Can Love of Pets Be Applied to People?

Why have pets become man's best friend? It's natural because we're also animals. Although Adam (“human” in Hebrew) comes from the Hebrew word Domeh [to be similar to the Creator], which is the force of connection, bestowal, and love of another as yourself, we don't have that similarity yet. So we go down to the animal level where we don't really care about others, but we have an animal at home and we love it and it loves us. So we found for ourselves a friend and a partner, a loved one. There is a feeling that it is easier for us to talk to our pets and to be in a relationship with animals than with other people, because we understand each other. It's very easy for us to understand the animal because they're open. We know them, see them, and feel that they relate to us on the level that we relate to them. We have nothing to hide from each other. We don't want to take advantage of each other. They feel our mood, and therefore, everything is fine. As animal lovers, we can learn from our attitude toward animals something about the attitudes we should activate in human society. If we aim to apply similar attitudes toward people as we have toward our pets at home, then as we treat our pets positively, favorably and pleasantly, we could do so toward all people, and thus feel how we upgrade human relations and experience a much better life. We demand nothing of, say, dogs, because they treat us the way that we treat them. We thus have to treat people similarly, that they understand our attitude, that they have to relate in return similarly, as it is written, “I am for my beloved, and my beloved is for me,” and by doing so, we become friends. We connect above our egoistic nature, mutually with one another, and we start treating each other favorably, and even don’t mind if the friend doesn’t return that attitude sometimes. We then live according to what is written, “Love covers all crimes,” and relate to others even more so, up to the point where it forces them to treat us favorably as well. This is how we increase the love between us all the time, and each shows the other an example for positive relations. With animals, we don’t have such a game. What is the potential of love toward your pet versus the potential of love toward other people? With an animal, it is limited because we see everything with an animal, and this is what we like about it. We don't have to expect the animal to suddenly not love us. The animal won’t sell out to anyone else, it’s always a friend. Whereas with people, we have to work on it. We don't know what's going to happen the next moment. Therefore, we have to reach the degree of absolute love, so that we, by our behavior, force the friend to necessarily treat us the same way.
