Part 1: Recorded Lesson October 26, 2021. Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha

Reader: Hello, friends. In the first part of the lesson, we will watch a recorded lesson from July 26th, 2025. Sorry, October 26th, 2021. My bad. This is on Shamati 35 “Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha.” You can find the article on kabbalahmedia.info, as well as through the Arvut platform study materials tab. Shamati 35 “Concerning the vitality of Kedusha.”

Reader: Hello, we are studying from the Shamati articles. Today, we will start with article number 35 “Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha.” You can find the study materials on our sites or on the Arvut system. You can find it up on the study materials button. You can send questions there. Pertinent questions will be aired during the lesson.

M. Laitman: The articles of Shamati contain several types of articles, not in and of themselves, we can't say, because in and of themselves this is truly the upper light. But in terms of how we perceive it, how we absorb it, how we sense it, how it enters us, and permeates, and works within us. So, one of the articles that we can't really get an impression from, I see this typically from my experience with the students, this article we're going to read now “Concerning the vitality of Kedusha,” article 35 of Shamati. So, this is one of those articles that is not immediately grasped, but we then begin to see it more and more in depth. And that's about the article itself, the content of the article. The content is very important. We usually dismiss the states that are opposite to Kedusha. When I'm in a descent, fall, so in my feeling, I'm willing to just give up these states. Why do I need them? I feel bad, my mind's not working, the emotion is also kind of turned off, and then, what do I get out of it that I'm in a state of descent. So, all the states we should understand, all the states that are opposite to Kedusha, to bestowal, to coming closer to the Creator, they too accumulate to our work, to our effort as we progress towards the goal. And it turns out that even the Klipa that we so curse, and dislike, and despise, and are willing to let go of, to dismiss it works for the Kedusha. And as it says, “He shall swallow down riches and shall vomit them up.” We talked about it. Or the example of the wheel, how it goes backwards, but it actually pushes the wheel forwards. And so, that's how we advance. Where half of the motion forward happens by motion that goes backwards. And without that motion backwards, you're not going to have any motion forwards. So, on the contrary, everything begins from darkness. Darkness and light, night and day.

That's how we count our days according to Kabbalah. Meaning, that the day begins from the night. There shall be evening, there shall be morning, and they are one day. And we should understand this matter of how our states, being so terrible sometimes, and we just want to run away from everything, we hate it because of our will to receive. We dislike these states. But the truth is that these states, in their essence they are correct states and positive states. And they join the Kedusha. And only thanks to them we can enter spirituality and recognition of the Creator, knowing the Creator. This is basically what the article is about, “Concerning the vitality of Kedushah.” Now, please.

Reading: (06:01) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha

I heard in 1945, Jerusalem

The verse says (Psalms 104): “There is the sea, great and broad, in which are swarms without number, small animals with big ones.”

We should interpret:

  1. “There is the sea” means the sea of the Sitra Achra [other side].

  1. “Great and broad” means that it manifests itself and shouts “Give! Give!” referring to big vessels of reception.

  1. “In which are swarms” means that there are upper lights there, which one steps and tramples with one’s feet.

  1. “Without number,” that there are small with large animals, meaning whether one has small vitality or big vitality, it is all in that sea.

This is so because there is a rule that “From above they give giving, and take, they do not take” (as all that is given from above is not received in return, but stays below). Hence, if one extends something from above and then blemishes it, it remains below, but not with the person. Instead, it falls to the sea of the Sitra Achra.

In other words, if one extends some illumination and cannot sustain it permanently because his Kelim [vessels] are not yet clean to be fit for the light, meaning that he will receive it in vessels of bestowal like the light that comes from the Giver, the illumination must depart from him.

M. Laitman: Meaning, we see here that anything that we receive from above, and at first it can be somewhat in the direction of bestowal, and then we transform it in order to receive, and we feel that it's in order to receive, but it doesn't matter, even though it's in order to receive and it goes to the Klipa, meaning that we want to enjoy it, to enjoy it ourselves. But that's how we are deliberately being played from above. And so, we then have to realize that this illumination that we perhaps received first with a good intention,

but then it was broken, so even though it all moves to the side of the Klipa, it still remains and then comes to correction.

Question (Kiev 1): (09:52) I wanted to ask, he writes here in the article that he's not capable of sustaining this state permanently because his vessels are not clean enough. How can you receive an illumination if your vessels are not clean enough?

M. Laitman: According to his desire, the way he is he wants to enter spirituality, wants to be in order to bestow, to move to a spiritual degree. And according to his desire, according to his draw, his attraction, then he receives some contact with it. And then, as a result of that contact he begins to feel that it's coming closer to something, and he is not even aware that his intention is shifting. He begins to think about how he can enjoy this, and how he was drawn to bestowal is now going into his vessels of reception. We're not even so aware of it, but the process should be understood to you.

Question (Moscow 3): (11:17) What does it mean that he's stepping with his feet on it?

M. Laitman: That he's no longer interested in bestowing but only in knowing, feeling, getting. Not to bestow by that, to have contact with spirituality. Not interested in receiving the force of bestowal, and love of others, and so on, but rather he's interested in feeling it and enjoying it himself.

Reading: (11:50) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha

At that time, this illumination falls into the hands of the Sitra Achra. This continues several times, meaning that one extends, and then it departs from him.

Hence, the illuminations increase in the sea of the Sitra Achra until the cup is full.

M. Laitman: Until this ocean is filled. Years pass, and some exertions, and labor, and descents, and everything accumulates somewhere.

Reading: (12:33) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha

This means that after one reveals the full measure of the effort that one can reveal, the Sitra Achra gives him back everything she took into her own authority. This is the meaning of “He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again.”

M. Laitman: That's important. Again.

Reader: And again.
Reading:
This means that after one reveals the full measure of the effort that one can reveal, the Sitra Achra gives him back everything she took into her own authority. This is the meaning of “He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again.”

Reader: Again.

Reading: Hence, the illuminations increase in the sea of the Sitra Achra until the cup is full. This means that after one reveals the full measure of the effort that one can reveal, the Sitra Achra gives him back everything she took into her own authority. This is the meaning of “He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again.”

Question (Moscow 1): (13:47) Can the process of vomiting repeat again?

M. Laitman: No, this is about later. We get a little bit of illumination from it, but really, everything that accumulates in the sea of the Sitra Achra appears later. We'll see soon how he talks about it. It's only after we shift to Lishma.

Question (Latin 7): (14:38) A friend is asking, how does a person know that he's come to the end, to the limit of his efforts, that he's performed all the efforts that he could do?

M. Laitman: The limit of the efforts? Ein Sof. It's in the infinity, the final correction. What's the limit of the efforts?

Student: He's saying, well, he's done all his efforts, and then it's been swallowed and vomited out.

M. Laitman: That when it happens he doesn't know. It depends on the size of his soul, and the greater the soul, the longer the path. And he has to work a lot in concealment, and it takes years and years until he understands, and feels, and collects all of his effort in the Klipa until it transforms, flips to Kedusha. It's like the allegory about the person who goes to the king's treasure with a little vessel to take coins. So, he takes a little bit, and then he has to pour it, and then he takes a little bit more, and he has to pour it again, and he thinks he's losing it each time, that it's not his. That's what we feel through the descents. In the ascents, we feel like we're getting something, and it's good, and then in the descents, we lose it. And that's the example that the Klipa actually helps us in completing the circle of the wheel, that half of it goes backwards, and the other half goes forwards, but the part that goes backwards completes the movement forwards.

Question (USA Northeast): (16:42) I hope that the question is appropriate for what we're going over. The question is, when we feel the expansion of the ego and the will to receive herself, what are we feeling it against or in contrast to?

M. Laitman: It's corresponding to the expansion. It's the expansion of our vessels, after all. One who's greater than his friend, his inclination is greater than himself. It indicates progress. The distance of the vessels indicates progress as well. Yes, the only question is, do we remain in the same direction forward? So, it's like, let's say I'm doing sports. So, the more I advance, the more I'm given more difficult exercises each time. But there, I understand that I need to take it upon myself more and more, and do more and more because without it, there's no progress. Same here, except I don't see the process. So, each time I receive the hardening of the heart, I think I'm falling, but I'm not falling. It's that I'm given more exercises. And of course, in all these exercises, I lose as much as I want to advance, to connect myself to the group, to pray to the Creator, do whatever needed. I see that I still fall, and fall, and fall. And then it says, a thousand go into the room and one goes out to teach, to the light, that is. Meaning, a lot of people leave the wisdom of Kabbalah because of that, because they don't grasp, they don't understand that specifically through the darkness which amplifies, and until it encompasses us from all directions, then from the bottom, I call upon the Lord, meaning then we can cry out to the Creator, and it's a cumulative cry, and then we cross the barrier. It's the only way. It's a very long path to reach a state where we necessitate ourselves, and the Creator, and all forces of nature really, to transform this whole Klipa, this shell, this whole labor that has accumulated in negative states, where we feel that we are unsuccessful in every sense. So, this whole sea of Sitra Achra, where all our exertions and efforts are drowning. So specifically from all these efforts, we then receive them and rise to Kedusha by them. That's what we need to understand. Because many people who don't understand this technology, this process of advancement, they think that they're incapable, they can't, this path is not for them, and so on. But the truth is, it's not so. Rather, all our efforts must enter that sea of the Sitra Achra, meaning in order to receive our ego, and by that our ego grows more and more. We become more egoistic, as well as being drawn to bestowal, to connection. As if we discover in parallel that we are more coarse, more egoistic. Until we fill the cup, the quota, and then it opens up. We're going to read a bit more and then answer a few questions.

Student: Just one question to follow behind it. So, when we feel the sensation between both the will to receive for self, and I guess the force of bestowal coming from the center of the Ten, where are we in that sensation?

M. Laitman: We are within this sensation, I guess. What can I say about it? What's the sensation? You experience it. You're in it. You're consumed by it.

Question (German 4): (22:01) Also, the Klipa works for the holiness, you said. How can one strengthen the faith in one's good intentions?

M. Laitman: We'll learn that. That's next.

Question (Baltia 3): (22:24) There are different states in the group, where it seems to you like you have a yearning and intention, and there're the states where you have only action.

M. Laitman: We are now studying the article. That's it. Done. I don't want to hear more. Don't you see that you're confusing everyone with these questions? We just read a few lines, and already throwing questions that some are completely unrelated. Be a bit more patient, and then you'll hear what we're learning and not what you want to ask. Otherwise, you'll be missing the article, and then you'll have the same old questions, and it will just remain that way. That's it. So, erase all the questions now, and listen to the article, because you're not asking according to what we're studying. You have what you want, and we need to listen to what Baal HaSulam says.

Reading:
(23:35) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha

It follows that all that the Sitra Achra received into her own authority was only as a deposit, meaning that as long as she has control over man, and the matter of the control that she has is so that one will be able to scrutinize one’s vessels of reception and admit them into Kedusha [holiness].

In other words, had she not controlled a person, he would settle for little. Then all of one’s vessels of reception would remain separated,

M. Laitman: Understood? You should write down questions next to this, learn how to work with the text, and then ask. Next, meaning what the Sitra Achra receives from our descent, from all our disappointments, all our troubles, it all remains in it, but it remains as a deposit. And then all those deposits that she accumulates later join our progress to Kaddusha.

Reading:
and he would never be able to gather all the Kelim that belong to the root of his soul, admit them into Kedusha, and extend the light that belongs to him.

M. Laitman: If not for this work of the Klipot, the Sitra Achra.

Reading:
(25:41) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha

Hence, it is a correction that each time one extends something and has a descent,

M. Laitman: And after he receives something, there is a descent.

Reading:
he must start anew, meaning new scrutinies. And what one had from the past has fallen into the Sitra Achra, who holds it in her authority as a deposit. Afterward, one receives from her everything that she received from him the whole time.

M. Laitman: Is it clear how it works? It's really a clear answer to all of our descents. These descents join the ascents, and without it working this way, we cannot advance to in order to bestow. Meaning, we have to see ourselves as unable to advance alone to anything. We have no strength, no power, no mind, no vessels, desires, nothing. But bit by bit, this despair accumulates until we are willing to nullify before the upper force, the Creator, and then when we truly want in order to bestow above this nullification where we realize that we can't do anything on our own, then it's like this example where we go into the king's treasure and use a cup to take all the coins. After we've despaired, we saw that we can't do anything like that, then we are told, “here is what you've been filling and emptying all the time. It's all yours.” And that's how we work. Why does it happen like that? So that we fall into despair from the work that is in order to receive and decide that there's no way to work in order to receive but only in order to bestow. And in order to bestow, we don't receive anything. It's all for the benefit of the Creator. And then we see that this is the correct and desired work. And that takes us to a resolution. Next.

Reading:
(28:45) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha Yet, we must also know that if one could sustain any illumination, even a small one, but if it were permanent, he would already be regarded as whole. That is, one would have been able to advance with this illumination. Hence, if one loses the illumination, he should regret it.

M. Laitman: And this sorrow, that he's sorry about it, and the illumination that departs, it all connects to him but as posterior, Achoraim, meaning he receives it afterwards. But this is how it accumulates next to him, without him knowing and seeing, so as to not disturb his work, because otherwise it would ruin his progress, his yearning, his desire to achieve something. So, the more he advances, he advances in feeling that he has nothing, more and more and more. The darkness becomes darker and darker, as it says that the deepest darkness is before sunrise. That's how it is also in our nature. Okay. Next.

Reading:
(30:40) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha  This is similar to a person who placed a seed in the ground so that a big tree would grow out of it, but took the seed out of the ground right away. Thus, what is the benefit in the work of putting the seed in the ground?

Moreover, we can say that he not only took out the seed from the ground and spoiled it; we can say that he dug out a tree with ripe fruits from the ground and spoiled them.

M. Laitman: If a person relates incorrectly now to his progress as well, then he's not putting the seed in the ground, meaning he doesn't know, He doesn't understand, he doesn't pay attention that whatever he got in one moment and it fell to the Sitra Achhra, he doesn't relate to it as putting it in the ground so that something will later grow. He doesn't pay attention to that, and by that, he just cancels the work that can bear fruit in the future.

Reading:
(32:10) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha  It is the same here: If he had not lost this tiny illumination, a great light would have grown out of it. It follows that it is not necessarily that he lost the power of a small illumination, but it is as though a great light indeed was lost from him.

It follows that it is not necessarily that He lost the power of a small illumination, but it is as though a great light indeed was lost from Him.

Question (ITA 4): (32:48) When we fall into a descent, we descend into the intention in order to receive, right?

M. Laitman: That is right, because you begin anew at some point.

Student: So, all that work falls to the Sitra Achra and to the preparation of the next degree, right?

M. Laitman: All the work you've been through, everything you went through, there's no absence in the spiritual whether it's negative or positive, even though we discuss it according to our feeling. But regardless of our feeling, each and every spiritual state remains. And it remains thanks to the Klipa. That's what the Creator created, a place to accumulate, to collect all our efforts so as to gradually advance us towards the true bestowal in order to bestow.

Question (Beer Sheva): (34:36) What to correct? How to correct? I don't understand.

M. Laitman: That is not a question, I'm sorry. That's not how you ask in a lesson. In the lesson, you ask according to what we learned, according to what we just read.

Student: You have to add every day, and you have to join something to do from the Ten inside the group, something needs to be done to do advancement towards spirituality in the mutual work. But it doesn't come out. I don't know how to do this. So, what am I missing to correct inside of me? And no, because this is personal work. I don't know how to do it and how to approach all these problems. That's my question.

M. Laitman: It's not just your question. This is what many of our friends are asking, and that's what we're clarifying. Keep listening, and we'll see later at the end of the article what else can we add to the answer. In the meantime, read. In general, to understand the article, you have to read it at least several times. You know how many times I read it? Maybe, I don't know, 30 times. And after the fifth, or sixth, or seventh time, I began to suddenly get what's going on, what it's talking about, what it wants from us. The article is not difficult, but it does need to rearrange our relation. And that's what I started discussing. A new attitude to the descents, to the darkness, to our ego, to everything we call the Sitra Achra, that these things are for our own good, to advance us towards the Lishma, in order to bestow. Without that system of Klipa, we won't advance. The Creator created it. He says, “I created the evil inclination.” It's a necessary thing. Without us working this way and discovering that it's in order to receive and then trying again and falling again, like a little kid that's to do something and it breaks, or he falls, or something else happens, and so on, and by that we grow. There's no other choice. That's how everything works. That's the only way. So, in spiritual work, too, we have to understand that our game is coming to the level of the Creator. We have to try, and then it breaks. We have to try, and then it breaks again, until we come to the final state. And only the final state stays eternally. All the other states fall into the sea of the Klipa, our ego, and they are kept there, and later they arise. This is what's called that they arise in the final correction. This is the great Zivug, the coupling that happens in the final correction where all our disappointments, and despair, and dissents, and whatever we thought about ourselves being wrong, and doing wrong, and being filthy, and with having bad desires, and thoughts, and all the lies, and deceit in everyone, and so on. All of those things, they achieve corrections by great light that appears in the final correction. But it appears, oh, and we don't fall into despair, but like little kids, we try again, and again, and new.

Question (Holland 1): (38:53) When we read this article, and we receive some vitality from it, but at the same time, we feel that this vitality is straight going to this vitality of reception. How should I value this transition?

M. Laitman: You need to be above all those sensations, feelings. Enter the Klipa once again. What I learned? Very well, but it's protected there, it's kept there, and I continue with my efforts, and each moment anew. Just as it's written, “it should be as new in your eyes.” That's the main thing.

Question (Moscow 4): (39:59) Turns out that in the sea of the Sitra Achra, all my efforts, the individual efforts fall in there, and then comes the crossing of the barrier. But the Creator is in the Ten. And what about all the rest of the friends?

M. Laitman: Don't worry. You won't cross the Machsom before you connect with your friends. We don't cross the Makhsum alone. The Machsom, the barrier, is called the boundary after which holiness begins. Holiness can illuminate only in a whole vessel. A whole vessel is where there's a Ten, well, not a Ten, six, no matter how many, but that are connected together, where each annulled himself before the others, somewhat to the level of the barrier of the Machsom, and then you cross the Machsom. Clear?

Question (Florida): (41:02) How do we recognize the illumination, and then how do we hold on to it?

M. Laitman: We just need to yearn forward, ahead. We can't measure the illumination, preserve it, keep it, give it back. We just need to yearn for an intensified connection with the friends and towards the Creator, to constantly say to myself, this is how I'm working, and slowly, slowly, I will start to feel in this some attraction, some illumination, some awakening that arrives, I don't even know from where, but I need to constantly push myself towards that.

Reader: We will continue with a recorded lesson from the 10th of July, 2006, Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah, item 67, Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah, item 67.
