Baal HaSulam -Shamati 20 Lishma

1. Rav’s Introduction: Yes, we measure everything regarding the person himself in respect to the person who attains, so it is impossible to say this relative to the person in this world, in respect to an ordinary person where he is, he cannot measure this as one does not quite have the scale to measure, by which he could say where he is but when we reach if we reach the wisdom of Kabbalah we start to see somehow we start to measure if we are in or the receive or in order to bestow. That is are we in the state of Lo Lishma which is a very important examination that I check myself and I see that I am in order to receive only for myself and so on, or I am yearning for the state of Lishma in order to bestow to the friends, to the Creator or maybe I already reached that and I'm truly in the state of Lishma. Where person is he himself needs to discover and determine it, this is why all our discernments are in respect to the person who attains, who receives and there is no other goal for the person who is in this world for people instead everybody has to reach this say state of for her sake, Lishma as it says that they should know me from the least to the greatest and my house will be the house of prayer for all nations. The goal is clear to reach such a level of adhesion with the Creator and this is how we achieve the final state. In the meantime, we do not know what there is beyond, there are some hints in the wisdom of Kabbalah that the development does not stop with the final correction but in the meantime to achieve for her sake, Lishma which is the goal that we have in front of us. Let's read about this, read the article again which is the number 20 from the book Shamati.

2. S. (11:09) Is Lishma the same as the second restriction?

R. No, it is not before the second restriction and above the second restriction, in the first restriction it is all for Lishma. The whole spirituality starts all of it in the state there are degrees in Lishma and according to that we reach the ladder of degrees from this world to Ein Sof but all of these things are all in order to bestow, in for Lishma.

S. So when we cross the barrier, we enter this state?

R. Yes, the barrier itself is entering for Lishma.

3. S. (12:35) The first part is the prayer that brings us to Lishma or the prayer itself is Lishma?

R. No, the prayer is the request that we want to achieve something and what we want to achieve we want to attain actions of bestowal, they are called Lishma when we are doing it for the Creator. According to that, according to the similarity of form we begin to feel him, understand him, to receive from him until we fill our vessels and with the actions of bestowal and this is how we reach attachment with him.

S. What is an action of bestowal?

R. Then I am beginning to be concerned about the group about the Creator instead of caring only for myself which is how I start the work according to my nature. Bit by bit I reach a state when I feel that it is necessary to care for others so by me beginning to develop inside the inclination, I get closer to the quality called Lishma and the whole of spirituality, the entire ladder of the spirituality is all the degrees of Lishma the only question is on top of which egoistic desires I can determine this.

S. I apologize but let's say I prepare a meeting for the 10, does that not mean I am in Lishma

R. It is along the way of course it is not that stayed yet but this quality is received in the broken vessels of reception, it corrects them to some extent to be in order to bestow. It inverts those desires from receiving to bestowal, so what we acquire is the quality of bestowal, the thoughts of bestowal, calculations of bestowal, this is called Lishma. Actually, there is a difference between the true wisdom of Kabbalah that the person is educated to reach this Lishma or kinds of other methods, all kinds of varieties by which the person makes exertions in this world. The wisdom of Kabbalah only engages in bringing the person into this is state of bestowal, into Lishma because there is no other choice, it is either this world or the other world the upper world is completely in bestowal, in Lishma and this world is entirely for our own sake, in reception which is Lo Lishma. Lo Lishma is also a special state when the person wants to reach Lishma but he's not capable yet so he sees that he is in Lo Lishma, he did not reach it yet so this is already at transition this is before the barrier. 

The person is checking himself, he wants to rise above it but still he does not succeed, he cannot achieve yet, the state of Lishma. Actually, here we have a few states, the state of this world which is completely beastly in order to receive a state, where we want to reach Lishma but we have not reached it yet which is called Lo Lishma. We see and we each measure, we admit that we already are in the egoistic desires, we see that clearly, we understand this, we do not agree with it but cannot rise above it yet. The state of Lishma is above that and in that we have the complete ladder of degrees of bestowal, the 125 degrees of bestowal, some of the degrees are in order to acquire the bestowing in order to bestow, the quality of bestowal only over the coarseness of Shoresh, Aleph, Bet, 0 1 and 2 levels. The other half of the path, the way is very special it is already in order to receive in order to bestow, it when we use the coarseness of the will to receive, only to bestow and with the coarseness of three and four and this is how we reach the state of end of correction. R. If the person reaches the quality of bestowal and he works in the quality of bestowal he receives strength from above to work with that the quality of bestowal above reception so he has no exertion anymore. He is working with the force he is getting from the Creator, from above which is the quality of bestowal and that he is fulfilled through this force and he has no efforts. All of the efforts are to reach the quality of bestowal but to be in that, to live in that in the quality of bestowal, it does not cost any effort. 

S. But there is work later to overcome the ego?

R. Yes, it is an effort but it is not work anymore, it is already a reward, it is already a pleasure when I can overcome, to the extent I overcome I feel myself as being lifted, elevated. About this it is written “taste and see that the Lord is good,” we will reach this and see. This is much more pleasant, the most important is to enter the first degree of spirituality and the higher and higher we rise even though it seems that the problems are getting greater, however we get forces, awakenings more.

5. S. (20:55) That for Lishma state is that something that stays forever?

R. No, it is exit and entries, because each time I arrive to a certain state when I receive a new desire to receive and I work with it, correcting it with the intention to bestow, so I am finished with this work, whatever I received. I get a new portion then I feel a desire to receive which is revealed in me and it is always a sudden and it's always deeper and it is unpleasant in the first moment and later on a shrink myself and I realize that this is to my benefit and I have to rise over this also and then I will get a greater recognition and closeness to the Creator and this is how we progress. 

6. S. (22:21) So we have to give awakening from below in prayer and then it says, what does an awakening from above mean before obtaining Lishma, what is this awakening from above when it comes from below because we have to pray?

R. There is no person, the person is not waking up from below if he is not awakened from above because if we are talking about awakening towards the Creator, to bestowal, towards connection, these are qualities that do not exist in us at all. We are in the opposite qualities to start with which are qualities towards separation, distancing from each other and if we do come closer then we come closer in order to exploit each other, only in such a way, therefore this is what we feel.

S. What is this awakening from above specifically before one comes to Lishma before attaining Lishma, what is this awakening from above?

R. I do not know, let's say that now you are sitting in the lesson, why did you come to the lesson, who gave you this desire, the power, the awakening. Of course, it is clearly coming from above. It is not that the beast that wants to get up and comes to the lesson, all of this is an awakening from above. We need to reach a state where we wake up ourselves, by ourselves through an awakening from below, coming from us, towards attachment with the Creator. This is actually our work in the group. Bit by bit during the elevations or on the degrees more and more we determine on our own that we wants to get closer to the Creator, each higher degree is considered that we crave more to the Creator, that we demand him more, that we are more capable of having a grip on the degree, to hold on to it to elevate ourselves even more. This is it and each time the Lishma from one degree to the next greater, it is more in order to bestow it is further away from the ego this is how we get closer. 

7. S. (25:53) There is something not clear if we say that there is a law that the desire to receive cannot advance without the pleasures then there is a transitional state between being taking our strength away until we get the force of bestowal, so in this transitional phase, what is our fuel?

R. I do not think that we can find words for it for the time being, later of course, we will be able to talk about these things and examine them. The Creator always gives the person a part of the desire and awakening and fuel in a revealed manner and a part of the desire and the fuel in a concealed way. This is how the person progresses, this is one thing, the second thing is that besides that there is the matter of habit becoming a second nature, we get fuel from that as well. We get fuel out of us being in an environment in a family and among friends, so there are many reasons that work on us and we do not quite understand how they become established in us, how they bring us to the goal.

S. At the moment the Creator wakes us up from a state of unconsciousness and then this force motivates us when I simply cannot accept what we called Lo Lishma that the Creator moves us?

R. Of course we progress all the time and this is called Lo Lishma because it's not according to our request, not according to our prayer, not according to our desire, but if our progress comes to us through the prayer then it is called Lishma according to the degree of our participation with the Creator.

S. So we are never left powerless?

R. Yes, the Creator always leads us to the goal, so what the mind does not do the time will do the most important is the persistence and always sooner or later, maybe it is in 10 years but the person will wake up and continues the way and reaches what he needs to reach. The most important is that he is there, that he is ready, he participates and he is willing. This is why it says anything but leave if you are in a group in an environment that is progressing then for sure the Creator is taking care of you in whatever way it is needed.

8. S. (29:41) “Taste and see that the Lord is good” where do we feel this taste in the group, in this world?

R. This means the Taamim, taste, the flavors this already refers to the light that expands from the Peh in the Rosh of the spiritual Partzuf down to the Tabur, these are the flavors and in that we feel indeed that the Creator created is only for our benefit so we could be fulfilled with the upper light.

S. So it is not felt into this world?

R. The higher light cannot be felt for a person who exists only in this world, the person has to acquire the vessels of bestowal and in those vessels, he feels the upper light otherwise there is no connection between the vessel and the light.

9. S. (30:59) Can the person be in Lo Lishma if he has not reached the first degree of Lishma?

R. You mean that this is two legs, that if I reach Lishma then I'm opposite to that, in Lo Lishma, that is truthful but it is already beyond the barrier. The barrier we are at the time of preparation as we call it, is Lishma but it is Lo Lishma in preparation and later on against any spiritual thing on the right side in order to bestow we have the left side which is in order to receive. Against the holiness we have the Klipot and this is how we discover each time Lo Lishma and Lishma, Lo Lishma and Lishma, and we always start from the darkness from Lo Lishma but you said it correctly.

10. S. (32:21) How can I know when the awakening is from above or from below?

R. What do you mean awakening from below, from the friends, I do not know how you define it.

S. When I wake up in the morning how do I know it is me awakening it or it comes from above?

R. When you get up in the morning, it is habit becomes second nature. Let's say that I have been waking up for 50 years in the morning. This is a habit already, I cannot sleep from midnight or 1 a.m. onwards. Later on, at 10 in the morning I can sleep again, if I do not have video programs I have to participate in and then I can sleep another half an hour or an hour, this is a habit. 

11. S. (33:47) If we can be precise about this question?

R. Lishma is a state when the person wants and he's already capable of working to a certain degree of his desire to progress towards the Creator, this is a direction of the work with the desire for the Creator's sake. This measure determines the spiritual Partzuf the person is building to the Creator then there is a Rosh and the Toch and Sof, it's all according to the measure of bestowal or Lishma that the person acquired.

12. S. (34:47) In the end he writes that even though we do not feel the flavor of the work, the habit turns it into a reward, how can we vote against the desire and turn it into a habit, how is it possible to work against the desire without feeling reward but working by habit. I see that for me any small thing is a big effort, how to get used to it?

R. We get used to it, we know it from our life that habit becomes second nature, we do the same thing and the person reaches a state where he does come close to him, it is clear. The vessels, the desire to receive gets impressions from it and the person even starts to love it and even things that previously were unpleasant to the desire to receive, they start to become more desired for it and it relates to them with patience, this is the nature of the desire to receive. so many women in BB

13. S. (36:14) In the article it says that by obtaining Lishma one puts the evil inclination to death you said there are 125 steps to attain Lishma, how to define the evil inclination in the work and 

 

should we work with it individually?

R. The evil inclination means everything, anything that stops me or obstructs me with my connection with the group and the group's connection with the created and this evil inclination is under the control of the Creator this is the vessel with which the Creator works. Deliberately wakes up in us the rejection from the group, the rejection from the Creator. The Creator himself does this in order to stimulate us in order to turn us a little bit in this way, to elevate our sensitivity to the connection between us and from the connection between us, to the connection with him, with the Creator. Without the evil inclination we cannot detect there we are in relation to the Creator and between us so we need to prepare that connection between us and then from the connection between us we have to reach out to the Creator and then we can truly have a vessel in which we can receive the revelation of the Creator between us. This entire vessel is built both in the connection between us and also in the connection between us and the Creator in the form of bestowal in all kinds of different forms, different measures but they are all considered Lishma because we want to bestow, we want to connect to the others, to connect through the others to do good to others so this is called Lishma, it is the opposite of our original nature.

14. S. (38:46) In the beginning, he says that we need to feel that the burden of the Kingdom Heaven as something that is heavy, why? 

R. Not in the beginning, until we receive the force to be above our ego then we are under it, and we do whatever it requires of us either without recognition or the understanding who is controlling us, just like we are each of us now. We are under the complete control of the will to receive, complete control. When we begin by the light that reforms that shines on us more and more, through dissemination, through the connection between us, through the study, when we get some illumination, that we start to acknowledge more and more that we are in order to receive, only under the force of reception, not in the force of bestowal at all. We get to know this more and more, we start hating this control of the force of reception, and we want to come out of it, maybe, and we see we can’t. The greater or the higher the soul of a person should be in the times of corrections, the lower, the heavier it is in the uncorrected state. According to this rule, that ‘’if one is greater than his friend, his inclination is greater.’’ That’s why we’re not to be despaired here. We are very bad, or the worst souls that went through the greatest shattering. That’s why it is hard for us to awaken and to start the work in order to bestow, in Lishma (for Her sake). We can’t, we don’t even understand what is going on. That’s how we advance, but from Lo Lishma (not for Her sake) they will come to Lishma. The main thing is mutual help and dedication.

15. S. (41:48) Sometimes for short moments we feel joy in the work, is this considered Lishma (for Her sake) or is it our ego using spirituality to receive for itself to enjoy?

R. We should scrutinize this on the path, there is such a question. 

16. S. (42:58) Can it be that the person truly is in Lishma (for Her sake), however, it is hidden from him that he is in Lishma (for Her sake), because of that he falls to Lo Lishma (not for Her sake)? 

R. No, no. Specifically when a person is in Lishma (for Her sake), he comes closer to measure his degrees in Lishma (for Her sake), Rosh, Toch, Sof of his soul, in his Partzuf, how he is connected to others, how he strengthens his connection with the friends, how he is building his society, his environment when all of us are more as one man in one heart, how they accept the Creator. Meaning, adapt themselves more and more to the upper light so the upper light will be revealed in them from Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Haya, Yechida, etc., in all the different degrees, in the ascents, descents, various internal states, between them both in fights and in connection. It’s life, it's a sizzling life in Lishma (for Her sake), much more than what we have here. Here we’re like in a kindergarten. Let's hope we’ll work in that, we’ll come to it and we'll have what to talk about.

17. S. (44:40) Is it possible to reach the state of working in upliftment and pleasure before we reach Lishma (for Her sake)?

R. Why not. If we bestow the greatness of the goal, the greatness of the group, for each other, on the background of what’s happening in the world today. We see how exhausted humanity is, they do not know what to do. If previously there were times where people lived in a more calm way, taking trips, doing something, today everyone is afraid and they are getting used to live under nature’s threat. Look what they are telling us, the volcanoes. Help me, I do not even remember the troubles on the verge of coming, heatwaves, cold waves, floods, earthquakes, I am not even talking about wars. Then, there are other things, plagues of course, I don’t know. I live in this world for 75 years, and besides, maybe the last 15 years, besides the last 15 years, I did not really hear that humanity is concerned about its existence. There were talks about the world wars, but nature’s disasters it’s much worse than world wars. These are things that we are incapable of stopping in our ordinary vessels, it’s only through the relations between us and humanity does not yet understand that. Today we have come to a state where humanity is round, all-over Earth, we have to connect between us, and we are not connecting. Until we finally understand that only by our ever-growing connection between us that is becoming more and more whole, we can calm our Earth down and make our life very good here. If we don’t do that, nature will teach us in the opposite way as it has begun.

S. Exactly here, what is the pleasure we have, exactly in that state that you described? What is our pleasure at this time?

R. Our pleasure is what we want to help humanity, disseminate the method of correction, what’s the rule remedy including for the pandemics and the other blows of nature. Everything comes from nature, the Creator. The numerical value of the Creator in Hebrew is nature, everything comes from Him. Explaining it to other people that’s our work.

18. S. (48:50) He writes at the beginning of the article that it’s impossible for there to be a true prayer, if he doesn’t first know that without prayer you cannot achieve it. Therefore, through the actions and remedies that he does in order to be rewarded Lishma (for Her sake), corrected vessels are formed in him that will want to receive Lishma (for Her sake). What does it mean, the remedies, the Segulot, the virtues that one does?

R. Whatever can help me to relate to my group better, to see how much I am not doing it correctly. I am asking the Creator to help me to be connected to them, to relate to actions of bestowal as much as I can, to see that I am not in them, to ask the Creator to help me, etc., etc. All the actions I can perform in order to awaken myself to turn to the Creator, and to ask for help from Him so that in all these addresses, what I want to attain is such help from the Creator that I really cry out, I’ll pray, have such a deficiency. This the meaning that the Creator will open up my connection with Him, and that’s how I’ll see my friends and the Creator, and myself, and the entire humanity, how everyone has to connect together. That’s how we’ll continue. 

S. Just to clarify it, he writes, ‘’acts and remedies he does.’’ What does it mean?

R. Bestowal to the group, dissemination to the wide world, study alone and in the group, participation as much as it can be wider, as wide as it can be, with all the students. Now we are heading towards the next congress, we want to have a meal, virtual in the meantime, etc. Meaning, we have to increase the connection between all of us, because this way, in this physical connection even, we cause a connection between us in a spiritual manner. This is a direct link, direct bestowal on the connection between us and the Creator.

19. S. (51:42) When we study, it creates a new relation in me towards the evil inclination?

R. I do not know. It all depends on the connection between us and on our relation, and also the amount of people there. It is possible that on Saturday we have more people participating, is this correct? Friday, Tuesday, more? More people on Tuesday than Saturday? I don’t know what to tell you. There is a difference, but this difference it all depends on us. It’s not because today is Saturday, a different day is a different day. It all depends on us, it’s not about a certain day, or month, or year. It is written, ‘’Israel,’’ meaning the ones who want to reach straight to the Creator, Yashar El. Israel are above the different stars or signs, meaning they don't depend on any force of nature besides the Creator. They don’t depend on times, or days, or nights, months, or anything. They only depend on the relations between them and the Creator. 

20. S. (53:41) The habit becomes second nature, it is when the Creator is revealed as the good who does good? 

R. No, it's the result of dedication. That’s how he reaches, bit by bit. 

21. S. (54:03) Who am I so that I can give answers and explain something to people? 

R. So, don’t explain anything. You are not allowed to go out and to explain to them, it is forbidden for you, that's it. You'll only confuse them and you distance them away from the path. First of all, organize yourself patiently, take your time as much as needed, that’s all.

22. S. (54:45) What corrected vessels does it refer to, here, when he says ‘’the corrected vessels that will want to receive Lishma?’’ 

R. The corrected vessels are our desires that are aimed to connection between us, and from us to the Creator. That will be all of us connected in a way that we’ll disclose. We’ll have an ability to connect to the Creator. 

23. S. (55:18) Does the intention to bestow change our desire? 

R. The intention in order to bestow changes everything. It is simply turning your world upside down, you start seeing the world in different connections between each and every detail of the world. It depends on what level you are in in order to bestow, it is like this verse, “I have seen the world and it’s the opposite.” 

24. S. (56:05) What degrees are there in Lishma (for Her sake)? 

R. In Lishma (for Her sake)? All 125 degrees until the final correction. Meaning, until the final correction means that all the desires to receive should be revealed in me and in others, and we from one degree to another, from one state to another, we connect them together in the correct system of communication, of connection, between all these desires, in the mind and the heart, the right connection system. This way we advance until the final correction. The final correction is when we come back to Malchut de Ein Sof. 

25. S. (57:04) With what means does a person shift from working against his desire to work that brings pleasure to the Creator?

R. Again?

S. How does a person shift, transition, from working against his own desire to working in order to give the Creator pleasure?

R. How does a person shift? It’s only through the upper light, that the Creator shines upon him, to the extent that a person gives an exertion. As he completes the measure of his exertion, then the Creator shines on him. The person starts feeling that a new desire awakens in him that wasn’t there before. Even before, he starts feeling that bit by bit, an awakening and a new desire coming to him for a new kind of connection. But now, the moment he really gets a new desire, he sees a new world opens for him. 

26. S. (58:19) If the ego enjoys only bestowal, it cannot do it otherwise? 

R. The ego enjoys bestowal? How can that be? That’s something I don’t know, I don’t know this thing. When I bestow and I enjoy it, and that’s the ego? If I bestow and enjoy, it’s a correction already, I am in, enjoying. Maybe it’s possible that this is considered to bestow in order to receive. Maybe that’s what they mean. Let’s scrutinize this.

27. S. (59:04) How does it come that a person works, he doesn't really ask for it, but still gets an illumination that corrects him?

R. This is the Creator making the calculations and giving a person even such awakenings that a person doesn’t deserve it according to our calculation, but he gets it. Why? This is called giving in advance seemingly. Later, he’ll demand a refund for it, an exertion. There are such calculations.

28. S. (59:52) It says in the text it is impossible for a true prayer to emerge if he first does not know that without a prayer it is impossible to achieve it, how does a person reach that state?

R. By investing strength, seeing he is not coming to what is required so he outbursts with a prayer, it comes on its own. If a person wants to reach something and he really yearns, then he comes to a state where he does not receive intentionally. We have many examples of people doing things without feeling a result and this all comes for us to outburst with a prayer. What, where am I expecting to have something. This is where we come to a connection between us and the Creator with a true prayer when we turn to him, we reach an answer of this prayer.

29. S. (01:01:20) Through the prayer should we demand an awakening from below to reach bestowal?

R. Everything as we have learned yesterday and the day before is attained by the force of a prayer which should one when we connect between us, agree between us what we are asking for and the prayer should be collective, this is considered a prayer in the public in the group. Each one should develop an address to the Creator of itself and to make sure, even to write a text what we are asking for, not long up to five sentences and turn to the Creator. It may be the next day we have a different prayer and the next day another prayer, but we need to stand for it during the day, that we today demand this and that from the Creator, if we change it, it’s not that bad. We are scrutinizing all kinds of foundations and to change it is correct.

30. S. (01:03:18) What actions should a person do when he realizes he is in Lo Lishma?

R. First the full integrate into the group in his group and also integration with the general world Kli and this may be by all kinds of different ways different kinds of work we need to sustain in order to keep our system. If I get up and I turn on my computer and I sit by it 4 to 3 hours a day it is not considered that I am participating, what am I giving, each one has to ask himself what am I giving? 

I'm not turning to the ones who are working for payment or for salary it's not, considered giving, what am I giving the organization, dissemination of the wisdom of the correction of the world for the advancement of the final correction and by this and only by this do I give contentment to the Creator. I am helping humanity to advance to discover the upper force. What should we do? What am I doing? 31. S. (01:06:40) If a person sees that is very far from Lishma, what can we do to not despair?

R. Even if a person does not reach Lishma, about this it is written, I can't find it now and your reward is very big, the ones who cannot are the ones who toiled and did not reach. Their reward is very big because the person doesn't have the ability to appreciate even one moment of working for the revelation of the Creator to the world. This is a problem, if we don't appreciate sufficiently this is why we are not concerned more and more about bringing people, especially women to this work.

32. S. (01:07:50) How can we check if we're asking for vessels of bestowing or for reception?

R. Yes, but where are we? We are between the desire to receive and the desire to bestow so you have to increase the will to bestow and decrease the will to bestow, that is our work.
