Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #53

Reader: Hello, we are reading from “The Introduction to the Study of Ten Sefirot”  from Baal HaSulam. We are continuing with item 53. Before that, we will say that today, starting in the afternoon, Israel time, we have Unity Day in the topic of strengthening the foundations, the fundamentals of the society. We see many groups that are gathering, like Chile and Sochi and Almaty, and others that we see here, Vilna and Vilnius and Germany. There are other groups that have gathered from the afternoon so that we will connect together. We will have a gathering of friends, a lesson, a meal, and a cultural evening. So this is going to happen during the day.

And now we will start. We are continuing the topic, “Introduction to the Study of the Ten Sefirot,” item 53.

Reading: (01:13) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #53

53) We must know that the whole matter of the work in keeping Torah and Mitzvot by way of choice applies primarily to the two aforementioned discernments of concealed Providence. Ben He He says about that time (Avot, Chapter 5): “The reward is according to the pain.”

Since His Guidance is not revealed, it is impossible to see Him but only in concealment of the face, from behind, as one who sees one’s friend from behind and might doubt and think he is another. In this manner, one is always left with the choice whether to keep His will or breach it. This is because the troubles and pains he suffers make him doubt the reality of His guidance over His creations, whether in the first manner, which are the mistakes, or in the second manner, which are the sins.

In any case, one is still in great pain and labor. The writing says about this time, “All that your hand finds to do by your strength, that do” (Ecclesiastes 9). This is so because he will not be granted the revelation of the face, the complete measure of His goodness, before he exerts and does whatever is in his power to do, and the reward is according to the pain.

M. Laitman: That means that we can see that each and every person has freedom of choice to believe that he's under the providence of the upper force, and that he must exert specifically to open up for himself this relation between the Creator and the created beings, and to try in all his forces to bring the Creator's relation closer to him in a way that the Creator's relation to him will be revealed.

Question (Moscow): (05:01) For instance, when the greatest Kabbalists had concealment, they were in a state where they forget everything or like Rav Shimon from the marketplace, it's also a kind of acknowledgement of providence?

M. Laitman: Suppose so.

Question (Kyiv ): (05:33) What does it mean to reveal the Creator's attitude to me? How can I influence that? I understand how I change my relation, but what about His relation?

M. Laitman: His relation towards you, that you have to bring yourself to a state where it's clear to you what the Creator wants of you, and that you want to keep His relation towards you.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (06:20) What does it mean that a person has free choice to have faith that he's under the rulership of the upper force? What is this action to have faith that he's under the guidance of the upper force?

M. Laitman: That a person in any state, whatever it will be, he could say that he is under the influence of the upper force, and that it's in his hands, the forces, the possibilities, the opportunities to organize the Creator's relation towards him that it will be clear what the Creator wants from him. Then the end of the matter is that he says,  that the complete measure of his guidance is that he tries to do everything he possibly could. Meaning? Meaning that there’s a possibility here to enter such a connection with the Creator, that a person isn't left with any doubt of the state that he's in with the Creator.

Question (Latin 11): (09:00) When a person is searching with longing for the Creator  but he doesn't find Him, is that considered sorrow?

M. Laitman: Is it what?

Student: Is it considered sorrow?

M. Laitman: Oh, sorrow. It's according to what a person feels. Of course, that if a person searches for contact with the Creator, he doesn't find it, so he's in sorrow, or in a search. Still, how can he reach a revealed contact with the Creator?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (10:02) What's the benefit of doubt?

M. Laitman: The benefit from doubt?

Student: Yes, he writes that the sorrows and pains that a person receives brings him doubt in the Creator's providence over the created beings. The question is, what's the benefit of the doubt? What a person gains from having doubts?

M. Laitman: That he searches how he could complete the doubts.

Student: It's impossible to search without the doubts?

M. Laitman: So, what are you searching for?

Student: We're searching for the connection, the adhesion.

M. Laitman: So, that means you need to have a question mark. What are you engaging in? What do you want to reveal? And what could be that future state that you'll feel that you're in revelation of the state?

Student: But why is it called doubt? Doubt seems to be a place where something's missing. What's missing there?

M. Laitman: You're missing a revelation of the Creator.

Student: So, every place where there's no revelation of the Creator is a place of doubt?

M. Laitman: No. You can't say that.

Student: So, what's doubt again?

M. Laitman: Doubt is when a person wants to reveal the presence of the Creator in the state he's in, and he still can't reveal it.

Question (Baltia 3): (12:26) How to build the shape of the Creator? Where do we take examples?

M. Laitman: From what we're in. We are studying the wisdom of Kabbalah. It's a wisdom that reveals to us the presence of the Creator in our world. That's what we have to be in all the time, to be in this search. Where is that Creator? In what form does He exist? In what relation is He relating to us? And more and more. In a way that we don't let go of this direct approach between us and the Creator and from the Creator to us, until we discover our relationships with Him in a way, in a direct and clear manner. That's it.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (14:04) How can the Ten build the image of the Creator so that there's no more concealment, and the Creator is revealed? How to build the image of the Creator in the Ten?

M. Laitman: We are gradually going from concealment to revelation, more and more in all kinds of ways, and gradually it formulates in us more and more until we begin, so we start resembling to what's before us. What is the Creator, in what form, in what qualities He's relating to us, and in which qualities we can relate back to Him? Until it becomes clear to everyone that we are before the Creator, and He is before us.

Question (Sochi): (16:01) We in Sochi have gathered with about 60 people here, and the question is, as long as a person didn't make all the efforts he can, so we cannot say he has faith in the Creator?

M. Laitman: Correct. We can measure the measure of faith on behalf of a person only according to as much as he invests forces in that search for the Creator, in the state of concealment.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (16:58) It says here that man always has choice whether to carry out the Creator's will or, God forbid, transgress over His will. What is the Creator's will?

M. Laitman: The Creator's will is that we reveal Him.

Student: In regards to the concealment here?

M. Laitman: That's in relation to the concealment, of course. That's the way it is. The Creator wants to be revealed towards the created beings, that they will discover Him as the Good That Does Good to the wicked and the good, and None Else Besides Him, and so on.

Question (Hungarian-Polish): (17:55) What does it mean the reward is according to the pain in our work?

Student: It says here that according to sorrow is the reward. So, the friend is asking, what does it mean that in accordance to the suffering and sorrow is the reward?

M. Laitman: If we can't reveal the Creator, so he is revealed through suffering, but if we try still to reveal Him with His face towards us, so that's how we reveal.

Question (W MAK): (18:56) What does it mean that we reveal the Creator in the friends?

M. Laitman: It means that according to my relation towards the Creator, I discover my conditions, my attraction to the way I want to reveal the Creator.

Student: I wanted to ask, I am looking for this friend? Who is the friend that I keep looking for, that I want to embrace, to hug, to speak to all the time?

M. Laitman: Yes, that's the Creator.

Student: I need to search for these friends all the time?

M. Laitman: You must want to reveal the Creator, like a great friend of yours. That before Him you can be completely revealed, as we say face to face, and not to conceal anything from Him, but only to want that all the sufferings and concealments will all be revealed.

Question (Berlin): (21:31) Hello everyone, here in Berlin, we have gathered 30 friends. There are many gatherings for this Unity Day. Rav, it says that we need to do whatever we can. What does Rav feel that we should do in this Unity Day?

M. Laitman: In this Unity Day, you need to try and connect ourselves to one group, to feel ourselves that we must see through all the friends that you already know their faces, expressions, that you also want to feel how much you support them, and as much as they support you. And I hope that's what we're going to reach. And in the end, that's how we're going to reach revelation of the Creator to the created beings. That is our purpose.

Question(Chile Sur): (23:42) If we shift from concealment to revelation to create the image of the Creator in the Ten, then what happens in the Ten if one of the friends suddenly leaves or changes a Ten? What happens to the image of the Creator that we started building? Does it all start from scratch when a friend leaves or changes?

M. Laitman: If we discover that the Ten has a certain flaw, let's say one of the friends loses contact from him to the Ten, and that connection disappears, it's lost. So, it's not good. We already have to feel it. That's why we should feel, and hold, and hug our whole group. Let's say I see the Chile group now, right? A very special group. I’ve known them for a long time. So obviously we need to connect between us even more and more, and from the connection between us, we need to discover the Creator. And let's hope that that's how it's going to happen. We are actually close to it.

Question (W PT 23): (26:37) Following the questions about according to the reward, that the sorrow is the reward. You said we are trying to reveal the Creator face to face towards us. So, is sorrow necessary, or can we reach revelation without it as well?

M. Laitman: No. Feeling of losing connection, we need to feel that as sorrow. The feeling of attaining the connection, we need to discover as contact, as happiness with the Creator and all the friends. That's why we need to hold on to that. The main thing in spiritual work is that we grab the place, the goal, and we don't let go of it, but we're constantly working and attaining it and sustaining it in the most revealed way.

Question (Beer Sheva): (28:07) I’ll read the second paragraph if possible. There are many things there and I have some questions. Since His guidance is not revealed, it is impossible to see Him but only in concealment of the face from behind, as one who sees one's friend from behind, and might doubt and think he is another. In this manner, one is always left with the choice whether to keep His will or breach it. My question, our will to receive shows us the opposite of the Creator. Here he mentions that we receive only through His back side. So, how do we overcome this matter of receiving from the posterior to allow the Creator to be revealed between us? What's the fastest, most doable way, please?

M. Laitman: It's only through the studies and doing actions that through them, we are drawn towards one another, one another, everybody and everybody. And then we gradually discover, gradually, that we belong to that group that the Kabbalists are talking about.

Student: Is faith above reason that we try to make happen between us in the work towards Him, is that one of the ways?

M. Laitman: According to what we study, yes. It's one method, revealing the Creator in the connection between us, and no more than that.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (30:40) Actually, to resemble being like the upper one, like we read, it happens only when the providence is in concealment. The question is, what does it mean to choose to be a human, Adam, specifically in the opportunity we have in the group today? What does it mean to be Adam in a single group?

M. Laitman: I don't understand. You mean, we have a group, and this group chooses someone that he's in contact with the Creator?

Student: We want to resemble Him together.

M. Laitman: To resemble?

Student: Yes, to be Adam.

M. Laitman: That means that it'll be clear to us and revealed before us that that person, let's say, no matter who, some random person, and he is our representative towards the Creator?

Student: Yes, that we'll feel that all of us are this Adam.

M.Laitman: Wait, that that person feels that he was chosen from us to be in contact with the Creator?

Student: That each of us will be able to feel that he is this man, this Adam, and all of us together are also this Adam, that we'll feel connected between us, that we're longing for Him, we want to resemble Him. Not just as feeling a force of connection, but that we wish to act like Him, resemble Him. How can all of us as a group feel as one man towards the Creator?

M. Laitman: Not exactly that. In the group, we want to be an image, to see the image, that that image is… it'll be as an example towards us, and towards each one outside of us even. This is how we want to be seen before the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (33:29) You yourself brought up another question here when you said if we would, say, choose some John Doe anonymous, one friend who would be a representative towards the Creator, and we all support him and we are all him now. Is that a correct way to work? Say in the Ten, let's say we choose one friend and…

M. Laitman: We don't do that. Maybe we can see it from the writings of Rabash that it might be possible to advance this way towards a connection, but I don't think, and I didn't see, I don't remember that we ever did that between us when we were with the Rabash. But let's say we have a group, and let's say we choose somebody, and towards him we try to be in contact as much as we can to be in contact with him.

Student: So, no.

M. Laitman: No.

Student: In our time then, everything comes from connection, not a single character or a single friend.

M. Laitman: I also don't see that it's written here. That's why this is how we relate to one another.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (35:01) Another question. You said before that we should want to reveal the Creator as a great friend of yours and be open to Him, and so on - see the Creator as a friend. What's the difference between seeing the Creator as a friend and any other friend in the Ten?

M. Laitman: Well, it's clear that every friend in the Ten is a friend. He's ripe for the connection with me, and I also yearn to reach connection with him. But the Creator is above all those possibilities for connection. Meaning that I yearn to reach Him in a certain connection with my friends, so I see in that the ability in my connection with them that that connection can cover all the instances I have with them, and I'm always with them in connection.

Student: Where does the connection with the friends and the connection with the Creator come together? Where does it connect?

M. Laitman: Connection with the friends is in us when we are prepared to be in a connection between us, and from that, connection with the Creator. And connection between us and the Creator, we need to build. We now need to gather all the connections between us and to discover which type of connection we are yearning for between us. That for sure will bring us to contact with the Creator.

Student: And when a person needs help, support, advice, who does he turn to, his friends in the Ten or the Creator?

M. Laitman: When a person needs help, any type of help, I guess that a person in a state where he needs support, help, so he must turn to the Creator.

Student: So, first of all, I turn to the Creator, who is my friend, and then…

M. Laitman: We don't have anyone else to turn to. Truthfully, there's no one else to turn to.

Question (W Unity): (38:59) When a person yearns for revelation, so he doesn't use the vessels of reception, or he uses them in an opposite way, that through them he's trying to express his relation to the Creator?

M. Laitman: I didn't exactly get what you mean.

Student: I mean that the concealment that a person feels, he doesn't ask for it to be removed directly, he wants that through the concealment, if I come closer in that way, I agree with it. So what's the right way to relate to the concealment, and could we say that a person is ready for concealment or revelation in a clear way?

M. Laitman: A person should long for a state where he is maximally close to the Creator.

Student: So, to feel the light clearly, meaning we start from feeling that the Creator's relation towards us is not like we see, but to yearn for revealing His love, His attitude, that we have to reveal His love.

M. Laitman: Yes, that's correct.

Question (W MAK 159): (40:45) If a person doesn't find contact with the Creator, does this mean that he's not in contact with his friends?

M. Laitman: No, you can't say that. You can't say that so unequivocally, that it's like that, and that's it. But in principle, one necessarily needs to examine oneself and find out, what comes down to being the source, the reason for feeling not close to the Creator or not sufficiently connected to the friends.

Student: How to restrict myself in a way that I'll only have a point in the heart, only a desire for the Creator and the friends?

M. Laitman: A point in the heart means the only desire that I have towards the Creator. So if I restrict myself to the level of just that desire, that other than that I have nothing else, that means I'm in that point in the heart. More questions?

Reader: Let's keep reading and then we'll go back to the questions. Go ahead. 5.54

Reading: (42:18) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #54

54) When the Creator sees that one has completed one’s measure of exertion and finished everything he had to do by the power of his choice and his strengthening of faith in the Creator, the Creator helps him. Then, one attains open Providence, meaning the revelation of the face. Then, he is rewarded with complete repentance, meaning he adheres to the Creator once more with his heart, soul, and might, as though naturally drawn by the attainment of the open Providence.

M. Laitman: Yes. Meaning here we see that this does not end with the individual, with the human. It ends with the Creator, actually, after the Creator sees that a person completed his labor. Meaning, when do we enter the next stage? When the Creator sees that man has finished his work in terms of his choice, then the Creator appears to him, and he merits revelation of the face.

Reader: Let's keep reading, 55.

Reading: (44:09) Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #55

55) These above attainment and repentance come to a person in two degrees: The first is the attainment of absolute Providence of reward and punishment. Besides attaining the reward for every Mitzvah in the next world in utter clarity, he is also rewarded with the attainment of the wondrous pleasure in immediate observation of the Mitzvah in this world.

In addition, besides attaining the bitter punishment extending from every sin after one’s death, one is also rewarded with feeling the bitter taste of every transgression while he is still alive.

Naturally, one who is rewarded with this open Providence is certain that he will not sin again, as one is certain that he will not cut his own flesh and cause himself terrible suffering. In addition, one is certain that he will not neglect a Mitzvah without performing it the instant it comes to his hand, just as one is certain that he will not neglect any worldly pleasure or a great profit that comes into his hand.

M. Laitman: Okay, I see we have questions, not many, but still, let's start from Petah Tikva.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (46:07) What does it mean to open the Creator's relation towards us?

M. Laitman: To open the Creator's relation to us means that it will be clear to us where this relation is revealed, in what way it is revealed between us. And from this relation, what can we ask and turn to.

Student: Is that a reward, Rav, that we want?

M. Laitman: No, no, no, that is completely not it. Not it.

Question (MAK 11): (47:08) You said the Creator is above all the possible connections. What does that mean? If suddenly I'm able to see the Creator and the friends, so we have to go and search for something even higher?

M. Laitman: No, I didn't say that we need to go above that. We need to try and find, reveal in our friends the Creator. What does He want? What does He want from us?

Question (W Turkiye 7): (48:09) We read that the suffering causes a person to have doubts in the existence of the Creator. So, what's the reason? What's the spiritual root to this phenomenon?

M. Laitman: What phenomenon?

Student: That he has doubts in the existence of the Creator when he feels suffering.

M. Laitman: That is, if the suffering push one forward?

Student: That the suffering cause a person to have doubts in the existence of the Creator. What is the reason?

M. Laitman: The reason is that the suffering does that. Exactly.

Student: What do you do in such a state? What do you do in such a state, that a person has doubts in the Creator.

M. Laitman: Keep going. Keep going.

Question (W Rehovot 1): (49:15) What does concealment, revelation, what does it help? It feels like a game from the Creator. How does it help us advance? What is the benefit that there is concealment and revelation?

M. Laitman: Concealment and revelation show us the Creator's attitude to us. And the Creator changes the amount of concealment or revelation in order to invert ourselves from concealment to revelation and vice versa, so that we can work to be in that. So we can be, how to put it… To take ourselves from revelation to concealment, concealment to revelation, that we will then discover ourselves in either concealment or revelation, but closer to the Creator.

Student: Why is it so important for the Creator that we feel Him as the Good who does Good? Why is it so important?

M. Laitman: Why is it important?

Student: Why is it important? Why is it important to the Creator that we feel Him as the Good that does Good? On one hand, we feel sorrow from suffering. On the other hand, there's sorrow that we don't feel Him as the Good that does Good, because we're in the will to receive. Why is it so important that we feel Him as the Good that does Good?

M. Laitman: Because that is called the revelation of providence in a complete way.

Question (W MAK 12): (51:52) It is said that the light departs, and there's only sorrow and doubts. If the light disappears, why does the concealment still bring revelation? Could I say that the departure of the light is still a certain presence of the Creator, and everything happens according to the records, and that's the inner contact that remains even in double concealment?

M. Laitman: Well, that's... You got complicated and confused over the whole thesis. Okay, okay, fine. What are we doing next? See, now you got me confused with your sophistications.

Question (W Hungary 3): (53:20) How does the article explain the connection between the greatness of the many and the greatness of the king, and what effect does have a perception of the creation Creator's importance?

Student: The question was that he's speaking in the introduction to TES about the greatness of the king. So, how the glory of the king is in the masses, and how does it how do we perceive the Creator because of that?

M. Laitman: This is a problem, because in expressing the Creator, Baal HaSulam writes to us. Now, the fact it's not sufficient, we should have questions and requests then.

Question (W Rus): (55:06) We have two questions. Is the measure of suffering the measure of concealment?

M. Laitman: The measure of suffering without the measure of concealment is not the measure of concealment.

Student: So the concealment, we learned that it's reflected light. Can we say that I can measure it in some way? It's a reflected light. Gives me the revelation.

M. Laitman: No, no, we need to talk about this topic some more to clarify it. Let's go forward. Okay.

Question (Moscow): (56:15) …It’s written that he has to attain every commandment clearly. So, what actions in the Ten do we get reward on?

M. Laitman: From coming closer to each other, even though perhaps the distance or mutual resistance, rejection, so in exchange for that, we'll get a reward and so on. So, if we don't get closer between us, we'll get punishment.

Student: What is this reward, how is it expressed?

M. Laitman: Reward means getting closer to the Creator, understanding the Creator, a feeling that He's between us.

Reader: We are ending this part of the lesson. We have a Unity Day from the afternoon until the evening. The whole Kli is gathering to connect and strengthen the foundations of our society. What do you wish for us this day?

M. Laitman: I wish for you to make a connection, and advance more and more, and we'll continue. Tomorrow we have a morning lesson?

Reader: Of course, the unity day ends at 8.30 and as usually we have a regular morning lesson that there won't be any doubt.

M. Laitman: Very well. So I'm with you.

Reader: So thank you, Rav, and we will go to a summary of this part and we'll keep going.
