Baal HaSulam - Letter 19

1.Rav’s Introduction: I hope that it is easy for everyone to find the letter. It is a very important letter, very cordial, very close, it directs us to implementation in practice, getting closer between us and the Creator. We decided to read it and let us try to incorporate this writing of Baal HaSulam towards us. It is very much to the heart, very internal. We recognize that the point in the heart is called that way because it resides within man's heart, within his inner emotions, egoistic feeling, deeper and deeper until it actually sits at the center of the heart. This is where the Creator places this point of contact with him. From this point in the heart, we have to feel it each time we of course we detect it on a deeper level, a more internal level and also the inclination from that towards the friends and the Creator. We have to pay attention to how much in the beginning of the path we used to think of the Creator and yearn for the Creator and basically turn to him and then the more we advance the more we shift our attention to the friends. The more we want to belong to them and the Creator comes later. Basically, after that an auxiliary assisting force, what is important is to connect with the friends. This is the sign of progress and a sign of correct advancement. Let us hope we will begin to feel how from the importance of the Creator we come to the importance of the 10. That there we actually feel that this is a womb for each and every one. This is our home, through the 10 we receive all of the relationship with the Creator and we connect back to the Creator. To feel oneself in desires and thoughts and relationships with the friends that I enter them and I am truly inside them surrounded by them, by all of the friends, that is necessary. That’s essentially the beginning of sensing them in the womb. Of course, there will be ups and downs in that with various problems so we will detect ourselves, find ourselves in a better way in all of this. Through the changes that I will have with the friends with this feeling that I reside in the 10, according to that I will have connection with the Creator. The right need to connect with the Creator that is not egoistic. The need to turn to the Creator as well as receive the response from him. In this path we will continue, we are truly getting closer on this track to a state where one can establish himself in the 10 and towards the Creator that works on the 10 from outside until we feel that he fulfills the 10. So let us read Letter 19 Baal HaSulam wrote this when he was in London in 1927 almost a hundred years ago and he wrote this to his students. So as students let's see what he wants to tell us.

Write your questions down, with a note next to it and ask questions afterwards/

Letter 19: (06:30)

2. R. (06:50) This is what is written, “know the God of your father and serve him”, meaning you need to know the Creator and to the extent that you know the Creator you can serve the Creator. Meaning understand how you can fit into the work of the Creator.

Reader continues: “Know means recognition because a soul without ….” (07:08)

3. R. (07:28) Even if there is an inclination towards the Creator to know the Creator and get closer to him, if there is no exertion, if there is no acknowledgement, some perception of the Creator that a person doesn't know what to do and he might be doing some incorrect actions. Here he says this is not good.

Reader continues: “Even though one has a soul he is not ready ….” (7:54)

4. R. (08:15) Even if a person has a point in my heart meaning that he has a soul, he himself does not really know and is not really drawn to know the Creator because he has a point that awakens him to search but he doesn't know exactly what for until spirit be poured from on high. Meaning there's a special relationship from the Creator towards him and accordingly he has to hear what the sages say about this and then he comes to the wisdom of Kabbalah and begins to see what the Kabbalists write.

Reader continues: “It has already been written, goodness and mercy shall….” (9:15)

5. R. (10:10) If the person begins to yearn the Creator and always turns to the Creator and talks to him and hears, and studies he begins to discover in every situation in his life it is the Creator orchestrating it and turns to him sometimes in ways that are more pleasant, sometimes less. It all depends on man's inclination, how to format him towards getting closer to the Creator until a person understands that basically on the Creator's behalf there is always a 100% desire to grow the person each and every moment. However, this desire comes into play in a way that can help the person grow, help him grow correctly. So, in each and everything, on the one hand we should say it is for our own good anything that happens and on the other hand we have to understand that we essentially are limiting the Creator in bestowing goodness to us.

Reader continues: “Hence in the beginning of ones nearing he is given a soul….” (11:46)

6. R. (12:35) Meaning if a person develops correctly in the 10, in the study and tries to follow the recommendations of Kabbalists then he slowly discovers that the Creator always takes care of him non-stop and it is only for the benefit of the person to develop in in a way that he will get closer to the Creator. Never look at others. Every person advances according to the root of his soul in a unique way yet the Creator takes care of each and every one. There is no person in the world who is left untreated. Therefore, King David, David represents Malchut, the totality of all of the souls in the world, he said that when he discovered all of it, he said only goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. Meaning the Creator takes care of each and every one this way.

Reader continues:” However one must know in one's heart that the Creator….” (13:57)

7. R. (14:12) Meaning the Creator cannot be revealed and show himself more than how the person discovers his deficiency to get closer to the Creator; only to the extent that there is a true desire to get closer to the Creator, to be like the Creator in the form of bestowal as much as possible, which is through the group, because otherwise a person cannot exit in order to receive. So, the more a person wants to bestow to the Creator through the group, this way he begins to discover that there specifically the Creator is coming closer to him. This transition from caring about how do I get closer to the Creator, to how do I get closer to society, and there through that I discover the Creator. That is a very important and critical transition. That only then a person really enters the right track. It happens bit by bit, you hear, you agree a little bit and then you disagree, you do it artificially until it becomes an emotional thing. That the friends become those feelings, those intentions, those understandings, that device, that tool that I can aim towards the Creator.

Reader continues: “One must never forget that even during the greatest longing….” (16:10)

8. R. (17:57) That is already the final correction. First, we are just going through the whole letter and after that we will see how to work with it.

Reader continues: “However a soul without knowledge….” (18:09)

9. R. (19:39) I have a lot to say here but, where did we stop? Let's stop here for questions and discuss and then we will probably continue.

10. S. (20:11) In one of the paragraphs it said that we always yearn for the true adhesion with the Creator. Where is the true adhesion with the Creator, how do we check in the 10 that it is real?

R. Our true state with the Creator can be determined only in the group to the extent that the group can connect to a single desire, a single intention, a single direction. Accordingly, we check and we also need to understand that we never discover the Creator. We always discover the group that exists in qualities, intentions, the state of the Creator just like you always have with any tools of measurement that we use in our world. We never measure something from outside. We actually measure a response of our device to something on the outside. Same with the Creator here, this is why it is called, Boreh, Creator, come and see. You have to come to a state whereby calibrating yourself, by adjusting yourself internally, you come to a state where you see and depict the Creator in a certain way, that’s it. That’s with regards to each and everything. To begin with the Creator is called come and see. We don't attain him. We attain rather how much can we build him within ourselves and thus recognize him. That's why it is called from your actions we recognize you. There should be no confusion about this. We the created beings attain anything this way, anything in this world, how it is depicted within us, and in the spiritual world as well as the Creator. It is all based on the vessels, based on their impression, what happens inside the vessels.

S. What should we hold on to? You see the group as great, the friends as great and the teacher is great, you come to the lessons, is this the true adhesion or not yet?

R. After I go through many efforts, rejections, disappointments to connection with the friends even a little bit. When I begin to realize that my progress truly depends only on the connection, and that’s essentially what I want. I want to reach connection with the Creator not because I need to discover him and to be closer to him and feel him but because I want to bring him contentment. Like a mother who tells her children to be together, speak to each other, play nice together. We do this to bring contentment to the Creator. That’s why we want this interconnection between us as much as possible. As a result of our connection, to the extent that the connection is real, then the Creator appears in that connection.

11. S. (24:35) What is the correct development of the point in the heart because the article says that only with the correct development, we can come to know the Creator?

R. The correct development of the point in the heart is that it can surrender, submit itself to all the friends and be the Malchut in a structure with the friends. That is the correct development and so in this way when I accept every friend as the greatest of the generation and I am beneath them, which is a correct feeling, that’s truly what I come to feel. In this way I feel the Partzuf of my soul. And then with it I begin to work as I work with a Partzuf where I discover the Creator's lights, the direct light and then reflected light and all the other actions.

12. S. (26:00) I heard the letters are not present in spirituality so how are they written between us through our overcoming in our connection?

R. Letters are emotions, are states, and we need to connect them in a way that they come together like letters come together to make words. Each letter is just a certain symbol but when we bring them together to a certain expression, they become a word. We will talk about it more.

13. S. (27:00) Why does the Creator yearn for the created being to the same extent as the yearning of the created being? What is this correspondence based on?

R. There is free choice. Otherwise, it is impossible to educate the created being spiritually. If we advance by necessity of course the Creator does pressure us but not spiritually, not on our spiritual level. It only happens on various beastly levels. That’s why we exist in this corporeal world where we feel all kinds of pressures. Where we suffer from one generation to the next. It’s all in order to necessitate us to exit to an upper world where all our corporeal world is just considered non-existent, because it only exists in our very tiny ego. That’s how it is depicted within us. We have to transcend to what is called faith above reason, the force of bestowal, where the true reality exists and all the worlds exist there. Our world is just a temporary shape in order to come out of it and start advancing and developing correctly. In our world of course we feel pressure and troubles and problems, all kinds, but not in the spiritual world. In the spiritual world it is all based on free choice. We will approach that more and then we will understand it better.

14. S. (29:19) In the beginning of the letter, there is a beautiful introduction or question. What degree of recognizing the greatness of friends and the importance of the goal do we have to retain that these students will merit turning to the Creator as a Rav, the friend?

R. This depends upon the students, the teacher always sees each and every student as a friend as well because he accepts the student in a system and puts him in his system. It is like you go to school, so even if you go to first grade the first day of school, even though you don't know what is going on, you are already being put in a system, in a mechanism. It is not a question towards the teacher but towards the student. To the extent to which the students will better connect to that system, to the friends, the students, the 10, the teacher and through them to the Creator, it means to have entered. Accordingly, he will feel how he rises and is being turned into a more serious way from one level to another, it all depends upon the student.

15. S. (31:12) You replied that the letters are states; we also learned that they are vessels in which the light appears in the various worlds. What does it mean that they do not exist in spirituality, these letters?

R. In spirituality letters are templates, it is like the symbols of specific states, that is how it is in spirituality. We will advance and then we’ll discuss it. Meaning each and every state in spirituality has a different sign because it is a collection of forces, certain forces. And so it is like the hieroglyphs, it’s how they accumulate until they build letters but when the letters are already shaped correctly, then we have 22 letters. That’s it. We will learn that it’s 9 of direct flight from Keter to Malchut, and nine of reflected light from Malchut to Keter, so that is 18 and then four more ending letters that belong to Malchut. Then that gives us all together 22 signs or symbols, which are called ‘letters’, Ot. ‘Letters’ literally means ‘signs’ and there can't be any more than that because that is the structure of the vessel. This is why in the Hebrew alphabet there's only 22 letters, and there are additional shapes, five more letters of MNTZPCH that those Mem, Nun, Peh, Tzadik, Kaf, they have an ending space, a specific ending shape which means they are written differently if they come at the end of the word but we don't express them differently, it is just that their shape is different. Why does it happen? We will learn that also as it all comes from the structure of the Partzuf. All of Hebrew, all of the letters and words and its grammatical structure all stem from the wisdom of Kabbalah, from how these forces accumulate in the Partzuf as there is nothing that comes out of this rule.

16. S. (34:44) Is it known or is there an explanation why the group is not mentioned in the letter (ladder?), up until now? It seems like there’s a direct dialogue between the Creator and the created being?

R. Look, he is not addressing the group, he is addressing the person, and of course the person needs to be organized in a group and that is just not being discussed, even. Because the person wants to change himself, somewhat, he already needs the group, he needs the environment and therefore it is known, it is presupposed. Because without the group you can't make any step towards the Creator, it is just impossible.

17. S. (35:52) The beginning of the very first letter, Baal HaSulam writes ‘know’ means ‘recognition’. What does it mean to recognize the Creator, to know Him?

R. ‘To recognize the Creator’ is that you take on such a shape that the Creator is clothed in you and from that, you begin to know Him, just like we know each end everything in our life. When do I know it, when a certain external appearance appears in me and then I begin to recognize it. From that, this is how it is. It is called ‘attainment’, ‘recognition’, and there are many levels in that.

18. S. (36:53) It says, what we just read in the end, that the Vav will return towards Hei which is the unification of the Creator with His Shechina. Can you explain what this means?

R. Yes, all of the qualities before the Malchut are qualities of bestowal, qualities of the Creator and only the Malchut is the quality of reception, the quality of the created being. We have to make a connection between the first nine Sephirot and Malchut; this means to cause a coupling between the Creator and Divinity.

19. S. (37:52) How can we add to the knowledge, to the yearning for the Creator since without it we can’t know Him?

R. We need to reach a state where we recognize the Creator within reason. ‘Reason’, Daat is a combination of Hochma and Bina, together, which enables us to recognize the upper force in a complete manner, this is what is called Daat. Daat means that we rise from the level of Zeir Anpin collecting all of our qualities together to bestow towards Bina, and then when we are incorporated all of us together in Bina, then our will to receive in Bina, because all of Bina is a will to bestow, so our will to receive, there, does a special kind of work which comes to a specific unique state called Daat.

S. What does it mean they give you a soul from the side of the circles, for those who want to come closer?

R. Ophanim is like a wheel that turns. That’s the changes that we go through in order to advance through the states and grow, each of us and all of us together.

20. S. (39:47) Does the Creator's longing towards us increase as we work?

R. The Creator's longing for us is constant and to His full extent and intensity. The question is how much do we discover of it? It appears to us to the extent that we desire Him. In order to not corrupt us, the Creator shows us Himself, His inclination towards us, exactly as we are inclined towards Him. It’s written about it, yes.

S. Is our yearning growing the more that we work for the Creator?

R. Of course, of course. And that depends upon how much we are in the group and awaken each other. The yearning does not come from above, otherwise it is not our work. The yearning for the Creator is what we need to develop from the states that we go through, especially in connection between us as ‘one will help his friend’.

21. S. (41:32) It is felt that Baal HaSulam is writing to his students to awaken and remind us of the correct thought pattern and direction. What is he reminding us to do so we can take it with us during the day?

R. We haven't finished reading the letter, yet, but he tells us that the more we awaken the Creator, the more the Creator awakens towards us, “Me for my beloved and my beloved for Me’”, that’s it. There can't be an awakening from above but for the extent that we activate the awakening from below.

22. S. (42:23) What does it mean to go in the coupling that doesn't stop? Is this a result of our work?

R. ‘The coupling that never stops’ means that I always want to be connected through the group to the Creator in a constant way. And even though I am thrown to different states, they don't confuse me or weaken me of course they do weaken and confuse me but I use that in order to only strengthen the coupling, the Zivug. Then it becomes a constantly increasing state.

S. So what is the action of the Zivug, the coupling, itself?

R. To hold on to more and greater connection between us and the Creator.

23. S. (43:25) On what depends on the ability of the 10 to acquire such qualities of bestowal so that it would rise from Zeir Anpin to Bina? Does it depend on me, the Creator, the group?

R. It depends only on the group, it doesn't depend on one person but only the groups. So, to awaken the group is the problem, or not the problem but the goal. If we truly connect and turn to the Creator and want to awaken the Creator then we are already set, we already have connection with Him and we begin to work towards Him.

24. S. (44:20) You said that we discover the Creator from the Kli, from the 10, so the question is what does it mean that we pray to the Creator to build us as a 10?

R. We turn to the Creator since we want to acquire the form of the 10, the complete vessel, the vessel from which we can bestow. This vessel will be a miniature version of Adam HaRishon, and in it we will be able to discover all of reality and even later, when we advance, we simply are expanding the vessel of our original 10. It simply gets inflated but it has the same parts, the same organs and tendons, all kinds of parts, and we attain more and more of it. But the vessel, itself, remains and becomes only bigger. Like we see a child, a smaller child, and a bigger child that begins to understand and feel and attained more this is how we need to see the 10.

25. S. (46:02) In this diagram, you describe that the 10 becomes Zeir Anpin which rises to Bina. Where is the Creator who longs for adhesion with the created being?

R. We imagine that the Creator as the upper force, the surrounding light, as something that surrounds and arranges u, both from within each one of us and within all of us together, and also from outside of us as filling all of reality, and in this reality, we try to hold ourselves together and to that extent we discover Him. That’s it, and try to imagine it between yourselves, somehow and we will discover it. We need to continue with the letter so I'm asking for your attention on what he's talking about.

(47:42 - 48:40) Reader continues” however due to the breaking of the vessels….” twice

26. R. (48:42) It is similar to how we are collecting pieces of the puzzle; we have a pile of different shapes before us and we have to place them as they should be in the general picture.

(48:57 - 51:21) Reader continues: “the matter of the unification of the Creator and his divinity….”

27. R. (51:24) I understand it is a little confusing as there are many discernments here that we have never felt before. But the more that we read about it the clearer it will be since what is good about this letter is that it brings us closer to a feeling, a spiritual feeling. Affliction, pleasure, the falls, separation, closeness, all of these things will be able to materialize to some extent in the work.

(52:13 - 59: 57) Reader continues: “However time will do what the mind does not do ….”

28. R. (59:58) How is it possible to connect our feelings with those letters? What is this process?
R. Slowly, we will begin to feel different feelings according to the source and the goal, according to our inner state. Then we will be able to sort them out, to what we can describe each feeling and our feelings in the different groups, then we will reach a state where each and every emotion we’ll ascribe to a certain quality of the Partzuf of the soul and then it will come. We can't talk about it right now because we lack discernments, but it will come. It is like a baby who is just starting out his life and that he doesn't quite know what is going on here, how things are connected, but that he gets to know everything gradually from experience.

29. S. (01:01:38) Is it possible to explain at least somehow what it means to collect all of the letters and bring them to the root?

R. All of your feelings, thoughts and actions, you must arrange them and direct them through the 10 to the Creator, what is not clear about this? These ‘letters’ are something that you will discover later, these are your qualities that you are aiming this way and in what way, through what connection, what form of connection between them. This is how it will happen and we need to understand this. It is like a small child, he can't form the words, he is saying letters -- ah, oh, something -- and later he learns how to express it using words, using the cavity of his mouth, the air that is inside, there's a very big system here. We should also look for those systems inside of our soul, within our forces. What we have corporeally also exists inside of us, internally, spiritually. We have to discover and activate it.

30. S. (01:03:24) What should come first: yearning and longing for the Creator, or loving the Creator?

R. The desire to know the Creator activates the yearning and the longing, this is in the beginning. And later when a person goes to in order to bestow, then the yearning and the longing to bestow to the Creator the aim of a person, this is how he advances. Good questions.

31. S. (01:04:22) What does it mean to ‘eat the old store long kept’?

R. It is when I don't go forward but reluctantly, I’m eating that which already went over. It is not progress; it is actually going backwards. You go back to previous states, desires and thoughts instead of advancing.

32. S. (01:05:25) Why is ‘the righteousness of the righteous will not save him’?

R. Because he fell the day of his crime, why don’t you finish the sentence. He used to be righteous, that is where he was in his righteousness, and then he fell and when he falls, he stops being righteous, he becomes wicked. It cannot help him, each and every person works only from the state that he is in.

S. But if we feel that we are doing everything?

R. What you feel is not interesting to anyone. The important thing is, is it the truth?

S. What does it mean to collect the pieces of the puzzle? What am I collecting, the friends?

R. Yes, friends.

33. S. (01:06:39) The letter is so profound, there’s ten questions for each line, here. What is the main conclusion to draw or to highlights from this letter?

R. We took this letter and agreed to go over it because the conclusion that we can derive from it is “goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life”. Meaning throughout all the states, whatever they are, I need to be connected to the Creator and realize it's coming from Him and there's 'none else besides Him' that He is the good that does good. If I feel the opposite, it is a problem for me. Something that I did not correct about my qualities in order to feel this state as good. There is nothing else here, no other reason. I need to constantly try to see myself with the friends and the Creator, together at the end of correction. Don't tell me it's far away, it is right here, the end of Correction, me and the friends and the end of Correction together with the Creator. If I live this way this is called ‘goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, each and every day. That is what we need to try and apply to ourselves.

S. How do we in each and every given moment in the 10 push ourselves to the final Correction?

R. For this, you have to go to Rabash’s Social Writings and everything that we have learned before. You are asking this? You have learned all of this.

34. S. (01:09:07) We also want to say thanks for this letter. It has so many emotions in it. And how do we increase the level of desire so as to feel the sorrow of the detachments?

R. This has to do with how well you are connected between you and to the Creator, how happy you are that this state of connection came to you, between you and with the Creator, and then accordingly you can feel sorry about disconnecting. But you need to try as quickly as possible inside the descent, to understand that you were given a greater desire to see that you now need to correct and to reach a connection to the Creator between you that is higher than before. Therefore, the matter of ‘goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, is that during the ascent and descent the Creator just wants to bring you up.

35. S. (01:10:27) He writes that the Creator increases these stimuli and if a person hears the Creator's voice as it says that ‘the Creator, the Lord is your shade’, then he does not fall from the increase of sorrow of the stimuli. What does this mean that a person hears the Creator -- ‘the Lord is your shade’?

R. Meaning even during the descent, he is trying to keep the connection with 'none else besides Him' and that this is also done by the Creator to advance him. Just as you place the baby before you and you let him go and he cries as he doesn't know how to walk but nevertheless, he takes a few steps toward you and this is how he learns how to walk and the Creator is doing the same with us. If we understand this in the group and we talk about it and understand it, it is not a problem.

S. Then he keeps saying that because he sees and hears that the holy Divinity also suffers because of the growing sorrow. What does it mean that he sees that the Divinity suffers as he does?

R. He feels these things are incomplete, they only bring us to wholeness, it is the creation of the deficiency of the vessel, that's why it is called suffering.

S. What does it mean Divinity suffers and he sees that?

R. Divinity, Shechina is that place, the general desire we arranged that has to be filled with the Creator.

S. So how does a person, before he makes connection with the Creator, how does he feel Divinity suffers as he does?

R. The network of connections between us is called Shechina and this network is empty, it is full of torments from not being able to connect with the intention to bestow to one another and from that to the Creator, that we are preparing this place for the Creator. We are preparing the Shechina and from this we feel the sorrow that we cannot offer the Creator; and the Creator is a guest that comes and fulfills it.

S. He replaces the sorrow that he feels for himself with the sorrow of Divinity?

R. Of course, we are not talking about that. We are talking about them being connected in the 10.

S. Why does it cause him to increase each time these longings until he completes the point of his heart?

R. He has to reach a state where the deficiency will be more real each time and the attitude of everyone or the relationships between everyone will be as one unique and unified relationship that the Creator will fill this relationship mutually, that there will be a connection, adhesion, a coupling between them and then from the connection between them. When the Creator appears in their desires, they begin to feel already the faces, meaning the degrees of connection, greater and greater, higher and higher degrees, meaning ‘rungs’.

S. I didn’t understand how by a person feeling sorrow for Divinity it causes him to strengthen?

R. If he feels the sorrow of Shechina then he feels the pain for everyone, he hurts for the society. This is what obligates him to advance.

S. But he describes it as ‘a longing of love’, that he feels that the Shechina loves him too?

R. Yes, yes, yes. This is what he has to think, he has to come to.

S. He is not sorry about this? If he feels sorrow for Divinity, how does this strengthen him?

R. The two are unrelated. He regrets causing sorrow to the Creator who cannot be revealed in his vessels, then he yearns to correct the connection between them, among all of the friends, so that the Creator will be revealed and will be happy.

36. S. (01:15:39) Only through friction can we increase our desire and reach the coupling?

R. Yes but we don't long for them, we long for the connection between us. And if along the way all kinds of frictions are revealed we have to turn those frictions into connections.

37. S. (01:16:18) ‘I will chase goodness and mercy all of my life’. Is this something that will take place with us or it is something we just have to expect that one day will happen?

R. If we advance, we will feel in practice, in all of the actions and states that we go through, that they are happening only in order to advance us to connection between us and with the Creator. That there is nothing bad in the world but rather that everything is directed toward embrace, connection, kissing, all kinds of manners of connection.

38. S. (01:17:11) There are two states, if you could explain the difference: there’s a state where a person supposedly, individually, goes through a stage where he tries to ascribe it to’ none else besides Him’, ‘the good that does good’; and, then there's a state where the whole 10 makes a mutual effort to do the same action and it ends with a prayer, a plea. What is the difference between those two states?

R. The difference between an individual and a general state. And what is important for us is the general state and how each one sympathizes with it.

39. S. (01:17:57) In the second paragraph, it is written that the reader can interpret what he says there?

R. I'm not interpreting any paragraphs here, because we only just read it and there's a lot more to go through and scrutinize in these things, in these words and I hope that you will do this during the day, that you will work on this letter. To read at least half of it as much as you understand it and afterwards it becomes more difficult. But do whatever you can to get into it, and accordingly it will help us as it is a very famous letter. So, try. And also help each other, according to languages, etc. For now, we are done with working on this letter. We will continue tomorrow; we will see when. Today during the day, I worked on it.
