Part 1:
Rabash. Article No. 7, (1991). What Is “Man” and What Is “Beast” in the Work?
1. S. (36:12) Before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, I want to ask for forgiveness and apologize to a great friend of mine that I hurt. I hurt him before the entire world Kli and a few other friends along the way because of my own problems. That's only now after 36 years I'm starting to understand and I'm sure they'll see it soon, so nothing was intentional, especially with you Rav. Please continue with the lesson. I'm sorry for my disturbance.
R. Okay.
2. S. (37:22) He writes here a condition that when all the sparks assemble that a person has to scrutinize and ask for them that they enter holiness then he receives all the help at once. What is that condition only when you want to scrutinize all of the sparks?
R. It is in fact a condition, the prayer needs to be complete, and until a person goes through all of his prayers, his requests, and raises them to the Creator that can take a lot of time and effort. That's why he mustn't despair but continue in the same direction, and that's how it is.
3. S. (38:54) In our work, do we come to the sensation of the sorrow of the Creator for not being able to fully bestow to the created being? If so, how does this sensation affect our desire to provide the Kli into which the Creator can fully bestow?
R. That's not in one go, it's in many attempts, and thoughts, and prayers until a person begins to feel how he has the correct approach built up in him and then he succeeds.
4. S. (39:53) It's written they asked the Creator to give them the strength to overcome through faith above reason and greatness of the Creator and they don't want the Creator to let them attain it. What is it that I ask for the greatness of the Creator, but I also ask for Him to not let me attain it?
R. That it will be not within reason but above reason. That's what they're asking.
S. We feel the greatness of the Creator. What is it? It's not attainment, so what is it?
R. No, they only want to feel the greatness of the Creator, but not that they want to see it, to attain it, but only to have the strength above reason to continue working for the Creator.
S. How to restrict oneself? You are receiving this confirmation that you have the strength for the work or pleasure for the work. How to restrict oneself from that and hold on to the greatness of the Creator and not to all these other things?
R. If a person has a feeling that he enjoys the work, he needs to try to transition himself to lines of connection with the Creator in such a way that he feels good that he is bestowing upon the Creator, and that by that, he gives the Creator pleasure. Otherwise, he'll receive it for himself.
5. S. (42:20) What does it mean to be a man in the eyes of the Creator? How do we reach that state?
R. To be Adam, speaker, in the eyes of the Creator is one who wants to become similar to the Creator. The word Adam in Hebrew is from the word Domeh, similar. That's what we need to try to become closer to that term, to become similar to the Creator. That's why our goal is called Adam, Domeh, meaning similar.
6. S. (43:05) Where should we grow stronger and put in our efforts?
R. We should in the connection between us turn to the Creator.
7. S. (43:28) Why is the revelation of the world conditioned on the degree of a person until he rises? Are there certain buds that are seen in the land?
R. The spiritual world opens up only to a person who yearns to resemble the Creator, and to the extent that he resembles himself to the Creator, to that extent, he attains spirituality, and he becomes Adam, speaking.
S. The fact the whole world is created for a person. Without a person, there’s no need for it?
R. No, there's no point in building a world if there wouldn't be people who want to attain the Creator.
8. S. (44:36) At the end of the article, he says that he should not tell his wife his will to receive, but tell everything to the Creator. What does it mean in the ten? It’s not clear what is that place to tell the Creator.
R. Through connection with the friends, he can turn to the Creator, and in such a way, he needs to raise his desires and his passions.
9. S. (45:18) The more we advance in the work, will we receive the gift of being poorer and poorer, meaning we’ll continually discover that we are lacking more reason?
R. Yes, that is right. That is true. The one who adds knowledge adds pain.
10. S. (45:52) I understand from the article that the Creator gives this gift only to those He loves. What should we do so that the Creator will love us and give us the true feeling of self?
R. We attract from the Creator the attitude towards us, we need to come closer to Him. That’s all.
11. S. (46:29) When I taste the taste of dust, how to hide this feeling from the will to receive and bring it back to the Creator?
R. If you taste this taste of the dust, why give it back to the Creator? I don't understand.
S. How to conceal this feeling from the will to receive?
R. To conceal this feeling from the will to receive and?
S. Return the feeling to the Creator from whom the feeling came?
R. That is what you need to do. Exactly like you said.
12. S. (47:34) I heard that we should not despair but rather continue in the same direction. In the article, it says that the person reveals himself poorer and poorer. Poor in knowledge, poor in deeds. His will to receive is not able to tolerate the idea of bestowal. What does it mean to continue in the same direction? The same direction is greater than beastliness?
R. No, he means that when a person sees obstacles along the path, it does not deviate him from the path. He always finds strength in it, in the environment, to continue.
S. To continue in what?
R. To continue coming closer to the Creator. To pray to Him, to ask Him, to pray in order for Him to help him.
S. Helping because he sees he’s opposite and opposite, and opposite?
R. Yes.
S. What is the help?
R. The help is that the Creator will give him the strength to bestow, and through this balancing of forces between him and the Creator, he will come closer to the Creator.
S. Until he gets such power, he will reveal himself as opposite, and opposite, and opposite?
R. Yes.
S. What does it mean to continue in the same direction not to despair but to continue in the same direction?
R. To keep asking no matter what, to keep asking.
13. S. (49:22) He says that to be a man means that all his actions will be for the sake of Heaven. Does it mean that all his will to receive is in equivalence of form?
R. Adam in Hebrew is from the word Domeh, similar to Creator, the speaker. That is what he must reach.
S. When he sees until he corrects the sin of the three of knowledge, he tastes the taste of dust. What does it mean to correct the sin of the Tree of Knowledge?
R. The sin of the tree of knowledge is that he wants to receive in the vessels of reception within reason and that can only be corrected if he rises above reason.
S. To go above reason means that a person stops tasting dust?
R. No, that doesn't belong, that is not related. He might keep on feeling it but he does not want to be bought.
S. When exactly is divinity rising from the dust and what does that depend on?
R. When a person begins to be entirely bestowing upon the Creator.
14. S. (51:00) Can we describe the state, that from a state of emptiness, a person comes out to above reason?
R. I did not understand. From the emptiness that a person goes out above reason. I can imagine, yes.
S. He writes that the matter of emptiness can be in a place where there's no presence and he feels himself empty from Torah. To continue Rabash writes how there is nothing for the benefit of the Creator and everything is only for his own benefit, and in that state, he feels he has nothing. He feels empty, and he can fill that only with a pomegranate, meaning going above reason, called exaltedness of the Creator. Meaning completely opposite?
R. Completely opposite, you’re right.
S. Meaning the lowliest person is suddenly asked to do the most exalted thing?
R. Right.
S. How?
R. We will reach it and we will see, but really, that’s how it is. You are right, but from these states, the lowest hopeless states, from them, you can rise.
15. S. (52:56) Where does one get the power to advance? What is the engine?
R. The engine of advancement is by me, that I have to reach adhesion with Him.
S. How can I think of adhesion with Him if all He does is make me feel poor and gives me the taste of dust?
R. Then, I understand that is all in order for me to attain Him.
S. That’s what’s not clear – how from the place where you feel the taste of dust, the Creator gives you this gift and you feel you are poor and you're not even thinking about the fulfillment. You only think of Him. There is a substantial leap here.
R. Yes. We need to gather our forces and adhere to the group and demand. The main thing is that it all comes from the prayer.
S. I don't understand. How can there be a prayer from the bottom of the heart if the heart is broken?
R. Specifically from the broken heart.
S. I understand, but in nature, you are looking for fulfillment. Something is lacking, is missing. You feel yourself poor and you want fulfillment. You’re tasting dust and you don’t want to taste dust. How can we have true prayer if your entire desire is about receiving fulfillment?
R. I cannot explain, I cannot explain. We need to reach a state where, other than adhesion to the Creator, we do not want anything. We do not want anything in return. That is it. Where does it come from? Of course, from above. It is not born in a person, but a person only feels the result.
S. Nothing is in our control. Most of the desire to adhere to the Creator comes from above.
R. Right.
S. Which is out of my control. How to accelerate this process?
R. By doing everything that you can do, everything that you can do. Everything that’s in your ability to do, you should do.
16. S. (57:15) He writes at the very beginning that a person has to invest all of his powers in order to obtain the will to bestow. Also, he understands that he has to invest all of his powers, and he sees that the will to receive does not let him agree to it. He doesn't want to deliver all of himself to this. How do you overcome this?
R. You advance as much as possible. Advance as much as possible. We connect with the friends, we raise prayer, we do all kinds of actions. Anything in your ability to do, do.
S. The feeling that you cannot deliver your entirety remains and it becomes an additional deficiency for adhesion. The lack of feeling in my ability to deliver myself is also a constant prayer in the heart?
R. Yes, and that gives you an additional adhesion.
17. S. (57:29) I understood in the lesson that the beast is a person whose point heart has not developed yet.
R. Let's say yes.
18. S. (57:47) I have been studying Kabbalah for many years. I don't feel that I have any feelings towards the Creator. Does this mean I'm still in the state of the beast?
R. Possibly. The question is, the examination is a person adhering to the group, and by that, he can check and see where he is.
19. S. (58:13) What is the difference between spiritual fear on a level of the animal and spiritual fear on the level of Adam, the fear of the Creator?
R. One more time.
S. What is the difference between the fear on the animate level and the spiritual fear from the Creator?
R. That is the cause. Either he is concerned for himself and his own existence, or he is concerned about bestowing to the Creator. That is the difference.
20. S. (58:57) Those people who are not on the path towards bestowal, are not told the truth how they are unable to walk against the nature of the will to receive. A person could be on the path for years and doesn’t know that he cannot go on the path of bestowal. How can a person check if he thinks about going on the path of bestowal or does he cheats himself? What to do when he discovers that he does not have the intention to bestow?
R. He needs, as much as possible, with everything, in every state that he is in to try and adhere to the friends and to raise his deficiency to the Creator.
21. S. (59:46) I heard you say that the person has to ask, constantly ask. This is an unstoppable feeling of resistance to the Creator. Why should we always be in resistance before the Creator?
R. To resist and to ask is not the same thing. Why is he confusing these two things? When I ask something from the Creator, it does not mean that I am the opposite of Him. On the contrary, it is possible that I want to adhere to Him.
22. S. (01:00:26) He writes at the end of the article that a person should not tell the will to receive. How can you say it? The will to receive is the first to feel a person’s state. How am I not to tell it anything?
R. The person will not be tied to the will to receive. That he will be in his will to bestow, that he will turn to the Creator, that he will adhere to the friends. What opportunities and possibilities does a person have?
23. S. (01:01:01) How from that lowly state can a person ask for the greatness of the Creator and not for his own fulfillment?
R. Specifically when I am lowly, thrown aside, really outside of any of the society, there specifically, in such states, I can ask. I can ask the Creator to raise me, to connect me to a higher degree.
S. How to ask the Creator to raise me to His degree and not to give me this fulfillment, this calmness, this instinctive reaction to get my beastly emptiness fulfilled?
R. From the depths, I have called out to the Creator. That’s what I need to do, to the same depths that the Creator puts me into. From there, specifically, I cry out to him.
S. What does it mean that the person only feels results and outcomes?
R. I don't know who I said that to, but usually a person feels only the result of his action.
S. His own actions or the actions of the Creator on him?
R. The actions of the Creator.
24. S. (01:02:42) I heard that a person should not connect to his will to receive. He should not connect his will to receive. The whole article explains that you are a donkey and beast and you have only the will to receive and you cannot absorb anything from the idea of bestowal.
R. Don’t connect to it. Try to be connected to the Creator through your will to bestow as if the Creator will give it to you, and through that desire, you will be connected to Him.
25. S. (01:03:28) What is that string of Hesed over a person's head? How can a person obtain this string of Hesed to go above reason?
R. That a person does not lose hope that the Creator treats him with Hasidim and he needs to awaken in the Creator these Hasidim.
S. But what can a person do to acquire that desire of Hesed? What can I do? I cannot go above reason without it.
R. Right, so what you need is to connect with the friends, with the connection with them together, and to build the quality of Hesed that will tie, that will connect, the both of you and then with that quality, you reach out to the Creator.
S. What is the quality of Hesed?
R. That you ask for Hasidim.
S. What is Hasidim?
R. Hasidim is that you want the Creator to help you in any state you are in.
S. What is Hesed that I am asking about?
R. Yes, that is the upper Hesed, mercy.
26. S. (01:05:03) He writes here that the Creator sent him the gifts because He loves him. Why does the Creator love him? Because he wants to work for the sake of the Creator. That is why the Creator loves him. Rather, even if he wants he cannot do it because it is against nature. There is a state here where he describes a created being that wants to bestow to the Creator one hand, but on the other hand, the body does not let him. The question is if you discover along the way that you didn't even have the will to bestow, even the will of bestowal you don't have, meaning even having the desire for it, meaning it's a gift from above. It's such a degree where he describes it as if he has a will to bestow, but he can't.
R. There is no desire to bestow. He asks to have it.
S. Where is he asking from? If he is fully immersed in his nature what is that point that allows him to ask for something that is against your nature?
R. Still he asks what is called the point in the heart that a person is given. The foundations of the spiritual Kli and from there onward he can keep developing.
27. S. (01:06:53) You say often not to escape the campaign. What is that campaign?
R. The campaign is the same path that we need to go through from the beginning of our spiritual work until the end of it.
S. Why would a person want to escape the campaign if he decided that he does not want to escape there's nowhere to escape to.
R. He decided. A person can decide whatever he wants, but the desire that is clothed in him is what really determines it and not the person himself.
28. S. (01:07:37) There are states in which a person remains clueless and all the knowledge disappears and he remains with the pain. What to do with those states?
R. Sit down and cry. If he has nothing left. I would say that he needs to connect it to the environment, to the ten, and together to see how he can raise himself.
29. S. (01:08:16) What is the thing that holds the prayer back from being received?
R. The most incorrect prayer, let's say, is the prayer that a person asks the Creator something for his will to receive if I understood correctly what he's asking.
S. What characterizes the prayer that is received?
R. That is the correct prayer. That comes from the internality of the person to the Creator.
30. S. (01:09:23) I heard before the person does not lose hope when the Creator relates to him with Hasidim. I hope I heard correctly, a person does not lose hope when a Creator relates to him with Hasidim even if it seems different to him. I want to ask if this is actually the fuel that when a person understands that when the Creator awakens in him, he awakens it from the Hasidim, from the desire to bring him closer. He's asking from Lo Lishma, he's asking to feel this Hasidim that is good and something happens there along the way. The intention changes the light changes.
R. Yes. The main thing is not to let go, even if a person goes in the wrong path and so on, it does not matter. Most important is that he does not let go, everything but leave.
31. S. (01:10:31) How can I fill the emptiness with exaltedness?
R. You try and depict the Creator above all other discernments that you can imagine.
S. But it is as if I'm speaking to my will to receive, I'm trying to convince it?
R. Yes.
S. But you said not to talk to the will to receive during the work.
R. Try and depict the Creator as the great, the sublime, the exalted, above anything you can imagine in all of the worlds, in this world and the next world.
S. When Kabbalists say that you have to work only for the sake of heaven, something after years of study, it seeps down as I want it, but I also know that there's a lie there. What does it mean to actually want to do for the sake of heaven?
R. If you pass on the sentence through the ten, then you'll see whether you're in that direction or not.
32. S. (01:12:09) Is it worthwhile to split things in the fact that I'm a beast more and more? This should not despair me because the ten is more and more in bestowal and love and is going up, so is it okay that the split is not inside of me? That inside of me the will to receive that just immerses me in the beastliness and it doesn't bother me the desire to bestow that awakens. I don't see it awaken, but I see that it exists in the friends. Is it correct to ascribe myself to the will to bestow that is revealed in the friends more?
R. Yes, it doesn't matter, so you don't see.
S. Is it okay that I lean on them?
R. Yes, yes.
33. S. (01:13:05) What is the true deficiency for the quality of bestowal, the deficiency that the Creator answers, is this the feeling of poverty and feeling distance from the Creator, or is this something else?
R. That is the deficiency for bestowal.
S. It's not that I feel poor and distant.
R. You can say whatever you want. I will say it again. It is a deficiency for bestowal.
34. S. (01:14:03) When is the truth given to the person that he is a shallow person in the shell?
R. I did not understand.
S. When a person is told that he is in the Klipa, in the shell, is it truth?
R. Yes. I guess there is such a state that a person feels that he is in a Klipa and that it is a true state and that this knowledge, this message, came to him from above.
35. S. (01:15:09) What does it mean for the sake of the Creator? If we take a concrete example in the morning lesson my intention is to go to the lesson for the sake of the Creator, meaning to strengthen the connection with the friends in the vessel to build a general vessel is that right?
R. Yes.
S. When we incorporate with everyone we can’t forget about the Creator we increase his greatness.
R. Yes.
36. S. (01:15:51) A while ago you explained to us that there are only two states. The first is that I only take care of my existence. The second is when I take care of how to bestow to the Creator. Please can you explain this meaning deeply because we have to live in both ways?
R. I cannot explain the inner meaning. no one can explain it, a person has to feel it himself.
37. S. (01:16:30) Rabash once asked the question, where is the pharmacy where I can get a prescription for a desire for spirituality? I'm asking where is there a store where I can buy the fear of heaven?
R. It might be in the same store. It might be.
38. S. (01:17:06) Everything I have in life is the will to receive and according to that I do things in life I can't put my hand in the fire and so on. How can I work without relating myself to him the quality of bestowal and the direction towards the Creator, there's no feeling in that. How can you try to be outside of your own desire without leaning on my will to receive to even do anything? Until you don't feel the true reality?
R. This feeling will come and we need only to try to exert, to locate it, to detect it, and this is what I can say. Bit by bit, by bit, it acquires more and more the feeling of connection.
39. S. (01:18:38) One of your answers before won’t let me rest. You said that man even if he does not discover the tendency to bestow in him, but he sees that others have it it is okay that he falls on it that others have it. That is enough?
R. Yes.
S. Sounds like just to give a person rest from searching?
R. No, no, no.
S. What is that work?
R. It is work that if the Creator gives to others, he is happy with it, and he feels as though he received himself.
S. What is man's exertion day to day? What should his tendency be? Where does he give his effort? His heart, how does he activate it?
R. The Creator tends to others.
S. What approach do I need to pray that my heart will agree that the Creator will give to the other?
R. Yes.
40. S. (01:20:00) What does it mean that man is now man, and what does it mean that he is now a beast?
R. A beast means that he's thinking about himself and can't think otherwise, and man is when he thinks about humanity, about others, and from them to the Creator.
S. Is there something in between?
R. Between them, there isn't.
S. Is the transition really sharp?
R. Yes.
41. S. (01:20:44 ) He writes that for that reason a person should be careful not to run from the work because he sees that he asked the Creator many times for help and he did not see a result. How should the plea be for it in order to work?
R. I cannot say. There has to be such a request that it already contains within it the despair, disillusionment, whatnot, that a person basically went through the whole path he should go through, and nevertheless, he cannot quit the path, so he turns to the Creator and begs.
S. You said once that Rabash told you, why didn’t you ask?
R. Yes.
S. Why is it so hard to ask?
R. Because a person has to submit himself by that and make himself a zero, a real zero by that, and it is difficult.
S. I saw these states in the ten where someone is in the real state of helplessness and then there is that request that comes naturally. He doesn't say now I have to ask, it comes naturally and then we see how something itself, something happens, it solves it. How can we bring ourselves to a state to that frequency of request from hopelessness, how can we reach such a state that you actually ask from it?
R. Helplessness is a state where I can no longer relate to myself, I already do not care what response I will get from the Creator, and then out of this comes the real prayer.
S. To just understand, the more we advance, let's say a Kabbalist is one who has already advanced, so he can always be in a state of helplessness?
R. No, it's impossible all the time, but sometimes he jumps into such a state or he's taken into it and he can't think or feel this way.
