Part 3: To be as an ox to the burden and as a donkey to the load – Selected excerpts from the sources #7

Reader: Hello friends. The subject of our lesson today is “To be as an ox to the burden and as a donkey to the load.” We have excerpts from the writings of the Kabbalists on the subject. We will read Excerpt Number Seven. Rabash writes in his article, “A Near Way and a Far Way.”

Reading: (00:23) 7. RABASH, Article No. 26 (1986), "A Near Way and a Far Way"

Since man must assume the burden of the kingdom of heaven and must be as an “ox to the burden and as a donkey to the load,” and man cannot carry it, meaning that it is hard for him to bear the load, which is the meaning of, “cannot carry it,” for this reason the road will be far for you.

This is not so if one did take upon oneself the burden of the kingdom of heaven. He would see that everything is near him. That is, a person sees that “the place where the Lord your God chooses to set His name,” meaning the place where God has chosen to set His name, is far from him. This is as it is written, “And let them make Me a Temple and I will dwell within them.” That place is far from the person, meaning from being able to make in his heart room for instilling the Shechina [Divinity]. He is far from understanding such a thing—that one will have the strength to make room for instilling the Shechina in his heart. This is so because he will not be able to carry it, meaning he will not want to take upon himself the accepted way, “as an ox to the burden and as a donkey to the load.”

M. Laitman: This is what a person feels as a first result of his labor. That he has to put so much effort and prayer to be as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load. So, the path he has to go through, it opens up before him and then he reveals how much he lacks strength. And that's what's written, that this place where he aims himself to is far from him. And if he wants to advance, he has to take upon himself this condition in advancing on the path as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (04:34) Where is that stage of, as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load? Where is that in the process?

M. Laitman: If a person understands what it means to advance on his way towards the Creator, then that's what he feels that comes up on him, this condition: As an ox to the burden. That you don't answer the ox you rather put you load it on him, and a donkey to the load, meaning doesn't take any relief from the work and still doesn't understand also why this comes to him.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (06:20) What does it mean that a person assumes the burden of the kingdom of heaven? What does it mean and what are the conditions for that?

M. Laitman: That whatever comes to him on the way, on the way to the Creator, it's pre-planned that way and it comes to him from above. And he has to accept it and keep going.

Student: Yes, but what is that concept: The burden of the kingdom of heaven? What does it mean?

M. Laitman: The burden of the kingdom of heaven means that there is a King, that is the Creator, that man has to accept, as a burden and as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load, that's also what we've learned, and continue.

Student: Yes, so he writes here that, if a person assumes the burden of the kingdom of heaven, then he sees that everything is near to him. Meaning he has to agree to assume that burden, he has to agree, what is that agreement? From where does it come that he agrees to assume the burden of the kingdom of heaven? What does it depend on, if I accept it or not?

M. Laitman: It depends on man, because if he understands what is the burden, and he wishes to understand what is the kingdom of heaven, so he feels himself like an ox that accepts the kingdom of heaven.

Student: And this, can this happen in the Ten, assuming the burden of the kingdom of heaven in the Ten?

M. Laitman: The entire Ten, no; but in every Ten, there are those who are closer, those who are farther.

Student: And what is the condition of having to annul oneself before the friends, is that a condition for reaching that?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Annulment before the friends?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (08:57) This concept has an external expression, yes, a person must be persistent, coming to the lessons with the Ten, with the environment, but what is the inner expression of accepting, assuming the burden of the kingdom of heaven?

M. Laitman: He wants to hear inside of him, the ox that agrees to take on the burden of the kingdom of heaven, and raise it to the Creator.

Student: But the ox does not agree.

M. Laitman: Well that's work. If a person adds from his own force to the force of the ox, then it happens.

Student: How can a person add his power to the force of the ox?

M. Laitman: By agreeing. When he asks, he asks to have the force to fulfill the work of the ox.

Student: So, the person himself asks to be like an ox.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (10:31) When I look around me, I see many people assuming that work, that they have a lot of power. From where do they take that power? From where? Because I feel that it's difficult, I don't have the kind of power that I see in those other people who do the work, who take upon their shoulders all this.

M. Laitman: Get closer among them and they will also influence you from the little force that they each have, and thus you'll advance.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (11:21) The process of the work in Lo Lishma, does it begin only when a person assumes the work, the burden of the ox and the load of the donkey?

M. Laitman: A person has to accept this condition, and then he sees where he is.

Student: But it's difficult to accept that condition, it takes time for a person to accept that condition. He falls many times, many ascents, many descents, until he reaches a state where he accepts that state of, as an ox to the load and a donkey to the burden. The question is, is that where the work in Lo Lishma begins?

M. Laitman: Well, I tell you, that's what you have. We have to accept that as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load, meaning without mixing with it all kinds of questions of our own. Just to rather accept it and continue.

Student: What does this work include, the work of the ox to the burden and the donkey to the load? What happens there?

M. Laitman: That we'll have to scrutinize.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (12:45) What is exactly the burden, what is the load? What feels heavy?

M. Laitman: That he doesn't know why and what for, but the desire of the Host is pressing him. And he accepts this as something that must be.

Student: And the desire of the Host, why is that a burden for him?

M. Laitman: Because it's against his desire.

Student: So, how do you turn that load, that heavy burden, into something light? Does it need to invert in a way or do you need to feel that burden throughout the entire path?

M. Laitman: Probably throughout the path.

Student: So, what is the right way to relate to the burden?

M. Laitman: That you have to accept it, as an ox to the burden.

Student: Now, what does it mean that a person accepts it as a burden? The Creator places it on him as a burden?

M. Laitman: It's that the Creator prepares for those people who wish to get closer to Him, to understand Him, to feel Him.

Student: And the person should accept it as a burden?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What does it mean that the person accepts it?

M. Laitman: That a person will feel that there is a force from above on him that's governing him, and not asking him, but forcing him.

Student: When I feel that it's heavy, what should I do? When the burden is heavy, what does the person do?

M. Laitman: Usually a person can pray, and then accordingly, he can feel how much this pressure from the spiritual work lessens.

Student: So, the prayer does what, remove some of my burden?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (15:31) There's this concept where the Creator says, you didn't carry my briefcase, my luggage. So, maybe if you feel a burden, then the work isn't right.

M. Laitman: Why?

Student: Because if you take the luggage of the Rav, then it's done with joy and with great upliftment; so, I suppose you need the presence of the Creator there.

M. Laitman: It doesn't seem to me that the Malchut of the Creator is missing here, this additional heaviness besides what a person feels. But he just needs to imagine to himself that what he has comes from the Creator. And he can only make it easier for himself if he accepts it this way, specifically.

Student: And when the load falls from his shoulders, then we see and we say that I need the help, that that's why they come to help him. Because he takes up more than he can lift, and then there's an opportunity to help.

M. Laitman: Yes, if a person does all that is put upon himself – all that is loaded on him – then, yes, eventually he needs to see that only by receiving this load he advances.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (17:49) He writes in relation to the burden that a person, that it's hard for a person to carry it. But if the person is able to accept upon himself the burden of the kingdom of heaven, then he'll be able to carry it. So, what are the conditions in order to do this transition?

M. Laitman: His attitude, his relation to the burden, whereas he perceives this heaviness that he feels as much as it is difficult for him. He feels he doesn't have the strength. He must be much stronger, much wiser, he must be willing to concede more to the friends, and more.

Student: Is it a change from black to white, or it's an essential change, which is more?

M. Laitman: It can be gradual each time.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (19:12) Maybe you could help us if we relate to this burden that the Creator places upon us, like weight that we put on this white page, so that it won't fly away.

M. Laitman: Not on a paper, but on each and every one.

Student: That it'll help us keep our form and spirituality.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (19:47) The reception of the, or accepting the burden of kingdom, that's the privilege that we are here. And my question is that the ox is Gevurah, it's heroism?

M. Laitman: I don't understand that.

Student: The burden of the kingdom of heaven, there's this payment for this privilege. It's a privilege to enter that.

M. Laitman: Probably, it could be.

Student: And the ox is connected to Gevurah, the acceptance of this burden.

M. Laitman: I am not going to go and solve your questions. We didn't read about them, anything.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (20:40) A person needs to reach the burden of the kingdom of heaven after he is as a donkey to the load and ox to the burden. And we also learned that a person needs to be happy with his part. Seemingly speaking about two opposed states, my question is, can we say that the point of connection between the states is that a person comes to knowledge that he's serving the Creator, he serves the upper one?

M. Laitman: No, no, no, not yet, we're still far from that.

Student: Meaning, when he comes to that understanding that he's serving the upper one, so then he's happy with his part, even though there's suffering, but his soul is happy. Can we see it that way?

M. Laitman: No.

Student: Can I ask another question from the excerpt? It is said that, make me a temple and I will dwell within them. Is it talking about the temple that we're building within ourselves, that a person builds new vessels thanks to the work in the ox to the burden and donkey to the load? And when he has the new vessels, so then he's rewarded with light being able to enter the filling of the vessel. And then my question is, in that state, there can be a place in this law of ox to the burden and not to the load that the person feels that it's not a burden. Could it be, can you make such connections?

M. Laitman: Could be, could be, yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (22:45) Is it correct to think about it like a joke?

M. Laitman: That's what?

Student: Like a joke, that the Creator does this joke. That this whole process at the end is like a joke where you're laughing from it.

M. Laitman: Could be, could be.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (23:31) The question is according to the article: How can I know if I truly advance on the path and that I don't just imagine to myself some joy or intention where I escape from dealing with the far path?

M. Laitman: It depends on how you relate to what opens up before you.

Student: How can I turn a state of distance and difficulty into a true feeling and not just a complaint or despair?

M. Laitman: It all depends on how you relate to the path, and here you choose, actually, your next state.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (24:42) I need to say that this excerpt, we read it many times in our Ten for the last few days, and it's a very tough excerpt, it doesn't dress on the heart. A small example from the questions that arose in our Ten: In the first part, he says that the ox to the burden is a donkey to the load, that if a person accepts upon himself the burden of the kingdom of heaven, then he can deal with these two forms of exertion. In the last part of it, he writes that. a person cannot make a place for instilling the Shechina if he does not accept these two forms of exertion upon himself. My question is, how can it be that through an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load, a person receives the strength to make room for instilling the Shechina?

M. Laitman: Actually, from the whole excerpt, it's clear how a person needs to receive what comes to him – as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load. And how he should relate to this? What does it mean, an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load? These are two ways that are already in a person's nature that he needs to discover towards the work of the Creator, that's it.

Student: How, through these two forms of exertions, as they're created in a person, the ability that there is a place for the Shechina, that it opens a place for the Shechina? Why, through these two actions, something opens up there?

M. Laitman: No, they're not talking about if you relate this way, then something else opens up for you from the Creator, but rather how you need to receive it. When it comes to you like to an ox and to the burden and the donkey to the load.

Reader: We can also move ahead to the next excerpt, Excerpt 8, Rav. There are other excerpts in the document and we're finishing this topic today.

M. Laitman: Well, you're saying that this might answer it?

Rav reads: Excerpt 8. RABASH, Article No. 37 (1991), "What Is the 'Torah' and What Is 'The Statute of the Torah,' in the Work?"

“We must work with the will to receive, called “body”, coercively, meaning as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load. This course of work is only before one is rewarded with purity, whereas after one has been rewarded with purity, which implies to us the matter of the red cow, is rewarded with work on which a yoke has never been placed. At that time, his work is no longer coercive, and he serves the Creator from love.”

Meaning, he doesn't work because he must, and doesn't feel like the Creator is compelling him. But rather he feels that the drive to the work, towards a connection with the Creator, that it comes from him – from the person himself.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (29:16) Also, in our Ten, it was tough. And one of the questions that repeatedly arises each day is, how do we take that into our work in the Ten?

M. Laitman: The work in the Ten must come to you from you reading Excerpt Number 7, and then you reach 8.

Student: So, exactly in Excerpt 8, it very much helped what you said, that a person needs to connect himself to the Creator.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Should that also be our work in the Ten, that we need to connect ourselves to the friends through our work, that we want to enter into that?

M. Laitman: Well, well?

Student: So, how do we do that, as an ox to the burden, as a donkey to the load? How do we approach the Ten, as an ox to the burden, as a donkey to the load?

M. Laitman: By you receiving what he writes to you, let's say in Excerpt Number 7, so it is clear to you what you need to reach in your relation towards the friends and to the Creator. And how to receive it, how to accept it; if you enter with them into a right connection, then you connect to them truly, as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load.

Student: Is it inside me, it's not something that I expect from the friends, to connect myself to the friends, it's about that?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (31:49) How can I, how can we, build this point to the Creator that He will dwell in us at every single moment? Because that request is, or that construction, it's each day, it's not one time. So, how can we cause in our work, or each time, in a new effort, time and again. That the Creator will always have this place to dwell between us?

M. Laitman: You need to know that in the beginning of the work, why you're doing it, in order to reach such a relation.

Student: What is this attitude that we should change so that we can see that the Creator wants to be between us and to let him manage that. To let this upper force, to let it manage the things? How do we cause the upper one to manage our whole work, this entire load?

M. Laitman: If we receive this work correctly, as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load, then both these lines – these two approaches – which we relate to the Creator, then they lead us to the feeling of the Creator.

Student: That's what I wanted to ask, the feeling of the Creator. I don't understand it, and it's not something that the intellect needs to understand. He says that that place is far from a person, that making a place for the Creator, a person is far from that understanding. Why, specifically on that point, about understanding that we always have to work above reason? How on that point do we always rise above our individual desires, and always wish to take our general desire of the Ten? How can it make the load, this journey, how can it make it easier?

M. Laitman: Specifically, because you let go of your individual forms and want to reach the collective, the general form. So that in it there's the connection with everyone and want to make this happen – and I hope you're through this – reaching a connection between you and the Creator.

Student: But you feel that with friends, this load, or this path, is very difficult for them. How can we make it so that we will feel as partners of the Creator, and that we will make it easier?

M. Laitman: I don't think it needs to be easier, it needs to be closer.

Student: So that's a point, how can we bring the friends closer when we feel that it's difficult for them? How can we bring them closer to this journey, to this point? What can we do other than prayer?

M. Laitman: Together. Together and then you'll feel that it's easy.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (35:29) The processes depicted here that the Kabbalists have attained. Those same processes that we go through in the Ten that we develop. Is that my measurement for the state I am in, as the relationship between Malchut and Bina? That that's how I can check myself whether I'm working as an ox, as a donkey. It doesn't matter how, that I'm coming closer to the Creator, that I'm all in these transitions in this elevator, is that correct?

M. Laitman: No, I don't think it's exactly like that. When we relate to our work, as Malchut to Bina, then if we relate this way to the way Malchut relates to Bina, this is the correct form. But it's the form of already being in the final correction.

Student: Can you detail it?

M. Laitman: There's no need to go into details, you need to enter this with force.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (37:45) When the ox agrees to the burden and when the donkey agrees to the load, what do we learn about the host or the landlord about that?

M. Laitman: They learn that that which comes to them, that they are as an ox and they are as the load. And that they have to accept it because it comes specifically from the host or the landlord.

Student: Then they learn how to become aware of that landlord? What changes in the attitude to the landlord when they agree to accept that burden?

M. Laitman: They agree to accept the burden because it comes from the landlord.

Student: And that's it, what then becomes born out of the connection with the landlord?

M. Laitman: The next step, the next stage.

Student: Meaning a comparison with a donkey, if you put a load on it, it stands there, it stays there. And the landlord needs to give it some kind of incentive, some kind of thing to push it forward, either an incentive or something from behind. How can we relate to the landlord in that state, in the perception of that burden?

M. Laitman: The landlord needs to give the beginning of the motion of the movement to the ox and to the donkey, and to advance that way.

Student: And the ox just needs to agree to everything, right? Her work in this is just an agreement – to agree to what the landlord brings.

M. Laitman: Yes, but in advance there should be a desire in us to receive a sign of the right work from the landlord.

Student: And no other reward, just that?

M. Laitman: Of course.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (40:29) How can a person increase their emotional relationship with the landlord?

M. Laitman: That depends on the people around him, his friends, the group. It depends on them, how much a person is filled with this concept, this definition – the landlord towards the owner, towards the ox, towards the donkey.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (41:23) How can we replace coercive work with work out of love?

M. Laitman: Through receiving a desire, a new desire, where the relation to the work will be a new relation, a new attitude.

Student: When the landlord pressures him more and more, how does a person accept that out of love?

M. Laitman: He accepts it with love that rises each time above, more and more.

Student: What lets a person continue that coercive work?

M. Laitman: What enables? That he breaks out with his prayer to the Creator with his requests for the Creator to help him.

Student: What does he want from the Creator? To help him with what?

M. Laitman: To help him relate anew to the work with the ox and the donkey. Yes, that's how it is.

Student: The role of the friends in the Ten, is that to take the load of the friend?

M. Laitman: No, no, no, just to add importance to this.

Student: To remain with that heavy load but to continue with importance?

M. Laitman: Continue with the work of the burden, extend to the work of the burden, the importance of the work.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (44:01) The goal of the ox is – I'm confused how I ask about it. How can we not cause it to always ask about the ox, the whole thing is not here, the ox or the donkey, it's with the landlord. So, why are we always engaging here with the ox and the donkey and we're leaving the landlord?

M. Laitman: There's probably no choice, only through the donkey and the ox, you can bring yourself towards the Creator, towards the host.

Student: Maybe I can add to that question: Let's say that a person is capable himself to connect his ox or his donkey. Or does he reach through that a prayer, meaning by failing to connecting the ox and the donkey, then he reaches a prayer, or then he reaches a prayer to the landlord?

M. Laitman: I don't think it's essential.

Student: If I feel that I fail, that there's people who are very successful in that, but I don't succeed to connect that ox or that donkey. Like, through that I reach a prayer that I'll finally succeed to do so, a correct prayer for Lishma?

M. Laitman: I don't know but they say that it probably helps.

Student: How can you know that you need to give the ox and the donkey exactly what they need for work and no more and no less?

M. Laitman: It's not written here, I don't know.

Question (Kyiv 1): (46:47) When a person observes all of the necessary work, he participates in lessons, duties, in everything possible. Does that mean that he accepted upon himself the burden of the kingdom of heaven, and how do we observe that condition?

M. Laitman: If a person feels he's done it all, then he is still on the way.

Question (W Spa): (48:20) How can you be a good donkey in the work in the Ten, when we're scrutinizing each time something in the heart and we're always trying to bestow and each time we're revealing that we're more and more egoistic? Again, how can we be a good donkey to the load in the work, in the Ten, when each time we're working on the heart and finding in our heart that we're more and more egoistic?

M. Laitman: Well, and what? Is it not not called, advancement?

Question (Almaty): (49:16) How can we accept the burden of the kingdom of heaven, happily?

M. Laitman: Together, as much as possible.

Question (Moscow 7): (49:49) There are friends who rented the center in Moscow, they invested a lot of efforts into it. And they feel like an ox to the burden, because they exerted a lot of forces into that, but with all that, we have just one friend who's coming to that center. It's like some kind of lack of focus, that there are those who invest forces and those who wish to connect in the Ten and you say that we should connect together. How can we go through this process truly together? It's very important.

M. Laitman: I don't know. I don't know how you who remain in your place, how you can help those who are in another place. I understand the question, it's not a question at all, we need to investigate how to build this question.

Question (Unity 2): (51:34) Also for us, we have a complicated question: This whole situation is complex and we reached an agreement that if we agree, if we adhere to Rav, then all the work becomes joyful. Also, bestowal, too, because Rav gives us such examples of connection with the Creator that we can adhere to Rav, reach the connection, reach the lesson with this intention to adhere to Rav and bestow to the whole world Kli. If all the Tens came like this, then we'll have a sea of love.

M. Laitman: Well, we’ll scrutinize it, in essence, I agree with you, but it's very difficult work.

Student: But if there is such greatness of Rav?

M. Laitman: If it was truly like that, then yes.

Question (W Latin 24): (53:06) How can we take the role of the ox and the donkey in our intention, in our heart? And not just, so it won't be these words, ox and donkey, as words, but that we'll truly feel them?

M. Laitman: It will be very difficult for me to express: The donkey and the ox are precisely the correct expressions, the correct appellations for the work, whether it's mind or heart, and we shouldn't replace those.

Student: She wants to ask how do we take that into feelings, so it won't just be words. How do we feel ox and donkey?

M. Laitman: Get deeper and deeper, you have many verses where it's written about a donkey and an ox, and what you can attribute to the ox and what you can attribute to the donkey. How to take on that form of the ox, that form of the donkey, so it won't be like a donkey or an ox, but as something internal.

Reader: Rav, we're coming close to the end of the lesson, so maybe we can finish with the last excerpt in the document. It's a very emotional, inspiring excerpt, it will help us connect to the Excerpt 15. It's from letter number 9, excerpt number 15, the last excerpt in the document.

M. Laitman: So much so, “I find myself committed and obligated, as today and as always to be as an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load, all day and all night. I will not rest.”

Reading: (55:46) 15. Baal HaSulam, Letter No. 9

I find myself committed and obligated, as today and as always, to be as an ox to the burden and as a donkey to the load, all day and all night. I will not rest from searching some place where I can bring some contentment to my Maker. Even in this day that I am in, I am happy to work under a great burden even seventy years, without any knowledge of its success (even my whole life), except that it is certainly the way that I have been commanded to walk in all His ways and to adhere to Him, which I have heard initially.

At the same time, I cannot excuse myself at all by any notion or contemplation from doing any work for His sake because of my lowliness. I crave and think all day about the sublimity of the work of God, in such sublimity that I cannot even write about it.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (57:21) After such words from Baal HaSulam, I am inspired by his height, that he's writing from a different place. He's not just afraid of that work, he writes about how he seeks it, how he chose Jerusalem, etc. How can we also come closer to such a form of work?

M. Laitman: What's to do with the kids who have become older, that's what you're asking, yes?

Student: How can we begin to come closer to such an attitude that Baal HaSulam has to the work of the Creator?

M. Laitman: I don't know but it seems to me that these excerpts are relatively easy. And we're not allowed to, just like that, let go of them.

Student: Many of us in many turns have read these excerpts many times, and in the intellect there are certain depictions. But how can we make it into some habit?

M. Laitman: I actually see your state as an advanced state, advancing correctly, because there isn't here those who understand more or understand less – do understand and don't understand. But rather you're coming to some line, one line. And that's why I think we have the right future.

Student: Would you give examples of an athlete who adds weight day after day? How can we also enter into such work of exercising and adding?

M. Laitman: He gives us everything, he gives us questions, and then some of the explanation. And he wants us to continue the explanation all the way, so see it that way. When you read, and then you'll understand what kind of approach is needed.

Student: So, shortly to read and to discuss between us, that's the approach to progressing?

M. Laitman: Could be.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (01:00:29) When a person reads these words of Baal HaSulam, and also like in Excerpt 4, how Rabash writes. So he reveals a certain, how Baal HaSulam and Rabash were in this devotion. And he sees mainly his smallness, how far he is, how small he is in relation to that. So what's the next stage from that?

M. Laitman: The next stage?

Student: Yes, when he realizes how small he is compared to what Baal HaSulam and Rabash depict here.

M. Laitman: What does he discover in such a stage?

Student: That he's low, that he's small, and Rabash and Baal HaSulam are very great, and he very much wants to be like them. But he sees such a huge gap between himself and them?
