Rosh HaShanah - Selected Excerpts from the Sources.

Reader:

Reader: Hello. Happy holiday! We will be reading excerpts on the topic of Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year, starting with item 8, Rabash, letter number 34.

Reading: (00:19) Item 8. RABASH, Letter No. 34

The meaning of Rosh Hashanah [New Year’s Eve] is a new beginning, when a person begins to build a new structure. It is as our sages said, “One should always consider oneself half sinful, half righteous. If he performs a single Mitzva [good deed/commandment], happy is he, for he has sentenced himself and the whole world to the side of merit. If he commits one transgression, woe unto him for he has sentenced himself and the whole world to the side of fault.”

M. Laitman: Yes, this is what Rabash writes, and it’s true. From the letter here we learn what can a person do to shift himself, to judge himself to the scale of merit or demerit. So we have to learn how we can sentence ourselves to the scale of merit and thus reach purpose in safe and short path.

Reading: (02:02) Item 9. RABASH, Article No. 882, “Rosh Hashanah”

Rosh Hashanah [beginning of the year] means the beginning of the creation of man. It is as our sages said that a drop is declared whether it will be wise or a fool, etc. (Nidah 16b). “Rains” means one’s corporeal forces, whether he will have a big or a small brain, a small or a big heart, a small or a big desire, and so on.

If a person walks on the good path, when he grows, it is impossible to add, meaning to make for him a bigger brain and desire, since they were already allotted to him when he was made. However, he uses all of his brain and energy only in a place of Kedusha [holiness] and need. This is enough for him to achieve a degree where he can be rewarded with the revelation of the light of the Creator, to truly adhere to Him, and receive his proper share in the next world.

M. Laitman: This means that we shouldn't fantasize something here. Everything is given by nature, and we need to, each according to his strength and opportunities, to make an effort in order to connect to the upper force and receive from Him all of the instructions, all of the forces, all of the opportunities, and then we are certain to reach the goal soon.

Reading: (04:17) The Judgment that the World Is Judged. Item 10. RABASH, Letter No. 29

Rosh Hashanah is the time of judgment, when people are sentenced favorably or to the contrary. Rosh (head) is regarded as a root from which the branches emerge. The branches always extend according to the essence of the root, for a root of oranges will not bring out branches of apples.

According to the root and the Rosh that a person establishes for himself at first, so he continues his life. The root is the foundation upon which the whole construction is built.

The judgment that a person is judged in the beginning of the year means that the person himself is the judge and the executer, since the person himself is the judge, the arbiter, the plaintiff, and the witness. It is as our sages said, “There is a judgment below; there is no judgment above.”

M. Laitman: Meaning that we need to try and understand and collect all of our labor so that we will bring nature, if we could put it that way, to the right purpose.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (06:07) How can a person set up the root, the head in the beginning so that the order of his life will all be built correctly, according to the right line?

M. Laitman: That doesn't depend on the person. What depends on a person is only the willingness that he will be made into that. But he himself will determine all of the twists and turns and discernments that's not up to a person.

Student: What is a person's readiness for that depend on?

M. Laitman: Man's willingness depends first on his preparation, and as it says, that the merit comes through a righteous and demerit comes through the one who's in debt. So he has to try. Can't demand more than what you give strength for.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (07:35) What does it mean that the person is the judge, the executor, the witness and all that?

M. Laitman: Following the states that is going through, the state that is in in every moment, and he can resist certain things and attract certain things, and thus he shows himself and the Creator and his environment how he accepts the Providence.

Student: But how can a person judge himself if he's bribed from birth?

M. Laitman: It's true on the one hand, but on the other hand, he receives strength where he can choose the right path, and thus he becomes accepted.

Question (H 10): (08:55) What is the meaning of the side of merit? Why is it called “merit” specifically?

M. Laitman: It's that a person comes not to a good state, but rather he enters a delicate state. And therefore, in such a case, he needs to resist what comes to him. And that's felt as a line of demerit.

Question (W MAK 43): (09:55) If the judgment exists only below, the screen, the reflected light, that's the judgment, so that's the judgment below. So, identify with the Rosh of the Partzuf Bina. So a person who judges himself, does he become like a Rosh, a head? And there's no difference between him and the Creator then? Where's the limit, so I won't be fantasizing that I'm judgment?

M. Laitman: That's not for now. That's after certain steps. The person works and wants to actually break through to the right decision. When he sees the goal in front of him, and he wants to long for it correctly, then we can say, we can talk about how everything is done for him. That's how he discovers that. Otherwise, it doesn't seem that way to the person. He just needs to choose.

Question (W Unity): (11:26) You said that there are forces in a person that can stop the Creator from working, resisting. How can he be sure that he's allowing the Creator to work on him?

M. Laitman: I need to expel my egoism, reduce it as much as possible. Then you'll feel what you are inclined towards, and that will be the correct action.

Reader: Friends, we have two stations here where you can come and ask. One for the men over there. That's for the women. We have ushers with red hats. Just go to where the microphone is stationed, and we'll let you ask.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (12:32) I understood that judgment is where a person judges his response to what the Creator sends to him.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: But he also says that He gives merit to those who merit it, judgment to those who merit that, and so on. So, there's judgment both above and below.

M. Laitman: There is such a thing, yes.

Student: So, a person comes to the Creator and discovers that He's either denouncing or justifying. What does he do with that now?

M. Laitman: He advances on the path still, and learns this way how good it is to solve the problems that arise before him in the right way.

Student: And the right way is to justify the Creator?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: And if he discovers that he's condemning Him?

M. Laitman: Then he tries to not be certain of himself.

Student: Meaning?

M. Laitman: Meaning not to allow himself to slander the Emanator.

Student: So, that’s also a place for a request?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So the state of Rosh Hashanah, it should be like this throughout one's entire life, between the created being and the Creator.

M. Laitman: It's mostly Rosh Hashanah, meaning the decision to turn to the right direction in life.

Student: So the decision about the right step, next step in life, is called “Rosh Hashanah?”

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (Turkiye 1): (14:41) How does a person direct his thoughts and energy towards Kedusha, towards holiness? How can a person develop such a lack for holiness?

M. Laitman: Typically, this is through connection with the right environment, with the friends in the group, where everyone is thinking about the goal in the right way, and then everyone influences everyone else. That's how it happens. And besides that, we are already in a process that is influenced by the Creator, that wants to bring us closer. So the more we pray, the more we get closer to the Creator, the more we get closer in the right way.

Question (Turkiye 7): (16:09) According to the principle of root and branch, how can a person see that he's connected to our world? But with that, create a Rosh, a head of change, such that his desires change, according to freedom of choice, and he then chooses to be righteous rather than wicked?

M. Laitman: This is an opportunity that's always before the person, and a person can choose that, an opportunity. And then the Creator, according to the response of man, He will already bring down to him all of the forces and opportunities that lead the person to the goal.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (17:22) He writes that our life continues according to how we arrange our root.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: What does that mean?

M. Laitman: The right relation to the Creator, and the correct reading of what the Creator gives us.

Student: We're now, just before a convention, on the topic of one single prayer. So, our collective prayer, to what extent does it arrange our root?

M. Laitman: Our prayer rearranges everything. There is nothing greater than the power of prayer. If we connect between us - men, women, everyone, as much as possible, and we aim our address specifically to the Creator, and specifically to desire correction, to ask Him to raise us, elevate us, then it will certainly happen.

Student: We see that our inner work for each one of us, that's in the Ten. The Ten gives us a lot of power and aims us towards the right prayer. What else do we need to do now with the Ten in this special time? Because we feel that the Creator is giving us a very special time, a lot of power. What do we need to do in the Ten right now, so that we can get to a point where the prayer is truly complete?

M. Laitman: Only connection. And the right prayer to the Creator.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (19:25) How can we, with every moment, resist whatever comes to us?

M. Laitman: Yes, I understand. This is correct in some of the cases, where it's clear to us that we do resist changes and the part that we don't. So, we have to sort out what we feel as a response, as an answer to the states we went through and better cling to the good change. That's it.

Question (W Rehovot 1): (20:47) What is the right response? What is the right way to react to the Creator?

M. Laitman: That we expect Him to help us go through the way and cling to the right goal.

Student: In the states that He sends to us, that we receive from Him, how do we not meddle with His work?

M. Laitman: By the prayer.

Student: Many times, during prayer, we find that we are meddling in His work. So how can we, through prayer, receive those states and to raise a proper prayer without meddling in the response, without resisting the states?

M. Laitman: Only by the connection and the address to the Creator. This needs to be the main thing for us. The direction for connection between us and raising that connection, that point of connection to the Creator. And He will arrange everything else for us until the final correction.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (22:25) You said that everything depends on our prayer in the Ten, and the right connection in the Ten. What is the right connection in the Ten?

M. Laitman: In the connection between us, we want to help all of the participants, so they will be as connected as possible, both between themselves and towards the goal. And this tendency gradually raises us to the Creator. And specifically now, we're in a special state of the year, towards Rosh Hashanah and the connection between us, so that our tendency, the longing for connection, is the great thing that can happen to us. So, we'll continue and do that.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (23:51) I heard you say that on Rosh Hashanah one has to make a decision about the right step to take in life. What steps is one going to take in the Ten? What kind of decision should we reach in Rosh Hashanah?

M. Laitman: The connection. There's nothing else. What we are lacking in general is only to be connected correctly between us with the anticipation to receive some force from the Creator.

Student: How can a Ten declare right what's going to happen with it in the upcoming year?

M. Laitman: By discussing among them and doing all kinds of exercises, and then it will happen.

Student: But is it in the hands of the Ten to decide upon?

M. Laitman: The Ten, certainly. The Ten has to be connected among all the friends and that everyone will agree with that and cling to that and ask for strength to implement it.

Student: Now, the change that will happen to the Ten in the upcoming year, the Creator does that. So how does the Ten compel the Creator to make the change in it that they want in the upcoming year?

M. Laitman: By making actions that the Creator left the Ten to do and asking for the upper force, the Creator, to not leave us and rather advance us.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (26:22) In excerpt 10 he writes that everything goes according to the root. In this past year in the Ten we went through many things, and he writes there, towards the end, that from below we have to judge ourselves. So, first of all, what does it mean that a person needs to judge himself?

M. Laitman: A person must always examine himself to see. If he is doing what shines upon him from the study, from the social connection, and then it's certain that he will advance in a very rapid and direct way towards the goal.

Question (Latin 1): (27:58) Are my Dinim [judgments] not the important thing, and also how can I help the friends to always justify the Creator?

M. Laitman: Of course, judgments are very important. They indicate to me various corruptions, malfunctions, a lack of correction in my connection with the friends and with the Creator. That's one thing. But, besides that, we also have to understand that the prayer that we raise to the Creator is actually stronger than anything. It can calm down all the judgments and bring us to the right goal.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (29:07) I heard you say that a person has to judge himself to check if he's truly justifying the Creator. How can a person check that and not lie to himself?

M. Laitman: Here, you need to do exactly what Rabash writes. You can look at what we've read, what we went through on the topic and continue, and advance. It's still ahead of us.

Student: How can a person be honest with himself in his judgments at all? How can he check that he's not lying?

M. Laitman: First of all, he must make sure that he's not lying to himself, that he's not lying to himself, that he's not coloring the world with whatever he thinks, and that way he can advance. The Creator very much wants us to advance towards him. I don't see any opposition here. To the contrary, a little bit of agreement from our side, and we're already advancing.

Student: So, what is the right agreement with which we need to enter the new year?

M. Laitman: That we will keep all the laws of the connection between us, and from that, we will be awarded with a state called “Shana Chadasha,” a new year.

Question (Latin 6): (31:22) How can we set this direction from the love of the created being to the love of the Creator, in the right way?

M. Laitman: That's our work, to take all the forces of nature, sort them, and direct them towards the Creator, such that He feels love from us.

Question (W Turkiye 7): (32:14) What things should a person pay attention to, so as to judge himself properly?

M. Laitman: The main thing, for now, is the connection between us, the connection between us. And every time we can identify, in the beginning of a new state, something that's corrupted there, in the correction of that corruption, we will be able to adhere to the Creator more strongly.

Question (W German): (33:33) What is an innovation in spirituality? How can I erase all past events and begin anew?

M. Laitman: Innovation? It's when I decide, I decide on a new state, a new degree with the powers, the forces at my disposal, through which I want to achieve adhesion. It's written, they should be as new to you, meaning that each time, every time, we need to relate to states as a new world that we are in, and that everything depends on us.

Question (W ITA): (35:06) The prayer brings us closer to the Creator, but sometimes, with all the yearning, we don't have the words and power to pray. What is that? Is that a new beginning?

M. Laitman: That is from lack of connection with the friends, yes. You have to get closer to them through submission, and that will help you receive new strength.

Question (MAK 25): (35:46) What is judgment? How to understand that correctly? Is it the revelation of the true state?

M. Laitman: It doesn't matter, either way.

Student: Can you ask the friends to reveal that state to you?

M. Laitman: You can do it, both this and that.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (36:18) The emotions we need to resist, I think, are obvious enough. Regarding the inclination towards connection, the feeling that my friends are parts of my soul, is that the right direction, the right way to imagine connection? Or is that just some fantasy or something related to Rosh Hashanah, just a feeling and no more?

M. Laitman: We'll have to see. We'll see.

Question (W Heb 1): (37:00) It says here that you need to arrange the root, the beginning of your actions. But do you even have any control over the root that operates you? Sometimes you feel that this is the angle from which you were allowed to look at the world. Can you change that? Can you change something in the root?

M. Laitman: Yes. Our work is to connect between us and aim ourselves to the root that will change the relation towards us to the point that we reach the root itself.

Reader: I suggest we read the next excerpt.

Reading: (37:54) Item 11. RABASH, Letter No. 49

Man is the judge and must sentence and determine who is right. That is, the evil inclination claims, “It is all mine,” that the whole body belongs to it and man should be concerned with and work only in favor of the evil inclination. Likewise, the good inclination argues, “It is all mine,” that the whole body belongs to it and man should be concerned with and work only for the sake of the good inclination.

When a person wishes to carry out the sentence and choose the good, the question is, “Why does he need to choose the good and say that the good inclination is correct?” It cannot be said that it is in order to receive reward in the next world, since it was said, “Be not as slaves who are serving the Rav in order to receive reward.” Rather, one should choose the good because of the greatness of the Creator. […]

It follows that when a person sentences, he must engage in the greatness of the Creator. Thus, the Creator is elevated by the judgment. Then, once a person has chosen the good—not for a reward—the Creator can give him all His gifts and there will not be any shame. At that time the Creator instills His holiness, meaning lets him feel the holiness.

Question (Kyiv 3): (40:26) This work described in the texts, this judgment, this inner judgment, what's the difference if it's Rosh Hashanah in the calendar or any other day?

M. Laitman: There are roots in the upper worlds, and when we turn to them, then we can awaken their power to influence us.

Student: How does the earthly calendar affect the force and the quality of such action?

M. Laitman: The earthly calendar barely has any effect. If humanity would look into it, we would see that there's a thousand different calendars. Different in terms of days, weeks, months, based on different kinds of holidays and different forces that seemingly affect humanity. We must always understand just one thing, that in every day, in every month, in every year, if we wish to achieve good results, then we need to turn to the Creator, to His force, to His mercy, and thus we'll feel this degree in advance with this force.

Question (Kyiv 1): (42:45) In the last excerpt, it says that when a person goes to judge, he needs to engage in the greatness of the Creator, and then the Creator gives him presence,  reward, because of the importance. How to work with that correctly?

M. Laitman: The most important thing for you is to work for the greatness of the Creator, the revelation of the Creator to all created beings.

Student: How to accept this gift from the Creator? Not because of the gift, but because of the greatness of the Creator, that that will be the focus?

M. Laitman: Ask, there's nothing else, just ask.

Question (Latin 11): (43:55) How is holiness felt?

M. Laitman: We will feel the holiness only in a state where we are all connecting and incorporating together in each other, that our entire group will appear to everyone as a single unit, one thing. And this one thing will feel its connection with the Creator.

Question (W Moscow 6): (44:45) What allows us to perform this judgment from a good place, from love?

M. Laitman: That's your decision. Your decision that this will happen.

Question (W Europe): (45:10) In our current state, what does it mean that we ask the Creator to have the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven in our estimation? And how can we feel that direction?

M. Laitman: To feel this direction in our address to the Creator, we can do that if in our group we connect between us to turn to the Creator and ask of Him.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (45:56) To judge ourselves, do we first need to get to the recognition of evil?

M. Laitman: Certainly, that's good if we do that.

Student: So how can we reach the recognition of evil so as to be able to judge ourselves correctly?

M. Laitman: In the request to the Creator, there is no other way.

Student: And that request should come from what?

M. Laitman: This request comes to the Creator from all of us connecting and nullifying all of the complaints that we each have towards the others, towards the friends. And by that we will feel how the Creator changes His state and begins to relate to us well.

Student: So it means that we need to resemble the Creator's qualities between us?

M. Laitman: Correct, correct.

Student: How do we raise our yearning for that? How to connect so as to truly adhere to the Creator's qualities?

M. Laitman: That's what we learn, and bit by bit we change ourselves like that. That means that we raise ourselves to Him more and more.

Student: How do we reach that kind of connection with the Creator, where we can speak to Him and also feel that He's answering?

M. Laitman: We always talk about that only, and so how do we do it? We always talk about how we are connecting between us, and from the connection between us we raise our connection to the Creator.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (48:04) How do we cancel all of the claims, complaints we have towards the friends? How do I make my ego just shut its mouth with respect to all the criticism and complaints I have towards the friends?

M. Laitman: Complaints to the source or what?

Student: Complaints against the friends, or others, all the time I have that. How do I silence it?

M. Laitman: Also in praying to the Creator.

Student: What do I ask?

M. Laitman: He is the source of all good and bad things as one, and so I have to raise to Him, my prayer, and see, expect at least, that He will pay it to that, and thus carry it out.

Student: If I have complaints against friends in the Ten inside me, what do I ask the Creator to remove those?

M. Laitman: Most. The best thing is that He'll replace it. This is how man's evil inclination directs him all the time.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (49:41) The Ten is a branch and has a root in the Creator, it's like the pipes, the conduits that connect to Ein Sof, to infinity. And if so, how can we ask for confidence within reason if we need to advance with faith above reason?

M. Laitman: This is what's called man rising above himself, transcending himself, when he asks that faith above reason will appear in him.

Question (PT 35): (50:36) How can we feel, actually feel that our motivation is the greatness of the Creator and not the reward?

M. Laitman: That will gradually appear to you on the ladder of degrees.

Student: So why, after choosing the good for the sake of the Creator, can we receive gifts with no shame?

M. Laitman: Because you are probably already in a state of giving and not receiving, and therefore, even when you receive something from the Creator, it doesn't fill your vessel of reception, and you can continue that way.

Student: If so, how can each one of us identify, every day, a moment where he stands before a choice that is for the sake of a reward or a choice that is for the sake of the Creator?

M. Laitman: That will open it up towards everyone, and then it will be clearer.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (52:23) In the excerpts, we've read, it is written that Rosh Hashanah is the time of judgment, and that the person is the judge. How can a person judge if he's governed by the ego?

M. Laitman: So that's how he's judging. Also in our world, the judges are ran by all kinds of evil forces, and we have to do, to follow their judgment. That's it.

Student: How to do it correctly? He needs to choose the good.

M. Laitman: Well, if he can already choose the good, then of course, he'll have a good reward.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (53:27) How to judge neutrally, not be influenced by the forces of evil.

M. Laitman: There's no such thing as neutral. We want to choose the good states, meaning towards the Creator, towards everyone. That's it.

Student: A judge motivated by negative forces to choose good? He can’t.

M. Laitman: So first of all, we have to choose the judges and then connect to their decisions in such a way that it will be between judgment and mercy, between good and bad.

Student: What does it mean to choose a judge?

M. Laitman: To choose a judge, that's a special force of the Creator that knows to choose between us and make balance, create balance.

Question (MAK 11): (55:23) In the article, it says that from here it follows that when a person makes a judgment, he must engage in the greatness of the Creator. What does it mean to elevate the Creator?

M. Laitman: It means that all of man's intentions are to awaken the greatness of the Creator in a gradual way in all his actions. And that's also his entire reward. That's it.

Question (W Haifa 5): (56:22) The person himself is the judge, and he's also being judged right now. So, a person should understand that he received so many gifts. We received our group, Rav. How can we use it, not egoistically, but to actually be a conduit for the Creator and to feel that we're serving the Creator?

M. Laitman: Advance together with us and don't miss anything. In the end, you'll succeed.

Question (W Kyiv 7): (57:17) How do we analyze ourselves, judge ourselves opposite the greatness of the Creator in mind and heart?

M. Laitman: By trying to connect with additional groups through all the questions that you're scrutinizing, and thus you feel that bit by bit you advance. And what's most important, is not to disconnect from each other after the study, after the exercises, but actually to insist on getting closer and connecting.

Student: The group, not just the Ten, meaning with more Tens?

M. Laitman: No, no, I'm talking about the Ten.

Reader: And we'll continue to the next part of the lesson, but before that, let's summarize what we just received from Rav. Let's hold a workshop in the Ten, summarize for eight minutes. Go ahead.
