Baal HaSulam Foreword to The Book of Zohar. #7
1. Rav’s Introduction: Even though the Creator relates to the created beings in a relation of good and doing good to the good and to the bad with pure love without any differences. However the created beings, according to their desire to attain the Creator, they need to give all kinds of opportunities to have a grip on him different definitions otherwise they wouldn't be able to have a hold on him otherwise they would simply be facing the light of Ein Sof and they can't even have a grip on Ein Sof. What we are studying here from Baal HaSulam is how can we divide our attitude towards the Creator through different discernments, phases, and by that to understand and to feel and to divide the Creator's attitude towards us and our attitude towards the Creator, to degrees and manners. In that way just like with anything, we can then have a hold on him just like when we're born we see that a baby who is born, he doesn't hear, he doesn't see, but he only feels contact, touch, that is the closest thing but at the same time it is the most crude. Later on, bit by bit, it starts to become more and more to become incorporated with all of the other senses, seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touch.
The more he is able to distinguish between all of these influences on him, we see that through that he can become incorporated with the world, he can connect and communicate, and this is how he grows. This is how Baal HaSulam also tries to explain to us how we can be, while being disconnected from the Creator. Nevertheless let us start to see how we can be connected with him. Even though there are such discernments that we cannot yet say that we have them. Colors let's say, Hochma, Bina Zeir Anpin and Malchut which are four colors or other musical sounds that also relate to the upper Sefirot. Nevertheless, according to those discernments that Baal HaSulam gives us we will be able to somehow understand that it is worthwhile for us to develop towards that and the spiritual perception that we want to reach so much, this is how it comes to us. Through sounds, notes, colors, different kinds of sensations, mostly it's through the feeling of light that we are in. In that light there are many discernments, we don't feel the light itself in our eyes, but we need to yearn to distinguish between these upper influences on us like different kinds of light, white, gray, red, and black. This is why we should try nevertheless to awaken within us such discernments as the authors of the Zohar explained to us. This is how they feel it, they feel the Creator's attitude to us.

2. R. (06:33) It has no color but only bestowal which we do not yet perceive. When we perceive it, it already takes on some color, some relation.

(07:14) This means that as the light passes through some Sefira it received some impression from the Sefira and it takes with it that impression that it received from this Sefira that it passed through, and it keeps on going. 5. S. (09:39) How do we even imagine the feeling of this light ?
R. Bestowal from the Creator. What kind of bestowal I don't know, but of course I feel in that a certain relation of mine to the Creator and the Creator to me, that there is something. Some kind of relation, of connection between us. I am under his control, and this is what he wishes to pass on to me to reveal inside of me. When I reach that feeling, I feel that this is the degree, that this is the connection that we have between us for the time being. This connection also awakens me and that I have a connection with the Creator, and I need to advance and strengthen this connection such that it is as though there will be as little difference between us as possible. All and all, that is the purpose to reach a state where the vessel and the light will be as one. Which means that I will not feel in bestowal to the Creator's influence, or his bestowal is something that is foreign to me but rather whatever I get from the Creator only shows me how I am coming closer to him, to the extent to which I annul in him, to the extent that I am willing, and I want to be like him. More than that each and every one of us already have to feel it individually.
S. (11:34) Whenever we learn this part you want us to be aware not to imagine colors and don't get confused?
R. That is true but I don't think that anybody is imagining it as colors. We are already speaking about it. We talked about it. It's not a matter of color or a matter of musical sounds or some sensations. Even the sensations that are seemingly more internal such as joy, sadness, or shame. That too is not precisely correct. In spirituality they take on a different characteristic a spiritual one.
S. (12:24) I wanted to ask about what you said, which is the feeling of the Creator, certain feedback, certain response from him, the feeling of the light from him. That is a one-time thing.
R. That doesn't matter, there are all kinds. There are many different forms in that. It's just like when we connect between us there are different forms somewhere permanent others are momentarily it doesn't matter there are all kinds?
S. As you said, the Sefira, the vessel, is colored, in a certain quality like the light, how to understand how to imagine and feel it?
R. You make yourself sensitive to the Creator's influences. This is called make your will as his will and then according to that the Creator will bring you closer and he will make his will as your will. There is no possibility here even for us in this world, you can sometimes hear something from a person who tells you. look the way that he relates her the way that he relates, and you are not in that same wavelength, you are not tuned to the same frequency, so you don't feel it. This is what you are told here that we need to calibrate ourselves, our emotions such that you will start to discover the Creator. You have to calibrate your emotions towards bestowal, towards love of others, towards connection with the friends so much so, that suddenly you will feel that upon those yearnings you have for it, the Creator starts to play. Truly, that all of these strings like on a guitar or some other musical instrument, you already yearn that the Creator will play on you. He does that. Suddenly you start to feel that you have relations towards the friends, towards humanity, towards the Creator, in such a way that you want to come closer, you want to hear, to embrace, to build more crude vessels or more sensitive subtle ones. You want to touch all of these strings like on a guitar, not a single musical note but a few notes together that you discover. You are willing that the Creator will perform all of these operations on you. You want to be sensitive to how he is playing on you. This is considered that the upper light enters into the Sefirot, the desires and he arranges them in such a way that these desires begin to feel. What does he want to pass on to us? It's like we feel in the ear, let's say that there are all kinds of sounds, and through these sounds we begin to identify what he wants to tell us? It is the same here, in the strings of the heart and in all of the other senses. Even with the sense of touch it could be that it pressures us, strikes us, maybe caresses us, or holds us and so on. It all depends on how much we yearn to develop such senses with the friends until we reach a state where we begin to feel that inside of these inclinations, our yearnings, the Creator is there and he is preparing us for these subtle sensations in order to feel him, to understand him, that is his language.
We receive these things through all of the senses we have in this world, seeing ,hearing, taste, smell, touch. Through those five senses, we receive above them even more in addition to them by expanding them, we begin to feel the Creator's relation to us that is his language. This is how we need to develop like babies when they are born they cannot hear and they cannot see, we can see that from our life. Then gradually through our simulations, we develop for them, we develop their senses. Then they begin to hear more, and they start to see a little bit, maybe not colors but something for now, light versus darkness, and they can also identify the difference between silence and hearing some sound, some strike. Also, when we caress them they begin to feel that their sense of touch is the closest one to us and more and more. This is how we should also develop the senses between us in the ten in order to feel in these senses that we developed between us, the Creator's relation to us. This is called from the love of people to the love of the Creator. This is how it works. Therefore, if a person is not lazy and he wants to arrange himself, then he doesn't despair and he keeps going and he keeps going until he develops his senses in his relations with the others, and through that he begins to feel the Creator's relation to him.
Here there is only one thing that we can say, that one who ultimately reaches the high degrees it is very difficult for him to develop his senses towards others. It's very hard for him to reach a feeling in these senses of the Creator's relation to him. It is difficult. These are usually people who are coarse, crude. They don't understand what it is about, but this actually testifies to the essence of his vessel. It is a great vessel, and you need too many forces to activate this vessel but if a person is not lazy he reaches a state where ultimately he feels that this is what I have to do. I have to. That's it. Then they reach high degrees, one who is greater than his friend, his inclination is greater. There is a lot written about that. That is much as a person has a greater ego, if he prepares it for the perception, reception of the Creator of connection with the Creator than he reaches great vessels and great attainments. Therefore do not despair but rather keep going.
6. S. (21:37) About being lazy, there is logic in not being lazy when you see that overcoming gets you somewhere. But for me I feel it's not getting me anywhere.
R. Just continue, just keep going. I have nothing more to tell you. In your case it is simple. You ask a lot and maybe you do little, so keep performing the actions in practice and demand from the Creator that he will help you to find the connection with the friends.
7. S. (22:30) The four colors, the four states you described, the upper light where there's no distinction between light and vessel but the other three states whenever we come into contact with the upper one it constantly concentrates into one of those colors according to the state. Is that correct?
R. Let's say it's correct you will reach such a contact and then it will be clear to you.
S. I noticed it's not just colors, complementary colors green and red.
R. Just like in our life, the Kabbalists give you an example white, black, red, and green. That's it that from these four colors all In all, you begin to compose the Creator's relation to you according to your relation to the Creator.
S. It's really like this world, the optics?
R. I don't want you to start getting confused with optics. I want to know what they're saying and how to pass this into my emotions. They gave me some examples. It's an example, if I'm color-blind let's say, it doesn't mean that I lack spiritual vessels.
8. S. (24:04) You gave a very emotional description of how the Creator develops in us the senses towards the ten. That's the question, is he pressing all those feelings through connection and disconnection in the ten?
R. Yes, the most important thing for us is not to run away from negative and positive emotions but rather to develop them. The intention is that through that we will start to learn the alphabet. We begin to learn like musical notes in music that I begin to know each and every sound. How it is registered in me, how it is with respect to other sounds that are closer to it from below it and from above it ,towards it, etc. That is I am studying the form of the denotation like in music. Through that I can feel the Creator's melody and ultimately also to later on to create my melody towards the Creator.
S. This emotional sound, it's all through sensation with rejection between the friends and connection between the friends of attraction?
R. He's called the sound, and it includes both of these things. There's rejection that we had, that the Creator created the evil inclination and connection that we upon the rejection want to connect between us in order to reach an attitude which is from between us and to the Creator. This is already called a sound, otherwise we will just remain without hearing, what do you call that?
S. Deaf?
R. Deaf, that's right otherwise we will remain deaf. That we cannot hear what he wants to tell us and also we cannot tell him anything.
S. In the beginning we only feel a bit more and a bit less, but we can decipher the language itself?
R. But at least somehow you heard how children sometimes sing something? That there is no emotion in it and it's not the right sounds, but they try. They try.

Try to make all kinds of efforts in that and then in the connections between them that you build even though you don't want it, but you don't blur it, you don't cover it up, you don't erase the gaps between you because the correct sound expresses both the difference and the connection, the difference, and the connection. There are two things there. Then by connecting upon the distance, this is how you build these sounds until you reach the correct sounds. The correct sound reveals precisely how much there is a gap between one wavelength and another one. and how much these two waves have a connection between them in harmonics and all kinds of correct connections. We will learn that later. In Kabbalah there is a lot about it.
9. S. (29:42) Do we need to calibrate our feelings we begin to discover the Creator?
R. Correct, yes.
S. We have to calibrate your feelings towards bestowal, for this calibration we have to have a certain amount of attainment of bestowal?
R. No, there cannot be bestowal before the calibration. You have to learn what they say and try to reach it from lack of attainment, lack of hearing, lack of anything. Just like a child who is born comes out of the mother and doesn't know anything, doesn't understand, doesn't feel, doesn't taste, doesn't see. None of his senses are working besides the sense of touch. Then when it doesn't feel good he cries. S. You spoke about sounds, all about colors, if calibration between the friends gives birth to new colors?
R. Until we are able to distinguish between colors it takes time, just like in our world. A person who is born, is born blind. Meaning he cannot see, he has eyes, but he cannot see. As it says, they have eyes, but they do not see. Also we are even later when we grow up, we cannot see spiritual discernment, we cannot feel spiritual discernments, we don't hear them etc. This is how it is. By us trying to develop within us those senses, this is how we will advance. Until we will discover ourselves that we are already in the spiritual world. It all depends on how much you develop your connection with the friends, and you want to give this connection all kinds of discernments. All kinds of discernment with colors and the sounds and with each and everything. Otherwise you will remain as half-dead, not developed. There are people who are only in this world, they are not developed ,not developed. They have in them a great spiritual vessel called a soul, Neshama, however they do not develop it, that vessel. This Is how they remain, meaning they were born in order to develop that spiritual vessel to become human beings, but they prefer to stay on the degree of the beast.

10. R. (39:08) This means that in this way this is how we discover what is concealed in the world of Atzilut. We discover the world of Atzilut but not in it in itself but rather in all these worlds, Beria, Yetzira, and Assiya, that rise to the world of Atzilut that they cloth over it and this is how we discovered the gap between them and the world of Atzilut. This is how we discover the world of Atzilut. Actually everything is in it, it is entirely the light of Hochma, godliness, and it cannot be revealed in itself. But not only in such a way that the worlds of Beria, Yetzira, and Assiya, Bina, Tifferet, and Malchut, clothes over it and revealed the gap between them and the white, which is the world of Atzilut, and this is how we attain it from that also comes to us the attainment in our worlds. Let's say, or the Creator's attitude towards us, we do not belong to such discernments, but we can discern the relationships between these discernments in the lower degrees. How the three worlds of Beria, Yetzira, and Assiya reveal themselves compared to the world of Atzilut. Where Bina, Zeir Anpin and Malchut the way they are born and develop and exist through what they are receiving from the world of Atzilut from the wisdom Hochma so in them in the relationships between them and their relationship to the world of Atzilut we learn about the world of Atzilut. Although the world of Atzilut in and of itself we cannot learn about it, although we learned that there is shattering the system and the vessels that were shattered fall and we correct them, we raise them to the world of Atzilut. Through the gap between them and Atzilut, the gap as they ascend Atzilut we then discover the entire spiritual reality. That's how it works.

R. We write, we inscribe on the influence of the Creator which is entirely white because he's all bestowal. We write according to the measure of our ability to resemble Him. Either from Bina, Zeir Anpin, or Malchut using different colors.
13. S. (43:57) How to keep the gap in their relations in the ten and not to cancel this gap because that's where everything is revealed?
R. If we advance in the connection between us, to be as one man in one heart, we don't need to keep the gap between us, rather than the Creator will reveal in us each time a new desire to receive and we continuously again and again discover between each one of us and the others these gaps, these distances, repulsion, hate, until they want to kill one another and in this way you will always reveal the place of work. S. The Creator creates the gap?
R. The Creator makes the bad, he creates the bad and he lets you do the good.

It begins to attain what it means to be in a higher state, what's happening there. That's how he attains new colors, new sounds, and new feelings.

R. Yes, the Creator awakens us towards a connection between us, through the degree of the connection between us we climb will you ascend.

20. S. (59:13) How not to be confused and imagine mistakenly what the Creator wants to pass on to me, maybe speaking to me, maybe it is just my ego imagining that the Creator is speaking to me?
R. If I'm in contact with my friends and I wish to reach a state of being impressed by everyone then I have no problem. I will not make any mistakes. Specifically because we have ten or maybe five, however many we have in the group as much as we want to be like one, by that we will raise our vessel to a higher discernment. Try, although each one of you is an individual, independent, try to connect yourselves into one. Read what Rabash is writing about what the Zohar’s writing about the connection, the unity and you will begin to feel how much you have to do about it and how much you are, what you will feel, spiritual discernment by trying to be closer to one another.
21. S. (01:00:50) There is a system in the relations of the colors, black is the opposite of white, red is the opposite of a green, what conclusion can we deduce from that from the material that Baal HaSulam is telling us?
R. In our feelings we are capable of discernment between people, different qualities, different discernments in people and we can begin to connect above all those discernments, we do not erase those discernments but rather we detect, identify them, and connect above them. It becomes like a melody that we play, there are many notes and what are we doing by playing all the notes, we connect them, and they become a melody and the melodies like a language. It is like languages, words, sentences, and we feel what the Creator wants to give to us in this melody using these words. We begin to reveal his speech, the way he speaks to us.
22. S. (01:02:30) When do the three worlds of BYA get illumination of the world of Atzilut and clothe in the world of Atzilut, meaning they get light in the place where it shines?
R. We cannot feel the light of the world of Atzilut because it lacks discernments it is white light, when we climb from the worlds of Beria, Yetzira and Assiya to the world of Atzilut, we begin to feel also the worlds of BYA compared to the world of Atzilut, it itself shines through the worlds of BYA and then through this mutual way we learn about the world BYA against the background of the world of Atzilut and we learn about the Creator's attitude who is above the world of Atzilut and he's shining to us from there.
23. S. (01:03:38) It is written that they receive the light in a place where it illuminates, does it mean that the reception of the light can be only in the place where it shines, or can it be any other way?
R. How to receive a light in a place where it is not shining. That is why we do not actually have attainment until we rise to the world of Atzilut. Atzilut means Etzlo, close to Him, inside the light at his place, if we are in the worlds of BYA we cannot say exactly where we are. It is like a child that goes to kindergarten or to school, such things that he doesn't quite reach the world of the adult, he cannot measure, cannot understand what is happening to him and grown-ups. Therefore the world that exists in Atzilut is not enough for us, we need to see it against the backdrop of Atzilut, the backdrop of the white light. White light means the light of bestowal, of giving, love. and then against this backdrop we can feel our true state.
24. S. (01:05:20) What does it mean that the light disappears if it never changes, and it always surrounds us?
R. This is the light that we cannot feel and hear, we learn about the lights that are revealed to us according to our relationship between us and through the Creator as much as we are different to him, our difference to the Creator is felt as the appearance of a certain light. Although we are different together with that, we feel how much where and in what way and this gives us feelings. Meaning the light that is revealed within us is a light that also explains to us how distant we are from the Creator and opposite and also how similar we are, so from a thing and the opposite that is how we reveal and discover certain part of the reality. We cannot discover reality 100% similar or 100% opposite, rather to a certain extent of similarity and oppositeness in this way.
25. S. (01:06:51) Why does the Zohar use the example of the book?
R. That is how we reveal reality. It is like opening a book and discovering the upper reality in the book.
26. S. (01:07:09) About the answer that you gave before I did not understand that I will feel how the Creator touches me, I will feel the Creator's response to me.
R. I do not know, try to imagine how much the Creator is touching you right now, it is happening already, except that you cannot feel it. You cannot feel it. This is what we learned in the wisdom of Kabbalah. Why is it called the wisdom of Kabbalah, how to receive the attitude of the Creator towards me? Now I lack any senses, I cannot feel it. I need to develop in me such vessels that will help me to feel the Creator or the Creator's attitude towards me, that is the same.

R. The Creator awakens only the bad, meaning the will to receive, so that we will feel how opposite we are compared to him. Because in our difference from him we are capable of feeling him to the extent that we are different and at the same time wish to resemble him. The melody, our colors, they always tell us about the degree of difference and the degree of similarity.

Not by erasing the letters but rising above the letters to the white and then we do not erase the letters and do not erase the white but rather the gaps between them, how different they are. Through our work how they resemble one another in adhesion between the white around the letters and the black inside the letters or the green or red, accordingly we learn about the attitude of the white towards us. Meaning the Creator simply needed to build in us, create in us opposite discernments compared to Him, so from this opposition we will attain Him otherwise we would have no way of touching Him. The more we advance, the more we move towards connection with the Creator, the more we’ll discover that we have more and more attainment of the lack of connection between us and additional new forms of the Creator that you couldn't previously detect. We see this in this world, the more I learn a certain subject and if I tell someone about it, I tell him in two minutes, oh I got it, this is what you are doing. But a person who enters this subject begins to see many discernments, many forms and also many opportunities for connections. Meaning the more we advance the more gaps we reveal between us and the Creator and by that we reveal the opportunities to equate our form to Him and to understand Him more.
29. S. (01:14:51) It is as if the letters or the colors are hiding something, are concealing something, concealing the illumination of the whiteness of the book. Maybe you can elaborate some more and open some more on this because it is a sort of concealment, a sort of inversion of working with our emotions. Maybe you can add something more that because you were telling something very interesting just now?
R. Yes and they speak about that also. The Creator has to conceal Himself and specifically by His concealment He gives us an opportunity to reveal Him. Because in His concealment He makes Himself like the created being which is in complete concealment. There's more things in that many degrees until creation, until our nature. The more we dig within the will to receive to the extent that we reach the depth of creation between the will to receive and the will to bestow and this is how we discover that it is impossible to discover both the Creator and the Created being. Only the effort between them to the extent that they connect and stand one before the other.
S. If you work with a book in the things we are reading right now, it is as if we need to invert something, that here is not a direct way. Is that the correct way and how do you do this? How do you work with it because I have a feeling that we need to turn something around before opening something here?
R. You have friends, and you understand that everything you discover you discover in the connection between you and the connection between you and the friends and this is how each and every one out of the ten or five, it doesn't matter how big your group is, but tries to discover this connection with the friends. In this connection he starts discovering how much you are opposite, different from each other, so by that you start to discover the spiritual letters, qualities spiritual qualities. Then out of that you start to see how you reach the feeling of the spiritual world, a feeling of discernments, spiritual relations. R. We discover the gap between ourselves and out of the gap between us, when we want to connect we build all the relations, all the letters.
31. S. (01:19:49) If I am trying to connect to the next part that we learn, what colors are in the circles and what colors are in the line?
R. I do not know I'm not as wise as you are.
32. S. (01:20:09) A few months ago I asked you about this strain between the connection and the gap between words and what they represent. It's like all these things, all the phenomena in the world, the whole universe, it’s all taking on its context according to this idea of bestowal, so it is kind of like a canvas that everything is drawn on and that is how we grasp it?
R. Yes through that and through that you will develop revelation.
S. This gap that I have in my head and now I am writing it, and it is that gap and this gap, we want it, and we want to work with it. Is this right?

(01:28:32) We are but a result of something that acts upon us and if we want to reach a state that we discover some other things and so their actions to discover what is now concealed, to be revealed. There is no way to reach revelation of the Creator if we do not keep the conditions to reveal Him otherwise it is like we are now. In many opportunities to discover what is around us but it is not being revealed and that is because we are not preparing our senses for that.
36. S. (01:29:42) He writes in item ten that the four worlds of ABYA are felt, not like a book in this world that is not felt but in the mind of the person. In these three books in the worlds of ABYA, who are the authors and who/what is the story? Is the author The Creator or is the author my ten? The story is the reality I'm building, the reality He plans? It’s like you get a feeling here that a certain point of choice in building the world and I do not know if it's correct?
R. You are getting your choice to build your connection with the Creator by all kinds of forms that you're making of your will to receive. Don't run away to this world. You have a very simple thing with the Creator, you have desires, you have to make them resemble the Creator. From everything we learn that is how you should try to make them, as the Creator. Then you will not be mistaken.
S. That should be sufficient, I should not try to understand who or what is the story, who is the author?
R. To understand? Go ahead, try it.
S. Or to feel?
R. We'll part from you and then you will start searching for the author of the story.
37. S. (01:31:38) You said that the letters are in different letters are the deficiencies. Emotionally how do we come to experience this or work with this?
R. We should make our desires, make them have deficiencies. Desires are deficiencies so that I will miss the revelation of the Creator and that is something I can do, reveal the Creator only according to the law of equivalence of form. I should perform such actions with my friends so that these actions will somehow resemble my actions with the Creator, what I want to do with Him. I cannot directly reach Him; He is concealed so I do it in our relations with the relations between the friends. Try to build such relations between the friends that will somehow resemble actions that we should keep with the Creator, try to do that. Some can do it out in the open with everyone and that is good, that is a good example of showing peace in the world. Some do it in the public and it depends on your character in different states you go through. We need to maintain ourselves as much time as I can during the day as much good I can do for my ten.
38. S. (01:33:38) We really do want to prepare our vessels together for the revelation of the Creator. How can we help each other to prepare our vessels? Doing more than what we're doing right now, we did not want to be in limbo, what can we do to help each other?
R. I cannot tell you what more you can do. You have to look for a way and what else you can add and then you will add. Really I cannot say. Until you try to discover such connections between you that will be like a sphere. That you comprise it, you hold it all the time together and that is the right form of work between us.
S. Does it help to talk about emotionally how this whole ten Sefirot, how it affects us emotionally and what it does, even if we don’t feel it, like to talk about it emotionally what is going on with us?
R. Maybe a little bit, but do not think that you really feel it, you can be confused here, you can really be confused. I do not recommend to be in these imaginations but rather in what you are capable of now, to build connections between you. Connections of love and support, the main thing is connection and support. In us thinking about the purpose of the group, how we connect between us, how we help each other, how we are concerned about our whole group, how our world group grows and becomes stronger, that is what we should be concerned about and talk about it. Because in truth our whole advancement depends on that, it truly depends on that. We are so close to the application of this in practice, but we need a bit more effort. There is no slightly in spirituality. If we advance, if we go in, we are in. If not, you can stand 1 mm from the entrance to the spiritual feeling and still you are not in it. It is as if you are as far as 1000 km from there because what you are being shown there is the last thing, that you have to be precise about it for you to enter. They are so principled; they are so clear to you, and it seems to you that you are far away. That is why only with mutual support, mutual help and don't be tired. Many people come close and then suddenly they leave, and they regress. Because they do not feel that it is close. In order to bestow they cannot add forces, even without something in return you can do something because you're doing it for the Creator. But they can’t feel it, so they leave.
