Letter 37

March 24, 1927, London

To my soul mate ... may his candle burn:

I received all your letters. Be strong and we will grow strong; do not fear and do not dread them. Let it be a sign for you that when success approaches, the fear and dread of them grow.

Concerning your question whether to go to America, I do not know how to measure your spirit in the work of the Creator. Perhaps the enemies will find in it a soft spot to weaken you from His work?

Although “emissaries of good deeds are not harmed,” meaning when he engages in it—when he does not spend on it more time than necessary for the Mitzva [commandment]—if he is slacking and loses more time than keeping the Mitzva requires, the Klipot [shells/peels] have a place to grip.

Therefore, test yourself: Begin with preparations and supplies, and see and measure your strength. If your thoughts do not trouble you when not in the act, but rather, promptly after the necessary act you take yourself to the work of the Creator and can reject the worldly matters that drip from these matters, you will know that you are a strong man and go, for the Creator has sent you, and the Creator will bless your way and the work of your hands.

But if you cannot take away the excessive thoughts even when they are not necessary and during the engagement, and they trouble you when you do not engage in it, as well, then it is not you whom the Creator has chosen for this great thing. Rather, you still need to cleanse and hurry in everything that helps, as it should be with the emissaries of the Creator.
