Baal HaSulam. Shamati 241. Call Upon Him When He Is Near

Reader: Hello friends, in the first part of the lesson we are going to study from a lesson from December 2nd, 2021. The article is Shamati 241, "Call Upon Him When He Is Near." You can find it in the writings of Baal HaSulam or in the Shamati book.

M. Laitman: Read, so Shamati 241, "Call Upon Him When He Is Near."

M. Laitman (Source Text/Commentary): (00:33) Call upon Him when He is near. That is what Isaiah the prophet says. We must understand what "when He is near" means since "The whole earth is full of His glory!" Thus He is always near. He fills the whole of reality, it's only us that can't feel it. So what does "when He is near" mean? It would seem that there is a time when He is not near. Sometimes he sees this, when sometimes it is not for man. The thing is that states are always evaluated with respect to the attaining and feeling individual. If one does not feel His nearness, then nothing will come out of it, as everything is measured according to one's feeling. One person may feel the world as filled with abundance and that the Creator is filling the whole of reality and the other will not feel the goodness of the world as if the Creator is not in the world at all. So he cannot say that there is a good world. Instead, he states as he feels—that the world is filled with suffering. And the prophet warns about that: "Call you upon Him when He is near." He comes and says, "Know that the fact that you are calling on the Creator is because He is near." It means that now you have an opportunity. If you pay attention, you will feel that the Creator is near you; it is a sign of the Creator's nearness. The evidence of this is that we must know that man is not naturally qualified for Dvekut [adhesion] with the Creator since it is against man's nature. We're opposite of that nature. By creation, man has only a desire to receive, while Dvekut (adhesion) is only to bestow. However, as the Creator calls upon man, it creates a second nature within him where he wants to revoke his own nature and adhere to Him, to the Creator. Hence, one should know that his speaking words of Torah and prayer is only from the Creator, only from the Creator. He should never think of saying that it is "My power and the might of my hand," since it is the complete opposite of his might. This is similar to one who is...This means, that if some pressure comes to a person to come closer, it comes from the Creator. Reading again: This is similar to one who is lost in a dense forest and sees no way out of it to an inhabited place, so he remains despaired and thinks that he will never return to his home, completely lost in this forest, in our life. But when he sees a person from afar or hears a human voice, the desire and craving to return to his origin will immediately awaken in him, and he will begin to shout and ask of someone to come and save him. Likewise, one who has lost the good way and entered a bad place and has already accustomed himself to live among beasts, for the part of the will to receive, it will never occur to him that he should return to a place of reason, of Kedusha [holiness]. If a person falls, it has to be an additional force acting upon him, bringing him out. Yet when he hears the voice calling him, he awakens to repent. Usually, what we think is that it's us, on our own, but this is the voice of the Creator, not his own voice. But if he has not completed his actions on the path of correction, meaning he hasn't done enough quality and quantity of exertion, he cannot feel or believe that this is the voice of the Creator, and he thinks that it is his power and the might of his hand. This is what the prophet warns about, that one should overcome one's view and thought and believe with complete faith that it is the voice of the Creator.

M. Laitman: This is why we have to support each other in the group with all our means so that a person will be more and more confident and assured and feeling that any awakening he gets is only from the Creator.

M. Laitman (Source Text/Commentary): (06:51) Reading again: Hence, when the Creator wishes to bring him out of the dense forest, darkness, He shows him a light from afar, and the person gathers and musters the remains of his strength to walk on the path that the light shows him in order to obtain it. But if he does not attribute the light to the Creator and does not say that the Creator is calling him, the light disappears from him and he remains standing in the forest. Meaning, all there is is one option: to remain on the path. It's every time, to remain with whatever I have I got from the Creator, and then we will certainly fall to a darker forest and we will merit discovering the Creator in a clearer way. Reading again: Thus, he could have now shown his whole heart to the Creator, to come and save him from the bad place, from the will to receive, and bring him to a place of reason called a place of the sons of Adam, a place of people, as in Adameh la Elyon [I will be like the Most High], meaning the desire to bestow, in adhesion, Dvekut. Instead, he does not use this opportunity and remains once more as before in this dark forest.

Question (PT 24): (09:01) Is there a difference—you were speaking about the importance of reading the articles. Is there a difference between reading it or listening to it?

M. Laitman: Reading it is better.

Student: Can I have another question?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: You explained today that the created being responds and what does it mean that the dawn doesn’t awaken me, I awaken the dawn?

M. Laitman: It means that we have to, by all kinds of means, to awaken ourselves to come closer to the Creator, even though you may say the Creator is always first. But as much as we can make of ourselves all kinds of signs to wake up and to turn to Him, we must do that.

Question (PT 32): (10:07) It turns out that to build the Creator in the Ten is just to raise sensitivity to Him?

M. Laitman: Yes, nothing more than that. A point from which we may build the sensitivity is in us. That's called the point in the heart. That’s a true part from Divinity above and what we add to that is all our qualities, all our desires which is only to be in adhesion with that point, a point of connection with the Creator.

Question (PT 35): (10:53) What does it mean to complete our exertion? We’re saying that the Creator is first and last, so what do I do by completing the exertion?

M. Laitman: It’s when whatever you can do, that do. It doesn't matter what the Creator is doing. Whatever He’s doing, He’s doing. Bit by bit, we are discovering how He truly does everything but He needs our awakening. As much as He awakened us first, He nonetheless wants for us to add on our own, with our mind and emotion, to be adhered to Him.

Student: Is part of the exertion to ask from of Creator constantly the same request until I feel I really got what I needed?

M. Laitman: The exertion is when you are looking for a connection with your friends in order to establish such states between yourselves so you can call these states "come and see." We come and we see. We have built, “you have made me.” We built the image of the Creator between us, a mutual force of bestowal.

Question (PT 31): (12:14) What does it mean that the Creator shows man some light from afar?

M. Laitman: It’s when He only awakens us. It is not that He is about to be revealed inside us. In our internality we have to prepare ourselves to be adapted, to feel Him, to understand Him, to attain Him. This is something we have to build on our own already. Awakening is something you get from outside, attainment is something you get inside.

Student: According to what do you see a person or a man closer to the Creator than someone else? Can you recognize such a thing? How do you recognize it?

M. Laitman: That’s not something we want to measure because we can't do that in a true way. That’s why I don't want to talk about that. You just have to see how much a person invests in the Ten and maybe he's not so capable of investing because we don't know how much the depth of the corrupt will to receive lies within each and every one. But to the extent that a person tries, you have to accept him and help him this way.

Question (PT 31): (13:46) In the beginning of the lesson, you talked about Ten’s meetings where four friends would come and it’s too bad and you have an opportunity to annul here. There's a state where there's a certain resistance without a real reason and there are states where there's supposedly an external reason that prevents a person from participating. In both cases, are we speaking about lack of desire to connect, that if a person really would want to connect he wouldn’t have preventions?

M. Laitman: A lack of desire to connect is natural, that’s clear you have that. The question is how much we, upon this lack of desire to connect, when you always have an opportunity to run away and to do something, you nonetheless overcome and you do go to this meeting and you try to strengthen your group as much as you can with all of your strength. There is no justification here. There is none. It’s truly so.

Question (Latin 2): (15:17) What is the quantity or quality that lets us feel that everything came from the Creator? In that feeling, what is quantity and what is quality?

M. Laitman: I can't start taking care of that because we don't have the clear data for each and every one, but as you grow, you grow both in quantity and in quality. It’s like an embryo growing and then, from a certain state on, we can measure both the quantity and the quality. It doesn't come all at once. It’s not immediately.

Question (Kyiv 2): (16:05) According to the article, this inner prayer we’re trying to build, is that from above or a result of our efforts as a group?

M. Laitman: I can't really answer that because it doesn't depend only on one Ten, moreover on one person. Rather, we are in a process where the Upper Providence, the Creator's relation in general to all of humanity, to all of the souls, He is performing the actions and we are a part of it. That’s why, in the meantime, we can't exactly talk about—we only learn in a partial way how—where we can add, and where we can make it more efficient, where we can enhance the development, nothing more. Let’s come to some of the first degrees on the path where we feel ourselves in the Ibur, in the conception, impregnation, and we'll have the mind and emotion of the embryo and our adhesion to a certain extent, and can develop our connection with the Creator somehow. The Creator is revealed in the connection between us, "come and see," right? He's not revealed outside of the created beings. So let’s first come to that, that’s the main thing. For us, it speaks about the correction of the breaking of the vessel of Adam HaRishon.

Question (Moscow 6): (18:15) The Creator only awakens chosen people with a point in the heart. What to do with the other people?

M. Laitman: No, first we have to reach adhesion with the Creator. And with respect to others we have to publicize the correction in general without the internal work, but rather in general, that still the future of the world is in the connection between everyone and that all of us are connecting correctly and with mutual help, and that’s how we reach the correction of creation. Otherwise, we’ll always advance from blows to blows, when basically the lack of our connection in each and every moment is what brings us these blows. Instead of attaining good things, we attain opposite forms and beyond that, no. The good future of the world by connection is something that we have to publish.

Question (Latin 8): (20:00) We say that man was created in the image of the Creator, so why is man's nature the will to receive? Is the Creator only the will to receive?

M. Laitman: We didn't really learn that yet. The stages that the Creator created, the will to receive, we call it the form of Adam in the Garden of Eden, that he was naked and didn't need any clothings, any corrections on his will to receive. Then, there was the sin and he fell from in order to bestow to in order to receive. All these things, we’re not studying about. We will get closer to studying about it when during the correction, we will rise from in order to receive to in order to bestow. Then, we’ll know what the true form is that was previous to the egoistic form. We’ll learn that. It's not so important to us right now. It’s a theoretical question.

Question (Croatia): (21:41) Why is it written that, "the voice of the Creator" and not the sound of the Creator or the calling of the Creator? Is there something unique about it? What does it mean, “the voice of the Creator?”

M. Laitman: No, now it doesn't matter to us. You're asking the right questions but we’ll have to explain why it’s "the voice of the Creator" he hears and why doesn't he feel it in a different sense. Voice is the degree of Bina. That's why in this degree he hears this.

Question (ITA 1): (22:39) When the distance overcomes, increases, does His voice become stronger or weaker?

M. Laitman: It all depends on the intensity of connection between people.

Question (Kavkaz): (23:09) What practical actions can the Ten help a friend with to respond correctly for an awakening he got?

M. Laitman: Read about that in the articles of Rabash about society. I have nothing to add to that.

Question (Haifa 1): (23:31) Baal HaSulam writes in the beginning of the article that the earth was filled with His glory and He is always close. This fact, are we supposed to take it with faith above reason?

M. Laitman: That’s from the perspective of the Creator being close, because we’re in Him and He fills everything.

Student: But we’re supposed to receive it as a fact, in faith above reason?

M. Laitman: I don't understand what you're talking about. You have an opportunity to accept it above reason, accept it. What are you asking? As if, I’ll tell you yes, so, what? You’ve received it already?

Student: Because it seems like a basic condition to understand this whole article, like its starting point, the base.

M. Laitman: You are correct.

Question (PT 18): (24:32) How does a person in that thick forest, the moment he hears the voice of the Creator, he doesn't search for the right path or the right key but he goes and breaks his heart with the lock?

M. Laitman: I don't understand these philosophical questions. He acts according to what he feels. That’s all. There’s nothing else here. He feels he lost the way, he doesn't know why he's alive, and there is a true goal in life as he hears everything, right? But it is the opposite of his life, so he makes the calculations what to do.

Question (Siberia): (25:31) What does it mean to bring the Ten closer to the Creator?

M. Laitman: No, we have to connect everyone together, the Ten and the Creator.

Question (PT 23): (25:49) During the lesson, you said that whoever can't read the article alone probably won't succeed and it was hard for me to hear it because I'm in the unsuccessful part. We meet on Zoom meetings, we constantly read Shamati articles. When I read to the Ten, I feel all the inner content in that paragraph or two I read goes in. When the friends read, it's a bit more difficult but something I can grasp. From each one alone, I can't ever read Shamati, any Kabbalah writings, but if it's at least with one more friend, I can do it.

M. Laitman: Ask from your friends, ask your friends to be a bit more together so you can discover these things, all the more so. What’s the problem? Why are you turning to me as if—what can I do? This is how you can feel it’s better, so do it. Do as much as you can.

Student: Because you said that, he that can't read alone probably won't succeed. You just said it, that we need to read these articles alone and I'm saying I can't.

M. Laitman: Okay, later you’ll learn how to read it on your own. In the meantime, read. Don't look for excuses. Read as much as you can with your group, without your group, as much as you can. All the rest will be there, will come. The changes will come. Okay?

Question (Zafon 2): (27:48) How not to fall into a fantasy that we're coming closer to the Creator?

M. Laitman: Measure. Are we coming closer or not? That’s all by extent that we connect between us and we hear, maybe together already, the voice of the Creator turning to us. Are we capable of being together already? Meaning we are in one boat. We're rising and descending on the waves. Are we this way already or not yet? Each one is still on his own.

Question (PT 33): (28:39) The Creator is supposedly always calling a person and here he’s saying it’s a special opportunity and he shouldn't miss out on it. So how to relate to the reading? Is this every moment or to recognize it in certain times?

M. Laitman: As he writes here, the Creator turns to a person, calling him. And the fact that the voice of the Creator is always there, that’s a different kind of illumination.

Question (Tel Aviv 4): (29:32) How can we know if we should respond with resistance to what the Creator is awakening in us or the opposite? How can we know it?

M. Laitman: Search for such states. It all depends on our sensitivity. Either we discover a negative or positive relation from the Creator to us, coming closer or further away. But for us to feel that we are the result of His address or His relation, there is no place that He’s not taking care of us, either coming closer or increasing the distance. It’s truly so, that all the time, and that is why we always have to be in connection with Him and to locate this dynamic – in what way is it going, coming closer or growing further? By that, we develop ourselves, we’ll discover our own sensitivity.

Student: We’re saying that we always need to awaken the friends.

M. Laitman: Are you saying now something new here? Of course.

Student: So that’s the question. When do we respond differently, except for just adding in connection? Is there another…?

M. Laitman: There is no other response except for adding connection and presenting this connection to the Creator. We have no other response. You need nothing more. That’s the way to come closer to the final correction. You grow, you grow, you grow together until all the Tens connect together, until all of us come to a state of – we’re all connected as one man in one heart, and that’s the final correction. We have no other way.

Student: When can we say we resist what the Creator gave us?

M. Laitman: On the path, you'll see that you're resisting it every time, every time your left line is growing.

Student: And that’s called the screen or it has nothing to do with it?

M. Laitman: It's not the screen, it is the resistance. It's not the resistance to the light that comes when you want to receive it in order to bestow. It’s a general resistance to in order to bestow, meaning it is a Klipa, it’s a shell.

Student: How can I discern between resistance to the light, or from me, from the shell?

M. Laitman: Your egoistic resistance is when you don't want to connect. That’s the egoistic resistance. Resistance when it’s already with respect to the light, is when the light comes already. Once you’ve made the restriction on yourself, and the light comes to you, it comes to you for you to build the screen and to receive the light in order to bestow, above all of your resistances. Even more than that, when you start receiving the light only to bestow contentment to the Creator rather than for yourself.

Student: It’s only in a state of a feeling of an ascent?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes there too. There are ascents and descents. We’ll continue according to the situation, let us not jump.

Question (PT 19): (33:28) We say that behind every friend is the Creator. So, what’s the damage caused by disregarding another friend in the Ten?

M. Laitman: Harm is done, what can you do? When you disregard a friend, you’re disregarding the Creator. That’s how Rabash also writes and it’s exactly the same. So you have to be cautious. Bit by bit, that’s what we learn.

Question (Kyiv 1): (34:11) The Creator calls us, that beam of light through the forest, and we try to turn to Him. And you also said that from the Keter light comes to the Malchut, and we have to build the light back from Malchut to Keter. So there’s clothing of the light on one another?

M. Laitman: The light of Hochma and the light of Hassadim?

Student: I don't know, you just said that from the Keter, the light comes to the Malchut and Malchut…

M. Laitman: Direct light and reflected light. That’s what we learn, that’s what goes on in the Partzuf. Soon we’re going to go back to the Preface, and we’ll learn that in a more broad manner. I’m now stuck with these articles with you. Soon.

Question (PT 30): (35:18) Towards the Ten, I also don't have to think that I’m helping them advance, but that the Ten is helping me advance?

M. Laitman: I have to think that with all of my efforts towards the Ten, it’s the Ten that is helping me advance.

Student: Why if we don't ascribe the light to the Creator, the light is lost?

M. Laitman: The light is gone because we don't connect to its origin.

Question (Unity 2): (35:56) What does it mean to be sensitive to the voice of the Creator?

M. Laitman: Sensitive to the voice of the Creator means that I am always looking for what the Creator wants for me in each and every moment. I'm always under His care.

Student: I ascribe and justify everything that happens to me in corporeality and in spiritual work. Are there states that I don't need to agree with, certain states that are given to me?

M. Laitman: Try it. The main thing is the examination is in the group. You have to be incorporated in your group, to annul before the group and the friends, and in this way you examine – are you acting correctly.

Question (PT 6): (37:01) Why is it that I care more about the friends and the Ten, and that they will be happy, and healthy, and strong, and I don't care about Shamati, or the articles. I less and less care about them. Like what's happening in…

M. Laitman: Okay, there are times that it’s this way, and sometimes it’s different. There’s expansion and contraction in these things too. The main thing is to keep on going, don't let go of all the exertion.

Question (PT 6): (37:46) I have two questions. First thing, about the study materials. I’d like to ask maybe about this form of the world Kli because you just said that you feel stuck with these articles. Lately, you’re saying that from Italy and the Sunday Congress we had that we’re becoming one world Kli, a feeling of one world vessel. So, the question is, are there study materials you think we should study now that are better? Because friends want Preface, some friends want Shamati, some want Baal HaSulam articles. The Kli is very diverse and there are a lot of demands.

M. Laitman: We don't have time. You see, we’re already two hours, only to cover, to scrutinize for the first time this short article from Shamati, and it is a very important article. It is really about the way I respond to what the Creator awakens in me. According to this article, maybe we should build or make a picture of the group in a different way, the relations between us differently in order to be ready to respond to the Creator in each and every moment. Just like in mechanics, we organize our instruments in order to perceive the Creator's relationship to us. That’s how He talks to us. So along with that, our whole material should be related to the system we’re in, the system of Adam, which is The Preface. Then we organize it together. When will we come to that? I really hope that we’re already… well, the Preface is something we have to keep on going where we are, complete it. But look where I am. I am under pressure between what we have and what we want. That’s why, I don't know. I have to answer the woman's questions now. Look what’s going to happen. Men, recommend to me what we should do. Between yourselves you should have a discussion, what should we do with where we are. Can we add an hour to the study, maybe in the evening, or some other time? I don't know. I do know that even in these lessons we’re having now, there is also – what percentage of our friends are coming to the lesson? Others learn in other hours, if at all, and so everything depends on the receiver.

Question (W German): (41:14) The feeling that the connection to the Creator is possible through the Ten, it always disappears. Should we reach a state that this feeling will be constant, or is there a need to renew this feeling every time?

M. Laitman: We have to renew the feeling every time. There is no constant feeling, that’s a lie. Every time we have to feel ourselves as if we are in a changing connection.

Question (W Chile): (41:45) How important is it to be sorry, to repent when we're not paying attention to the Creator's call for us?

M. Laitman: To feel sorry, maybe we may need that, that we’re not sensitive enough for it, but as quick as we can, to start working. Meaning, strengthen the connection between us in order to not miss out on the Creator.

Question (W Moscow 8): (42:15) Is there an action, any action, by which I’m free from the Creator?

M. Laitman: There’s no such thing. How can that be? The desire to receive is entirely in the upper light, and the upper light working on it, it takes care of it constantly, without breaks.

Student: Why is a Creator choking us with His envy?

M. Laitman: Choking us? I don't understand that.

Student: Because He's always there in every action. It’s as if only He, only the Creator.

M. Laitman: If you feel that He is in all your actions, so you are in Gmar Tikkun already.

Question (W Moscow 6): (43:07) What does it mean to hear the voice of the Creator together? How does that happen in the Ten?

M. Laitman: When all of us from the connection between us feel how the Creator is one force, stabilizes us, establishes us, and works on all us together. It is a sign that we are connected to a Partzuf.

Question (W Heb): (43:36) What does it mean to bestow?

M. Laitman: To bestow means to prefer a foreign or an alien force that is outside of me above my own desire.

Question (W Moscow 18): (43:53) What is the Creator close to? My ego or my yearning for Him?

M. Laitman: The Creator establishes our ego in order for us through this ego to start above the ego to start bestowing to one another.

Question (W Laitin 13): (44:18) Missing the opportunity means that we were given an opportunity to adhere to His desire, but because we haven't invested enough, we didn't take the opportunity?

M. Laitman: Correct.

Question (W Heb): (44:36) What is the corrected state of a person who usually feels he's despaired, or usually feels close to the Creator?

M. Laitman: There's no such thing that a person feels close to the Creator and despaired, no. If he's despaired, it's a result of being distant from the Creator.

Question (W PT 38): (45:06) Are there states in which a person hears the voice of the Creator but he isn't able to follow it?

M. Laitman: There's no such thing. If he hears the voice of the Creator, so he has an opportunity to connect to the group and keep going ahead towards extra connection. We are in the period of the final generation, the last generation. That's why we have no way to take care of anything else but the connection between us until we reach the final correction.
