Temple Mount Post

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister, Riyad al-Maliki, said yesterday that the campaign on Temple Mount “is not about metal detectors and cameras, but the sovereignty over Al--Aqsa: the battle over Jerusalem has begun.”

Al-Maliki reflects the feelings of the entire Arab world. For decades, they have failed to unite in their struggle against Israel. Now, finally, they are succeeding, and the whole world supports them.

But it’s not their struggle that’s given the victory. It’s our own division that fuels their zeal. We shouldn’t fool ourselves to think that today’s relative calm after the prayer is the end of the campaign. It’s only a pause.

The Arabs aren’t alone in their struggle. They whole world supports them. UNESCO’s absurd declaration that Temple Mount has no Jewish history, and that the Cave of the Patriarchs is also Palestinian heritage, expose the world’s honest opinion about our right to live here as sovereign.

2,000 years ago, we lost this land because we hated each other so much that we fought against each other inside the city of Jerusalem while the Romans waited patiently outside the walls. By the time they marched inside, they only had to destroy the relics of our people that were still alive.

We established our nationhood on the basis of unity, of being “as one man with one heart,” and on the commitment to be “a light unto nations,” to spread that exceptional unity throughout the world. For 2,000 years, we have been untrue to our vocation. For 2,000 years, the world has persecuted and exterminated us.

If we want to be sovereign in the land of Israel, we must re-earn it in the same way that our ancestors earned it: by overcoming our hatred and alienation to the point where we unite as one.

George Mallory, the first Brit to climb Mt. Everest, answered the question, “Why did you want to climb Mount Everest?” with the retort “Because it's there.” Mt. Sinai [from the Hebrew word sina’a (hatred)] is the mountain of hatred between us, Jews. Just like the Everest, the hatred between us is there so we will unite above it, and thereby become “a light unto nations.”

Only in this way we will justify our being here. We do not have a Jewish state in order to be like the rest of the nations. We have it because it allows us to be what we are meant to be: a beacon of unity unto nations. If we execute this vocation and unite above our mutual hatred, then we will merit our sovereignty. If we do not, we will be driven out.
