Part 3: Lesson on the topic of "Rosh Hashanah", Part 2

Reader: Friends, we're going to keep going. We are in the excerpts about Rosh Hashanah, the headline is Rosh Hashanah, quote Number Eight, from Letter 34, Rabash writes.

Reading: (00:11) Rosh Hashanah No. 8. RABASH, Letter No. 34 Twice

The meaning of Rosh Hashanah [New Year’s Eve] is a new beginning, when a person begins to build a new structure. It is as our sages said, “One should always consider oneself half sinful, half righteous. If he performs a single Mitzva [good deed/commandment], happy is he, for he has sentenced himself and the whole world to the side of merit. If he commits one transgression, woe unto him for he has sentenced himself and the whole world to the side of fault.”

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (02:25) We talked a lot in the last few weeks about a spiritual breakthrough. And as he writes here that we have to build a new beginning, a new year, just as we're preparing for a war, there's a whole strategy. I want to ask about our attitude towards a spiritual breakthrough. Are the stages clear to a process of an attack and a breakthrough? Or is it a process of we're going to keep studying, we're not planning anything for the Creator and when it comes, it comes, the outburst comes from above. Or do we really have to plan stages because we have different friends. We have a huge Kli, beginners, veterans, men, women. So, how can we even build, like, a strategy?

M. Laitman: We read sources, meaning Rabash and Baal HaSulam – especially Baal HaSulam – and what touches on Rosh Hashanah and this entire period. And truly, I really have nothing to add other than what is in our sources, so please ask?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (04:45) Could there be a change, if there is no emotional, heartful change to begin with?

M. Laitman: We can receive during the period of this holiday, all kinds of changes in our sensations, in our relations between us, which come from this period.

Student: My question is could there be that spiritual outburst we're talking about, with my current attitude towards the friends? Or should my attitude, my relation, change internally, in an essential way, so there will be an essential change?

M. Laitman: We need, in any case to understand, according to that sentence that whoever did not labor on the eve of Shabbat, what will he eat on Shabbat? It's the same thing in relation to all the holidays and all the calendar dates. We need to be close to that topic of what we expect to change in us and how we should respond to these little, and big, and opposite, changes.

Student: So, let's say the light comes, what should I put before it in order to affect it, what, my heart? That it will be exposed to this force that's here in the holidays, in order to take advantage of that it will move something inside me. So, what do I want to change the most, inside?

M. Laitman: Already before Rosh Hashanah, we are in scrutinize and we need to increasingly add forces in the connection between us, and in prayer in order for those scrutinize to be clearer to us. And so that we will go through them together with the Creator. That this entire period of entrance into Rosh Hashanah will be I am for My Beloved, and My beloved is Mine. That we work in equivalence and connection with the Creator. That is our tendency.

Student: Shouldn't we have like a concrete demand to change my relation towards the friends, open my heart, something concrete?

M. Laitman: If you come to that, that you feel that that's what you truly lack, that there is nothing else more important to you in this period of Rosh Hashanah. That you will see your friends as parts of your soul; then you will certainly change your request to the Creator and you will ask that from Him. However, most of the nation does not understand what's happening with it. It does not have the awareness of the request to the Creator during these holidays. So, we need to pay attention and to sharpen our alertness toward the Creator.

Student: The Creator is actually revealed in the lowest part in me – the part I neglect the most – my connection with the friends, that's where I discover it.

M. Laitman: Yes, please.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (09:39) Continuing the friends, we were contemplating if we should have a gathering of friends that we do every week. Because we're gathering a lot and there's meals and the friends showed a new degree of attitude towards the gathering. Because there's nowhere to get the greatness of the Creator but only from the connection between us. And like you said, that we're in a special time now, so, if we could give us an emphasis, what time are we in now on this holiday? What opportunities do we have in front of us, now?

M. Laitman: The new time that we're undergoing at Rosh Hashanah is a new beginning, a new start. That we are in this determination of tilting the world to a scale of merit. And therefore, we and the whole world will acquire this new degree, and from there we will increasingly understand the Creator and His plan toward us.

Student: This determination, it comes from the connection of the friends, from the Ten?

M. Laitman: It reveals through that the determination exists already inside the connection of hearts.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (11:46) About the article, the knowledge of the Torah is opposite than the knowledge of the landlords. It was speaking about possessions, does he mean spiritual possessions?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: I asked you once that the actions I'm doing here, I feel that they're filling my ego and that I'm choking from them. When I relate to my spiritual possessions, that's what's going to prevent it?

M. Laitman: I didn't understand the question?

Student: I once asked you a question that also the actions I do here in society feel corporeal to me. If I develop the reason of the Torah, that's going to prevent it, that my actions in the group won't be egoistic in my feeling?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Is attainment only through working in the Ten, is that in order for me not to have any thoughts that even my attainment, that I'm the landlord over that?

M. Laitman: You can put it that way.

Student: We were speaking about the exaltedness of the goal, as opposed to the exaltedness of the means. The means and the goal, it's not one?

M. Laitman: No.

Student: Only in Gmar Tikkun it becomes one?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Until then, we need to lift the goal because that's the constant thing and the means are what change?

M. Laitman: That's also correct.

Student: That's what's going to, we're lifting our goal, that's constant, we can count on it that it doesn't change. And all the means that we were given, they also change and also our attitude towards them changes? That's why we need to lift our goal?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (14:22) What else can we add except for one thing, demanding for all the friends that they'll reach the feeling that it's Me for my Beloved and my Beloved for Me but what else beyond that?

M. Laitman: Nothing, that includes everything, yes! The attitude to the Creator covers all the deficiencies. More?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (15:07) We're speaking about a new beginning,

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: We can understand it in all kinds of forms: One, is that we have to see a new beginning every moment, every morning lesson, every Ten gathering, that's one thing. Now, we don't know what the results of our actions are, a person knows he can do the maximum for his Ten, maximum for society. He knows how to measure for himself what his maximum is or if he just gave up on something. But we don't see results. It's concealed, you don't know if you did a determination and because of that a friend did something, or it's not something we can see. The question is what is that new year, what actually changes the Kli, or is it something else?

M. Laitman: You're asking me in terms of a scientist?

Student: As a system, yes, also a system and also it's emotional because it's between us and the Ten, it's between us. Where's that inversion point, the change, that it's a new beginning and not like choosing again?

M. Laitman: No, that in which we are in a framework of time which we cannot shorten. So together with us we have been given the ability to perform actions through which we can speed up those times as it is written that Israel hastened the times. But other than that, we have no way of entering creation, the forces of creation, in order to change them.

Student: What's a new year, what's really a new beginning if in every moment we're actually making an effort to renew every moment?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Renewing the greatness of the Creator, all of us, the Ten, all the vessels, all the means we have. So, what is a new beginning if it's every moment, it's clear. But what's a new year, what's new here?

M. Laitman: What's new is the attitude of one to everyone and everyone to each and every one, that we need to reach a decision whereby our future is completely built on the connection between us, that is all. Then we can start coming closer to each other, constructing that next state. If not now, then when?

Student: So, what you're saying and what I hear should be in every moment, I have to choose it.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, what is the first of Tishrei, the first of the day of the year, that it's time for a new year?

M. Laitman: Because we, during these holidays, receive forces and new conditions to determine the connection between us as the Creator planned it in the beginning of creation. He began the creation and we want to complete it.

Student: There's something in the calendar of the earth that in certain conditions in the plan of creation, that specifically in this time, we are given better means for determination?

M. Laitman: Yes, exactly.

Student: Should we be afraid of missing out on something here?

M. Laitman: I think that each and every one thinks about that.

Student: That?

M. Laitman: He does not want to miss out that opportunity, that one-time opportunity, that he has been given before Rosh Hashanah.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (20:38) You said that we are at the point of determination to determine the world to the scale of merit. What does that mean?

M. Laitman: It means that we can manipulate it in a good direction, to a good goal.

Student: To manipulate it, to turn it around?

M. Laitman: That its development will be toward connections and understandings that we participate in.

Student: What depends on us attaining that goal in the new year?

M. Laitman: Depends on us, on our connection.

Student: That we will wish to receive upon ourselves that same law of creation; and Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of all the laws and means that we can activate? And accordingly, we can progress?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (22:17) Foreign thoughts, is that when I see that I have a time for change between all kinds of thoughts and I need to do something with it? Because it is very different from what I actually want to be. So, I understand that there is a place for prayer, what is the prayer I need to raise here?

M. Laitman: To be immersed in thoughts, and plans, and discernments.

Student: What is more accurate to ask for? What do I lack?

M. Laitman: The best is to ask for connection.

Student: Connection with the Creator?

M. Laitman: Connection with the created beings through which I will discover our common force, which is the Creator. The Creator created us and formulated us as the soul of Adam HaRishon. And if we determine accordingly, so then He agrees with that and we succeed.

Student: He agrees with what?

M. Laitman: With that in which we connect, and in our connection, we will discover our line of development and we will reach Him, together.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (24:49) For quite a long period of time, I see that I'm capable of only incorporating with the friends. But adhesion, no, I have no such connection with anyone; is that something that I need to want to change?

M. Laitman: We need to reach adhesion with each and every one.

Student: Do we need to ask for that?

M. Laitman: We need to ask for that, we need to pray, we need to discuss that, to read.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (25:53) How does a person divide himself into the righteous and the wicked? How does a person divide himself into, divide himself into two halves?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: The sinner and the righteous, it's written that a person has to see himself half righteous, half wicked. How does he divide himself?

M. Laitman: It's not the person that divides himself in a way, the upper light acts on him in a certain way. And he feels the result of the act of the upper light on him, that he is half sinner and half righteous.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (26:58) Usually, we either feel one state or the other. We can't in parallel feel two states – either righteous or wicked – how to feel it in parallel?

M. Laitman: You cannot feel them together at the same time because the things are opposed.

Student: What does it mean to divide myself into two?

M. Laitman: That is if a person is capable, so then he already examines, or sorts his evil inclination from his good inclination. And accordingly, he determines where each inclination is found and how he can implement them.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (28:17) I wanted to ask about this breakthrough, I think, it's a good time, it's a new year, you were talking about that a lot. So, we plan a breakthrough, we plan an attack, at least in our world, where there's time and motion in place; so, we have to take, let's say, a few months, make preparations. I wanted to ask, if you recognize stages that we can go through, how to start? Well, we end with connection, that's clear, but what are the stages that come before it? I'll give you an example: One, is not to harm the others, that's also a stage because maybe I'm harming, maybe not on purpose, then maybe to bestow, to come closer, to incorporate, all kinds of stages that we can maybe learn as a preparation? Or just connection is the word, and that's it. Or maybe there is a place for such discernments, too.

M. Laitman: We'll discuss that on the way, there is room for that.

Student: () You said that my next gathering, probably after this breakthrough, is the contact with the upper force. So, can you depict a state that maybe will build stages of preparation? What is that contact because once you explained what it means to taste, or see, or hear the Creator, different stages of connection. But a contact, you never talked about that, what is that feeling?

M. Laitman: Kabbalists talk about that, that we need to reach a contact with the Creator.

Student: Is that stage like less than tasting, or seeing, or hearing?

M. Laitman: It is as if a prior state from which we begin connecting more and more in depth to each other.

Student: Can you explain what contact is?

M. Laitman: Contact is, according to the word, we understand it as an external connection, the first external connection until we reach adhesion.

Student: Adhesion is the final state and contact is the first state. So how to depict the contact to the friends?

M. Laitman: The extent to which I am in connection with them, with a desire to help them, with a desire to be in connection with them. And then from connection with them, to want to receive what I attain. That is called, a result of connection.

Student: Can we say that the first stage of connection is not to harm them?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes.

Reader: Number Nine, Rabash writes in the article of Rosh Hashanah

Reading: (32:15) RABASH, Article No. 882, “Rosh Hashanah” Twice

Rosh Hashanah [beginning of the year] means the beginning of the creation of man. It is as our sages said that a drop is declared whether it will be wise or a fool, etc. (Nidah 16b). “Rains” means one’s corporeal forces, whether he will have a big or a small brain, a small or a big heart, a small or a big desire, and so on.

If a person walks on the good path, when he grows, it is impossible to add, meaning to make for him a bigger brain and desire, since they were already allotted to him when he was made. However, he uses all of his brain and energy only in a place of Kedusha [holiness] and need. This is enough for him to achieve a degree where he can be rewarded with the revelation of the light of the Creator, to truly adhere to Him, and receive his proper share in the next world.

M. Laitman: Again.

Reader: “ … Rosh Hashanah means the beginning of creation …”

M. Laitman: Questions?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (35:20) I want to ask, when can you say that a person that was created becomes a man, Adam, similar to the upper one?

M. Laitman: That's when he becomes similar to the upper one, yes.

Student: But there's a process?

M. Laitman: Yes, there's a process.

Student: What's the point that you can say, here he became, here he's resembling the upper one? What state is that?

M. Laitman: Let's say, at the time he was born, at the time that the will to receive, the person who wishes to be similar to the Creator – for that purpose – he makes himself go through all the means that the Creator organized for him. So, through them the person comes closer and closer to the whole of creation.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (37:24) Continuing the friend, should we accept some internal change for this holiday?

M. Laitman: Certainly, if I want the will to bestow to manage me, the will to give, to connect. So certainly, I become something else and the person needs to identify what changes in him at each and every moment in his attitude toward others.

Student: In our work in the Tens, we get a lot of greatness, first of all: Gratitude, praise, that's our field and we don't go out of it. How do we break this daily routine? That every day we're giving greatness. Every day we hear, we listen, we speak of renewing. How to renew this every day, to raise it to one degree upward.

M. Laitman: I think that here is truly our problem, that we cannot commit to bringing the person to be ready, in order to adapt himself to the Creator.

Student: How can we obligate the Creator in our work?

M. Laitman: Through that in which we try to, make your desire as His desire, so that He will make His desire as your desire”.

Student: We eventually, what we're talking about is prayer: Prayer should come from a common deficiency. We were talking about in the past, we're always talking about prayer, that we need prayer. But in practice, there's a difficulty in the talking between us, to raise this prayer.

M. Laitman: I don't see it, I understand that the person needs to go through all kinds of stages of recognition of evil. That he sees at the end of it all that he has nothing, no reality, no inner reality, that can develop and reach the degree of the Creator. However, that, all in all, is what causes the person to have the ability to connect and bring himself toward the Creator in that he falls, he puts up his arms, and he expects salvation.

Student: When Rabash wrote in Letter Eight, that even when there's a distance, it won't separate between us. So, what is that distance that is between us that we actually want to be beyond time and place to close that distance?

M. Laitman: I don't know, I had to give you that picture but I can say that the Parsa is like a measurement of oppositeness that there is between two worlds. That a person needs to identify. I don't know, I lack the words, a lack of words.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (43:11) Question about the desire: What I understood from this excerpt, a person is given a desire, but he can't change it, is that right?

M. Laitman: He can't.

Student: So, with the desire that was given, that's how he keeps going. The question is we read that in Rosh Hashanah, a person determines whether he wants to write himself down in the book of the righteous or the book of the wicked. Meaning he determines it, he's the one who writes it, he's the one who implements it. So that desire, too, a person does control it, is there a way to increase the desire?

M. Laitman: To increase and to lessen the desire, we can do that. That is the entire method of our work with the upper force, with the upper light, with the Creator.

Student: Can you please, can we read this again and you can explain it, a bit, because, there, he's speaking about the rain and maybe we can read it.

Reader: Yes, we can also read Number Eleven, there he's speaking exactly about that.

M. Laitman: Please, so Eleven.

Reading: (44:48)  RABASH, Letter No. 49

Man is the judge and must sentence and determine who is right. That is, the evil inclination claims, “It is all mine,” that the whole body belongs to it and man should be concerned with and work only in favor of the evil inclination. Likewise, the good inclination argues, “It is all mine,” that the whole body belongs to it and man should be concerned with and work only for the sake of the good inclination.

When a person wishes to carry out the sentence and choose the good, the question is, “Why does he need to choose the good and say that the good inclination is correct?” It cannot be said that it is in order to receive reward in the next world, since it was said, “Be not as slaves who are serving the Rav in order to receive reward.” Rather, one should choose the good because of the greatness of the Creator. […]

It follows that when a person sentences, he must engage in the greatness of the Creator. Thus, the Creator is elevated by the judgment. Then, once a person has chosen the good—not for a reward—the Creator can give him all His gifts and there will not be any shame. At that time, the Creator instills His holiness, meaning lets him feel the holiness.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (47:16) Why do we celebrate Rosh Hashanah once a year? Why don’t we do it a few times a year?

M. Laitman: It's according to the spiritual root.

Student: But I feel that if I heard from a friend in my Ten something good, so I feel that it's Rosh Hashanah, it can be on a Wednesday.

M. Laitman: Yes, that's how they determined that from all the spiritual roots, that root of Rosh Hashanah begins to be at the first of a certain month; that is called, Rosh Hashanah.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (48:23) I heard that a person has to see the friend as his own soul. What does that mean, to see the friend as my soul?

M. Laitman: We come to a state of being connected together, as one man with one heart; where we have no strength for connecting us in all kinds of different ways other than what the Creator did, that is all. Therefore, we are in a state of pleasant and good development, where we gradually reach a state that is called and determined between us as a new beginning, that is all.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (49:52) It is written that once a person is born, they say about the drop, what will come out of it, smart or stupid. But every Rosh Hashanah is determined what will happen in the next year, where the rains will come from, and so on; but we also say that Rosh Hashanah is like a new birth. So, is there anything beyond whether you have blessing or not blessing, can there be an essential change? Maybe a bit wiser than usual, maybe. It is like when people come here, they say that they feel like they've been born, feel differently. So, what's actually happening in Rosh Hashanah and what should we do to really get that blessing, to be worthy to work the Creator?

M. Laitman: Those are completely different questions, to be worthy of Rosh Hashanah means being worthy of a new spiritual period, which is entirely something that will pass over us, that is all. That we need to try to identify, feel, and receive.

Student: Does it depend on what we did from Rosh Hashanah until the next one? Or the days of forgiveness, I understand that the whole year you have to work, so the next Rosh Hashanah that's coming will be determined what's going to happen with you.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (52:25) I was thinking in this part of discernments in the Ten. That I can recognize, here, that if in the past we used to have a scrutiny in the Ten And I used to recognize resistance towards friends' opinions, and now, today, I feel that I don't want to give, I don't want to respond the way I used to respond. I don't want to let it take over, I want to respond the way the Creator would have wanted me to respond. How to see that the choice won't be from a reward?

M. Laitman: That determines on your whole attitude. You want to change via your decision, right, in order to be adhered to the Creator, to relate yourself to Him. So, what do you lack?

Student: To constantly remember that I want to.

M. Laitman: If it's a true desire, so you cannot detach from it.

Student: How is that not from a reward? Where do I recognize that I want to respond to the qualities of the Creator? Not through my will to receive, not through my short temper. But the way the Creator wants me to respond, how do I recognize I don't want it from reward?

M. Laitman: That is the scrutiny, you pay attention to yourself, what you receive, what desires and intentions. Connections with the friends, and more and more, until it will become clear to you that your connection with them is, all in all, only in faith above reason. Which means that you want to be connected to them in a certain ideology, a high, general ideology. Where you have no calculation other than the world, depending on your attainments.

Student: That's spiritual reward.

M. Laitman: Yes, certainly.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (56:12) To continue the friend about the reward, maybe it's a question of beginners, but still. We understand we want to reach bestowal and serve the Rav, not in order to receive a reward. Still, the Kabbalists tell us that when we reach spirituality, we'll be able to cut off our hands and legs seven times a day just to taste that. It's always in your head that calculation that I'll get some huge reward, that it's profitable for the world to receive. What's the way, what is the point that we can really want to serve the Creator that He's so great that I want to serve Him and I'm not even thinking at all of this pleasure?

M. Laitman: I don't know, we are only talking about things that we can identify as being those things that we can use. And here, you are telling me things that are in hiding, which we do not feel today. So let us hope that soon we'll be able to reach a state where these things will invert in us.

Student: Shall we try and ignore this knowledge that there's huge pleasure in bestowal and try to just erase this knowledge?

M. Laitman: Are you capable of doing that?

Student: No, that's why I'm asking what the work is??

M. Laitman: We need to believe that all the pleasures are truly in the force of bestowal, that is all.

Reader: (58:31) We need to finish.

M. Laitman: We need to finish? All in all, it's eight in the morning?

Reader: Well, there's going to be a prayer, here, then there's a meal.

M. Laitman: Those are things that we cannot move.

Reader: How do you summarize this lesson?

M. Laitman: Precisely at Rosh Hashanah and other adjacent holidays, we have what to think about in terms of how to connect to them. Well, let us hope that we will succeed.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (01:00:02)Thank you for all the effort that the Creator lets you do. You're bringing us these special moments of this lesson, and I'm asking how do we take these sacred moments of the lesson and disseminate it to all of Bnei Baruch and the whole world?

M. Laitman: Very simply, to distribute that to all the members of the nation, as much as possible, and to ask each one who wishes to attain that in practice, that in practice they need to attain their intensity of connection with the Ten. And then, to connect all those Tens together. That is all before us, it's not hard.

Student: As long as we stay together.

Reader: Announcements. and a Nigun.

Song: (01:02:03)
