Reading: (00:17) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #56

56) Now you can understand the words of our sages, “What is repentance like? When He who knows the mysteries will testify that he will not return to folly.” These are seemingly perplexing words, for who would rise to heaven to hear the testimony of the Creator? Also, before whom should the Creator testify? Is it not enough that the Creator Himself knows that the person repented with all his heart and will not sin again?

From the explanation, the matter becomes very simple: In truth, one is not absolutely certain that he will not sin again before he is rewarded with the above attainment of reward and punishment, meaning the revelation of the face. This revelation of the face, from the perspective of the Creator’s salvation, is called “testimony,” since His salvation in itself, to this attainment of reward and punishment, is what guarantees that he will not sin again.

It is therefore considered that the Creator testifies to him. It is written, “What is repentance like?” In other words, when will one be certain that he has been granted complete repentance? For this, one is given a clear sign: “When He Who knows the mysteries testifies that he will not return to folly.” This means that he will attain the revelation of the face, at which time His salvation itself will testify that he will not return to folly.

Question (Kyiv 1): (02:44) What is that state of not returning to folly? We learned that Kabbalists always go through ascents and descents, so what is that state?

M. Laitman: It's a state where he understands in what relation to revelation of the Creator he's in. That's it.

Student: And it does not allow him to fall?

M. Laitman: Yes, it holds him. Since the Creator shows him his relation, that's why he won't fall.

Question (Turkiye 1): (03:50) In the beginning of item 56, he writes, “until the One who knows the mysteries will testify that the person will not return to folly.” So, what does it mean that the Creator testifies about the person?

M. Laitman: Testifies about a person is the relation between the Creator to the person is such that the person can't fall into a sin. That's called that He testifies.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (04:38) We always say that the Ten holds the person, and here he says that the Creator or the revelation of the Creator holds the person. So, what changes in one's attitude towards the Ten with that state of not returning to folly?

M. Laitman: We'll learn about it in a moment.

Question (Rehovot): (05:09) This state where the Creator testifies that one will not fall from the degree, where is there a place here when there's no room for error anymore? To fall and then to continue.

M. Laitman: Yes. It's a state where a person already knows, and understands, and feels that that's how the Creator is relating to him, testifying about him that he won't sin anymore, that he won't fall. That's the Creator testifying on a person. That's why repentance in such a state is considered complete repentance.

Student: Seemingly, there's no room left for error, mistake.

M. Laitman: Right, if the Creator testifies about him, then obviously, on behalf of the person, there won't be a mistake.

Student: So, how can you advance?

M. Laitman: We'll see in a moment. He still doesn't have a revelation of face. He's still in a sort of concealment.

Question (W Heb 1): (07:21) At that point where one is awarded with the revelation of the face, from that point onwards, what does a descent look like? Because you still have ascents and descents, so how will a descent look like from that point onwards?

M. Laitman: A person is given an opportunity to strengthen in his faith, and this is how he advances.

Question (Latin 11): (08:20) To justify the Creator in everything, does that mean repentance?

M. Laitman: Yes, to justify the Creator in everything, that's called to perform the complete repentance.

Question (W MAK 145): (09:00) In our Ten lately, we've been feeling greater and greater connection, especially with the October Convention. We felt it, and now we feel the presence of the Creator. Can it be said that we're now transitioning to a state of the revelation of the face? And is that a gradual change, or is it a kind of jump, a skip? After that, we understand that we won't return to folly.

M. Laitman: It happens gradually. Gradually until you reach revelation, and then it's clear to a person what state he's in.

Student: So, the entire Ten needs to attain this?

M. Laitman: Not necessarily. Everybody has to yearn for it.

Question (W Spain 1): (10:20) What is folly in spirituality? What does it mean to be a fool?

M. Laitman: That's when he doesn't understand. According to his knowledge, according to his states, he doesn't understand what's happening to him. And then, that's called folly, a fool.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (11:08) The reward a person receives, is that the power to go above reason?

M. Laitman: The reward is the force to go above reason, yes.

Question (W Kabu 2): (11:36) Is this a place where we agree that the Creator can take our soul?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Is it between two worlds?

M. Laitman: It's when a person is still, on one hand, in the state he was, on the other hand, there's an opportunity to ascend to a higher degree.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (12:38) What is the sign that we get in the Ten? Because I just heard you say that we need to receive this answer that we can always overcome and rise to a new degree, but what is that sign we get in the Ten that the Creator is truly clothed in us when we feel that state of reward and punishment in the work?

M. Laitman: It's a state that we feel that if we ascend to a higher degree, that will be an answer for all the questions we had.

Student: How is it expressed in our work, this sign, that feeling that we're really getting an answer from the Creator?

M. Laitman: We feel it. The Creator fills all our questions. He fills all the doubts. And in this way, we rise to a degree of repentance.

Student: So the scrutinies we make together in the Ten. Let's say, we received some kind of insight in the morning lesson, and we carry it with us in the Ten throughout the day, performing scrutinies. These scrutinies are supposed to carry us forward, so it means that we have confidence that we want to advance more together.

M. Laitman: Yes, correct.

Reader: Let's continue item 57.

Reading: (14:25) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #57

57) This above-mentioned repentance is called “repentance from fear.” This is because although one returns to the Creator with his heart and soul, until He who knows the mysteries testifies that he will not return to folly, that certainty that he will not sin again is due to one’s attainment and sensation of the terrible punishment and wicked torment extending from the transgressions. Because of this, one is certain that he will not sin, just as he is sure that he will not afflict himself with horrible suffering.

However, in the end, these repentance and certainty are only because of the fear of punishment that extends from the transgressions. It turns out that one’s repentance is only due to fear of punishment. Because of this, it is called “repentance from fear.”

Question (Florida): (15:47) How is it that one is rewarded from repentance from fear? It feels like he's still working in order to receive by wanting to avoid the suffering.

M. Laitman: Repentance from fear is when a person, according to everything he feels in relation to the Creator, he becomes completely confident that he won't sin, that he won't fall into a state that he'll be waiting for some action from the Creator, but he himself performs those actions. And that's what will protect him that he won't fall anymore.

Question (W Unity): (17:38) The Creator, when He testifies about the person, does it happen in the beginning of the degree of reward and punishment or when a person has completed a certain measure of exertion and completed the degree?

M. Laitman: It happens in the beginning.

Student: So, the person then works with the correction of the desires alongside with the help of the Creator, and then he sees the outcome of his work. And then a transition happens to the state, to the degree of love. So, maybe it's such that a person discovers that whatever he does, the Creator always relates to him positively, treats him well, but it happens only if I correct the desire fully. Can we say that?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: If I may, another point. So, the degree is finished, and then you transition to the next degree each time again, but also each degree is divided into sub-degrees. So, the person receives an illumination from future states despite still being under concealment. So, maybe a person can somehow, in some way, perhaps not permanently, but he can feel confidence from the future revelation of the faith.

M. Laitman: Correct.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (19:21) When is a person rewarded with the Creator testifying on him, about him, that he won't fall?

M. Laitman: That's repentance from fear, spiritual fear. So, that's in item 57.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (20:01) What does it mean to return to the Creator with heart and soul?

M. Laitman: All his heart and soul, a person, does everything in order to be in contact with the Creator.

Question (PT 17): (20:45) The definition of reward and punishment is such that a person defines for himself values regarding advancement in the Creator's work, or perhaps he sees that he's not advancing, is that correct?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, why does he write in item 57, he seems to attribute it to fear of punishment, of torment. It's an advanced state, but not yet complete.

M. Laitman: Because he still didn't finish the work. He still has fears, he has doubts.

Student: So these transitions between reward and punishment, that's still from the ego?

M. Laitman: Yes, it's still from the ego.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (21:53) I wanted to scrutinize and perhaps ask a question from that. So, we talk about the degree of reward and punishment. First concealment, it's written that the One who knows the mysteries testifies about the person, that's repentance from fear, right so far?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So here, above that, enters the work of the screen. To rise above that to, let's call it in the spiritual spectrum, here there needs to be a transition where the one is detached from calculations of reward and punishment, yes?

M. Laitman: Let's say.

Student: So, what can the created being do now, when he identifies that he's working from his will to receive because of reward and punishment, and he wants to make different calculations?

M. Laitman: I don't understand. What does he want to do?

Student: To work above the degree of reward and punishment, to work just in order to bestow. He wants to rise to that kind of calculation.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What can he use to assist himself in rising to a higher kind of work?

M. Laitman: That for him, the reward will be, as reward and punishment for him - it will be the same thing.

Student: Yes, but how does he construct it such that the reward, this reward will be bestowal?

M. Laitman: That's natural. It comes from the deeds.

Student: What deeds?

M. Laitman: When a person scrutinizes his relation to the Creator, and it becomes clear to him that he wants to perform actions that are as bestowal to the Creator.

Student: So, his attitude now, well, he transitions into a kind of interaction with the Creator, and only with Him.

M. Laitman: What else should there be?

Student: Because his calculation of self-benefit always exists there in the background. So here, the One who knows the mysteries knows that the person won't return to folly. It means that the person doesn't think about himself anymore, that doesn't exist. Is that the degree I'm asking?

M. Laitman: On his own, he won't exist, yes.

Question (CzechSlovak 4): (25:44) Is that state a thing that we need to attain in the Ten between us?  That state of fear, is that what we need to attain in the Ten?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (26:17) How to ask for repentance in the Ten?

M. Laitman: How to ask for repentance in the Ten? Connect together. And from the common desire to turn to Him and ask.

Student: If a person thinks he did everything possible in the Ten and still did not receive an answer, does it mean that he didn't do everything yet, or that he doesn't know how to ask for repentance?

M. Laitman: There might be a few more reasons. A person in the Ten, he needs to reach a state that he is completely dependent on the Ten.

Student: To reach a state of complete dependency on the Ten, and then?

M. Laitman: And then his future is a result of his relation in the Ten.

Question (MAK 3): (27:42) If a person is awarded with the revelation of the face, so from that point on, what is he free in?

M. Laitman: He constantly needs to lift himself to a height that is above his personal, individual desires. That's it.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (28:21) What is a sin exactly?

M. Laitman: A sin? What do you think?

Student: It's difficult, because I think about myself. I'm wondering if my sins belong to the Creator. Yes or no?

M. Laitman: But you are performing them.

Student: I did. I acted according to how I was created.

M. Laitman: That means you want to say this, that you actually don't have any freedom of choice, and any free actions.

Student: That's what it feels like, yes.

M. Laitman: So, what do you do?

Student: If He has mercy, well, I ask, emotionally. But it takes a long time for the true prayer. I don't want to sin. I don't want the sin to come from me. But I suppose He wants it. It seems to me that He wants me to perform sins, another, and another.

M. Laitman: When you do a sin, then another sin, and another sin, and then what will be the end?

Student: I hope that the end will be such that I only perform acts of connection towards my Ten. But when will I perform even one action towards connection in my Ten? I want to justify the Creator, who does everything, He's the Good who does good, but my sin doesn't feel like good and doing good. It feels like, well, wronging the whole of creation.

M. Laitman: Yes, so you want to come out of that state?

Student: Of course.

M. Laitman: So, where is your prayer?

Student: Tell me, please.

M. Laitman: What?

Student: Where is the prayer?

M. Laitman: If you, it's clear to you what you want to do, and in all your forces you can't do that action, then you have to ask the Creator.

Student: I will try, thank you.

Question (Revadim): (32:10) If I understand correctly, the article says that if a person doesn't watch himself, if the Creator doesn't justify about him, there's a chance he falls. So, can you explain this better how it works in the Ten? According to what I understand from the article, if a person doesn't watch himself, bringing upon himself terrible suffering, the Creator testifies upon him that he won't return to falling, then there's a chance he might fall. What does it mean that a person might fall even though the Creator testified about him that he won't fall, and how does this work in the Ten?

M. Laitman: It's as if there's a question that... There's the matter of revelation of the face. Does the Creator shine upon a person, and a person feels that on behalf of that illumination, that he is necessarily is in a repentance from fear. A person still doesn't work; it's still the Creator working. That means that the Creator testifies on a person that he won't return to folly.

Reader: Then let's continue. And in 58, he writes:

Reading: (34:37)  Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #58

58) By this we understand the words of our sages, that one who repents from fear is rewarded with his sins becoming as mistakes. We must understand how this happens. According to the above (Item 52), you can thoroughly understand that the sins one makes extend to him from the reception of a guidance of double concealment, namely concealment within concealment. This means that he does not believe in a guidance of reward and punishment.

One concealment means that he believes in a guidance of reward and punishment, but because of the accumulation of the suffering, he sometimes comes to thoughts of transgression. This is because although he believes that the suffering came to him as a punishment, he is still as one who sees his friend from behind, and might doubt and mistake him for another, as written there, that these sins are only mistakes, since in general, he believes in a guidance of reward and punishment.

Question (W Turkiye): (36:29) In the work in the Ten, what is a person afraid of when performing repentance from fear?

M. Laitman: That he won't be able to rise to the degree of the commandment to make sure his action will resemble the Creator.

Question (Kyiv 3): (37:28) This state, where the One who knows mysteries testifies about a person, that's not the end of correction yet?

M. Laitman: No.

Student: So what is that stage on the path when a person advances from ascent to ascent?

M. Laitman: He comes closer to the state where he is completely…, where he feels that he's in the Creator. That's called that He testifies about him that he won't return to folly.

Student: I thought the greatest falls are right before the final correction, as we heard about Bala Shem Tov, or Shimon from the market. The biggest falls, the greatest descents come right before the end of correction, but it seems here that there's a state where you go from ascent to ascent, no descents. Is that before the end of correction? Where is that stage in our work?

M. Laitman: If so, let's start from the beginning. Where do you start from? From wanting to come close to the Creator, in order to draw the Creator into his life, in order to not disconnect from it, and to constantly be in adhesion with that state. So, what should I do for that? He has to feel the states, and from them to choose certain states where he can ascend towards the Creator, and by that to strengthen, to grasp onto the Creator. That is what we call that he, how should I say it, that He wants to testify about him.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (40:38) It's still not clear. If the Creator testifies about him that he won't return to folly, that he won't sin, why is that not the end of the correction? The Creator testifies about him that he will never sin. What's missing? His connected, face-to-face adhesion.

M. Laitman: I guess, there are still things that you don't have an answer yet.

Student: What does the Creator testify about exactly?

M. Laitman: That he won't sin.

Student: So, from here on out, he will never sin. So, why isn't that the conclusion of the correction?

M. Laitman: But a person is still left with a few pieces of information that upon them, the repentance still isn't working, still isn't clarified. And that he's still lacking.

Question (Qazaqstan-Kyrgyzstan): (42:37) What am I basing myself on if I want to reach that state? What kind of emotions do I lean on to find that state of adhesion with the Creator?

M. Laitman: What you went through, you have reached the state where you have a certain part of the path already. That as he says, He testifies about him, meaning it's already promised to you that you will be on that state, that's the first thing.

Question (French): (44:02) Here, he says that the person has this providence of reward and punishment, but he still sins. So what is he missing in order to completely stop sinning?

Student: Baal HaSulam writes that that person found the providence of reward and punishment, but he still sins. So, what is he missing in order to stop sinning and start advancing? He still sins, although having the providence of reward and punishment. So how does he stop sinning?

M. Laitman: That's clear. So, what do you need to do?

Reader: Perhaps we can continue reading. I think he explains this further.

Reading: (45:44) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #59

59) Hence, when one is granted repentance from fear, meaning a clear attainment of reward and punishment until he is certain that he will not sin, the concealment within concealment is entirely corrected in him. This is because now he evidently sees that there is a guidance of reward and punishment. It is clear to him that all the suffering he ever felt was a punishment from His Providence for the sins he had committed. In retrospect, he made a grave mistake; hence, he uproots these sins.

However, this is not entirely so. Rather, they become mistakes, similar to the transgressions he committed in one concealment, when he failed due to the confusion that came to him through the multitude of torments that drive one out of one’s mind. These are only regarded as mistakes.

M. Laitman: So, here he's saying he's going through the states that a person goes through.

Reader: Item 60.

Reading: (47:17) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #60

60) Yet, in this repentance, he did not correct at all the first concealment of the face, which he had had before, but only from now on after he has been granted the revelation of the face. In the past, however, before he was rewarded with repentance, the concealment of the face and all the mistakes remained as they were, without any change or correction whatsoever, since then, too, he believed that the troubles and suffering came to him as a punishment, as it is written, “they will say in that day: Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?”

Question (Ashkelon 2): (48:25) Tell me please the issue of above reason. A person will never sin again. Does that mean he will never fall from the state of above reason? Can you say that?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, the sin being talked about here, when a person sins even though the Creator testifies that he will never return to folly, does it mean that he will receive this ability to always go above reason, permanently?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (49:30) We know that the fear is the fear that one might not be able to bestow contentment upon the Creator. So why does he say here that the fear is the fear of the punishments that extend from the transgressions?

M. Laitman: Read that whole part.

Reading: (49:58) However, in the end, these repentance and certainty are only because of the fear of punishment that extends from the transgressions.

Student: But we know that our punishment is that we will not be able to bestow contentment upon the Creator. But here he writes that the punishment comes from the sins.

M. Laitman: Where do you take it from that by the punishment we give Him contentment?

Student: So what he's saying is something else. It says that we learned that fear is the fear that one will not be able to bestow contentment upon the Creator. But here, Baal HaSulam says that the fear is of the punishments that extend from the transgressions. So, what is the fear from? The fear of punishments, or the fear that one might not be able to bestow contentment upon the Creator? What should a person fear? Last question.

M. Laitman: A person should have fear. Well, we're kind of far from it right now, but... he should be in attainment of reward and punishment on that degree, in a way that it all comes from the concealment.
