felt as negative. If we imagine ourselves placed within a magnetic field, then with the right alignment the field attracts us, but with the wrong one, it repels us. An egoistic orientation of our desires is the source of global problems and disasters: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, plane crashes, outbreaks of nationalism, and so on. Our local conflicts cause changes throughout the entire world. The Creator is the absolute, immutable law of nature. Until we become similar to Him in our qualities, the chain of problems and misfortunes will only intensify. Therefore, the essence of our life lies in the correct direction of our thoughts and intentions. We have no one to blame for what happens except ourselves. Everything depends on us. Our era is the time of universal, global correction, and only this can bring us into harmony with the general force of nature, which will then reveal itself toward us in a benevolent way.
