Part 1: Lights of Pesach [Passover] - Selected Excerpts from the sources

Reader: We are in a lesson on the topic of the “Lights of Pesach”. We’re going to read selected excerpts from the sources. The study material is on the site, Sviva Tova and Arvut, you can send questions live through the sites. Excerpt number one by Baal HaSulam.

Reading: (00:23) 1. Baal HaSulam, Shamati, Article No. 41. What Is Greatness and Smallness in Faith?

We must know that the lights of Pesach [Passover] have the power to impart the light of faith. Yet, do not think that the light of faith is something small, since greatness and smallness depend only on the receivers.

When one does not work on the path of truth, he thinks that he has too much faith, and with the amount of faith he has, he can dispense to several people, and then they will be fearing and whole.

However, one who wants to serve the Creator in truth, and constantly examines himself, if he is willing to work devotedly “and with all your heart,” he sees that he is always deficient in faith, meaning that he is always short of it.

Only when one has faith can one feel that he is always seated before the King.

Reading: (02:36) 2. Baal HaSulam, Shamati, Article No. 41. What Is Greatness and Smallness in Faith?

The one who seeks the truth is the one who needs the light of faith. If such a person hears or sees some way to obtain the light of faith, he is happy as though he has found a great fortune.

Hence, those people who seek the truth, on the holiday of Pesach, which is capable of the light of faith, we read in the Parasha [Torah portion], “and they believed in the Lord, and in His servant Moses,” because then is a time that can impart that.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (03:51) He writes here that the lights of Pesach can reward a person with the lights of faith. What's special about the lights of Passover that specifically they can bring us the light of faith. Why can't all the lights or all the days of the year bring us less light regarding the, compared to the lights of Passover? What is it about them?

M. Laitman: There's a force there of the Creator that shines to the people who search for the light of faith and where He is ready to help people who are seeking faith.

Student: What is the light of faith?

M. Laitman: The light of faith is a force that is given to a person and brings the person the ability to be in faith towards all that he reveals at that time called Pesach, Passover, since he passes over, and that's why the light of faith is so special. It raises a person from a state of lowliness, emptiness, to a state of faith.

Student: So, the lights of Passover qualify to the light of faith.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: And our goal is the light of faith.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: But how can we be in constant deficiency for the light of faith, which is the goal?

M. Laitman: The time is special, and we need to prepare for it.

Student: What exactly is our preparation?

M. Laitman: That we want the light of faith, which is a great, big light, a very special light. And if we expect the light of faith, that's the correct preparation for the period of Passover.

Student: Why does a person need the light of faith?

M. Laitman: Because otherwise he cannot rise above his will to receive. And the light of faith raises him up.

Student: So, what exactly is a person's yearning here that is not reception? It's not to receive this light for himself.

M. Laitman: Yes, but he wants to receive the light because the light of faith gives a person the ability to rise above his ego until a person exits Egypt.

Student: In what vessel does a person receive the light of faith?

M. Laitman: In the desire to receive. A person comes to a state in which the light of faith illuminates the vessels that are in the desire to receive and qualifies them to be in order to bestow.

Student: I'm getting back to the lights of Passover. The lights of Passover are lights that prepare us for faith. What preparation should we do now in order to be rewarded with the lights of Passover so they qualify us for the light of faith?

M. Laitman: We need to expect the lights of faith, which raise us to the degree of faith for us to long to be in the light of faith, and for this to be for us a great prize for the period called Passover.

Student: Faith and light of faith, are they the same?

M. Laitman: Faith is a state, and the light of faith is the force which operates in that state.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (10:09) What exactly are the lights of Passover?

M. Laitman: We were born, and we exist in the desire to receive for oneself. And then we discover gradually what that desire is that we're in. And then to the extent in which we feel that all the lights that we feel during the time of Passover, we are not capable of exiting the exile. And with that, we really want and expect to rise above this state to exit exile.

Student: We always learn that the light enters the vessel according to the state of the vessel, meaning the vessel is what awakens the light.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, what is different about the lights of Passover that doesn't exist in, for example, the lights of a different state? Because Passover is a certain internal state. Why is this state so special?

M. Laitman: We were born, and we exist in the desire to receive for oneself, in order to receive. And we gradually discover how much that desire to receive controls us and doesn't let us exit it. That's called being in exile. And when we decide that we have to exit the exile, then we already yearn to come close to that light which will sustain us in a state that is above the exile, the light of redemption. And that's how we get to exit Egypt.

Student: So, that special state of Passover is because of the collision, because of the desire to exit, and the struggle, etc. It creates what, a special opportunity?

M. Laitman: Yes. It creates a special opportunity for us, which we really want to move from it to the control of the desire to bestow.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (14:18) Why, specifically at this time is it impossible to work on the path of truth?

M. Laitman: It could be, like it's written in several places, that during this period we feel more the enslavement, and understand that we have no choice but to come closer to one another and with the common force attain the forces of exiting Egypt, of exiting the exile and the desire to receive for oneself. That's that period. It's a very special period of time. There's no period that is more powerful than the period of the exit from Egypt.

Student: (15:42) I heard that in this period I have to discover my real desire. What should I discover in this period more than in other periods?

M. Laitman: A desire to exit in order to receive, which is truly opposite that which I was born with, or grew up with, and what I got accustomed to in my life. Here it is something new and special.

Student: How do we prepare ourselves for these lights? Because you say, and we also feel many times, that there is something special in this time. So, how do we prepare our desire so we don't miss out on this period?

M. Laitman: Learn what we learn, study the materials, the articles. It's all aimed to awaken the lights of Pesach. And then it works out that we exit.

Student: He says I have to be in constant deficiency for faith?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What does it mean to have a constant deficiency for faith?

M. Laitman: That we need to feel that we're lacking the light of faith and we cannot live without it. It's a feeling that we are constantly in control of our desire to receive. And then it turns out that we really want to exit it, and we try to collect more vessels, more discernments, prayers, requests to be able to have the force to raise Israel.

Student: So, along with wanting to reveal my true desire, I also get a deficiency for faith?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (18:56) I wanted to ask about what you just explained. That at the time of Passover, through the lights of Pesach, a person can get the lights of faith. So, besides Passover, a person doesn't need the light of faith?

M. Laitman: He needs, but there are periods which are closer to the exodus from above the ego, and there are periods that are closer to the ego. And we need to awaken those states in which all the lights and means to attain the light of faith operate upon us.

Student: And going above reason is the whole way, right? It's not only in the exodus from exile?

M. Laitman: That is all along the exit until the final correction.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (20:18) What does it mean that we exit Egypt? Because the vessels are still not really ready to bestow. So, what changes in the perception of reality or its relation with the upper force in the work that's regarded as exiting Egypt? What new thing begins here?

M. Laitman: An accumulation of lights being drawn to them, to prayers that eventually operate on a person in such a way that he feels himself as rising above the force of the will to receive, that pulls him and holds him down, but the person yearns to rise above it.

Student: This yearning, only in Passover, or it's something that starts to accompany him later in some way?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, how to portray our lives, our reality after Passover? Will we have more yearning that will accompany us naturally? Will it come to us more naturally? Will it be in us? What's happening there later?

M. Laitman: What happens to us is that in this period of time we feel all the forces that work on us in order to hold us more in the will to receive. And accordingly, we study them, we feel them, that indeed the purpose of our life is to rise above this force that is holding us during the period of Pesach, Passover. And in such a way, through the accumulation of forces, prayers, actions, our connections, as it is everything that is written about Pesach, we are actually rewarded with redemption, with exodus, coming out from the control of these forces.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (23:48) I heard that we need to feel that we lack the light of faith, and we cannot live without it. What does it mean that we can't live without it?

M. Laitman: The light of faith is what elevates a person above his will to receive, to the desire to bestow, to connection with his friends. And therefore, we discover specifically in Passover to what extent we are not able to feel and suffer our state anymore, to suffer our state, but rather we pray, we long with pleas and prayers how to rise above that state called exile.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (25:34) So, what can we suffer about the state?

M. Laitman: We can't stand the control of the will to receive over us. This is called the exile from the desire to bestow.

Student: I'm trying to understand. Is the fact that we're not asking the Creator to dominate us or we're still in the will to receive?

M. Laitman: We're still in the will to receive. We haven't yet reached a state where we ask of the Creator to come out of the will to receive, and that He actually does it on us.

Student: Until we ask the Creator, it seems to us in the Ten that we can come out by ourselves.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So what should we do so that the work between us will bring us to a cry and not that we think that it's within our power to come out?

M. Laitman: We simply need to check the connection between us, and the force that is holding us in Egypt, and our ability to rise above it.

Student: It's like our work is constantly in this direction of bestowal, but the control of the ego is such that we don't ask the Creator. How to change that so we would aim at reaching a request from Him so He would change it?

M. Laitman: We see that as much as a person wants to replace his state with a different state, that is not yet enough. He needs to know a few more details here about the exile, meaning in a state that is outside of the desire to receive in the desire to bestow. And how does he rise from that? From the desire to receive to the desire to bestow. This is what we have to learn. We need to reach a state where we can no longer stand being in the nature of the receiver.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (28:38) What kind of details are you talking about that we need to diagnose, discern, identify?

M. Laitman: The details that we are under control of our will to receive, and we don’t think about redemption.

Student: In the first part, before you came here, we heard, we got a lot of discernments, I guess from these days. What should we place our attention on right now to detect precisely the exile we're in? What are the discernments in order to make the work more precise?

M. Laitman: In each one of us, there is both a will to receive and also, to a certain extent, a will to bestow, a small one. If we connect between us in the small desire to bestow within each one, then we can reach such a force that by it, we can rise above the present state and in this way get out of Egypt.

Question (Spain 1): (30:05) How can we prevent Pharaoh from taking the light of faith to himself?

M. Laitman: The struggle with Pharaoh is a struggle that continues for quite a bit of time. And we need to prepare ourselves in order to be able to feel Pharaoh, feel his forces, his control, from which side do we approach him so as to disconnect his control over us. And this is how we get closer to redemption.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (31:35) More control for the will to receive is that it doesn't let a person believe that he can get from under his rule.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So how do we overcome that form?

M. Laitman: By connecting together and collecting our small desires, and this is how we reach a force that is capable of bringing us out of Egypt.

Student: How do we assemble all these small desires? How do we collect them? Because there is a feeling of control, but we don't reveal the opposite feeling. So where do we find these smaller desires that we need to add together?

M. Laitman: Our small desires can connect according to our intention, that we wish to be connected and all work with a single desire, and then it will happen.

Student: Lastly, how do you extract a prayer from this, out of this work? How can we extract a prayer so that we will have a true prayer?

M. Laitman: Try to bring our hearts closer and feel in our collective heart that same inclination to get out of Egypt, to connect between us. This is how we begin to feel where precisely this path is on which we get out of Pharaoh's control.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (34:15) Recognizing the exile, in each state we need to rise above our reason for that?

M. Laitman: Well, you might say that, yes.

Student: You said that in the light of faith you come out from the place of baseness to redemption. So I wanted to ask how in the work above reason in that state of exile, how to arrange the heart so we would give contentment to the Creator?

M. Laitman: Through our materials that our great ones have left for us, Baal HaSulam, Rabash, and others. Through all of these verses we rise above ourselves, we connect between us, we stand opposite the Creator. And then through such actions, and in our perception, we expect that He will raise us above the exile, from the disconnection between us and the disconnection from the Creator. This is how it happens.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (36:30) When you feel, let's say, some friends in the Ten have an awakening; it goes up, it goes down. Suddenly you see a friend who is uplifted, he yearns to help, to bestow from his internality. If you detect this in a friend, how do you connect to this? What do you do with it? It's like there, I see it, but I don't know how to use, how to leverage it correctly.

M. Laitman: We need to be ready for it, for the connection between us, so that through the connection, we can acquire a higher degree in the connection, and in this way more and more. There is nothing special here, but rather as we read, that connection is the most important.

Student: But for the time being, the friend is there, and I'm here, and it's like I see him, but I can't help him, bestow to him in his state, whether he's ascending or descending. But let's say that he does have an awakening and I want to connect to it, I don't know what to do.

M. Laitman: Try to connect.

Student: And then what do I do together with him?

M. Laitman: You want to rise together.

Student: I try to get to a place where he would feel that I also want it, but I don't know how to do it.

M. Laitman: If you connect his desire for an ascent, and his inability to rise with your ability to rise  together, then you truly complete each other, and both of you rise to a new state.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (39:19) I want to ask you on the other side, what should be our attitude toward the ego at this time? How should I relate to the ego now?

M. Laitman: In this time, I think that we need to truly be meticulous about the connection, about coming closer to each other and helping each other, not to look at the negative forces in each one of the friends, but to the contrary, to realize that these negative forces are now increasing so that we will overcome even more above them. And in such work, we can reach a state where no one will be able to stop us.

Student: Specifically because now, in this time, the ego can harm us, I need to see it as a help against?

M. Laitman: We need to not forget that our ego is a servant of Pharaoh, and therefore everything that is happening with all of our forces that we recognize, even in the whole of reality, these, all in all, are the forces that we need, all of them, so that with them we will reach the complete connection.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (42:07) It says, and they believe in the Creator and Moses, his servant. So what is the faith in Moses, the servant? How is it different than faith in the Creator?

M. Laitman: They believed in the Creator and in his messenger Moses, that in such a way I can get closer to the state of the exodus from Egypt.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (42:49) There's a feeling that this time, specifically now before Passover, is very unique as a certain alertness, spiritual fear, trepidation. Now, following what you explained about the exile, when a person has a disease but it's not showing yet, so he feels good, he's not doing anything about it, but once it starts to show, he's willing to do anything in order to get from under the control of the disease. So now, in this period of preparation before Passover, do we need to reach the feeling that we are willing to do anything to come out?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: The question is, the lights in Passover, the lights of faith that we learn about, can they act only if we come to the state where we want to do anything in order to come out?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Okay, so now what's critical about this time, as I understand, is to reach the feeling of the exile, to feel the state, to reach the state. If we don't, the lights won't act on us in Passover.

M. Laitman: That's right.

Student: Okay, so if that's the case, how during this time, we have a couple of weeks left, I don't know, how do we get to that feeling? How do we focus on getting to this desire to come out, that it's burning for us, it hurts us?

M. Laitman: That we all want to be as tight together as possible between us, and from that state, close to the Creator. We all embrace together, and with the Creator, together. And we want that all in all, this connection, all of us and the Creator together, this connection will elevate us to a state called the Exodus from Egypt.

Student: And how what you just described, can bring us to the feeling of wanting to come out? How does it make it so?

M. Laitman: Through our concentration, our desires, our prayers, we are able to reach a state where the Creator will do it.

Student: So, for this time period until we start the Pesach process, we have to be in this great tension, tremendous, otherwise we miss it.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (46:12) Specifically in Passover, we put an emphasis on making the vessels kosher. What is a kosher vessel in our work? What is it made of?

M. Laitman: A kosher vessel that it wants all the time to feel its individual state as higher.

Student: And why specifically in Passover do we kosher the vessels?

M. Laitman: This is why it is called… Pesach is called the Exodus from Egypt.

Student: How in the work between us, the connections between us, how can we make such vessels kosher in the connections, in the work between us?

M. Laitman: It's through more connection, more and more between you, that from the connection, when we reach an inner state that we all exist in, as one man in one heart, then we are rewarded with the Exodus from Egypt.

Student: Through this help that we get in Passover, and we make these vessels kosher toward the Exodus, we continue with these vessels onward? Is this a new starting point?

M. Laitman: Onwards, I don't know what will happen. What I know is that now, we need to depict to ourselves and to determine within ourselves what does the Exodus from Egypt mean?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (48:07) There’s a certain feeling between us of the greatness of the Creator. On the other hand, it blurs out the deficiency. We’re waiting for Him to act because He’s the one who should act in us.

M. Laitman: But He operates according to the conditions, that we are ready.

Student: What should we do relative to this feeling, that we have this tiny feeling? Do we have to say, this is the power of the Creator, or we need to work toward connection as if that little force is not even considered?

M. Laitman: We need to try to be closer to each other, to connect with each other. In the connection between us that we achieve, to discover the connection with the Creator. In such a way, from that state, we want to continue onwards, so that we have no other way, there is no other state but only to rise to the place of redemption.

Student: How to pounce on this connection we need to have between us, to jump on it, not to take step after step toward it, but to attack that connection?

M. Laitman: To attack means that everyone, everyone defines it as a single desire of everyone. And in such a way, we advance.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (50:29) You gave us a clear direction. You said that this time we need to be meticulous about the connection, come closer to one another, help one another, not look at the negative forces in each one of the friends. How do we do such a thing?

M. Laitman: Through effort, an effort in the hearts. That we all want to be as one man in one heart, attached between us, and in that point of adhesion between us to be attached to the Creator. This is all in order to bring us to redemption.

Student: Even before, speaking of connection between the friends, how am I holding myself back from seeing the negative forces in them? My eyes keep showing me the negative qualities that they're doing for themselves, and that's what I'm seeing. It's just this waste of the ego that's just rising up. Do I have to tell myself, no, it's not what I'm seeing, that they're beautiful, they're holy?

M. Laitman: You don't want to listen to such internal voices of yours, but rather you want to disconnect from them and connect with your inner forces that want to be together with the forces of connection that our friends bring out.

Student: But I'm a slave of Pharaoh, I'm only capable of hearing him, it's what he's playing to me.

M. Laitman: No, you're just saying that, there is no such thing. We are also full of positive forces and ready for connection. And if we will talk about that, if we will want that, then this is what will happen.

Student: Which positive forces are found in man?

M. Laitman: Whatever there is, whatever there is. Don't think that we are all wicked and that's it, no. In each one, there is a part of a good man, a good person.

Student: So how do I go from this bad person to a good person? How do I go from the negative forces that control me to the positive forces?

M. Laitman: You don't want to look at the bad within you but only at the good within you. And in such a way, you rise above the bad more and more.

Student: Why should it take me above the bad if I begin to think this way? That there’s a force that will change me, it's not psychological, I think good and it will be good. Why will the force be that changes me?

M. Laitman: It is a psychological force. That we, through our desire, can connect all of our seemingly bad qualities so as to be connected. And by them, we achieve the true connection between us. This is how we get closer to the Creator.

Student: Where will the cry to the Creator come from? Where does it stem from?

M. Laitman: I don't know what this outcry means, I don't know that yet, whatever is written in the Torah, and the children of Israel sighed from the work, these things might be very high. But for the time being, I connect all the things that seem to me as relevant for the ascent. I connect them together.

Student: Last question. You said that with the help of these verses about Passover, from Baal HaSulam, Rabbash, we can rise above ourselves, we connect. There's power in those verses. What is the power in the source material of Pesach that can help us?

M. Laitman: The force that is in our sources for Passover, they are such that there is a connection in them, with these forces, through which we once came out of Egypt. And this is why we can awaken those same forces again.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (57:08) In the articles that Baal HaSulam and Rabbah wrote about Passover, they described this transition. They made that transition, they came out of Egypt, Baal HaSulam, Rabbah, Kabbalists. By exerting, by trying to read specifically these articles during Passover, there's a matter of… there's a time frame here. There's a demand here that's somewhat close to their state.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: This is the opportunity? Baal HaSulam also wrote other articles about the world of Atzilut. This is closer, what’s here?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, this is where you find the main effort. So, how to connect this to what Rav guided us, to make it more meticulous about the connection between us? Because, seemingly, during the exodus from Egypt, the feeling is that it's a personal process, seemingly. Of course not, but how to combine the work in the Ten, the work in the group, and the process of the exodus from Egypt?

M. Laitman: Getting out of the Ten, or to connection with the Ten as one force, this is what we have to do. But it also happens to us, and it will happen to us. We simply need more and more to adhere to what we have in the sources.

Student: The exodus from Egypt, is that a personal process?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: A person is coming out of Egypt, a Ten is coming out of Egypt?

M. Laitman: A person, a Ten, the whole nation comes out of Egypt.

Student: So, where do we combine our forces in the effort of each one to come out of everyone together?

M. Laitman: The effort of each one, when they connect together, and they hold each other, this is how they come out.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (01:00:00) What is the state of redemption?

M. Laitman: I can't hear you.

Student: The state of redemption, what is that state?

M. Laitman: We're not in that state. When people feel they’re in exile, like in prison, and they want to run out, to escape it, to rise above all of these forces that are holding them inside, this is called exile, and distancing from their control is called redemption.

Student: So, each time we make an effort toward that state of redemption, we discover that we're in greater and greater exile?

M. Laitman: We haven't reached the state of redemption. So, we need to continue.

Student: When Baal HaSulam writes also that reaching the state of Lishma, the way to get there is, you know, Lo Lishma is necessary, but in Lishma we also have the states of ascent, and how not to get stuck in that state? In these states, all these states of success, we take it upon ourselves, all for my own benefit.

M. Laitman: We, when we will reach these states, when we feel that we have to run away from them, and we will make a common effort together such that we will gather our forces for connection, in such a way we will begin to rise above the forces that are holding us in Egypt and then we will do it. Then we will have the exodus. There's a lot to talk about, but a person who reaches it and tastes a little bit of that, everything becomes clear to him.

Student: It's clear to me.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (01:02:53) I’ll ask very practically. What will give us the power to build an attacking campaign, not simply connection, a special connection, but we're going for a serious attack? That's what I hear from here.

M. Laitman: This will give you the... You will get that from the force of connection, the good force that exists also within each one, and through it, you will rise to the state of redemption.

Student: But what will give it? What will give us the force to transition to an attack?

M. Laitman: Yes?

Student: What will give us the force to do it? What do we need to do to receive such a willingness to go out on the attack?

M. Laitman: A prayer, a prayer.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (01:04:08) In the society, we're going through a process of strengthening the Tens in parallel. We have this gathering tonight and every week. How can we combine the process of strengthening the Tens in the society to be part of the exodus from Egypt?

M. Laitman: Try. According to how much you know this way, that way, and you will see how it comes together, how it is possible to operate.

Student: Can we connect it?

M. Laitman: I think so.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (01:05:04) I want to ask about the transition from asking for the right help, the precise help, and receiving the light of faith. If we come to such a refined request, why is that not enough?

M. Laitman: How do you know that it is the correct precise request?

Student: I guess that when we come to that request, we know.

M. Laitman: You see, sometimes little children are crying, yelling, screaming. Truly, it seems to them that it's the end of the world.

Student: When a person detects his position inside the will to receive absolutely, and that it's from the Creator, He gave it to him, and he's asking Him for help to come out of it as the component of a great deal of preparation…

M. Laitman: So?

Student: And he's asking to come out of it. That sounds like a very high degree in that state.

M. Laitman: I don't know if it's very high. We already saw that after such a degree, we have some period of relief, seemingly. And then again, we erupt with a desire to connect, and to invest, and so forth. That is, here, there is no discernment according to which we can say, Ah, this is the end here. I must stand and cry out until the Creator will bestow to me, I'm not going to leave Him alone.

Student: So, what is it about receiving the light of faith that solves this problem, that's a solution to it?

M. Laitman: The light of faith is, it truly shows a person, it opens up the eyes of the person so that he can see what does it mean the state of faith. Then the Creator shines to him and he agrees to it.

Student: And in receiving the light of faith, there is still Pharaoh, or Pharaoh stops existing, there's only the Creator?

M. Laitman: There is no Pharaoh. There's only the Creator.

Student: Meaning receiving the light of faith, he's already exiting from Egypt?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Reader: We're going to go to a summary in the Tens, and then we'll go to the next part of our lesson,  with the friends.

M. Laitman: You don't need me?

Reader: We need you always, but... So, summary of the Tens.
