25. Rabbi Elazar and his father-in-law Rabbi Yosi were walking from Usha to Lod. Rabbi Yosi said to Rabbi Elazar, “Perhaps you heard from your father what is written, ‘And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him’?”
He said to him, “I heard from my father that those were the angels who accompanied him from the beginning, when he walked from the Land of Israel. And who are they? I do not know.” He said to him, “It is very well for you righteous that your mouth speaks like the crown of kingship on the king’s head.”
26. While they were walking, they reached the cave of Lod. They heard a voice saying “Make before me two fawns of a doe, and these were the holy camp that Jacob met before him.”
Rabbi Elazar was excited and regretted in his soul. He said, “Lord of the world, such are His ways; it is better for us not to hear; we hear, and do not know.”
27. A miracle happened to him and he heard a voice saying “They were Abraham and Isaac.” He fell on his face and saw the form of his father. He said to him, “I asked about the two fawns, and I was replied that they were Abraham and Isaac who met Jacob when he was saved from Lavan.”
28. He said to him, “My son, take out your removal and your new litany,” for he was a mouth speaking great things. Moreover, souls meet all the righteous in order to save them, and they are high and holy angels.
29. Isaac was living at that time, but his holy soul was taken to the throne of his lord when he was tied on the altar. Since then, his eyes grew dim.
30. He said to him, “What are we there?” He said to him, “I and you are high angels to entertain with King David the messiah.” He arose. As he was rising, he saw his father-in-law, that the face of Rabbi Elazar shone like the sun.
31. His father-in-law said to him, “Have you heard something knew, or have you looked at the light of the glory, the brightness of Moses?” He said to him, “No, but happy are the righteous, for they are guarded by high and holy camps, as it is written, “For He will charge His angels over you, to guard you in all your ways.”
