Part 3: The Importance of Participating in the Preparation for the Lesson - Selected Excerpts from the sources

Reader: Dear friends, we start a new topic today. We will read from a document, a compilation of excerpts on the subject of the importance of participating in the preparation for the lesson.

M. Laitman: The perception of reality depends on importance, and importance is very dependent on how much a person can invest, and how much he's truly drawn to it. It's possible to raise the importance in various ways, and according to how much it rises, we will discuss it. Ultimately, there are many types of this.

Reader: So, let's begin the importance of participating in the preparation for the lesson.

Reading: (02:12) 1. Pri Tzadik, VaYeshev, 3

The first Hassidim spent an hour directing their hearts to the Creator before praying. The word "directing" refers to the alignment of the heart, to focus the heart so that it is not preoccupied, coveting and lusting after the affairs of this world, but rather aligned and directed towards one's Father in heaven.

M. Laitman: Meaning, we need to really be cleansed of all the thoughts, desires, calculations, whatever it may be, and to make sure that what emerges from the person is aligned directly with the Creator. And in that way, there is a chance that the person will cross this distance that exists between himself and the Creator, and will then be able to open all the doors, to open all the...

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (04:41) The Rav mentioned the Yosher that comes from man to the Creator. What is that Yosher, this line?

M. Laitman: That directness is the inclination a person has towards the Creator, which passes through several conditions, which a person sets to begin with, sets in the beginning, and that's how it'll be in the end as well. And that's how he rises directly to the whole of the Creator.

Student: This tendency needs to be cleaned?

M. Laitman: Yes, it needs to be amplified and purified.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (05:55) How does a person cleanse  his thoughts?

M. Laitman: I suppose it can be done.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (06:47) I see that from day to day I don't control my thoughts. There's a thought that comes, and then I have to cope with it. Now, what does it mean to cleanse  my thoughts?

M. Laitman: The thoughts that come to a person, that the person catches, are… Well, we are required to cleanse them. We are required to cleanse  them, to purify them from various thoughts, various things which can lead us astray from the short and direct path to the attainment of the Creator.

Student: I see that, I don't know, 99% of my thoughts are about myself. It's the will to receive.

M. Laitman: Yes?

Student: So now, to cleanse  a thought is to pray to the Creator that He will give me adhesion with Him, that He will embrace me? Is that cleansing your thought, or is it a different action specific to the thought that came to me?

M. Laitman: I do not know. But I suppose it's anything that can constitute a disruption to the straight line.

Student: What follows is that most of the time, if I relate to reality this way, all of reality is pretty much a disturbance. The question is, how to take advantage of this disturbance to go back to the direct straight line? It's only the connection with the Creator, like a clarion, that, oh, I have a thought, oh, it's the Creator sending me that, now I have to be in contact with Him? Or there's any meaning to the specific thought, the specific disturbance that arises? How do I decipher what it wants to tell me?

M. Laitman: You're correct, there are disturbances where it's possible to move aside, to reject and there are such, you can’t.

Student: There are disturbances that have to do with man's will to receive, and disturbances that have to do with the work with the friends, the connection between us.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: The disturbances of the connection between us, they cause me suffering, I don't like them, they sadden me, that I even have such thoughts, how I'm thinking badly about the path, or the friends, or anything that happens with them. What can I do with this kind of disturbances and how to overcome them?

M. Laitman: Ask, ask, that's all.

Student: So what am I asking for, I'm telling the Creator, take the disturbance away or give me connection, or what?

M. Laitman: Anything. Anything that can bring you closer to the Creator and to place you face to face with the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (10:55) Rav, it says here that the first Hassidim would pray for an hour to aim their heart to the source. Well, what is that request?

M. Laitman: The heart is the person's will, the person's desire. The more a person works on his will, directing it to the Creator, to become more connected to the Creator, willing to accept Him, that is called the work in the heart. And that's the primary thing that's most important to do.

Student: Is that a lesson preparation or just some action?

M. Laitman: Both. A lesson and every action that a person wishes to succeed in.

Student: So, what's the difference let's say between lesson preparation and now that you're in the lesson?

M. Laitman: Even now, in the lesson, we have to direct ourselves, all of us, towards the connection between us, the connection between us.

Student: Is there a difference between the preparation and execution itself in the lesson?

M. Laitman: Yes, we need to have preparation, and also we need to add to the preparation the inclination to be connected.

Student: And that's both in the preparation and the lesson itself?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Okay, So let's say today we come 20 or 30 minutes before the lesson, we prepare, and then begins the lesson. So, it has to be the same direction both in the preparation and in the lesson. Where's the difference between them is what I'm asking?

M. Laitman: The difference is, the preparation is also in the connection between us, and it's in total, you are building a building. The single condition into which you want to bring yourself and the Creator, all the other conditions, everything that you think is important.

Student: There is a state where a person says, okay, the preparation succeeded, we can start the lesson not in terms of time, just in terms of the feeling?

M. Laitman: That depends on the person already.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (14:45) Rav, is there a connection between deficiency and a thought that comes?

M. Laitman: Deficiency and?

Student: Thought. The thought follows the deficiency?

M. Laitman: Of course, the thought has to be an outcome of the emergence of the lack.

Student: For the cleansing of thought, can you use the environment?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, in the preparation, we need to prepare ourselves with the right deficiency for the lesson.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (15:28) When a person wakes up before dawn for the lesson, like he says here, he could be scattered in lusts and corporeal things, and what can he do when these kinds of thoughts are always in his mind and are pulling him away from being straight towards the Creator?

M. Laitman: Yes, that may be. That this is how it happens, how it transpires in his head. However, he needs to search through all the things he learned, he studied, to go through all those materials, and from there, to extract the diamond, the special thought, the special attitude, and with that to continue.

Student: From where? Where does he suddenly polish this diamond, where does he bring it up from?

M. Laitman: It's from him already being in this, already being accustomed. And so, it's easy for him to be in it.

Student: And if still during the lesson, he still has foreign thoughts, matters of this world that are deflecting him, is that fuel for work during the lesson, or he just needs to put it aside?

M. Laitman: No, he can't set it aside if we're talking about the same thing. Rather, he needs to try and disconnect from anything, any material that pushes him away from the thought about connection, and by force to advance towards connection.

Student: So, to detach from these thoughts, or to work with them in a certain direction?

M. Laitman: The solution with these thoughts is to be facing the Creator as much as possible, close to Him. And without any cessation, or without shortening it, that point of meeting the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (19:22) We learned that the vessel, is built from the descent. When we descend, if I resist the descent, is that cleaning the thought?

M. Laitman: It could be.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (19:45) When a person comes here to the study hall, the friends are already preparing, and there's a very powerful influence. How to integrate correctly with the preparation of the rest of the friends.

M. Laitman: Meaning, how can I be connected to all the friends who are already before me in dissemination, in bestowal, in some closeness? Right? I need, really, even before I go to sleep and from the moment I get up, even within sleep, I check myself where I am. And that's how I can succeed.

Student: And how, when we're all here together, how to integrate the connection with the friends to the fact that the heart needs to be straight toward the Creator? How does that, how do they become integrated, the connection with the friends with the heart being straight to the Creator?

M. Laitman: Yes, I hear. There are a few pieces of advice here of what to do with the thoughts, with the desires, with everything taking place in a person. But in any case, as much as we will come closer to that and work on that, and we'll press on that, we will see that it is all that which is created in us that we can aim it directly at the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (22:41) How to live in both directions in the preparation for the lesson where, on the one hand, the connection to the friends and to connect it to the connection with the Creator, because, what is the question? It turns out that if I try to connect to the friends, because that's our vessel to receive the Creator in it, sometimes I engage only with this, and I forget about the Creator. Or, if I try to connect to the Creator, to the quality of bestowal, come out myself, I seemingly forget about the friends. How to combine the two points?

M. Laitman: I think that connecting myself, my entire self, to the friends, and through them to the Creator, that is the solution, the correct solution.

Student: First to the friends to have a Kli.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (24:17) I heard earlier that we have to feel, we should feel closer and be face-to-face with the Creator. What does that mean?

M. Laitman: That which we place on Him all of our states, changes of states, and only in that to see our solution.

Student: And I heard that through a connection with a group, we feel connection to the Creator.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Where does the connection to the Rav come in here?

M. Laitman: It comes in that as a kind of... I think we can put it this way. If I am directed at the Creator, all of my states that incorporate into that can connect me directly also to the goal.

Student: Should we, in the preparation for the lesson, aim to come to and feel that we are aiming as one group? Should I be feeling this? Should we all be feeling this?

M. Laitman: Whoever can.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (27:06) The Creator confuses a person on purpose so he will not find Him behind the obstructions, as if there are other forces that influence him. It could be friends. It could be the external environment. Why does it come like that, directly, so we don't detect the Creator behind His obstructions?

M. Laitman: Why? We need to scrutinize that, to ask a few questions. Afterward, it will be clearer why such a disturbance, where we receive it as help, through which we can direct ourselves.

Student: In order to scrutinize such an obstruction, that it comes from the Creator, what should a person... What vessel, what instrument does a person have to scrutinize it in order to connect himself to the Creator?

M. Laitman: He needs, then, to connect himself to the Creator in a way, where, through these disturbances, more and more, that he overcomes them more and more, he comes closer to the Creator.

Student: But, initially, a person's Inclination to connect them to the Creator, that's the obstruction. The Creator deliberately does not let a person connect to the obstruction to Him.

M. Laitman: Yes, so what?

Student: So, it turns out that instead of connecting himself to the Creator, a person deals with the obstruction itself without understanding that it's a means.

M. Laitman: We need to add more to that, a little more exertion.

Student: That's the question, what is the labor? A person whose inclination is to connect himself to the obstruction instead of connecting himself to the Creator, what should he add so as to solve this problem?

M. Laitman: You have here, the first Hassadim spent an hour directing their hearts to the Creator before praying. The word “directing” refers to the alignment of the heart, meaning to straighten the heart. He aligns the heart, to focus the heart so that it is not preoccupied, coveting and lusting after the affairs of this world, but rather aligned and directed towards one's Father in heaven. Simply, increasingly, more and more, as much as possible to be directed straight to the Creator, and that connection needs to be as straight as possible, as aligned as possible, and that's all.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (31:45) The Creator gives us all kinds of conditions, He changes the conditions for us every single moment. How do we make, through our prayer, to change the conditions that the Creator gives us while our inclination is constantly in the same direction? We work in the Ten, and we see in the connection between us that the conditions change. How do we force the Creator to change the conditions in the right direction?

M.Laitman: I think that we have no choice, but when we come to the Creator, we need, we demand of Him to connect to us in one direction. And then we will feel, it doesn't matter that it doesn't change now, He doesn't change His behavior, it's just that He connects to us in a direct connection, and a straight connection.

Student: So, what change do we need to do all the time? Because it feels like a rocket that is on track, and it's constantly deviating right and left, right and left, and we have to take the engine and straighten it up, align it.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, in our common effort, how do we see that we are in the right direction?

M.Laitman: Connected in one heart and all of us together to be directed at one Creator.

Student: Is this through common prayer, Rav?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (34:28) Is the feeling of the Creator always through clothes, garments?

M. Laitman: Usually.

Student: So, there are states where sometimes you can feel Him without a garment and it will not be an illusion?

M. Laitman: Usually, it's an illusion.

Student: And this aiming for the Creator is through the Good who does good? Through the garments?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (35:17) What habit do you recommend to develop before a prayer or a lesson in order for a person to be able to open and align his heart or straighten his heart?

M. Laitman: I recommend being connected with the Creator. Being connected with the Creator with all of the person's heart. To the Creator. With the Creator. That's what a person needs to hold. That's what he needs to hold.

Reader: We can move to the next excerpt.

M. Laitman: Next excerpt. Yes, we have many excerpts.

Reader: Yes. So we'll read excerpt number two.

Reading: (37:06) 2. RABASH. Article No. 12 (1988), “What Are Torah and Work in the Way of the Creator”

Prior to learning Torah, a person should examine the reason for which he is learning Torah, for any act needs to have some purpose that causes him to do the act. It is as our sages said, “A prayer without an aim is as a body without a soul.” For this reason, before he comes to learn Torah he must prepare the intention.

M. Laitman: To prepare the intention before the study. That is actually the solution. Whereby I will keep myself connected to the Creator through the study. Okay?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (38:10) Rav, how does a person prepare the intention?

M. Laitman: How does he prepare the intention? From all the reasons and situations that awaken in the person to the Creator, he tries to understand, to feel, to grasp the most concise connection with the Creator. And that is all, the shortest, that it will be that way.

Student: So, what determines the outcome of the study? The outcome with which a person comes out of the lesson. What determines it?

M. Laitman: That all in all, the intentions, the person's attitude to the study, and to the material that he learned, that all connects him to one Creator.

Student: So, the results of the learning, a person's intention determines the results from the lesson?

M. Laitman: Yes, certainly.

Student: Why does the intention specifically determine it?

M. Laitman: What else could be?

Student: Well, a person did something, he came to the lesson.

M. Laitman: That is like you acting in something in this world. It doesn't change much.

Student: That's why I'm asking, why specifically the intentions determine the results?

M. Laitman: Because they come out from the depth of the heart. From the depth of the heart.

Student: Is the intention more powerful than a person's desire if it comes from the depth, from the bottom of the heart?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: How do you direct your intention to really be the right intention?

M. Laitman: I think that the intention is the most internal thought that the person can bring out of himself and draw it to the Creator.

Student: How do you connect that inner thought? What I'm trying to scrutinize is, to clarify is, how are you really in the intention before you do the actions you do?

M. Laitman: Before the action, I cannot think about the intention. I first emphasize the intention and raise it, and turn it toward the Creator where I only want to fulfill it. And that is all. There is nothing else. If I did that correctly, then certainly I, through my actions, need to come closer to the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (43:00) It sounds like the precision, and the intention, and all these efforts is a person's own personal work. I hone the intention, publish it, direct it. Is this me doing this?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Where are the friends here? There are none.

M. Laitman: There are none because if I want to make a general group action, let's say, so I need in advance to care about the connection between the friends. And only from that can I feel how much I will succeed in that.

Student: How do my friends help me correct, direct my intention toward the Creator?

M. Laitman: Friends can help me raise the importance of the intention. And other than the importance of the intention, I wouldn't say anything else.

Student: In other words, the friends give me importance, I give the friends importance, but the intention is a person's own personal thing.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Okay, another question. There are moments when I'm totally focused on the lesson, and my thought is on the light and on the demand, but there are moments when I totally lose concentration, it suddenly slips away, I don't know where I am, I don't even have foreign thoughts, I'm just not concentrating on what Rav says, on what is written. On what does the intensity of the concentration and a person's attention depend during the lesson?

M. Laitman: The intensity of a person's attention in the study, in the intention in the study, depends all in all only on being connected to the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (46:08) A person who comes to a lesson and cannot maintain the intention, is it correct to say that even the reward for walking, for the effort, he doesn't have it?

M. Laitman: He has a reward for the walking. He did some action with his legs, but the extent to which he was connected to that with his mind and with his heart, that is a question.

Question (PT 31): (46:42) What's the value that a good preparation gives to the lesson itself?

M. Laitman: Height.

Question (PT 27): (46:55) How does the preparation influence the light and allows it to shine?

M. Laitman: The preparation in connection with the friends and with the Creator to be together for all of us, it prepares a place for the Creator so that He will expand among them, that he will spread among them, and connect them together.

Question (Czechoslovakia 4): (48:12) What was Rabash's prayer? What did he pray for? What kind of preparation did he do?

M.Laitman: I cannot say. Because here they ask me about Rabash, about what his prayer was. I have no such data in the heart.

Question (Woman Turkiye 8): (49:09) If the intention while learning Torah is impure, can the study still lift us, or is its influence completely affected by the intention?

M. Laitman: The result of the efforts that we bring out of ourselves, in which we raise, they all are outcomes of the intention. That is all..

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (50:03) We need to direct ourselves to the Creator,

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What's the difference between directing ourselves to the Creator during the lesson, as opposed to directing ourselves to the Creator during the rest of the day?

M. Laitman: What is the difference? The difference is in all those conditions.

Student: So, what actually happens at the lesson?

M. Laitman: The lesson is the lessons according to the topic of the lesson, according to your state, your connection with the friends. Yes, that's how it is.

Student: What does it mean that we had a good lesson?

M. Laitman: A good lesson is that we discovered the topic, we delved deep into it as much as it was possible to, and we tried to process ourselves also in that. And that is how we progressed.

Reader: Rav, there are questions in the world Kli if you'd like.

M. Laitman: Well, yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (52:19) We aim ourselves to be straight to the Creator, right? That's our preparation, our intention, that's the Rosh. So, we connect all the obstructions in the end to Him. All those obstructions, as we learned in the preface, that there is the Rosh, Toch, Sof, and that Sof, that end, is all the obstructions, all the thoughts, everything that appears to us on our daily lives, and we constantly have to connect it to the Rosh, to be straight to the Creator, to be the Rosh of that guidance. So, this is our preparation basically, each time, and all our work that we need to do.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (53:40) The lesson started with the perception of reality depending, being dependent on the importance. I scrutinize to what extent I can descend, and that depends on ìIt depends on those terms that my mind encounters, so I understand I can't continue the work and the Creator has to complement. There's a choice there between powerlessness and importance.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (54:36) I wanted to scrutinize another point regarding the preparation. Should a person come to an equal state with all the friends before he enters the lesson?

M. Laitman: No. No.

Student: To come to some wholeness?

M. Laitman: No. No.

Student: So, if He has a different relation toward each friend?

M. Laitman: Don't engage in that.

Student: Not to engage in that. Even though these gaps actually sometimes awaken him.

M. Laitman: Even so.

Student: To try to be above it all the time.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So what is above?

M. Laitman: I don't know what you're getting to. But your beginning is not good.

Student: Okay. I'll scrutinize it. Thank you.

Reader: There are questions in the WKli, friends from all over the world on the screens on top. Okay.

Question (Woman Turkiye 7): (56:06) Sometimes when a person can't come to the lesson, even if it happens once or twice, on the one hand it disconnects him. On the other hand, it really increases his importance of the goal, the importance of the group. How can we maintain the importance even when we do come to the lesson each and every day?

M. Laitman: Through our discussions. Where we want to scrutinize how important it is. Okay.

Question (Salt Lake City): (57:20) What is the best thing someone can do to prepare his inTention for the connection and his thoughts of connection, especially just waking up in the morning? For me, for example, I feel like a beast in the mornings and I have to fight with myself to think of the connection or even to re-listen to the morning lesson. What's the best thing somebody can do?

M. Laitman: I have no clear advice about his question.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (58:28) You previously said that a good lesson can be measured by how deeply we went into it by ourselves, into ourselves, and how we advanced in it and lost ourselves in this? In the last congress there were three lessons. In the first lesson you said it was very successful. In the second lesson you said that there is some problem. In the third lesson you said that it was a good lesson again.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: My question is, should we too come by ourselves as one collective, one vessel to such discernments like you have, that we got a good lesson, that we worked strongly enough, that we prepared ourselves enough.

M. Laitman: We should try to have a good lesson every lesson. I have nothing more to add.

Student: You think we'll have in the end some vessel of our own in which we'll be able to receive such discernments?

M. Laitman: Without a doubt.

Question (Woman PT 8): (59:51) I heard you said that from all the reasons and things that awaken in him, he tries to get to the shortest relation to the Creator. In our environment, it's easier to connect things to the Creator. When we are in the external society, which is most of the day, it's very difficult. Can a person change his inner environment while he is outside?

M. Laitman: No.

Student: So, what does he do?

M. Laitman: He tries not to exit the connection that we have.

Student: What connection?

M. Laitman: Connection between the friends. Between all the friends. Yes, to be in that.

Student: That's the question. How to maintain inner connection while we are in an external environment?

M. Laitman: We have no words with which to express it, but it's clear that the inner connection holds us.

Question (Kyiv 1): (01:01:18) Today you said that the solution to the obstructions is to be closer to the Creator. So every advice I give regarding appropriation is more connection to the Creator. How do I come to the appropriation and connect myself to the Creator in order to resolve it?

M. Laitman: Only prayer, a request to the Creator.

Student: What should be the prayer so I will really connect to Him?

M. Laitman: Out of prayer with the friends that you all pray to the Creator and ask from Him.
