Rosh HaShanah – Selected Excerpts from the Sources

Reader: Hello, we are learning from excerpts of Kabbalists on the Topic of Rosh HaShanah. We are in the chapter called, One Bundle, Excerpt No. 16, by Rabash.

Reading: (00:18) 16. RABASH, Letter No. 34

It is said in the Rosh Hashanah prayer [Hebrew New Year’s Eve service], “And they shall all become one society.” In that state, it will be easier “To do Your will wholeheartedly.”

This is so because while there is not just one society, it is difficult to work wholeheartedly. Instead, part of the heart remains for its own benefit and not for the benefit of the Creator. It is said about it in Midrash Tanhuma, “‘You stand today,’ as the day at times shines and at times darkens, so it is with you. When it is dark for you, the light of the world will shine for you, as it is said, ‘And the Lord shall be unto you an everlasting light.’ When? When you are all one society, as it is written, ‘Alive every one of you this day.’ Usually, if someone takes a pile of branches, can he break them all at once? But if taken one at a time, even a baby can break them. Similarly, you find that Israel will not be redeemed until they are all one society, as it is said, ‘In those days and at that time, says the Lord, the children of Israel shall come, they and the sons of Judah together.’ Thus, when they are united, they receive the face of Divinity.”

I presented the words of the Midrash so that you don’t think that the issue of a group, which is love of friends, relates to Hassidism. Rather, it is the teaching of our sages who saw how necessary was the uniting of hearts into a single group for the reception of the face of Divinity.

M. Laitman: Yes, this is what Rabash writes in his letter. Questions?

Reader: (02:45) What does it mean, to work with the whole heart? There's always a part that is for my own benefit.

M. Laitman: That's exactly it, to be above the will to receive to oneself.

Reader: What does it mean with the whole heart?

M. Laitman: That all of the person's desires, all his passions, his tendencies, they will all be only for the benefit of the Creator. To discover the Creator's desire and to implement it from the bottom of your heart.

Reader:  What is a society, a bundle? Toward what are we bundled?

M. Laitman: We need to be connected, as one man with one heart; that it's like one person out of all of us.

Reader: What connects us?

M. Laitman: What connects us? The upper light, the force of the Creator – that if we yearn to reach adhesion with Him, eventually, He performs that action.

Reader: We are bundled in our desires, intentions, prayers, in what are we bundled?

M. Laitman: In prayers. That's more correct to say, that's it. This way, we'll reach what we can.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (04:36) He says that when they are bundled, they receive the face of the Shechina. What does it mean to receive the face of the Shechina?

M. Laitman: We discover the Creator in His relation towards us, what He wants of us, what He is expecting from us, that's what we get. All of this is called the face of the Shechina.

Question (Kyiv 1): (05:22) You said that we reveal the Creator's will through the prayer. How, by uniting the prayers, do we reveal the desire of the Creator.

M. Laitman: We yearn, all of us, to discover Him, and that yearning connects us together into one desire, that's called, as one man with one heart. In this way, when we discover Him and come closer to Him, so we all become as one nation, as one man.

Question (Turkiye 1): (06:24) How to become one bundle? How to unite into one common prayer?

M. Laitman: Well, that's our work, we only need to yearn for that: To be in one heart, in one desire, that is all directed towards the Creator and not to want anything but that, only to feel Him, and to yearn to Him.

Question (Haifa 3): (07:05) Being one bundle as one man with one heart reaching a state where I have no other preferences, where I don't fault, place blame, as you once told me, correct yourself and you'll see that the whole world is corrected?

M. Laitman: Yes, you could say that.

Reader:  Let's continue to the next excerpt.

Reading: (07:44) 17. Maor VaShemesh, Ki Tetze

The day of sentencing was set for Tishrey [Hebrew month] as it is a time of good will, when the Creator consented to Moses, and that will [desire] awakens upon us at this time each and every year. However, it is still a time of sentencing and one should awaken for complete Teshuva [repentance] more than on the rest of the year. The essence of Teshuva is to unite with each and every one in love and in one heart, and to work the Creator shoulder to shoulder. By this, the world of Teshuva, the world of Rachamim [mercy], and the world of Ratzon [good will] awaken. He implied this by saying, “And all are scanned in one scan.” This means that we must cling and connect to one another, and to close into one another in the heart of each one so we become one bundle to work the Creator wholeheartedly.

M. Laitman: That means that he keeps interpreting what he was speaking about before: This is how we need to be bundled, connected and what we need to think about or yearn for. That, in this purpose, we'll really be as one man with one heart and we'll all feel it.

Reading: (09:48) 18. Maor VaShemesh, Devarim

The most important is true connection and love and affection among the friends. This causes all the salvations and sweetening of judgments. When you gather together in love and friendship, by this, all the judgments are removed, sweetened with mercy, and complete mercy and disclosed Hassadim [mercy/grace] are revealed in the world by connecting.

Most important is the connection and love and affection among the friends. This causes all the salvations in sweetening of judgments when you gather together in love and friendship. By this, all the judgments are removed, sweetened with mercy, and complete mercy and disclosed Hassadim are revealed in the world by connecting.

M. Laitman: Yes, that means that in this way, as we were saying before, we reach a state that we all connect together into one desire, one intention, one action, and discover the Creator together – that's it.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (10:47) He says, in all the excerpts he talks about connecting into one bundle but in the first excerpt, we already said it's not a matter of Hassidut, meaning, pious followers. What's the difference between Hassidut and what we should do?

M. Laitman: We have to do this: When he says it's the Creator's will, He wants us to be connected as one man with one heart and in that one heart, we will discover Him. That He is the One, the Unique, and Only, that is controlling our heart and filling it – that's it.

Student: What is the matter of Hassidut, what connection is not right?

M. Laitman: Hassidut is that a person who heard that it's good to be like that. We're not accepting that opinion, we want to be in this one action, in one hug between us and the Creator.

Reader: (12:14) To continue, our society, Bnei Baruch, could it become Hassidut?

M. Laitman: Our society? I don't think so, there's always a fear about it and that it won't happen. But I think that, no, even though there is such a tendency to many people and we're not resisting it. Actually, we don't have anything against it but, still we want to be connected between us under the laws of Kabbalah from the upper law and then, we'll rise.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (13:38) Concerning one bundle, we saw in the history of Bnei Baruch in the past that we had joint activities that we took on ourselves and it helped us be together. We know the story – your story of the accident you had with several friends and it connected you and it became like a foundation for Bnei Baruch. How do we become one bundle without a blow, without some pressure? Is there such a way?

M. Laitman: Yes, we'll come closer to the Creator and we'll be able to incorporate in Him by Him pulling us and organizing us in the connection between us. And with the connection with Him in a way that this whole action will take place in the right way.

Student: What exactly are the actions we need to take in order to feel the inner pressure to be together, to be one bundle.

M. Laitman: To be in the connection between us and to yearn to connect to the Creator in order to see Him in the center of our connection.

Question (MAK 11): (15:34) We hear in Excerpt Number 17, he talks about repentance. What is the state of repentance, what do we return to?

M. Laitman: Back to the Creator, because creation – in itself – is distancing from the Creator. And repentance is the summary of all our efforts. That's why that's what we're aspiring for, yearning for.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (16:19) He says that if we unite, we will discover in the world complete mercy and revealed Hassadim, mercy or compassion. What does that mean?

M. Laitman: It means that that's what's waiting for us to discover.

Student: What is complete mercy and compassion, how is it revealed?

M. Laitman: The Creator's open relation towards us.

Student: The Creator's relation to us is open right now, but what are we going to reveal?

M. Laitman: I guess that His direct, open relation, that is aimed towards us from heart to heart, from the Creator's heart to our hearts, that's what we will discover.

Student: That it will be better in the world? That the world will change, what?

M. Laitman: What will change, will change. The main thing is that it will happen, already, and that we're going to reveal it.

Question (Beer Sheva): (17:33) It says in the beginning of excerpt seventeen that in the beginning of Tishrei, it is a time of goodwill. We know that in spirituality there is no time. What's the difference between what is written here in the excerpt from the work of a person during the rest of the year when a person wants to crown the King on all his desires?

M. Laitman: Every year, there's a special relation from the Creator towards us. We try as much as we can, as much as we understand, as much as the Creator presses on us, so we come closer to Him. In these days, which is called, Rosh HaShanah, the head of the year, it's a new change. Year comes from the word, change, Shone, Shana, Shone. It's a new change that's coming up. We're expecting the Creator to connect to us and open our hearts. And we will truly – we won't remain the way we were but we'll – feel Him in the center of our connection and we'll be open as one.

Student: Meaning to the fact that in the beginning of the year, it allows a person to—a person has a possibility to collect all the labors, the efforts, and that's the time of goodwill that the Creator shows us?

M. Laitman: You can say that, too.

Question (W Turkiye 7): (20:03) If the judgments are a result of the separation and distance between us, what common effort can we do to sweeten them?

M. Laitman: We need to try and be connected between us in order to resemble the connection to the Creator. That, He is putting it as the goal standing before us; and in this way, we'll come close to Him.

Question (Moscow 7): (21:02) If, the fact that He connects us and fills us with His force, if it depends on the Creator, what prayer should we make in order for Him to answer it?

M. Laitman: The Creator needs to bring us to such a connection where we will resemble Him. We just need to think about it, yearn for it to happen.

Question (W Spain 1): (21:54) What does it mean to open the hearts to the friends? What is this approach? What does it mean practically?

M. Laitman: That all of my desires will be directed towards a connection between us, between the friends. In this way, each and every one that will aim towards it will reach one desire that is entirely directed towards the Creator.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (22:44) I heard that you said that we have to discover the Creator's will and realize it wholeheartedly. On the other hand, everything is the Creator's will, isn't it? Everything that happens in our life is the Creator's will.

M. Laitman: Yes?

Student: Does He have a more hidden desire that we must reveal?

M. Laitman: Yes, we want to discover Him, His desire that is directed towards us, that is directed towards a connection with us – that's what we need.

Student: How do we develop sensitivity to feel Him, to discover that desire?

M. Laitman: I think that we need to discuss it more between us and even to come up with some exercises between us, – men with men, women with women – that eventually each one will be able to feel what connection is. Then in the connection between the women and the connection between the men, we will discover the Creator's desire, how we should be connected.

Student: The exercises or words we need to speak and develop between us; how do they differ from what we do now?

M. Laitman: I don't know what you're doing now, but you need to aim to be, as one man with one heart. That the desire we want to attain will be one for all of us.

Question (MAK 24): (25:12) Each degree, when the light comes, there is a state as if there is the end of correction, complete adhesion and then some euphoria comes. Then someone pushes you, kind of, and demands that you keep step, going forward. And after several such stages, you get used to it and you become even lazy and unwilling to advance. What does that mean?

M. Laitman: That's connected to you being pushed and you're not responding; you have to respond more, together, the whole group.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (26:09) It's written here that we have to gather together with love and unity and brotherhood. What does that mean? You said we can look at you for years on the screen but until we will realize it, nothing will happen.

M. Laitman: Correct. When you, between you, yearn for connection, in that connection, you'll attain a state that will be so united and strong that it will necessarily force the Creator to also reveal that connection between all of us.

Student: There's a feeling of a fog; we can easily miss the foundations on which a group of Kabbalists should be built. From your perspective, what would you wish Bnei Baruch? What should Bnei Baruch pay attention to in order to become the group of Kabbalists that our teachers wrote about—Baal HaSulam, Rabash – because nothing will come out if we only listen, theoretically?

M. Laitman: Correct. We need to connect, there is nothing else, only connection in all kinds of examples, in all kinds of forms we need to connect.

Student: I understand you cannot say concretely but, currently, in your feeling, what state are we in, in Bnei Baruch? Because you developed the year? It's a new year, the group, it's a new year, so maybe it's a summary of, maybe we need to ignite something?

M. Laitman: What I can say about our connection is that it's advancing ahead, and we're scrutinizing our individual parts more and more, its components. I hope that the connection between us will be revealed to all of us and we'll feel that we're in one desire of the Creator. That is actually what we need to discover, that's it. But to want it, each one needs to want it.

Question (W MAK 145): (29:37) When we pray for connection, can we say that we're building the middle line? And when we build that line, it will pass the Machsom?

M. Laitman: You can say that you can say so.

Question (W Haifa 5): (30:11) We're building our vessel through the connection between us, we're constantly in that state. How can we receive this light of mercy from the Creator? How can we feel it if our vessels don't even know this state?

M. Laitman: You will be ready for it, we're going toward it, it'll be okay don't worry. This whole system of connection will be revealed to you bit by bit.

Student: Do we have some kind of part that we have to perform in relation to the Creator?

M. Laitman: Connect among yourselves, connection, prayer for connection – we must do all this.

Question (Tel Aviv 1): (31:12) We're dealing with connection a lot, that's our purpose to reach connection. Is there a certain point that we're missing out on and that we don't understand? Something we need to cross and from that point we'll really be in connection? Or to just be persistent and to constantly try and connect more?

M. Laitman: We need to be ready for connection and hope that from moment to moment He will be revealed to us. Then, in the connection between us we will discover the Creator, completely and in this way, we will take the first step towards Him. After that, we will keep step by step, we will get closer to Him, consistently.

Question (W ITA): (32:53) When He says, with all your heart, what does it mean spiritually? How can we translate it into deeds in our Ten?

M. Laitman: By being connected among us in such a way that all of our desires are directed toward the Creator, will be as one desire. By being in this way, we will advance toward Him and in that desire we will feel Him.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (33:29) I wanted to ask about the connection between us: Is the connection between women like the connection between men, where the Creator is only revealed in the desire to connect between us? Or does it also depend on our desire that the men connect?

M. Laitman: Both, both.

Student: Is there a percentage, are there percentages this way, that way?

M. Laitman: No, no, no, you can't count percents, it will only put us in trouble. But what you asked is correct.

Question (W Rehovot 1): (34:19) He writes, that when you connect in love and affection between the friends, that'll bring all salvations. Why connection and affection is what sweetens? Why not – why isn't prayer enough?

M. Laitman: There should also be prayer but not only prayer because we also need to take actions. To come closer, to unite, to respect one another and, in this way, we come to being as one man with one heart.

Student: What's so special about love and affection that sweetens the judgments?

M. Laitman: Only to continue, I have nothing else to say, only to continue. Just as you are doing but we need, we must continue.

Question (Hungarian-Polish): (35:43) It's right, the essence of Teshuvah is to unite with each other. What does it mean that to unite with each other is the essence of Teshuvah?

M. Laitman: It's the inner force of connection, this is why it's written this way.

Question (Almaty): (36:30) What do I need to do in order to feel importance and uplifting of the Creator to the friends?

M. Laitman: You need to respect the friend – those qualities that exist in him – for revealing himself or opening himself up in the group. Then, you'll begin to receive from him, through him, the light of the Creator.

Student: Who gives me importance and greatness of the Creator: The Creator or my efforts, or is it a group effort?

M. Laitman: The Creator begins but you finish.

Student: The foundation is prayer, right?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: How to really make a prayer, and not that I'm crying and complaining?

M. Laitman: Think about it. Think about it all the time.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (37:50) It's written in 17, that in order to repent, we need to enter one heart. We are absorbed in one another, but it's not one towards the other but my work towards the Creator, working with my desires?

M. Laitman: It's the inner work of each of us with his desires to connect with the other and with the Creator.

Student: Closed into one another, and not everyone. What is that?

M. Laitman: That's exactly that meeting of desires.

Student: Externally, I'm going through this process of connection, but my main work is the inner calculation with the desires?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Philippines): (39:08) Regarding about the judgment to mercy: How do we experience judgments in the group and how can we, consciously, turn them into mercy through connection? How do we know that we feel judgments? In which way? And how do we turn the judgments into mercy through the connection between us?

M. Laitman: It's a force that – the force that reveals the distance between us is the force of judgment; the force that brings us closer together is the force of mercy, Rachamim. This is how we should feel these forces move closer to one and further from, away from the other.

Question (W Europe): (40:18) What is the difference or what is the link between connection and the fear of the Creator?

M. Laitman: The more we connect among us, the more we are excited by the connection with the Creator.

Student: Yes, this connection, most of the answers you give is that we need to connect. How can we begin to feel the importance of connection and how can we help the friend to feel connection?

M. Laitman: This is what we need to do: To be impressed by the work of the friends, and to appreciate them, to exalt them in our eyes.

Question (W Moscow 8): (42:09) When we say that the connection brings salvation and sweetens the judgments, it's similar to connection of a herd that is connecting for its security. How can we add a desire to give contentment to the Creator in this action, and not just prevent ourselves from punishment?

M. Laitman: We need to continue, continue, and constantly pray.

Student: We need to see the next stage: That we're doing it, no matter what, no matter which judgments.

M. Laitman: Yes, yes, yes, exactly, exactly.

Question (Moscow): (43:15) We're speaking about coming closer to the friends in Bnei Baruch. Can this closeness happen without a person coming closer to himself? By skipping over, can we connect by skipping over our inner self?

M. Laitman: This is something we don't really engage in because we could confuse one with the other.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (43:49) To implement the Creator's will, wholeheartedly, the people of Israel and people of Judah will come and connect. That happens in the group?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, in the external world, the Creator will already perform it?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes.

Question (W German): (44:27) Is there a limit to as much as you can bestow? How far do I have to go in order to bestow?

M. Laitman: There's a limit to everything but we still cannot discover it – it's still far from us.

Question (W Heb 1): (44:56) You mentioned that we need to appreciate, to value the friends. How does that help us connect?

M. Laitman: The more I appreciate the friends, by this, I open within me room for revelation of the connection between us.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (45:35) The fact that we have to be in one desire, does that mean we have to feel the same feeling?

M. Laitman: You can't compare.

Student: If a person in the Ten has to complete his role and not yearn for revelation? Or should we all reveal the same thing?

M. Laitman: No, the same thing, we can't even measure if it's the same or not. But to yearn for what is written, everyone should.

Student: That's called, being in one desire?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (ITA 4): (46:32) Our work is to pray for the friends but I, also, feel a great inner concern to the state of Israel – everything that's happening there with the wars and the soldiers. So, what's the inner work, whether together or individually, to everything that's happening in the world because I really feel sad and concerned?

M. Laitman: I didn't understand the question.

Reader: The world is isolating the state of Israel right now, and he feels a lot of sadness to the state and to the wars here, and also what's happening in Israel, itself. So, he's asking, what's the inner work, our common inner work towards what's happening in the world?

M. Laitman: I think our work should be toward our connection, and from our connection, connection among everyone, as well. And we will see how we emerge from it. And from this deep pit to a high mountain – it's still ahead of us.

Reader: How to relate to what's happening in the world now. That the world is coming and overcoming Israel in these periods.

M. Laitman: It's written that this is how it should be, it's not like we agree with it or accept it as a blessing. On the contrary, it should happen.

Student: Is it a result of a lack of our work?

M. Laitman: It's a result of our incomplete work.

Reader: So, what should we do?

M. Laitman: We must unite more among ourselves with an open heart to one another; and to draw the Creator into that connection.

Reader: And what result should we expect in the world, what should we see as a result?

M. Laitman: In the world, we should expect – all the nations of the world with their inclination to turn against us – precisely in that, they will discover an opposite deficiency. They are discovering their connection, actually, through us.

Reader: When the world overcomes Israel, what are they actually asking for? What's in their plea from within?

M. Laitman: The people of Israel?

Student: No, the nations.

M. Laitman: The nations of the world ask to have a good life without any connection between each other, without having any connection between them.

Question (W Ukraine 2): (50:28) New year, new lights. How can we receive them in order to give the Creator contentment?

M. Laitman: We should ask the Creator for the connection between us; to have such a connection that we will feel each other in the heart. So that all of us will have one common heart, everyone; and then we will rise above our situation.

Question (Turkiye 7): (51:12) Can you give us an exercise, a practical exercise, or an example for connection? Some exercise for our advancement so the whole world can implement it together?

M. Laitman: Of course I can, we must be connected first. Our entire group, in all the countries, in all the continents. We should set an example to everyone how we can unite, and when we unite, we will feel the connection between us, completely. And then in that connection, we will begin to reveal the Creator – this is what we need.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (52:27) How close are we to become one bundle so we will be able to bestow to the country and the whole world?

M. Laitman: We must feel ourselves as the center of the world. And that, we are operating in all the countries and in all the groups as a force of connection. And to be closer to the Creator – that's it, I think that's enough. If we constantly talk, think, feel that we have a strong inclination toward each other, toward our center, this should already help us establish a time of peace in the world.

Student: Are we coming closer to this goal?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Ashkelon 2): (53:52) Who are, the sons of Israel and sons of Judah, and why can't they connect in order to raise the divinity?

M. Laitman: We will learn this later, the main thing is that we will want among us, as we are used to in our Tens. We need to be closer and closer to each other.

Question (W Unity): (54:27) The state of everyone closing off in their own ego, it's the state that draws you in. Is the right result to feel the friend's desire for spirituality, or to see that the Creator, already, filled?

M. Laitman: To feel that the Creator fills all my friends with His inner light.

Student: And about the world, you said that we need to connect so the nations of the world will feel the ability to connect and they'll feel that we are giving them that ability. So, is that right, do you believe that process will be revealed?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (55:28) I understand that we discover the Creator through the connection between us, but there is a will to receive that is there disturbing. It is the first stage to see Him, first, to recognize Him first? Because sometimes we don't recognize that it's there. And I think that with the studies, we recognize it more and more. What should we do with that will to receive that's disturbing? To just ignore it?

M. Laitman: Yes, we need to rise, to rise from it, upward.

Student: To keep trying and trying to connect?

M. Laitman: Connect more and more and more above it. Although the will to receive we have pushes us apart and we must rise above it.

Student: So, once the will to receive is able to separate between us, to separate me from the friends, this is where I fall?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (W Spa): (57:02) How can we get a complete repentance in order to rise this Rosh HaShanah?

M. Laitman: Together, together, this is what you're missing. When we turn to the Creator, we mustn't be as one or as two, but as the whole group of men, the whole group of women, and even between them, some connections. This is how we, if this is how we turn to the Creator, we will be answered, rewarded.

Reader: (57:43) When we in the Ten are asking to reach one desire, while discovering different desires of the friends in the Ten, how should we work? Should we make efforts to unite all of our desires into one common desire to the Creator or not? Or not to make such an effort because it's artificial and just to pray to the Creator to connect us?

M. Laitman: No. To nevertheless connect the desires between us so it'll be one big desire toward the Creator.

Reader: What is this action that we're trying to connect our desires?

M. Laitman: We connect all our desires into one desire.

Reader: So, we in our Ten have to reach one common desire, one prayer to the Creator?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Reader: And the whole Ten has to reach it?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Reader: So, where do our prayers connect into one group, one group?

M. Laitman: In the place where we aim them, in the Creator.

Reader: When you said during the lesson that there has to be a connection between men and between women – maybe later on a bigger connection between those two groups. What is this connection between the men? The men in the Ten, the men in the world?

M. Laitman: Among the men, wherever, wherever.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (59:24) How can we focus in this hour directly into connection without fake engagements, what are those?

M. Laitman: Yes, we need to try to do this.

Student: Can I recognize what the artificial actions are?

M. Laitman: Try to talk to the friends, they might help me.

Question (Latin 4): (01:00:11) How to pay attention to a state of spiritual poorness. That's what will bring us to a true prayer, which will connect us to the Shechina even though we're egoists. So, how to remain that state as being poor in spirituality?

M. Laitman: Only to be connected.

Reader: (01:00:42) Maybe in a sentence. How can you summarize Rosh HaShanah?

M. Laitman: Rosh HaShanah is the summary of the summation of the raising of our prayers from between us to the Creator, and together with Him, to rise to the highest place. I hope we will succeed in this and as a result of what we're going through, now on Rosh HaShanah, we will be rewarded with connection and revelation of the Creator to us and to the whole world.

Reader: Amen. Thank you, Rav, for the summary and for the lesson. And now we're going to go to summarizing the lesson of what we heard. Let's talk about it in a tense, and then go to the next part.
