Baal HaSulam. Foreword to The Book of Zohar. #18
1.Rav’s Introduction: Yes we are continuing in the forward to the book of Zohar. Baal HaSulam mostly in this forward, the book of Zohar, he has written four introductions so in this forward he wishes to give us a general picture how everything is divided into four phases in sounds and colors and then different approaches, whatever it maybe, it all stems from these four Sefirot, four main aspects or phases from the influence of the Creator who is the root phase down to the phase four which is the reaction from inside the created beings, and inside this forward he wishes to scrutinize the various modes of influence of bestowal from above, from the Creator on us down below, and how it’s unfolding in colors and sounds and all kinds of influences and we down below need to try and expand our vessels of reception and respond in kind in order to be ready to perceive the Creator in all of our senses in all of our perceptions.
Reading Forward to the Book of Zohar Item #18: (01:44) “As the four manners in the general …”
2. R. (02:12) Meaning the same laws the same rules apply in creation in general and also in each and every part of it individually.
3. R. (03:13) Meaning of we cannot engage with Keter because it is a root, there’s nothing of the created being there. Hochma is in bestowal is the influence of the Keter they also cannot quite deal with it because the created being is swallowed in such a way that there is a root for it but it did not come out into a quality of it’s own therefore Keter and Hochma wherever it maybe we cannot investigate and explore .
4. R. (04:04) Meaning Keter and Hochma no, but Bina, Tiferet, and Malchut you have five parts in general in the attitude of the Creator to the created being so the two that belong to the Creator when the created being is not yet revealed we cannot engage, and Bina, Tiferet, and Malchut which are a result of the influence of the Creator on the created being, there we can engage.
5. R. (05:15) We cannot rise to where a created being cannot investigate because those are the discernments that proceed us but only that which is inside our vessels and how we feel, we see, we hear those things in our vessels meaning all those discernments in our vessels, there we can explore it, feel it, exist in it, we explore it, write about it, we can talk about it, we can sing about it, so on so and so forth, and if you asked if this is enough to reveal the Creator what we have meaning Bina, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut, if we engage in them fully we can investigate and from the lower one we will review the Upper one and investigate and see that there is nothing in the vessels of the lower one unless they've received it from the Upper one. How can we know how we may aim ourselves, from ourselves from Bina and Zon to Keter and Hochma, we can completely reveal there the Creator. This is from your actions, the Creator is doing his actions in Bina and the Zon in every world, in every created being, so we can from your actions we shall know you. From his actions in us we can investigate him, understand him, recognise him, cleave to him, there is no problem, only to know how to do it. It’s our entire work is on those levels in these boundaries the Creator prepared for us, if we are not erupting in fantasy but rather work with that is needed in Bina, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut in each and every place, then we can attain the Creator, understand him, feel him, and cleave to him.
6. S. (07:49) What does it mean that we can feel Zon and Malchut in Bina?
R. We can arrange them in such a way that they resemble the Creator, these qualities, these desires, therefore if we are in adhesion we can receive everything that we deserve from Keter and Hochma into Bina, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut and there with our correct response if we annul ourselves, if we yearn to receive it in equivalence of form, so the entire system was created in such a way that we can get to know the Creator. From the Creator’s perspective there is no problem to receive, we will receive, but by that you remain on the level of the still, vegetative, and animate. If we wish to become a man, Adam, one who resembles the Creator, Dome, La Bo Reh, one who is similar to the Creator, than I need to rise from my degree to bestow to him in return but he is bestowing to me and this way I can come to understanding, awareness, adhesion in him, so let's do like him, become partners. Our work is not simply to be receiver's like the still, vegetitative, and animate degrees, but we have to come to bestow in return, since by this I am looking for how he is giving to me, how is he bestowing to me, how is he doing it? For by this I wish to perform such actions towards him. This is the meaning of being a Kabbalist, meaning receiving the influence of the Creator on to me, understand it, attain it, and I change myself by resembling him. This is all of our work in creation, therefore each and every person on the face of the planet regardless of how wise he is, smart, developed, he has to develop, if it is not in this lifetime than in the next, but he will have to develop to the point where he becomes similar to the Creator by feeling he is receiving from him in some way the Creators is bestowing to him and in return him try to bestow to the Creator.
7. S. (10:43) I would like to continue the previous question that practical activities in our ten you scrutinized giving, receiving, Bina, Zeir Anpin, Malchut. How do we practically attain these things?
R. We can do this only in the ten where in the ten we will form such relationships between us as if the Creator is bestowing to us, as if we can feel his influence, as if we wish to resemble him, and in this way we relate to the ten, very simply. Play, just like children play various games so we need to play in the game, how we relate to the ten the way the Creator is relating to us, as if, pretend. And so we will gradually come to know the entire system how to the extent that we play let's say by bestowing, play at bestowing to the ten and to that extent each and every one and even more according to the capabilities of each one in quality and quantity and style, each one according to how much he can bestow to others in the ten, in such a way we become similar to the Creator until we begin to see what we receive from the friends and what we give to the friends that there's a certain power here, a certain spirit here, understanding, a certain feeling that is above our deeds that there's a spirit of life in it and that's how we begin to reveal the Creator. It all depends on the effort we put into the connection between us for it to be more and more spiritual, and by doing it we’re doing actions of Bina and Zon what we cannot do with our own vessels but together with that we begin to feel in it also the influence of the Creator on us, how he gives, us he brings us his bestowal, his influence, and in this way we gradually rise to such a state, to bestow. Most important thing is to understand the entire realization is in the ten that's one thing, and number two that all of the efforts are in the connection between us, mostly connecting around the inner emotion, inner feeling of each friend towards the others, and from that we come to a state where we make room for the revelation of the Creator to us, that the way I relate to the ten in general I have to imagine that this is how I'm relating to the Creator and when my attitude toward the ten will become even one percent spiritual, meaning above my ego as much as I can ask the Creator to help me out, and as much as I try to relate to them without any connection to me in return but only to give, so it will be bestowal, even one percent, if they're will towards them so immediately in this bestowal I will feel the revelation of the Creator and that's how we work.That's what Baal HaSulam wants to explain to us.
8. S. (15:48) I have a general question. Through working with the beginners, with young people, we are speaking in a language that is not so clear to young people, is this something that should engage us, busy us?
R. Not now. Now we need to care about understanding what Baal HaSulam is telling us. Later how from ourselves, if we perceive differently all these things in us, in our hearts, then we will also know how to pass it forward, and not all-at-once both to learn for ourselves and then teach others, this will only bring us confusion and we will not understand anything and our students won't either so think how do you perceive it, how you relate correctly to the friends?

9. R. (17:50) There is nothing to add, it is clear that the Wisdom of Kabbalah speaks to, is aimed at man, the highest degree of the development of each and every level, but although it speaks of all levels, the still vegetative and animate and speaking but the intention is really on the speaking all the other degrees are but support for the fourth level, the level of the speaking, so it will develop until recognising godliness.
10. R. (18:54) The Creator created a desire to receive and the desire to receive develops from the still vegetative and animate and speaking, from the lowest degree, the lightest, the least developed all the way up to the speaking degree, the degree that resembles the Creator, Adam, Dome, La Bo Reh, from the word resembles, similar to the Creator, so we need to learn this how this development takes place in order to convince ourselves how we should develop until the degree of the Creator.
11. R. (19:56) Everything is divided into four, parts four, four degrees of development except for the degree of the root which is the degree of the Creator.
12.R. (20:18) This is the first degree of the development of the desire to receive.
13. R. (20:38) We see that also before us, inside of us.

He desires knowledge, meaning to know what's happening, how, and why, and how, and that attracts him, and not that he wants to simply acquire the knowledge and the intellect and the science in order to gain or succeed rather in order to in order to get to know that this is a certain concealed form in the desire to know Godliness.
16. R. (22:33) All those things are present, they are present in each and everyone except in different measures in each and everyone but in truth it’s possible to develop them in each and every person,

20. S. (24:50) In item 19 about three, he writes that the animate in the will to receive human lusts increases spirit. What does it mean?
R. Nevertheless he does not remain as he was when he was born, it induces his development. It is still not spiritual development. This human spirit meaning above how we exist and live as animals.

21. R. (25:36) Meaning the structure of the world is similar there is Shoresh, the root and then there is one, two, three, and four that emanate from the root phase and this is how it is in every world, in the general reality in each and every detail is divided this way.
22. R. (26:26) Meaning in all of the worlds we have the same structure, the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking, and godliness their root, in total there are five levels and the difference between them is in the essence of the matter either in the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking, that’s one thing. The other thing is their structure is the same, the essence is different, and there is a connection between each and every part, each and every detail in each and every world, in each and every part of creation. Just like there is a Rosh, a head, in the still vegetative animate, and speaking all the animals have head, and tail, and legs, and arms, and something, meaning the same parts exist in everyone, similarly in the spiritual world. Meaning it stems from the spiritual world. The Creator who created the desire to receive works on it with the Upper light and the Upper light develops in each and every part its desire to receive to its very end. The end is when he wants to reach a state when he can receive the Upper light in full, phase four, the last phase in the development of the will to receive and so it is in every state, in every degree, wherever it can be.
23. S. (28:10) Differences between the different worlds, they are within us, right?
R. It all is a relative to the person who is in attainment. What is happening outside of the person, does it happen or not? Is there a place for it or not, does it exist or not? We cannot say anything about it we can only say what is in our perception, this is what is going on, this is what we are attaining. The Kabbalists only wish to help us to develop our senses in order to attain what a person gets up and attains. If you ask can we relate to it in a way that it is independent and not through the still vegetative animate and speaking, not in general, but how it is in truth outside of us. We cannot say anything about it, never can we come out of the boundary of the created being who attains all of creation and the Creator. Only from within the created being and according to the law of equivalence of form, this is our limitation. Later when we develop because we come to attain various forms, then we can also describe to some extent what is happening, seemingly what is happening outside of our limitations. We will talk about it because I do not want to confuse you, for the time being I have someone on the line who wishes to confuse us.
24. S. (30:12) It says that in the end he restricts only his animate desires concerning the second discernment, but concerning three and four there is no restriction. Why is it on for phase two? In item 19, wanting more than the necessary sustenance and desiring luxuries but restricts only his animate desires?
R. That is his degree and he does not want more than that.
S. Why doesn't he do the same in three and four? What does it mean to restrict only the second phase?
R. He is restricted like that from birth according to his nature, it is not like he is restricting himself and he doesn't want more, but he is restricted because his will to receive is restricted and he does not want any more. Also in other people you see one goes to become an international renowned scientist, the other one it is enough for him just to be a janitor somewhere. The third wants to be a teacher in school and so on, each one has their own drive and the desire in finding their own level.
S. Yes but you're assuming that he wants exactly to achieve certain states that I want to be a janitor but here he says no, he wants to be a scientist but he is restricting himself?
R. This is incorrect, this is not right, look at yourself although you have opportunities to rise more and more but each time you stop yourself and say what for? With more knowledge comes more pain, I don’t want anymore suffering and pressure, I want to live my life comfortably and relaxed. We will learn about it and each one is learning about himself, and how each and everyone is actually making a calculation for himself, as much as I can add in my exertion combined to what I need to attain. Because we have to pay for everything as much as each is willing to pay. Some say I just want to lay on the couch and I’ll feel good and the rest can charge ahead. Others say no you must run ahead and what does that depend on? Only the desire to receive in the soul.
S. What you are describing is a calculation, not restriction. Restriction we learned about is when you really crave it even though you want it, you limit yourself. Here you are describing a calculation?
R. Restriction is a calculation.
S. Do I restrict for my own sake or for something spiritual?
R. For the time being for your own sake. Later we will learn how to do this for the sake of others.
25. S. (37:35) We started the lesson on item 18 and he is exposing everything, the matter, the form clothed in matter, essence in one item. The question is about unclothed form, he says that every Sefira in and of itself is considered an unclothed form and is not included in Bina and TMB?
R. We can say this about every single item that is divided into four degrees and each of them also divides into four degrees and so on indefinitely. What we can speak about is only how to attain these four degrees and then it will become clear to us what it is about because without attainment it is hard to talk about.
S. Is it saying about bestowal towards friends, I want to ask when is bestowal towards friends not an abstract form?
R. When you come to it, when you feel the friend's desire like your own desire at least to some extent, and then you will bestow upon it and it will feel to you like you are satisfying yourself and not him.
S. I still feel it is felt in me?
R. Of course it is in you, it is impossible that you feel anything else, the Creator too will be felt within you.
S. How will it not be felt as something abstract?
R. Because you feel it as your own. This is called ‘Make your Will like His Will’. Everything is felt within your heart, within your desire.
S. In me and not abstract?
R. Yes. It is written that He will not be a foreign God to You.
S. A most inner feeling but it is not felt abstract?
R. It is not abstract. It is hard for us to depict it, but it is a little bit like a mother feels her little child as her baby and she still feels like it’s in her.
S. More than herself, more than myself it is not abstract?
R. Even more than herself because it is not in her. If it was in her she would not feel it as when it is outside of her. It gives her the possibility to increase the connection with the child. Although it’s as if, what can it be? Once it exits her, the definition of the manifestation of the distance, allows her to increase to intensify the connection, to intensify the connection. We still do not know how to overcome it and how to do it, but the farther we become the more connected we become and more understanding and more feeling, when we restrict the bridging and by closing the distance.
26. S. (41:25) Is this division of the worlds into 4 parts, does it mean that we have to care about developing the screen and work in bestowal on each of the levels still, vegetative and animate and speaking?
R. It is not like that, we need to see only to develop the feeling in our hearts and the heart by itself and the heart will show us itself. The heart, meaning the inner sense, the will to receive, it will show us itself as divided into all kinds of levels, degrees, manners and we do not need to study what is written here because we will know it by heart. All the discernments that are in the first, second and third discernments. All we need is to try to feel the friends in the group as we feel ourselves more and more and more. Until they are truly in my heart, the friends are standing in my heart. It is not like there should be anything in an external expression of it, but each and every one should feel the friends this way. That his heart is divided among the friends and he leaves nothing for himself. There is no place in the heart for himself, only for the friends. If he disappears he has no heart and usually all the friends are in his heart and in this way he can see himself as getting closer to the Creator. Because in the overall relation to the friends, in the overall and in the totality of it he discovers The Creator as standing behind them. Then he feels the Creator presents himself in the connection with the friends. The friends, there are no friends. It is that manifestation of the Creator to the person. It helps the person to rise above his ego to in practise to do all kinds of activities that are anti his ego. He can rise above himself and connect to the friends and once he connects to them and feels that he is truly incorporated in them, is swallowed in them, then he begins to feel that in them there is the Creator. As it is written that the ‘Creator Stands Behind the Friends’. We have to depict to ourselves more and more this state and then you will see that this is how it is really built. That all these people do not exist, they are pieces of our hearts of our soul and the Creator who created it this way, is in order to allow us through this means to come to Him. The Creator is everything, the totality and the rest of the pieces of creation are the pieces of Him.
27. S. (45:37) To clarify the question about the fourth phase when it receives and it is nourished from a higher degree of spiritually, we do not get from the environment?
R. We receive in all the degrees from everyone, from everyone both together and each of us individually. Just as Baal HaSulam writes, as you approach it you will discover it and you will receive it.
28. S. (46:20) It says that in the third phase unlike the ones preceding it, the person receives and he is nourished from others of his kind. Are those not considered he is receiving from his species?
R. Yes, but it is still not completely related to his body. Here we are talking about degrees where the person rises above his ‘self’ into something. There is still something outside of him, let's say a family and although it is precious to him and close to him but he still distinguishes between himself and the family. Especially as the will to receive grows the gap between these degrees grows and then as we see it in our world, previously there wasn't so much of a difference, distance between people. Today people get divorced, they leave and so on. Everyone is divided within himself into many discernments.
29. S. (47:46) You said that I can feel in my heart all the friends the way I feel myself and when it happens I feel their suffering and their lacks?
R. I cannot say this. You do not feel their deficiencies toward the Creator, you feel how much you want to connect with them in order to get closer to the Creator, so we would all get closer to the Creator you want to push them to the Creator, this is what is what happens. In other words you do not really feel their suffering spiritual or corporal but rather how much and I am speaking about the first phases, but how much you want to bring them closer to the Creator. Think about that.
S. And when it happens, let's say you feel the heart of the friends, is it a common heart, a general heart?
R. Yes it is a common heart.
S. This common lack of the ten is it possible to feel it in the ten and the whole world? The deficiency of the world through the deficiency of the ten?
R. This is not for now.
30. S. (49:44) I would like to clarify further the question from the friend in Petak Tikva, what you said that man is the one who feels but we learn that we experience pleasure in the vessel of bestowal maybe nevertheless we feel it in the heart of the friends?
R. We feel everything within the heart of each and everyone to the extent the heart of each and everyone finds connection with the hearts of the friends, accordingly he feels the others but everything remains in a person's heart. We will come to it. We are talking about things that are for now we cannot detect, where is the feeling, where are the discernments, we still cannot detect it but it’s close so it is good that we are kind of guessing how it happens, it is good. I am very pleased with our poking, with our trying to feel where it happens in us. The important thing, again, as we said at the beginning of the lesson, it is to be worried about pushing friends toward the Creator, each one by not worrying about himself but pushing the whole group, his whole group to the Creator, from this he comes closer and advances and he will come to a state where he feels, through the friends he will feel the Creator, not otherwise
S. It turns out that this awakening reasons are what we will eventually the call the screen?
R. I don't like your questions when they are not according to what we are learning. Why be confused with these things when you oh it’s probably this it’s probably that, what for? You're already taking off from, veering off from our trail into other trails and there you will be confused in your perception which should be correct and on the main road we will spread into other things that we have no proof, that are written, nothing. By this I'm also teaching you while I'm with you how to read Baal HaSulam, read what is written. Don’t add to it all kinds of philosophies or all kinds “as if” of your own, it's not good. Let the additions come from above by understanding what is written. This is the safest. The book wasn't given to us so we would start philosophizing around these words, but so we would, what we have this is what we think about, and beginning to approximate and add to it this and that it's not good, it's not good, the Wisdom of Kabbalah is a system that is complete and closed complete system, so if we deviate from what is written we will not attain anything good. No where in the Wisdom of Kabbalah will you see such recommendations. It’'s not a regular science where you can follow his advice as much as you want and add to it more and more. Here it's not like that, here we should stick to what Kabbalists are writing as much as possible and if there's not more than there isn't more, no problem, it will be revealed to me if I need it. I constantly see here an approach that is as with the usual science maybe it’s like this, maybe it’s like that, it's not good, it's not worth it. Normally what we think doesn't happen because we're still thinking in the will to receive, in faith within reason, we’re still not in faith above reason in the desire to bestow.
31. S. (54:56) What does it mean to push the friends to the Creator, what am I pushing in them?
R. In my heart I want to stand behind everybody and help everyone approach the Creator. By what? By uniting more and more. There is no action of getting closer to the Creator unless by increasing connection between us.
S. And where do I feel if I managed to or not to push them?
R. As much as you can.
S. But can I understand that I'm doing it practically?
R. Yes, you constantly want it and you ask and you pray for them.

32. R. (57:49) As we are in this world we are nourished by the still vegetative and animate around us.

(01:00:21) The important thing is not to be confused meaning we have to go simply and what we receive we receive only according to it’s called “on eye level” and the addition will always come to us if we are speaking about spiritual addition. It will only come to us always from increasing the connection between us, the more quantitative and qualitative is the connection between us, accordingly we will advance in our spiritual attainment.
37. S. (01:01:10) What does it mean that the souls are the innermost part of the world?
R. The inner part, you have the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking, the inner part is the speaking level, it’s in the innermost and the rest of the parts of the world surround it. Meaning they work for its favor, to increase it and to awaken it, to develop. They are dependant on it and it is dependent on them in such a way that for its development it’s dependant them on how much as they pressure it and bring the Upper lights so it will develop, and the more it develops it connects to them and uses them with a screen and reflected light in order to bring them closer to it and use them like the Creator but the Creator operates on it through them when it is in the central point and it operates on them for the Creator. This is all the issue is of the reflected and directed light.
38.S. (01:02:35) What is the growing connection that you mentioned in the lesson? How do we do it when we are together and around the world?
R. Each and every day each and every one must think, how do I make my ten today be more solidified together than yesterday, this is a must, without it we do not advance. We do not get closer to the Creator and we do not require anything from the spirituality that is ahead of us, we're not moving into another Keter and another Keter and another Keter on our path to the purpose of creation.
S. This connection now that we are here is it more special or actually the work after the lesson, what is special about being here now?
R. Our work is both during the lesson and outside the lesson. When I come out of the lesson with all kinds of the impressions I have to determine to myself to what extent today I will work in the ten during the day it should not be with words or even actions but rather I am concerned about the ten that we will all be more and more connected together, that is it, more and more internally. They may not feel it, they may not hear anything about it, but I am working in this. I’m turning to the Creator, I want it to happen this way, my desire is what determines, this is very important, think about it during the day internally. You know it's like a mother who is in some work at the office but she is constantly worried about her baby which she left at home, likewise we have to be in all our engagements outside of the lesson we have to be concerned what is happening with my ten, how much I want them to get closer, I'm with them of course, I want them to come closer more and more until we discover the Upper force between us. The Upper force expects, is waiting for it.
39. S. (01:05:) If we push the friends towards the Creator this quality, this ability is something that is created in the ten, inside the ten, this quality?
R. Yes, where else can it be, where else can it be? Only in the ten.
40. S. (01:06:25) Do I need to divide my desires into four, these four categories of still, vegitative, animate and speaking?
R. We do not need to do it artificially. We will feel that this is how they divide and they connect and become established, built. My qualities, my desires become like that so I will feel degrees in them. for the time being I can’t do it, I still do not have a clear feeling, which is more, which is less, and why. There should already be a more complicated complex illumination for that.
41. S. (01:07:25) Why does Baal HaSulam call knowledge and wisdom as a spirituality? We learned that they belong to this world and they are found under the spiritual.
R. Yes, but compared to everything we have in this world it is still regarded as spiritual, still because in this world we also say that we have seemingly spiritual engagements, like culture, education, things like that. For now that is how it is
42. S. (01:07:58) Should every person go through a realization of all the stages of the development of the desire and only then come to of the desire to resemble the Creator?
R. Again

R. Not completely, but if we complete the first degree, which is the first degree in this world, if we complete in this world these degrees, still, vegetative, animate, and speaking in our desires to receive and turn it as much as we can into a desire to bestow then we come to the revelation of the Creator
43. S. (01:08:58) I can feel my heart clearly. How can I let in the heart of the friends to be in the place of my own heart, how to hold to this action?
R. Through an effort and a prayer.
44. S. (01:09:18) What does it mean to think how to bring the friends closer to the Creator?
R. Think, simply think, look for how, ask the Creator to advise you.
45. S (01:09:34) From which actions of the Creator in us can we get to know him?
R. Through our awakenings we can know the work of the Creator. What he does in order to awaken us, and in what ways, and in what discernments, and how much he operates more and more and it is all in order for us to awaken just a little bit, just a little bit. It is like a situation where we have God forbid a sick person and we walk around him and want to constantly wake him up and he barely responds if he does it all but very little. So this is how we should see ourselves, that we are truly not are responding. The Creator constantly presses us, and wants, and awakens us, and we constantly want to run away from it, fall asleep, etc.

R. Basically yes, all my friends who are, who I need to get closer to and connect with are basically or all my heart and I am with the Creator in the point in the heart, in the insides of the heart and I work in order to organize all the friends together and then the Creator is revealed at the center among them.
47. S. (01:11:44) What is the center point of the ten, how to feel that center where the Creator resides?
R. With our hearts. You can’t use geometry here or some other shapes it is just the center of our feeling, our common center of our feeling where we try to depicted that center as existing and eternal and there we expect the revelation of the Creator. If we really yearn for the Creator and we first of all have to build at center point between us because there he is revealed.
48. S. (01:12:34) How to use the feeling of being distant to increase the connection?
R. Feeling, we should constantly try to, how should I put it oh, we should constantly try to see ourselves as closer and check if we are or not, meaning if we are further or closer and then further and in this way through these inlets ins and outs we will grasp the feeling to what extent we have this disposition to be connected in one point, there is where the Creator is. Just imagine if you connect together at that point in one heart then there you already reveal the Creator
