Middle Line - Selected Excerpts, #25

Rav’s Introduction:

1. The middle line, the middle line is spirituality. It is the Creator. It is attainment. It is everything that we are trying to discover above our own nature. It's more than above our nature. We say there is reason and above reason. As if two opposite things but the middle line is not opposite. The middle line is emerging between opposite things and therefore there is a unique approach to it. How do we prepare this place for the middle line to appear, for the Creator to be revealed and dwell within us? We discussed how love has to cover all crimes, that we have to bring the plus against the minus and vice versa so we understand about two conflicting things that may somehow coexist. But the middle line, that we can't imagine to ourselves as it is said until the third verse comes and appears between them and until it does, we can't imagine what it is. The truth is we can't imagine to ourselves how it is possible that the two verses as they're called, the two forces, the two views, thoughts, desires that are completely opposite to each other can be connected and supportive of each other.

It's very hard for us to understand that even though we learned that all the Partzufim in the wisdom of Kabbalah are built upon that. There we have Aviut, Tzimtzum, Masach and Ohr Hozer and in this reciprocal work between them there is the construction of the Partzuf and the inner light appears in it which is the revelation of the Creator in the created being. We discussed quite a bit about how we don't eliminate the crimes, we don't want them to cancel out each other like the plus and the minus. We want to somehow combine them together.

It's very difficult for us. As it is said that, to Abraham, Isaac will be your seed and you shall sacrifice him your descendant and you shall sacrifice him. How can these two things happen at the same time? We are after all baffled and in a lack of understanding about how it will happen and we want that against our nature of reception we will have an opposite nature of bestowing and we can't combine the two together. It's either this way or that way and that we understand it is possible because just like we receive everything, we could give everything. But to somehow make a connector between them, something that connects them that merges them correctly together, that we can't do.

This bafflement is where we build the place for the appearance of the Creator, that He will be revealed. And if we look for Him closely, all of us together, then we will certainly bring Him closer and obligate Him to appear between us. We need to understand that the middle line does not erase the two lines just as we're willing to be in either the line of reception or the line of bestowal, either in love or in hate, one of the two. Right, we can kind of throw ourselves this way or that way but to be in both lines together, in the right combination so as to discover an ocean that doesn't exist in us called the Creator where both lines come from, that we cannot do.

As much as we try, more and more to see how we can merge the good and bad, light and darkness, both of which exist, and so that both of which will hold each other and support each other and something intermediate will be born between them. This way we will come to a point where we will demand the Creator make room for His revelation and begin to somewhat feel where can He appear, where exactly. Specifically, as we cannot combine two opposite things, and every moment you can escape this way or that way, but what does it mean to keep both of them at a single moment, this I don't know. This is called he who makes peace above will make peace between us. That's exactly the revelation of the Creator and the middle line is actually He himself. We will try to bring this concept closer to us and make such a place between us and thus understand and feel and see this upper force. Let's begin.

R. No, no, I can't answer this. It's a lot more complicated. The ability to go above reason is not the middle line. No. I want to just to hear questions at the moment, maybe I won't be able to get into the answers now, but we'll go into the texts and read a bit more and gradually come closer to this concept.

R. Why? Because in the middle line, the Creator is revealed and it's neither right nor left. It's how these lines build between them a special quality that is above them and related to the Creator, to the soul. Right and left are essentially forces coming from nature and the middle line is above nature.

7. S. (20:14) One thing is to receive but just to agree with the left line existing an awakening as criticism. The other thing is to use this line and as an instrument. How do I come to a point where I start using it that way?

R. It's not necessarily that the left is criticism. The left could also be that I want to overcome with my forces. That's something we still need to clarify.

8. S. (20:52) Is really the faith in the Creator, faith above reason, faith that the middle line exists and then finally when we discover that we can only be in one state or the other and it's impossible? The final faith that only the Creator can help us.

R. You said that correctly. That the third line needs to come from above. We have no possibility to build the middle line, the third line, but only to make the conditions for it to appear.

9. S. (21:42) When the middle line is already built, can you say that in every small element of one line inside the middle line, there is the element of the other line as well? Are they kind of mixed that way?

R. No, no, let's wait with that, I'm not getting into this. This is only going to cause greater confusion. Alright, so we are just going through these quotes. Perhaps we even go into an article from Baal HaSulam or Rabash where he explains the middle line, the two lines and how they build the condition for the revelation of the middle line, we'll see.

R. No, that's what you think that there is. No. A person does not eat himself up. He's eating himself up if he's not doing anything but if he awakens criticism and that criticism helps him balance the left and right and find the right place for the middle line, then he's not eating himself up. On the contrary he's building. He's building.

22. S. (48:19) How do we help each other make the scrutiny in two lines?

R. Most importantly, is that we want to try to support each other together. It doesn't matter in what ways because truly we don't understand, in what states we're in. The fact that we want to support each other so that all of us together will attain the spiritual state. That is sufficient, because the spiritual state, we ultimately attain it through more or less some common illumination between us. Therefore, the more we support each other in that, care for each other, even concede the personal attainment for the sake of the friends, accordingly we advance.

23. S. (49:29) Are we supposed to engage with each other by covering the left or we can connect through the right or left state, any of them?

R. We don't need to cover the left. We don't need to escape any state. We need to find as much as possible and grow these two states that deny each other and as we see that we are truly in both this and that and they are in a true collision and they sting us from both sides and we don't know how to combine the two, then comes what's called the third verse that comes and connects. This is called he who makes peace above makes peace between us. Peace is completion.

24. S. (50:43) How does the state of unconditional surrender relate to the right and the middle line?

R. We want to advance toward an unconditional submission. It's not that we don't have a goal. We want to advance in bestowing through the group to the Creator and it doesn't matter in what way and in what states. This is what's called through unconditional surrender, that we accept the work regardless of what conditions we are given.

25. S. (51:37) One of the first texts that we read of Baal HaSulam, he says that there's work in the left and the right but before that there was only one line. What does that mean that the line existed before there were the left and the right?

R. One line means I have a simple will to receive and I have to, bestowing to the friends, to the Creator, that's how I imagine myself. It's like a kid at school who wants to overcome his laziness and he just wants to play and do something else, but he has to sit down and study and resist his will to receive. This is called one line. These things are clear to us in this world. Two lines however, that we already can't, they deny each other. If we are in bestowal or if we are in reception, we can't combine the two. That's how it is.

26. S. (53:05) Also the exercise that you gave us and also the more we learn about the middle line, I find that the imagination has great importance and I wanted to know, what is the connection between imagination and faith above reason?

R. I don't think there's a connection. It helps advancing but afterwards when we, until we actually accept faith above reason, the middle line that settles in us and we then truly receive an impression from the vessels of bestowal, before that we don't know what it is. After that we can already use it. We have to do all kinds of efforts and that we don't even know exactly what they are, and they bring us the revelation of the middle line. The middle line includes all the discernments within it and then it will be clear to us how spirituality can appear in us. Spirituality cannot reside in our qualities because we are opposite. It's not even opposite. We just have nothing of spirituality, so we build by our efforts such a state that, yes we are able to receive a very unique inner design called the middle line and there we discover the upper world, the Creator, all of spirituality in short.

27. S. (55:12) Can we say myself is the left line and right line is my ten? And we need to connect together to the middle line?

R. No, no. We only started discussing today a little bit of what's called the middle line. We're going to get deeper and deeper into it gradually. It will be unclear to us. We will have disappointments and lack of understanding until it becomes more and more stable and appear to us. It's very important to think about it together.

28. S. (56:08) Why is the father called whiteness and the mother called redness?

R. That's according to the vessels. Father is vessels of bestowal. Mother is vessels of reception. That's how it's called. Odem is vessels of reception, its Ima, Adom, red and Dam, blood. Loven, whiteness, means father, Abba.

29. S. (56:55) When you say it we will understand much better. I have this question now, does it mean that we should prepare for the descent when we're in an ascent, does that mean to work in two lines?

R. Well let's say that this is so. This can also be.

30. S. (57:27) How do we connect these two lines to each other and which line is straight?

R. We cannot connect the two lines because they are opposites and we don't have the power or understanding or ability, not in our mind, not in our emotion, not in our inner vessels to connect these two lines. It is written that the third, the middle line comes and connects these two lines and makes peace between them as it's called, completion between them. That generates the feeling of the Creator within us so who is the Creator? Not before that.

31. S. (58:28) Why are we not thankful to the Creator when we are in the last state? What should be the true approach to that state?

R. It is said, one must bless for the bad as he blesses for the good. Why aren't we thankful for the left? We should be thankful for the left as well. The left means the revelation of the vessels of reception, without which we won't be ready to receive in order to bestow. We have to always grow. One who is greater than his friend, his inclination is greater than himself. We need to be thankful for the left as well. A person should be thankful for each and every state because every moment that goes through, we want, or no, we understand or no, we always are advancing towards the final correction. Each and everyone, even those who don't engage in Kabbalah at all, everyone is getting closer, each and every moment, to the point that there is a big, sum total so to speak.

32. S. (59:58) Rabash writes when a person comes to after working in two lines it feels...?

R. No I can't hear you. I asked all of you and I warned you, fix your microphones.

33. S. (01:01:03) Is it just the prayer that allows the Creator to make peace between the two lines?

R. Yes, eventually it's only through the prayer, the address to the Creator, we attain it all. In every given state, we need to know how to compose the prayer, how we address Him, how we ask, how we arrange ourselves in the connection between us, say the middle line, the third line. We need to be ready in the two lines and then comes the middle line.

34. S. (01:01:55) At first, you told us that we need to answer the question, what is reception in order to bestow? If I understand correctly, it's actually the connection between the two opposites but in the state a bit closer to us, bestowing in order to receive, is that also some connection between the opposites?

R. Yes, you could say so.

35. S. (01:02:29) ....

R. The middle line is the revelation of the Creator within the ready vessels, right and left within the creature. That's why we can't talk about the middle line prior to the Creator appearing.

36. S. (01:03:08) In excerpt number 27 it says that a person determines a judge to himself, what is that?

R. That's when a person scrutinizes his work and realizes he's not in the bestowal, and he builds his left line by that.

37. S. (01:03:46) Please say, what is the right prayer to the Creator in the work?

R. It's one that emerges from the depth of the heart when you want to arrange your entire attitude towards creation, the Creator, the friends, from the right, from the left, all the things, where you're trying to connect them all together and from that point turn to the Creator. That's called, from the depth of your heart.

38. S. (01:04:26) We have two small questions. First, what does it mean, the intention of bestowal? The second, the middle line consists only of intentions?

R. I can't tell you anything about the middle line until it will be revealed and then you will understand what it is. The first question is in relation to how did you say it?

S. What does it mean, the intention of bestowal?

R. The intention of bestowal is that I, no matter what action, whether it's reception or giving, I intend for the benefit of the other side. That's called the intention in order to bestow. Let's say, it could be that I am sitting at my host and I receive from the host, that could be reception. It could be that I'm sitting at the host and I receive from the host and that will be bestowal. It all depends on my attitude towards that which I'm doing, towards the host. That's why the intention is an internal thing that you cannot know about on the outside. Therefore, the entire method of the wisdom of Kabbalah which teaches us the intention, how to receive an order to bestow, is called the wisdom of the concealed because we cannot reveal the intentions. They will always be concealed.

39. S. (01:06:37) When I read these excerpts again, when we read them together in the ten’s meeting during the day, can it bring us closer to the state that we are talking about or these are still very lofty concepts?

R. It's a very complex, very sublime topic, very spiritual, that which we're learning right now. I don't expect us to immediately, now, understand them, feel them and start working with them but rather slowly, slowly we will hear it another day, another two days, I don't know how long and this way we will kind of cascade or move towards our convention and after that, also continue on this topic. This is the topic, as actually, in it, we actually come to the implementation of the vessels: right, left, middle and so on, meaning we have come to a state in which, let's start to try opening it up as much as is possible and when we can. We will try. We will knock on the door and then the Creator will slowly slowly open up for us. Okay?

40. S. (01:08:23) Can we say that both the right line and the left line only exist in order to find the middle line?

R. Right, certainly you are right.

S. Another question, what to do with the tendency to try to put these lines together by ourselves?

R. We will go a little deeper in this and we will feel how contradictory they are and it can be either in one line or the other but to be in both of them together, it’s impossible. For that we need to have help, a special force from above. As only in the Creator you can combine the two. Eventually, that's not right now, immediately but that's how you'll see it that you want to combine the two of them together and it is impossible. That's called, He who makes peace in the heavens, makes peace upon us. Only the presence of the Creator gives us the possibility of combining left and right together. In one inclination, one action, one goal.

41. S. (01:09:48) I have two questions. One, how, concretely can we awaken the middle line in the ten, despite the tendency to criticize? Second question, to do it in the ten do you have to do it with ten or two people at least?

R. I don't have answers, not for the first question, nor the second one you see this will start clarifying as we start working on this, we have to start engaging in the two lines, to be in this and that and to see how we can and what to do with them until the place for the middle line will be revealed, a need for the middle line and then we will see but it's not that we start now to combine the lines and do things with them. S. It is that we just don't have any vessels, completely?

R. Repeat please.

S. So we just don't have any vessels, we need a new vessel in order to feel a new light?

R. Right, correct, it's true.

43. S. (01:13:16) Do we need to work in the right line as if there's no Creator? We're trying to connect and do we discover that we can't?

R. You need to work in what in what is possible both in the left and in the right and Rabash writes how much you need to be in the right and how much you need to be in the left, half an hour a day in the left under the condition that you're 23 and a half hours a day in the right and all kinds of such things. 45. S. (01:15:59) Is the middle line the meeting between the created being asking for the correction of intention and the Creator helping him?

R. No, I can't tell you what the middle line is. When it will appear, you will feel it. For the time being, there are no words for it. It combines the two lines. It makes a connection between them. It brings peace and wholeness. These are all the words we will expect to come and then it will be revealed.

46. S. (01:16:36) You mentioned that first we have to reach a state of bafflement. What is that state?

R. It is a state where we are not capable, not certain how to say it, there are several different manners in it. When you get there, you get there, when you don't, you don't, I can't say. We can't talk about feelings. It is each of us. When you discover it, you will discover it. We read many excerpts from Rabash, you can go over them again, you can look where else and find the writings about the middle line also in the Zohar and other places. We will learn this and also tomorrow and the next day, other than that on the weekend we have the convention which is an exception to the rule, but this topic the middle line will have to be truly things that will accompany us for a very long time. Read, study, examine, check, every single ten should do homework on all of the writings and we will read them tomorrow to each other, what we found.
