Why the “Grandmas Instead of Psychiatrists” Project in Zimbabwe Is So Successful

Grandmothers in Zimbabwe have been working as community health workers, due to a lack of psychiatrists, giving rise to a new project called "Grandmas Instead of Psychiatrists." Communities are trained to help those with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, to support, embrace and encourage them. The project was incredibly successful, resulting in a decline of depression and suicide levels. There seems to be a miraculous force at play here. In the wisdom of Kabbalah, we learn about the force of love and how to participate in coming closer to each other through our connection—as if in a warm embrace. A person needs nothing besides this, it includes the upper force, which contains the greatest remedy. We often feel a sense of calm around elderly people, which envelops us with a sense of confidence. It comes from the wisdom they have accumulated in life and their love for the younger generation. It helps guide us toward the upper force, such that we acquire the approach and attitude of the elders, as if receiving an illumination from above, from the Creator, the upper force, the general nature. We feel how nature, the positive forces, come to us through our grandparents, like a device that connects to the force of good and creation.
