In modern history the Middle Ages are considered to be the time of birth of the Kabbalistic tradition, and the starting point is the appearance of the “Book of Zohar”, the fundamental work of Kabbalah. . Kabbalists, however, refer the creation of this book not to the middle ages, but to the 2nd century A.D. The disagreements are due to the fact that they are based on the studies on various historical and literary monuments of Kabbalistic teaching. The Kabbalists that have attained the spiritual world say that Kabbalah as a science of the creation of the world was born in the ancient city in Mesopotamia, Ur Haldei. The tradition of that time (around XVIII B.C.) tells about an inhabitant of Mesopotamia, named Avraham, who while exploring the surrounding world discovered that the numerous manifestations of various natural elements are operated by a single force. Studying the laws of the surrounding world, Avraham systemized the knowledge gained and used it as a foundation for developing a methodology of attaining a single governing force and its manifestations, by the way of various influences that a person feels on himself. He titled this research method “Kabbalah” (translated from Hebrew as “receiving”), and outlined his attainments in the book “Sefer Yetzirah” (“The Book of Creation”).
