Part 2:

Rosh HaShana - Selected Excerpts from the Sources. #6

Reading Excerpt # 6 (00:26 - 02:10) twice

1. S. (02:18) He writes, “I am for my beloved”, does it mean that to cancel the will to receive is to bestow in order to bestow, and it says “the purpose of creation which is to receive in order to bestow is revealed by that”?

R. “Me for my beloved” meaning that I annul my will to receive to the Creator that is entirely to bestow, then He is rewarded in ‘my beloved is for me’, meaning my beloved, who is the Creator, is mine, He imparts to me the delight and pleasure found in the thought of creation. Thus, what was hidden and restricted before has now become disclosure of the face since now the purpose of creation has been revealed to do good to His creations”; so what are you asking?

S. In the beginning it says that by canceling or annulling the desire, he says the result is the purpose of the creation becomes revealed but canceling the desire is only to bestow in order to bestow?

R. Well?

S. And he says the purpose of creation which is to receive in order to bestow is revealed, how is one connected to the other? The correction of the desire through annulment but it's only the correction, it's not the purpose of creation?

R. Man has the will to receive in order to receive, if he annuls it, so what is he left with?

S. If he annuls it then he is working, he's working in the ten in order to annul his desire and work only in bestowal but without reception?

R. How can he work without reception?

S. To begin with, initially maybe, only Lo Lishma, not for her sake?
R. But how can he annul his desire, which is the desire to receive, and remain without the desire to receive; so in what will he connect with the others, in what does he give something to the others?

S. So is there no such state of bestowing in order to bestow, does it really exist?

R. Check.

S. So annulling the will to receive is necessarily working in reception in order to bestow?

R. Annulling the will to receive, what did you say?

S. Is it necessarily working to some extent in reception in order to bestow?

R. You could say that, yes.

2. S. (05:40) What does it mean to annul, to cancel the will to receive?

R. To cancel it from using it.

S. How is it possible?

R. That you get forces on the side, such that even though you have the will to receive and for sure, for sure it doesn't disappear and doesn't refine itself, but you can still not use it.

S. So what gives you vitality, from where do you live?

R. That's the question, what do you live from, I guess that from now, the fact that you can bestow to the Creator, you live from that, that is your vitality.

3. S. (06:42) Can I ask about the beginning of change, what does it mean ‘the beginning of change’, Rosh Hashana, means beginning of change, what do you want?

R. You're asking is this a change in intention or change in action?

S. Yes?

R. So what do you think, we want there to be a change in the intention.

S. Clear, because it's as if the actions are always the same, so it seems like everything is the same and there is nothing new, so what is the innovation, what is the change that you want to happen?

R. What I want to happen is that in me, a change will take place, that I will be able to do towards the Creator the same action that He is doing towards me.

S. What does the Creator do toward me?

R. Bestow, He gives, how can I do the same action towards Him?

S. What does it mean that I bestow upon the Creator?

R. I feel Him, I guess, just as He feels me.

S. But how is it expressed because He's constantly hidden from you, so by what do you feel Him if it's constantly hidden?

R. When I discover that He is filling me, now I'm going towards that. I'm restricting myself. I don't want to receive anything from Him but to feel Him.

S. It's like we say that the Rosh Hashana, is the beginning of change?

R. Yes?

S. So what is this beginning that you want, that it will bring change upon you?

R. That it will give me the opportunity to bestow back to Him, what?

S. Why is it called ‘beginning’ or …. actually, why does He want me to bestow upon Him?

R. It’s the beginning.

S. But how do I bestow upon Him because in the end I have no reality, no creation, no Creator in my reality, all I have is the friends?

R. I want the force, the source that is bestowing me, that is holding me, to be revealed and that He is sustaining my whole life and I want to give back to Him, I want to cause Him the same action, the same feeling.

S. I want to ask, maybe I'm getting a little sidetracked, I hope not too much: In one of the talks you said what's left after a person is only what he put in the connection in the ten, that's the only calculation with him before death. So, but here we say that in the end the new beginning you want is bestowal upon the Creator, so how do you connect the two, what do I want left of me, that I managed to connect to the Creator or to the ten?

R. It's the same thing, that's the same thing because through the ten I'm connecting to the Creator, there's no other way.

S. So what should I ask, what change do I want to happen in me, to connect to the ten or bestow upon the Creator?

R. Connect to the ten in order, through them, to connect to the Creator.

S. Final question: I see on myself it's easier for me, this perception of bestowing upon the Creator, it is easier to go toward the Creator, I don't know, it's hard for me to go toward connecting with the ten, it doesn't come naturally to me, I don't want it. So what do I do with it? How do you begin to want to connect to the ten if in the end It brings me to the Creator, I don't know, I can't grasp it in any way?

R. Is it more difficult to the Creator or to the ten?

S. To the ten.

R. I think the opposite, towards the ten it’s easier to connect to them than the Creator?

S. I can connect to the ten, I can be with them together, I also see I'm doing things, the Creator is out there somewhere. But it's like it is more powerful to say that I'm going toward the Creator, I want to strengthen this need for the ten to be my vessel for the Creator, I feel it there, it's stuck. How do I make it a vessel, how do I, how do you make your whole life dependent on connection in the ten?

R. Because I don't have any ability to connect to the Creator; only through the ten.

S. I hear you say it but it's as if I don't hear it, I don't know what to do with it?

R. Can somebody translate what he's trying to say?

S. I can translate myself: It's clear to me that I have to connect to the ten and the way to reach the Creator is through the connection in the ten. But it's as if it's not clear to me, what it means that I connect the ten, I make it into a vessel, I don't know what to do with this thing?

R. It is like when you, I don't know, it's like playing on some musical instruments, so you need to, you have to press all the keys or you can't otherwise; to connect to the Creator you can’t do, only through the ten, we will talk about it.

4. S. (14:56) Maybe to expand on what the friend is saying, towards the Creator I understand there is the thought of creation, I understand that He is great and controls everything. He conducts all of nature, He is in control of our thoughts and feelings and everything, so it’s easy for me, supposedly, to annul before the Creator naturally. And towards the ten, I don't feel that they're so great and controlling all, the ten, I don't feel them even intellectually not even emotionally as if I can relate to the Creator because, it's like, He can do everything, He created everything. So how to relate to the ten in such a way because through the ten we have to reach the Creator, how can we see them as great that it won't let them sleep, what naturally happens towards the Creator but not towards the ten?

R. You are not developing your sense of hearing before connecting to the ten, is this clear or not?

S. In the mind, yes, but in the feeling we’re so used to speaking about the greatness of the Creator that, okay I want this great thing even in the will to receive, but towards the ten I don't feel them so great as I feel with the Creator. That's why naturally I'm aspiring to the Creator not necessarily to the ten, so our friend is asking how can I relate to the ten in that way, how to want the ten like I want the Creator?

R. It’s the same instrument through you hear, through which you feel, meaning you understand, you see, it is impossible without it, to feel the Creator. He is revealed specifically inside the ten until you connect all of those ten Sefirot that shine on you in all kinds of ways, you don't feel the Creator.

S. It’s as if the ten is more concealed than the Creator, the internality of the ten is more concealed than the Creator.

R. I wouldn't put it this way, but let's put it this way: It seems to you like the ten is closer than the Creator but, well it is difficult, it is hard to discover, to find.

S. We feel that if a blow comes, it comes from the Creator, we don't feel that the blow comes from the ten?

R. Yes.

S. So when I'm hurting, I turn to the Creator, I don't turn to the ten, okay, so through the ten, but I don't feel that same relation to that same extent as I do towards the Creator, towards nature. I don't see it in humanity, we’re speaking about how the Creator is conducting humanity, we don't talk about the ten conducting humanity or everything that’s happening to me, so it turns out that the reality, internality of the ten is more concealed than the thought of creation?

R. It will fall into place, it will fall into place.

5. S. (18:58) Continuing that question: The fact that a person connects to the ten with intention to bestow, by this he …. bestowing like the Creator and then he's in adhesion with the Creator with this quality, that's why it's so important to work in the ten?

R. Well of course without the ten he cannot reach this congruence.

S. But that makes him like the Creator because he's also performing his desire to do good to His created beings.

R. Yes.

S. That's why the ten is so important because a person cannot reach the thought of creation without working with the ten.

R. By connecting with the ten he becomes similar to the Creator.

6. S. (20:14) You answered a friend that by discovering that He is filling me and I’m going towards that and restricting myself and I don't want to receive anything from Him but only to feel Him, so in what do we discover that He is filing us?

R. By what do we discover that we are receiving a feeling of those vessels that were empty and wanted to be filled?

S. So those empty vessels, how do we attain those empty vessels?

R. When we want to connect with the friends in order to later discover the Creator in it, in these vessels and in this way we yearn for it. We discover the flavor, the hunger, the deficiency, until we discover the Creator there which fills them.

S. So this filling from the Creator, that's the connection between us, that’s what fills us?

R. Yes, yes.

S. So why is it empty vessels, it’s already a filling?

R. Because in the meantime they're empty until we bring them to the state where they can be filled.

7. S. (22:17) How to increase the desire correctly, to connect above being passive, that the importance for connection above being indifferent or a lack of agreement?

R. Is the question clear: How can we raise the deficiency for an answer, for a filling, for an answer for our question about our passiveness? It is only by awakening one another and understanding that we are in one vessel. And we expect that filling to raise us to a spiritual degree, a higher spiritual degree, and this should burn in us in this way.

8. S. (23:55) Can we view the center of the ten as a point where we rise above the will to receive and the will to bestow and the only thing that is left is the quality of the intent to connect?

R. Yes.

9. S. (24:17) On excerpt six it says that, “he imparts to me that delight and pleasure found in the thought of creation”, is this a result of my annulling my will to receive or is there something else to all of this?

R. Knowing our will to receive is the main thing we need to study and then learn how to correct it and how to satisfy it, how to fill it. These are the three stages we need to undergo and we gradually enter them and go through them.

10. S. (25:19) The Creator feels us and we feel Him, how can we keep ourselves from receiving for ourselves, what will help?

R. Initially we have to connect with the friends, establish our common vessel, we want to feel specifically, it, and then we will succeed in doing the right action.

11. S. (26:09) When does the Creator become ‘my beloved’?

R. When I want to feel Him in everything, with everything.

12. S. (26:48) A question about a state when a person is not able to use his will to receive for himself, that’s the stage of a correction of a desire. So what's the connection between that and bestowing in order to bestow, is it the same or not?

R. It is still not but we will soon come to it.

13. S. (27:18) You answered a few days ago, you said that every person must see himself as if he is responsible for the correction of Adam HaRishon and that actually give all answers to all question, from the ten to the Creator, if you put there, so your confidence grows. If you put yourself there so your connection with the ten is stronger and towards the Creator. That's actually part of the answer that you gave a few days ago, where a person took place at the beginning, that he's correcting Adam HaRishon.

R. Yes.

14. S. (28:16) If we go back to the excerpt we read, he speaks about annulling the will to receive and aiming it towards the Creator. So ‘aiming it towards the Creator’, according to what I understand, is connecting in the ten, so your inner tendency is constantly towards the Creator and then once you do actions they are automatically towards the Creator. So the question is to annul the will to receive, is annulling an action, it’s not always easy to do but in order to understand it, I understand what it means to annul the will to receive because I get all kind of desires so it's always worth doing it or only if I can connect it to the Creator?

R. Annulling the will to receive is not our job, our job is to bestow to the Creator, either by annulling the will to receive because it is in order to receive or we do the opposite. We use the will to receive because it is receiving in order to bestow. Just will to receive, it’s not good or bad or anything, this is why we have to be careful how we express it.

S. So every desire that comes we have to scrutinize and check it?

R. Yes, for whose sake?

S. Yes, for whose sake, and if I see it’s not for any sake so not to fill it?

R. Yes, yes.

15. S. (30:18) How about faith above reason? I came to a conclusion that as a result of the action above reason, man should feel how the friend is enjoying, how creation and the Creator are enjoying and that's like a checking that you did a good action above reason.

R. Yes.

16. S. (30:58) Connection in the ten is felt as an ascent, what does it mean that the Creator is illuminating in the will to receive?

R. I didn't understand, again please?

S. Just as I feel that when we connect and when the state of bestowing in order to bestow, we feel as if we overcame ourselves, like some kind of inspiration or excitement that’s how it connects us. So what does it mean that the Creator, that moment, shines in the will to receive?

R. I don't know the question is not clear to me, so please ask it later.

Reading #7 (32:25 - 34:10) “Now is the month of Elul (August/September) and it is customary that even regular people,...”

17. S. (34:20) It's still not clear to me what annulling our desires means, how in a state when a person doesn’t bestow yet, how can he engage with his own desires, what does he, first I heard you say that he doesn't use the desire so what does he do, he pushes it to the side, what does he do with it?

R. Yes, he can suppress it, forget about it, do all kinds of things, one opposite to the other.

S. When we try to break a desire, don’t we get two, we always hear that?

R. No, it’s just something people say.

S. So what's the right way to work in the stage that a person isn’t in attainment, how to work with his desires, how to know what desire to activate and which one to toss away or suppress?

R. He should check what is for his benefit?

S. Right now all the desires are for my benefit even when I come to the lesson, there's no place of bestow in my heart?

R. But still you choose which desires to use and which not.

S. The desires, that’s clear, that it’s because I'm on the path studying Kabbalah so that’s what I do because the Kabbalists said that I'm supposed to do. Maybe it’s still egoistic, for sure, but there are many desires in life that we have to exist in the world. So how can a person know, it's also connected to the previous lesson because he said that we need to get some guidance, what is that guidance, how does he know, this is yes, this is not, there are things that are clear that are ‘no’ but there are things that aren’t clear.

R. Scrutinize with the friends.

S. How can you scrutinize such things with the friends?

R. You are in the society.

S. Yes?

R. Speak to them, tell them what you want and they will tell you and discuss it.

S. What, to sit and open the heart or like a psychologist that they tell me, “yes or no”?

R. Not like a psychologist but like a friend, this is a little bit different.

S. It just feels like work that has to be done in every moment and the ten doesn't have time to deal with me and my desires.

R. If you are connected together then you can say what the friends are thinking and how each of them wants to live. In short, what we see from here is that we still have a lot of work and we are lazy, we are lazy.

18. S. (37:45) Maybe you can help me understand what's going on here but he says that “the knowledge of the Torah is annulling reality and the landlord is existence of reality”, so this got complicated. He says that “he needs to perform Torah on the basis of faith and it’s difficult for him, that a person would be happier if he had everything in knowledge”. So how can you connect all these things, who's the landlord, who's the student of the Torah?

R. A landlord is someone who wants to be the landlord.

S. What does that mean?

R. ‘Landlord’ means that his will to receive dictates to him what to do and he’s trying to do it.

S. So how can you explain the sentence that “he has to take Torah and Mitzvot on the basis of faith and it’s difficult for him”? Meaning that a person will be happy if everything was in his knowledge, so it's obvious if I knew everything, everything will be easy. So what does it mean that it has to be on the basis of faith, that I’m performing Torah and Mitzvot on the basis of faith

R. Faith is bestowal.

S. So what does it mean ‘to perform Torah and Commandments on the basis of faith,’ how to explain that?

R. That he would like to do them in order to bestow.

S. Then everything is revealed, so why is everything revealed, why does he need the Torah and commandments if everything is revealed to me, I’m already bestowing, why do I need Torah and commandments?

R. If you are already in bestowal then there's nothing more for you to do.

S. But if I’m bestowing, a Kabbalist, he does Torah and Mitzvot if he’s bestowing?

R. You are not, you don't even feel how you're twisting everything!

S. I don't understand what it means?

R. The fact that you don't understand doesn't mean you can speak this way!

S. What does it mean that a Kabbalist, does he engage also in Torah and commandments?

R. Kabbalists engage only in Torah and commandments.

S. What does it mean?

R. He does all his actions only according to the Torah and Mitzvot, the commandments, only in acts of bestowal.

19. S. (40:55) I heard you say we have to ‘fill’ the Creator, in what do we fill Him?

R. With wanting to give Him contentment.

20. S. (41:14) Can we say that the intention to bestow is our point of adhesion with the Creator?

R. Of course.

21. S. (41:29) How do we break through the barrier, the Machsom, between us and the ten?

R. We break the barrier between us by canceling our ego.

22. S. (41:50) What's the difference between connecting in the ten and connecting the ten?

R. ‘Connecting to the ten’ means a person connects as part of the ten to the ten, when ‘he connects the ten’, not to the ten, by this, he causes the ten to be united together.

S. His connecting the ten, connects the ten?

R. That, too, of course.

S. What sense of hearing opens when a person connects to the ten?

R. ‘Sense of hearing’ opens when you connect to the ten when he extols, exults his force, when he increases his forces of bestowal and begins to hear the Creator, to hear the voice of His words.

S. What does he hear?

R. He hears the voice of the Creator, voices of bestowal, commandments, tips, counsels.

23. S. (43:22) What is the knowledge of the landlords and the knowledge of the Torah? If I increase the ten or define them as the home where there's food and I just live in there, that's all my vitality in that home, where I enter and live. He says here that the existence of reality, meaning if I try to strengthen that home, that's the reason of the landlord. So how do I increase my desire to strengthen that place, the ten as a home but as a student of the Torah?

R. I didn't understand your question.

S. He says that the knowledge of the landlord, the person tries not to exit reality but to annul. He tries to annul reality and then he's not the landlord but he advances through the knowledge of the Torah. So my question is if the ten becomes each one’s home, the friends in the ten, when he enters there he gets nourishment, his thoughts are there, his life is in that home called the ten. How is that home, how does it become in the knowledge of the Torah and not in the knowledge of the landlord?

R. They annul themselves so what they feel in the connection between them in this home is that they have a common vessel.

S. Yes but existing reality as a ten, how does that become the desire? That this home will only strengthen as the view of the Torah?

R. I don't understand the question.

S. What I understand from the view of the Torah is that the reality constantly has to be annulled and he has to get a high reality. So how is that reality that I'm constantly strengthening, the existence of the ten in my world, how does it become the view of the Torah and not the view of the landlords, the right form?

R. By annulling themselves.

Reading #8 (46:21) “The meaning of Rosh Hashana [New Year’s Eve] is a new beginning, when a person begins to build a new structure…”

24. R. (47:04) That's clear right? Everything depends on a person's decision.

Reading #9 (47:15) “Rosh Hashanah [beginning of the year] means the beginning of the creation of man…”

25. S. (48:40) What is the beginning if the work is endless?

R. What is the beginning?

S. Yeah, what is the beginning in spiritual work because we said that Rosh Hashana is the beginning. So if spiritual work is endless, what is the beginning called?

R. When a person nevertheless says that from this day onward I'm taking it upon myself new laws, new conditions, new limitations and I’m moving forward with them. Then this is called for him a new year, that he wants from now on to bring himself into a new degree. We are now actually in a very special situation. We went through many stages and we can and we are ready to be supportive of each other. I think that we are already worthy of spiritual ascension, we just need to be closer together between us and be more concerned about everyone so that all together our desire will push us to the goal forward.

But there is a very special force here, both a masculine force and a feminine force. Those who are here and those who are not with us for the time being, those who are on the way to us on the road, we can come to such a power of connection, such pressure between us that we will come to the state of Rosh Hashana, the beginning of the year. This is what I hope very much, that we will feel. The main thing for us is only to connect all of our tendencies together and be ‘as one man with one heart’ as much as possible. Men, women, everyone together, it doesn't matter what gender or age and this is how we will succeed. I see in you an ability in these tough times, these confused times, an ability to achieve a great achievement, we see that this is how it’s really happening. So let's make efforts in our hearts and simply open our hearts, incorporate all the hearts in everyone’s hearts and then the Creator will shine at the center of each and everyone's hearts and all the hearts will shine together. This is actually what’s before us and we, when we will feel that we are powerless, that we don't have enough high spirits, joy, unity, it’s all there, but it’s inside. We have to bring it out and then we’ll succeed.

26. S. (54:21) I wanted to ask about this last week when you weren’t with us in the lessons. What should a group learn in times when Rav isn’t with them in the lessons? Why does it come?

R. There is no problem whatsoever if he’s there or not there at the head of the group. The group should continue on its way and there's no issue here.

S. But reality shows us that it does prevent something, there are people who get weaker.

R. So we have to see to it that there is no weakness, no fall but rather we will continue, we continue. There are periods when a person is sick or tired, he's got no strength but it passes in the end and we return to action. To every state you have night, day, light, darkness and this is how we continue. That's it, I have nothing to add. This world will also at some point end and after that there will be another world and another world and this is how we continue.

27. S. (56:42) In our renewing what do we leave behind and what do we want to take forward?

R. To move forward, only the connection between us and everything else we leave behind.

28. S. (57:10) Continuing what you said before, there's a lot of force here. I feel that once I incorporate with the friend that asks a question, opens his heart, it gives a lot of force when you connect to someone who is asking. The question is: There's a lot of friends who have a lot of forces here but they don't always ask, so how do we connect with that force or does it happen automatically?

R. We should by force connect to the force.

S. By force connect to the force, what does that mean?

R. Yes, just like that. Don't leave anything to be done by itself.

29. S. (57:57) You said we need to open the heart so I want to open the heart because inside all the friends are sitting and the whole world Kli. It’s really felt that in this Rosh Hashana there's a new, beautiful cloud, that we do want from below to really raise our prayers. I heard you say that we’re lazy, so we want to be not lazy. It says that whoever wants to be righteous, is righteous, not the one succeeding. So maybe we’ll unite all the desires of the whole world Kli and together we'll sing to end. We have this friend here and I really want him to sing with me now if you allow us.

M. Let's do announcements before and then we’ll end the lesson and sing.
