Part 1: Baal HaSulam. The Arvut (Mutual Guarantee). #25.

Reader: Hello, we are reading from the writings of Baal HaSulam, the article “The Arvut”. You can find it in the writings of Baal HaSulam and also in Sviva Tova and the Arvut system. We are in item 25 in the article “The Arvut”, from Baal HaSulam, and in Sviva Tova, you can find it on the Arvut system and Sviva Tova. “The Arvut”.

The Arvut [Mutual Guarantee], Item 25

Reading: (00:37) Now there remains to complete what we have said in the previous article, “Matan Torah,” Item 16, about the reason that the Torah was not given to the fathers, since the Mitzva, “Love your friend as yourself,” the axis of the whole Torah and around which all the Mitzvot revolve, so as to clarify and interpret it, cannot be observed by an individual, but only through the prior consent of an entire nation.

This is why it took until they came out of Egypt to become worthy of observing it, when they were first asked if each and every one in the nation agreed to take that Mitzva upon himself. And once they agreed to it, they were given the Torah. However, there still remains to clarify where we find in the Torah that the children of Israel were asked that question, and that they agreed to it prior to receiving the Torah.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (02:35) What is the agreement to receive the Torah? What is to agree to receive the Torah?

M. Laitman: To receive the Torah means that this entire great group that is now standing before the Creator, agrees to receive and to observe all the laws that the Creator wishes to reveal to them.

Student: It seems like the whole preparation is for them to want it, it's a desire to agree. It sounds like you're offering something, you have to decide - I want, I don't want.

M. Laitman: Yes, and here they are in fact ready, they want with all their might to cause the Torah to spread among everyone.

Student: When a person receives the Torah, does he know what he's about to receive, or is it from his state, he says, there's no choice, I have to receive whatever You will agree to give me?

M. Laitman: The Creator brings them to a state where they do want to receive the Torah, and the Torah spreads among them.

Student: Why do they agree?

M. Laitman: I think that it's happening because they have such a connection, such a physical connection that they must hide their inner inclinations.

Student: So, the bodily connection is the reason?

M. Laitman: No, that what they had was a physical or bodily connection and when they wish to rise above it, that's already a spiritual connection.

Student: Meaning, that the bodily connection is not sufficient, they want something beyond that?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Why? What's missing?

M. Laitman: What's missing in the physical or bodily connection is to attain that unity where anyone can join everyone, and in this way reach a state, a state of Arvut.

Student: If so, they really want a spiritual connection?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Here he uses the word “agree”, meaning they're offered to all the nations. When it comes to them, they say: “Okay”, they agree. It sounds very low, not something that you really want and you agree. What am I missing here?

M. Laitman: They have no Reshimot [records] of that state, no awareness of that state they're about to attain. So you can't really say that they want it, that this desire comes from the inner form representing the connection they had between them. And that is why you can't say that this was a strong natural deficiency.

Student: What they receive with the Torah is that deficiency for the Torah or do they receive some light that they're receiving for the first time?

M. Laitman: They acquire the form of work that is clear to them as “We shall do and we shall hear”, as understood by them this way, and that's why their reaction is like this.

Student: That they agree to “We shall hear and we shall do”?

M. Laitman: “We shall do and we shall hear”, yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (09:14) What is this recognition that we have to come to? On one hand, you say, there wasn't enough of a natural lack, but we have to reach the recognition. How do we come to that recognition of the state that we want to reach? Just like now for example, we want to reach a new state.

M. Laitman: We lack movement from within ourselves, that is a problem. And this movement should be based on the deficiency in each and every one, and in everyone together. That is what we see, and in that deficiency we wish to receive a correction, which desperately desires to be connected to the will of the people. And that is what they expect to have, for the time being, we are not revealing it.

Student: But, specifically when we don't reveal it, it brings more of a deficiency. And as I'm asking the next question, how do we actually, we also talked about this in the preparation for the lesson, we see a certain deficiency in the preparation for the lesson, but how do we actually in the preparation already increase that deficiency so it will be a greater lack for something higher and greater that we want to reach?

M. Laitman: They don't have the ability to feel the deficiency. The true final deficiency is to be as one man and one heart. And therefore, here is seemingly the place where they stop. From the point of view of the upper one, He is asking them to come closer. And from the point of view of the lower ones, they are asking Him to bring them closer.

Student: In the preparation we talked about how in our common effort we discover the lack of one another. You talked about the lack of the people of the nation, how do we come to a state where we feel the deficiencies of one another? Already in thought, reveal what every friend is actually lacking, and to ask for that?

M. Laitman: What is revealed in them as we also just read and we understand and we discuss we have the deficiency from that state that's right before us, and we need only to reveal the deficiency for that. And this deficiency is called “Arvut”, where all of us embrace, we connect, and we bring out of the heart a deficiency to be as one, to be as one man and one heart, and then relative to that state, we begin to demand correction and fulfillment.

Student: Is the condition to receive from the friends very important in order to grow between us this constant connection to embrace and open our hearts?

M. Laitman: Yes, I think that this is the main thing for all the people of Israel, bar none in this state, in this event we'll feel, how much is lacking a connection with everyone, because in each one, in the heart he feels that he can observe the connection, only in the condition, on the condition that it will spread among everyone.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (16:57) What's the form of work? What degree are we entering?

M. Laitman: “We shall do, and we shall hear”, means that the nation of Israel, that group that now sees itself as a nation, as a people is ready to do all the actions that will bring it to a single connection, a single action. And that's how she's ready to advance.

Student: Why? It's like I'm missing this place of resistance. Everything seems to be natural. We agree that we will do, we will receive, and we'll operate.

M. Laitman: No, they did not have this, this lack, this deficiency, and they also didn't have Reshimot [records] from connection. Rather, it was said to them that you have to be connected as one man with one heart, with all your desires and all the records, and that is a new demand. Just as each one sustains his desire, now he's going to sustain the general desire, made of all the individual desires that connect, and become one.

Student: Was there an agreement of a nation, or of each and every individual?

M. Laitman: I think of the nation.

Student: What is the state in which an entire nation agrees? I understand an individual, but what is a nation agreeing with?

M. Laitman: An entire nation means that everyone agrees, unanimously, to come to a mutual deficiency. And then they understand that they're taking the final step in determining their corrected state.

Student: That question is felt in each individual, each feels it?

M. Laitman: This question is felt in each one, because here it speaks of everyone together.

Student: Can there be a situation where one won't agree with it?

M. Laitman: No, this is the upper force that's above them. He arranges them in such a way that the connection between them is revealed. And the inner desire in each and every one agrees to this work.

Student: What agreement are we talking about when he says that he agrees to receive the commandment? He's being coerced. He doesn't agree with anything. Maybe he's caused to feel that he's agreeing to something?

M. Laitman: No, the deficiency to be connected with everyone is revealed in each and every one.

Student: The act of agreement. I don't agree with the act of agreement of an individual inside a nation. He's brought to a state where he has to agree. And does he have a possibility to not agree? Or, is it simply another state that he's put through?

M. Laitman: That's clear. That truly they all agree to be connected as one man and one heart.

Student: Can you not agree?

M. Laitman: I guess. Yes, except the force that's above them that manages them. That's what He does to them.

Student: And what do they agree to?

M. Laitman: They agree to work with each one's individual desire to be aimed and to carry out the general desire for everyone.

Student: Is that the law of Arvut?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (23:20) Why don't they have records from the shattering? You said they have no records at that stage from the previous state. They have no attraction to that which draws them to this Arvut. Why aren't there records from the shattering? Why aren't they revealed in such a state? From the shattering of Adam HaRishon.

M. Laitman: I think that because the purpose of their development is such that they must be united, and connected together. The upper light that starts this action, this upper light arranges them in this way, one facing the other. And that's what appears before them, this connected state.

Student: Nevertheless, something here depends on them. They need to agree, they need to somehow evoke, awaken the upper light to operate upon them in this way?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What stands in a person, what brings them to want this connection, which they don't even know what it is. It's written about the privilege of the fathers or the rights of the forefathers. So, it's this specific state in which the light does start to operate on them.

M. Laitman: I think that's what's before them is to recognize the wholeness exists in their general agreement to the deficiency that is revealed in uncorrected vessels that are broken. And then they agree.

Student: Another thing he writes before that, there is the preceding exile of Egypt at work. What does it mean to feel, or to convene all the work that we've had so far? Is there some way to collect this entire deficiency that's been revealed throughout all our work until today? Or should I just work with what I have at the moment?

M. Laitman: I don't think it speaks of the past but about what's happening today. The same deficiencies and problems are revealed today, together with the intensity, the power of the connection. Anyone close to the connection, anyone touching it can feel that it's pulling him forward.

Student: The prior states already exist in the current state in a natural manner?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (27:45) You said earlier that we will come to a deficiency to connect with everyone. It's revealed in this high exalted state, it's revealed in each. Now in the state that we're in today in our work in the Ten, what actions can bring us closer to that state?

M. Laitman: All the actions of connection. All the actions of connection, of Arvut, that we can disclose between us, establish between us, they will bring us to such a conclusion.

Student: The actions, the main thing that matters here is the actions or the efforts to get there?

M. Laitman: The action itself seemingly comes to us from the Creator, the efforts come from us. When the efforts equalize with the power that comes from the Creator, then the action concludes.

Student: Many times, when you explain what actions make an impression, when a person performs an action, it's inscribed, it's counted. Sometimes, you can do many actions, but inside I'm not demanded of anything, no effort is demanded, so how can a person check himself that he's really acting correctly?

M. Laitman: Again.

Student: On one hand we say that the action brings the deed, makes an influence, makes an impact. And also, we also say that if you do according to the action, it becomes a habit. And with habit, you lose the taste from it. So, the question is how we check ourselves that really you're doing actions that bring you closer, and they have this value?

M. Laitman: In each and every action there's a part from you and a part from the upper one. Between these parts there are such actions that you cannot do. And the Creator also cannot do without you, but rather you do it together. That is why specifically this collaboration is what gives birth for us a new state. Which is like a common ground, a shared area, and that's where they meet. And from the point of view of the lower one, the person is ready for everything the Creator will do to him. And from the point of view of the upper one, He can see that he has the ability to perform an action that's for both of their benefit.

Student: If you could please expand on this state where a person came to this stage where he's willing for the upper one to do anything to him. Beforehand, you said that we come to this impossible state, where we have to do something in cooperation, in mutual. So, how do you need to operate when you identify states that you're not capable of overcoming? What's the next step?

M. Laitman: A man turns to the Creator, there's nothing more to do. Certainly, those past actions may come to a person because he's searching for ways to be connected to the Creator in a strong, consistent, permanent bond. That is why the Creator, who's giving these states to a person leaves them from the outside places for his participation.

Student: First, to identify that state is not simple, you need work to identify and recognize that I'm not capable. The ego's not willing to do so, it hides it, and after you discover it, it takes time until you manage to generate an outcry and a prayer, because it takes time to do so. But the question is - how do we identify this, or how are we cautious in the Ten? I don't work alone there, in order to receive this force.

M. Laitman: We try each one to relate to his friends in the Ten as if he lacks what he needs. But they have what he needs and that's what brings him to the complete connection.

Student: If I understood you correctly, you're saying that the efforts to see in the friends that they have what I'm lacking, and to try and exert at connecting to them, will give me the strength to turn to the Creator and create a state, which he, seemingly, will do in me what he wants?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (36:01) The friend asked about agreement earlier, and many that the forefathers agreed, you need to agree that the action is this agreement, to receive the Torah, to observe the Torah. When you said that we have to somehow take things to now, it turns out that if I check my day, I see that while I'm sitting in the lesson, I hear these exalted ideas of bestowal and connection, and the connection of the heart, and I agree, and from my experience, in a few hours, when I will be simply myself in the matters of this world, I'll see that I'm breaching this agreement, and moving to think about egoistic thoughts. And every day, this is anew. Every day we sign a contract in the morning, and in the afternoon, or evening, we breach it again. There's this lack of faith in yourself that you can agree wholeheartedly to be in this 100%. What can be done so that what we're learning in the morning will be our life, and something that we heard about?

M. Laitman: I think that each and every one will have to. Each and every one will have to be part of doing all the necessary actions and then together we'll reach the right outcome, connection, closeness and connection.

Student: We have patience. We have work, and we also have patience. We understand that the light is operating and the force of the society is operating. And maybe there are things that we don't understand that are operating upon us. How can there be… It's like we're certain that a certain point in time will come where what we're learning will be realized, and we will live in this.

M. Laitman: We try to be connected to one another to come to uphold the law of Arvut [mutual guarantee] between us. And let's hope that by that we are awakening a similar force from above that descends on us. And we will meet together in observing and keeping the law of Arvut together, the upper one and the lower one.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (40:01) So, agreement is a prayer that's been answered, broadly speaking, and an answered prayer has many, a thousand names: agreement, decision, reward, gift, you know, every interaction is a prayer that's been answered. So, not to agree means not to pray, it's not in that same direction the Creator is aiming for.

M. Laitman: And?

Student: I'm asking you, is that a direction?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, it's all the same mechanism of prayer and answer from above, or there's no answer from above?

M. Laitman: You can say that, yes.

Student: If not, what is the meaning of “We shall do and we shall hear”? What more can the created being do other than raising a deficiency?

M. Laitman: The created being needs to push himself to get through the state that he's in, to a state that he's obligated to carry out in the connection with the other.

Student: That the prayer grows to a point that it doesn't let him be, it doesn't let go of him?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: The pace of growing this prayer, where there's doubt - there's work. Is that where you can find a place for work?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Until he undoes this doubt?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (42:01) I heard you say that we're lacking movement from within ourselves. What is movement from within ourselves? What is that missing movement?

M. Laitman: You can say that this is the meaning of coming closer to the Creator, to a mutual action.

Student: But you said that there's difficulty here. On the one hand, the Creator wants to approach us. On the other hand, we also want to approach him, but it doesn't happen. So, what's stopping the need of both sides? What is it that happens, if both sides want it?

M. Laitman: Because we did not agree with the Creator on the relationship between us. Well, that's called “I to my beloved, my beloved to me”. This awakens participation of the hearts into one heart. There's a certain leap to a new degree of connection when we work from our hearts, our individual hearts. Nevertheless, we wish to feel ourselves in one heart.

Student: So, how do you make this transition start to operate from one deficiency, one heart, to begin to be one, relative to the Creator? How does it happen?

M. Laitman: This new connection where we all feel is active as acted on by this Upper force this is truly a big change. There are such actions like the leap of Nachshon into the Red Sea. We will continue talking about it and understand it.

Student: How can we overcome this block that there is now, where there's many individuals to become one in relation to the Creator?

M. Laitman: To come to connection in order to be together in front of the Creator I think that our path should take us from one end to the other, from one end of complete disconnection to the other end of connection. And then we will discover that we are connected and the Upper force is governing us, controlling us.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (47:08) In one of the lessons you said, and it's also felt now, that what's lacking is the feeling that we're dependent on one another. What exercises can we do so that I will feel, more and more, that I'm dependent on others?

M. Laitman: I can't find any other actions besides the actions that they're showing us from above that will help us uncover the common deficiency. I understand it's lacking, but right now I have… I have only what we have to reveal this deficiency in this way.

Student: What's the thing in which I'm dependent on others?

M. Laitman: What we're discussing now, in our discussion, we attain the fact that this is within our last connection. You can't quite say it's the last one, and you can't say it until you've done it. But that's what you feel. It's a sign for doing the last round, and with that you have to turn to the Creator.

Student: From above needs to be revealed to us the connected state, the next state? Should it be revealed to us so that we should agree to it?

M. Laitman: Not the state itself but it's posterior, it's backside.

Student: Yes, so the original question is what do we need to long for to this posterior to be revealed? On behalf of the created being he doesn't yet know naturally what he should agree to. He needs to agree from his heart, it needs to be revealed in him somehow.

M. Laitman: A person must agree to be together in all the connections and all the disconnections. He needs to see all the states that are at his disposal that brings him to wholeness.

Student: I see that in my friends in the Ten, I see they're constantly going through states, and many. And we're living in the state that we're in, on one hand. On the other hand, we're already experienced. There's, like you could say, these records from all that we've been through so far. There's this accumulation of states that become kind of an understanding, a little bit of rising above the current state that we've been through. If I understand what Rav says, it's like we reach a certain level where beyond that state we'll be able to rise above it and say what's between us, we are together.

M. Laitman: Perhaps.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (52:38) I heard, more than once, Rav explaining that even the lack of a response from the Creator is a response. How does a person move through this response?

M. Laitman: The absence of a response is to relate everything to the Creator.

Student: And when a person attributes everything to the Creator, there's this ability to listen, to understand what he wants, and why it seems like I have no response. Is that what a person needs to do?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (53:43) To continue what the friend asked you about this Arvut and reaching it. So, earlier when I asked about how to be assisted by the Ten, you answered, each of us tries to relate to his friends in the Ten as if he doesn't have what's in him, but he has in them what he needs. And that's what brings him to the whole, the complete correction. That's what you said. Now I identify some of the friends in the Ten qualities that I would want, and if I probably had those qualities I'd probably be somewhere else completely. The question is how do I acquire these qualities? How do I bring those qualities closer to me?

M. Laitman: By envying them.

Student: Envy, meaning positive envy, that I also want, yes?

M. Laitman: Of course.

Student: So envy, that's why I want this, but the question is, how do I adhere to this? How do I intensify or increase this envy? Because there's envy, but it's probably not enough.

M. Laitman: It's possible that it's not enough. That it's not ripe.

Student: Yes, so how do we get it ripe?

M. Laitman: Simply continue.

Student: Simply continue and not let go of it?

M. Laitman: Yes. There's nothing more you can do.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (55:44) You said earlier in every action of yours, there's a part of yours and a part of the upper. And between those parts, there are things that you cannot do, and the Creator, without you, cannot do. But you do it in mutual. What is this mutual connection between the created being and the Creator?

M. Laitman: The common space, the shared space is one that you cannot attain, neither with the power of the Creator, nor with the power of men. But rather, when they both want to complement each other and meet there and give everything possible, all the Arvut [mutual guarantee], then they meet above the space, above the place.

Student: What begets this common field between them?

M. Laitman: What begets this common field? It's like meoo both the created being wants to bestow to the Creator from that place, and the Creator lets it influence the space.

Student: How to correctly depict this? Because you depict it in many, many ways. It's not that the created being is chasing after the Creator, or running away from Him, or that the Creator is doing that. It's like they both have this common desire for togetherness between them. So, what's the right depiction of this? What's the right depiction of the relations between the created being and the Creator?

M. Laitman: The relationship between the Creator and the created being, depends only on the adhesion the person has towards the Creator. That's what determines everything. I have nothing more to add.
