How and Where Does a True Sense of Security in Life Come From?
For many people, happiness means feeling loved, accepted, and above all, secure. Security is our positive picture of the future. When such a picture exists before us, we have something to live for. The future is so important that it can illuminate everything happening in the present, or darken it.
We make enormous efforts to secure ourselves with insurance, pensions, savings, investments, property, and countless other protections. Yet despite all of this, it is difficult to find truly calm and secure people. Even family ties, which once provided a natural source of support, have weakened. Modern people increasingly feel alone in facing life.
As children, we experienced security differently. When we felt the warmth of our mother and the strength of our father, we were free to play, experiment, and grow. We knew that whatever happened, they were there for us. Their love gave us confidence in life.
Today, the world is increasingly unstable and interconnected. Everything changes rapidly, and everyone influences and depends upon everyone else. We are discovering that humanity is sitting in one boat. Under such conditions, individual security becomes impossible without mutual responsibility.
This insecurity is therefore pushing us toward a new form of connection. Just as the different organs of a healthy body complement and support one another, we must learn to build relationships in which our differences remain, while above them we create mutual support and connection.
This is integral connection. On one level, we remain different in our opinions, desires, personalities, and tendencies. Above those differences, however, we consciously build good, complementary relationships. With every interaction, we try to add warmth to the connection between us.
When people participate in building such a society, something remarkable happens. Each person can contribute some time, ability, knowledge, or care to the community. These actions might solve practical problems, but their deeper value is that they connect us.
Gradually, a person begins to feel surrounded by a supportive human environment, something resembling the warmth and security we once received from our parents. This gives us the confidence to develop, create, and face life's uncertainties without feeling alone.
True security cannot ultimately be purchased or accumulated. It is created between people. The deepest sense of security, and with it, genuine happiness, is found in the connection between our hearts.
