Part 1: Baal HaSulam. Letter 39.

Reader: Hello, friends. To commemorate the day of the departure of the ARI, we will share a recording from July 2022 that Rav gave on the topic. We will read from letter 39 from Baal HaSulam that is in the writings of Baal HaSulam, and you can find it, of course, in the Arvut system as well.

M. Laitman: The special day where we commemorate the day of the passing away of the ARI. The day of the passing away of a Kabbalist, is a day in which his soul ascends to the heaven, to the place of the pure souls, where the pure souls are, and there it finds its place and continues working for the sake of all other souls, for the sake of humanity, in order to bring all of us to the end of correction. Therefore, we're very glad that he was with us for some time, that soul and today it too is working to the benefit of all of us. So let's read this letter, which is very important. There are many conditions here for us to understand it, and let's try, maybe not all of it, some of it. We'll go over some of it today, and maybe we'll read the rest this evening or tomorrow. We'll see. Please.

17 Sivan, Tav-Reish-Peh-Zayin, June 17, 1927, London

To the famous Hassid … may his candle burn:

Regards to you.

I must inform you that I just received a very distressing letter about my sacred pamphlet being handed over to external ones to abuse it as they please. Now you will understand my stern warning to keep a secret, and why I have not sent the pamphlets until now. This is what I feared, so I wanted to first send the pamphlets to the MARAN and to the rav.

Indeed, that which I dreaded came to me, and the hands of illiterate have betrayed me, doing what I did not order, after my stern warning not to disclose my secret to any person, whoever he may be. And now they have defamed me in the eyes of the generation and have failed me on the path of my exalted work to bring contentment to my Maker. Who can forgive them this? Heaven will testify to my labor in all my strength to extend His holiness to that generation.

M. Laitman: There are many people that always want to harm a Kabbalist, spiritually wise, corporeally wise in different ways, and they also wanted to harm Baal HaSulam. Undoubtedly, it happens to all Kabbalists, and that, too, is in order to protect, keep the Kabbalist himself, for him to keep his distance a bit from the public. And the Creator sends him these channels that want to hurt him on purpose.

Reading: (05:02) Letter 39

And yet, the Sitra Achra [other side] always finds her people, doers of her missions, setting obstacles before me wherever I turn to benefit others. Thus far are my words. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them,” and the Creator does not deny my reward. Bit by bit, I am paving the way, at times less, at times more, but always with profit (reward), until I am rewarded with taking down all the enemies of the Creator with the help of His great and terrible name.

M. Laitman: Because we exist in a system that is entirely built of the forces of the ego and good forces, the Kabbalist is always between these and those, and he always has a problem in his struggle with the different forces of the Sitra Achra, the egoistic forces in the world that he needs to deal with in order to bring humanity closer to the Creator, and to the extent to which he succeeds, he does, and to the measure that he doesn't, still he makes, he takes a step, and maybe even leaves it for next generations.

Reading: (06:43) Letter 39

As for you, do not fear the fear of fools. Those who slander, my little finger is bigger than their waist. So the Creator desired, and so He made me, and who will tell Him what to do and what to work? The merit of my law is greater than the merit of their fathers. Similarly, the contemporaries of Prophet Amos defamed him and said that the Creator had no one on whom to instill His Shechina [Divinity] but that stutterer, as it is written in the Psikta [a Midrash].

However, it is written, “A truthful lip shall be established forever, and a lying tongue is only momentary,” for in the end, the truthful people are the winners. Amos remains alive and existing forever, and who has heard or knows what had happened to his adversaries?

M. Laitman: Each of the Kabbalists, even Amos the Prophet, against which there were also many who turned against him, who wanted to humiliate him, despise him, defame him in the eyes of the generation and other generations, and that's how it is with everyone. And really, we need to understand that this is how the Creator also protects, keeps the Kabbalists, sending him these kinds of emissaries, because There Is None Else Besides Him. So, of course, if there are different enemies that go against the Kabbalists, then it all comes from that upper guided hand, and we as Kabbalists don't need to love everyone, but we need to identify the hand of the good or of the bad in them.

Reading: (08:54) Letter 39

So it is here. The sayers can harm only their own kind, so it follows that the storm swirls on the head of the wicked, the truth lives on and does not weaken by all the lies. Instead, it grows even stronger by them, like a sown field that is strengthened by the manure and dung that are thrown in. With the Creator’s will, the blessing of the field increases and multiplies by them.

M. Laitman: Continues, saying the same, that mainly, the main thing is that we need to hold on to the path of truth. And what comes from different directions, we need to understand that it comes in order to help us keep our straight, direct and pure path.

Reading: (09:58) Letter 39

I still do not feel the harm that will come to me through them concerning the dissemination of my teaching, so I do not know how to calculate a way to instill light and save it from their evil. And yet, it is certain that if I feel any harm, I will take my revenge against them, as is the law of Torah, and I will contend forcefully with them. I will do all that is within the power of my hand to do, as it is the Creator I fear, and there is no other force but Him.

M. Laitman: I do not see what is there to add, because the words are very clear. Baal HaSulam, he needs to fight all those that stand in the way of the wisdom of Kabbalah, and that it is clear to him that they are sent by the Creator, but he, on his part, needs to fight them and take them into account, because that is how the Creator relates to him in order to clean him and raise him to an even higher degree. Because only through obstacles, disturbances, can a person ascend. And what a Kabbalist goes through, therefore, he needs to relate it seriously.

Question (Kyiv 1): (11:52) The language is so exalted in this letter. Who did Baal HaSulam really struggle with? Certain people who were his enemies?

M. Laitman: Of course. Baal HaSulam, he cleaves himself onto the Creator as much as possible, and along with it, he sees in all these people that they can harm him. And of course, in everything, there is the right intention on the part of the Creator, but in between, it happens to many people and Kabbalists, too. They went through many humiliations and problems, and that's how they advanced in a very non-simple manner from one degree to the next.

Student: What's unclear is what was the conclusion made by Baal HaSulam, where he says that he tries to subjugate them all with the help of his great name. What does he mean?

M. Laitman: He wants to say that by his adhesion with the Creator, he disseminates the method, and therefore, this method eventually will defeat all those who are against it.

Reading: (13:41) Letter 39

As a rule, you should know that it is not for my own need or my own glory that I composed the book. Rather, it is only for His sake, for I noticed great confusions in the writings of the ARI because the ARI did not write or arrange them by himself in the full depth of this sublime wisdom. When Rav Chaim Vital heard and wrote the words, he was still not in the degrees of wholeness necessary for attaining those words at their root.

He was young then, thirty years old, when studying with the ARI, as it is written in Gate to Reincarnations (Gate 8, p 49). It writes, “Now, in the year Hey-Shin-Lamed-Aleph [1571], and I am twenty-nine ...” Then, on Passover he was already serving the ARI, and the Rav [ARI] fell ill on Friday, July 21, 1572. The next Tuesday, on the Fifth of Av [July 25, 1572], he passed away.

M. Laitman: This is actually all in all what he writes about the passing away of the ARI. Just like we are today on the yardside of the ARI that’s how it was years back.

Reading: (15:35) Letter 39

You therefore find that at the time of his demise, he [Chaim Vital] was only thirty, and the ARI lived thirty-eight years, as it is known. And he wrote some more there (Gate 8, p 71), that at the time of his passing, Rav Chaim Vital was not by his side [the ARI’s]. These are his words verbatim: “Rav Itzhak HaCohen told me that at the time of my teacher’s passing, when I came out of his room, he (Rav Itzhak HaCohen) entered and cried before him saying, ‘Is this the hope that we all hoped in your life—to see great good, Torah, and wisdom in the world?’ He replied to him, ‘If I found even one complete righteous among you, I would not be taken away prematurely.’ While saying it, he asked about me (about Rav Chaim Vital). He said, ‘Where did Chaim go? Has he left me at such a time?’ He was very saddened. He understood from his words that he had some secret to pass on to me, so he (Rav Itzhak HaCohen) said to him, ‘What shall we do from now on?’ He (the ARI) replied: ‘Tell the friends in my name that from this day on they are not to engage at all in this wisdom that I taught, for they did not understand it properly. Only Rav Chaim Vital shall engage in it, alone, in a whisper, and in hiding.’ He (Rav Itzhak HaCohen) said, ‘But is there no hope at all?’ He said, ‘If you merit, I will come to you and teach you.’ He replied to him, ‘How will you come and teach us if you are now departing from this world?’ He replied, ‘You have no knowledge of the concealed, of how my coming to you will be,’ and he promptly passed away.”

Question (Kyiv 1): (18:05) Yes, this is a question that always interests me. You take the teacher. The teacher is taken away because the students were unworthy. He says that he didn't find worthy students. What does it mean?

M. Laitman: Look, I can't answer because you won't be able to understand me. But there are many calculations in the heavenly systems. And therefore, sometimes a teacher is taken away from his students halfway, as if that they can continue advancing. And why is the teacher taken away? That as if he's being stolen against their will, by that cutting off their path of advancing, reaching, being able to reach great degrees, becoming great, being able to correct the world. But we're unfamiliar with this entire system. I just want to tell you a bit as if to be, somewhat to justify the Creator. In that, this is how it needs to be done from above, and for sure, it was done to the benefit of mankind so that people will be able to invest another incarnation or a few more incarnations in this world in different ordinary corporeal forms, human forms, and only then will they be able to once again reach spiritual degrees. We'll talk about this, but it's all to the benefit of the created beings. The problem is that we don't see the entire round system of Adam HaRishon, and therefore what follows is that, to us, it seems that it's unjust.

How could it be that such people like the Marhu or Rav Chaim Vital, who was so dedicated and young and really wanted, and also all the rest of ARI's students, they too, they really wanted to continue advancing, and suddenly their teacher passes away. And furthermore, before he passes away, he tells them, it's forbidden for you, besides Chaim Vital, to engage in the wisdom of Kabbalah. How is that? How is that possible? But we see that really, that's how it is, that is the demand. And of course, the demand is to the benefit of those souls that don't understand why did they need now to wait in this ordinary life for them to be like all other people, and maybe it is to their benefit, and to the benefit of other people, too, and that's how they need to exist. If they have faith in their teacher, then they will accept it really as a problem that needs to be solved, and to live correctly this way to continue their life.

Question (Nikolaev-Sochi): (22:14) Here it says that he wanted to pass some kind of secret, but there was no one to pass it on to, and I also read that there are such moments that Kabbalists have before passing away, that they need to pass something on to someone else, or is it by chance?

M. Laitman: Nothing happens by chance, but that's how it really is. That's how it really is. This is how it naturally happens. I, too, was present next to Rabash, who really passed away in my hands, on my arms, and I, too, was later asked by the friends, by other students, did he tell you anything, did he? I didn't get permission to say anything, and therefore I'm silent until now.

Student: I'm sorry, but a Kabbalist, when you will pass away, for example, do you have a certain plan before that that you want to pass on that's hidden from us, or?

M. Laitman: What you need to receive in order to be engaged in the correction of the world that you will receive, as you receive it now, daily. Don't worry about that. You need to only continue, like you know now to continue in your connection and in the connection with the Creator.

Question (Heb 1): (24:16) We understand that there are higher calculations, like the upper systems, that we don't understand for generations over generations, that there's no past, present, future.

M. Laitman: Can you ask, simply ask? There are many more people, thousands of people.

Question (PT 6): (24:42) The ARI says that from the moment he passes away, not to be engaged in that wisdom, because they did not understand it properly. The question is, Bnei Baruch, the world Kli in general, do we understand you?

M. Laitman: You can continue, and suppose, God forbid, I won't be able to talk to you anymore. It doesn't matter. You can continue, as usual, in the same ways that we study. You can continue studying, and disseminating, and teaching.

Question (PT 19): (25:25) I heard you say that society offends the Kabbalist, and that is good for him. We're also offended on the net, everywhere. We're defamed. How does that advance us?

M. Laitman: Sure does, because by that, by them wanting to rob you, as if rob us, they nonetheless get some kind of spark from us, from sanctity, and that's what corrects them. They can't receive the reforming light in any other way, and therefore, when they come, and they actually want to bother you and do something to you, it's in relation to their ego, in relation to their corruption, but in the meantime, they're getting something from you. They couldn't do it in any other way, and that corrects them, and gradually, they advance. Therefore, you see, Baal HaSulam, too, he says, what can I do? As much as they attack me and Rashbi, you know, Rav Shimon bar Yochai, altogether, he ran away to a cave. He didn't run away from the Romans. Did the Romans know him? Did they understand anything? He ran away from the Jews that were against him, and that's how it was in all generations. The Creator, on purpose, makes this kind of separation by which the correction will come. We'll talk about this.

Student: Practical question. There are many incitements against Bnei Baruch. What do we need to do? To bend, swallow it?

M. Laitman: I don't touch it, don't hear it, don't read it. How is it in general? As if it doesn't exist.

Student: So what do we do?

M. Laitman: Continue on our path.

Student: To ignore them?

M. Laitman: Of course. Completely ignore them.

Reading: (27:45) Letter 39

I have elaborated in copying the words of Rav Chaim Vital’s book, Gate to Reincarnation, so you would see that the ARI forbade Rav Chaim Vital to teach what he had learned to others because at the time, he did not sufficiently understand what he had heard from the ARI. This is why he would not even arrange the writings he had heard from his teacher, and his successors arranged them, the third generation—Rav Yaakov Tzemach, Rav Meir HaCohen Paprash, and Rav Shmuel Vital.

Each of those compilers did not have the complete writings of the ARI because six hundred pages from the writings were stolen while Rav Chaim Vital was alive. Out of those, Rav Yaakov Tzemach compiled the majority of Tree of Life, as well as some other compositions. Rav Chaim Vital ordered another part to be buried along with him in the grave, and so they did. He left a third part as inheritance to his son, Rav Shmuel Vital, from which the famous Eight Gates were compiled.

After a long time, Rav Yaakov Tzemach assembled a large group of students, who dug the third portion out of the grave. From them the first and next editions of Tree of Life were composed, as well as Olat Tamid, and other compositions.

M. Laitman: You see in what ways all these writings were passed on. They were buried in a grave. They were in the grave. The grave was opened. They were taken out there. And from that, they arranged those books that we learn from, and each word for us is something very important and holy. Look how it is in the wisdom of Kabbalah. You will not see this in any other place, in any other thing. How many incarnations people go through and the wisdom itself. And what you're hearing here is nothing yet. There are many such stories and facts.

Reading: (30:35) Letter 39

You therefore see that each time, the compiler had only a third of all the writings, which together make up one entity and one structure. I wish it were enough, but since they had only a small portion of the writings, they did not understand the depth of the wisdom at that time, and they terribly confused the matters by not understanding how to arrange them.

Know for certain that since the time of the ARI to this day, there has not been anyone who understood the method of the ARI to the fullest, as it was easier to attain a mind twice as great and twice as holy than the ARI’s than to understand his method in which many hands fiddled—from the one who first heard and wrote them through the last compilers, while they still did not attain the matters as they are in their upper root. Thus, each inverted and confused the matters.

M. Laitman: Aside of not finding the writings and that they were missing, what they found went through many hands and each added and confused and did. And we need to just remember what happened to the writings of the Zohar 1,500 years earlier. But the Zohar that they wrote and then it was passed through everyone, who knows where it was, until these pages were found in the marketplace that were used as a wrapping, etc., etc. Every time it goes through such forms, incarnations.

Question (Volga): (33:08) When Baal HaSulam so elaborately speaks about facts that are related to the compiling of these books, where did he get this from? These are historic facts or?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes, yes, these are sources that are known to many people and it's written about it in many books, it is written. Even though that it is the 15th century, but the 15th century in the wisdom of Kabbalah, in Judaism, it's not that it's early. This is already after many thousands of years of the existence of writing that they used to write and research, and the Talmud, these are 20 volumes this big. And it was written 200 AD, sorry BC, 200 BC and many other books, too. Many books. From Adam HaRishon, who wrote the first book called Raziel HaMalach, The Secret Angel, and until the Torah, and then the Talmud, and Mishnah. In short, many books were written. And many of these books, it's written about them in many books. Suppose Rav Shimon, who prepared the book of Zohar, he has mentioned the Talmud about 2,000 times. So, it's not that it was unknown. Everything was written, everything's known, here and there, to everyone.

Question (ITA 1): (35:28) Why ARI invited Rav Chaim Vital to work alone and not with his Ten?

M. Laitman: First of all, it's forbidden for us to take this upon ourselves. Forbidden. What we have there is there. What we have here is here. The thing is that all the rest of the friends might have confused him, and to push him off the straight, direct path. That's what I think. How things really are, we'll reach the end of correction, and everything will clear up there.

Reading: (36:41) Letter 39

And now, by the Creator’s will, I have been rewarded with a conception [impregnation] of the soul of the ARI, not because of my good deeds but by a higher will. It is beyond me, too, why I have been chosen for this wonderful soul, with which no one has been granted since his passing until today. I cannot elaborate on this matter as it is not my way to discuss the concealed, but I did find it my duty to ease your mind because ... before a flow of great water from servants that burst out at their master and expel from their water mire and dirt, to fall under the work that their animate soul has worked, since they still did not completely understand how to separate it from the spiritual soul. You should know that one must not fear such forces, which spring forth only to wash away all holiness, and the Creator saves us from them.

M. Laitman: So, there are many things here that can't be told, that we can't understand, and therefore we need to accept them as they unfold. We'll try. We'll try to nonetheless advance according to the conditions that were presented with.

Reading: (38:32) Letter 39

I think you will believe me, as it has never been my way to fabricate, exaggerate, or pursue respect and gain a name among the fools, which, until today, I have tolerated and had no desire to even fight with them.

To reinforce your not being confused by their armies of the Sitra Achra [other side], I will give you a clear sign that we received from the ARI, by which to know who is a true righteous and who is not a true righteous, but is worthy of being righteous, for which he should be treated respectfully, too. Do you believe that we should cast lots [flip a coin] about it,

to know who is serving the Creator and who is not? After all, the signs and the tokens do not determine in this matter, as is known among the Hassidim, so it is a lot that we need, God forbid.

Rather, know that Rav Chaim Vital asked the ARI that question, and it is explained in the book Gate of the Holy Spirit, the seventh of the Eight Gates by the ARI, page 1. Here are his words, word for word: “The sign that my teacher gave me was to see if all his words come true, or if all his words are for the Creator, and he will not be wrong in even one of his words (relating to a letter that he learns from his friend, that he needs, etc., as it is known to those who know the wisdom of the hidden). He should also know the secrets of Torah and how to explain them, and then we can definitely believe in him.” Rav Chaim Vital ends with this sign, and these are his words, verbatim: “According to his words we can know and recognize his greatness and merit to the extent of his knowledge.”

The explanation is as previously written, that when a person is righteous and Hassid, and engages in Torah and prays intently, angels and holy spirits are created out of him. This is the meaning of “One who performs one Mitzva [commandment] has acquired for himself one advocate.” The follies that come out from his mouth become a chariot to the souls of the first righteous, to go down to teach Torah to that man.

He also says there that if the Mitzvot [commandments] are incomplete, incomplete angels and spirits are made of it, which are called “tellers.” It is about that that he gave the above-mentioned sign that if the Torah and Mitzvot are complete, he is rewarded with complete attainment and knows how to explain all the secrets of Torah. If he is lacking in it, meaning knows how to explain only some of them, his works are certainly incomplete.

Indeed, all those who can be my adversaries, it is because they do not even understand my words, so how can they be deemed complete righteous? Thus, I have given you a clear sign.

I have already written you that my book needs no endorsements because I did not add even a single word to the words of the ARI, and I have also given references to every single concept, showing their place in the writings of the ARI, and the ARI does not need the endorsement of our contemporaries. I did this deliberately, seeing the ways of the Sitra Achra against me in advance. My own work and additions in all those two commentaries are hardly recognizable. Thus, how will they hold out the campaign against this notebook? If they do have complaints about my teaching, and I am more proficient in the writings of the ARI than they are, this is not an argument. They should not have spent their time on vanities; they had time to study the words of the ARI, and since they folded their hands idly, now they will eat their own flesh.

My regards to you and to ... and ... Tell him that all his ways are as this deed, whose intention is good but the deeds are not good, and everything follows the act. But what can I do to him? He is my flesh and blood. Therefore, let him inform me in great detail the whole story and how it unfolded from beginning to end, and I will reply to him.

I also ask that you will let me know your thoughts about this letter, and more of what is happening among them in great detail and elaborately, for I need to know all the details in order to maintain the shield, for the work of the Creator is no small matter.

M. Laitman: Yes, thus far is the letter. It's a relatively long letter, very special one, that as you see, it touches upon many things that here, here, and there that we want to know, but still, these things are mostly hidden.

Question (Piter): (46:01) Sounds from the letter that there's no point in searching for anything outside of the writings of the ARI, it's enough to understand what he writes, and you have everything you need there.

M. Laitman: Again, please repeat.

Student: Sounds from the letter that Baal HaSulam says that the entire wisdom exists in ARI's writings, you don't need to take any other direction or do anything else, you understand the ARI, you understand everything.

M. Laitman: Right, on the one hand. On the other hand, to that, we need to add the spiritual work of the Baal Shem Tov, as Baal HaSulam writes, and then, by the two, do we really reach the end of correction? Without a problem, we don't need any additional book, or commentary, or anything in addition.

Question (Moscow 1): (47:22) In what ARI describes here, who is the righteous? It is not clear here about one letter received from a friend.

M. Laitman: No, no, no, it's written that one letter, in Hebrew, also means sign, so here it's not, it doesn't mean letter, but it means sign, that it is enough to understand the one rule, which is love another as yourself, in order to reach love the Creator, your God. If he learns it from a friend, then he reaches the Creator.

Question (Woman Moscow 8): (48:25) What characterizes, or what is ARI's contribution to the wisdom of Kabbalah, and what differentiates him from other Kabbalists?

M. Laitman: Without ARI, there is no Kabbalah, as simple as that, because the Book of Zohar is completely concealed, you can't understand anything in it, but only after we study the writings of ARI, can we understand what the Zohar says. And without ARI, we don't have a key to the upper world, and we don't have the ability to come closer to the Creator.

Question (PT 7): (49:05) What does it mean to achieve the root? There were other Kabbalists too, until Baal HaSulam, or like Ramchal, who commentated the ARI.

M. Laitman: True, there were Kabbalists, great Kabbalists too, the Ramchal himself was a great Kabbalist, but nonetheless, it's after the ARI, and not before. Meaning, we don't have a greater Kabbalist, a more important Kabbalist than the ARI. Baal HaSulam, he brought ARI closer to us and interpreted the ARI. And after Baal HaSulam, we understand what ARI wrote, what we need to understand, what he wants for us to understand as to how to attain the Creator through the ARI. Without Baal HaSulam, we can't understand the ARI. And without the ARI, we couldn't advance through the ladder of the spiritual degrees.

Question (Woman PT): (50:13) How do you reach love another as yourself towards someone who hates you? How does a Kabbalist protect himself from additional hate that can destroy the path?

M. Laitman: We do not relate to those that want to harm us. We pay no attention to them. We simply turn our back on them. We don't want to know them. We don't want to answer them. We don't want to get into any kind of connection with that, whoever that is.

Question (Nahariya): (50:49) How will we know who to fight and who to accept?

M. Laitman: We have groups, and in the groups, we need to connect. With all the rest of the people, we don't connect, but only disseminate to them what the wisdom of Kabbalah talks about.

Question (Woman PT 7): (51:14) What is it about a Kabbalist passing on secrets before he passes away? Are these important things that he couldn't pass earlier, pass on?

M. Laitman: You will not incorporate in it. You won't need to deal with it. So leave it be. A Kabbalist passes away, so he does. That's it. Don't worry. When you'll need to receive something, you will. Before he passes away, after he passes away, it doesn't matter. Don't worry. There are many ways to the Creator, to the place.

Question (Woman 18): (51:59) Can students be ready for the passing away of the teacher? And how should the students build themselves in order to not lose connection with the teacher after he passes away?

M. Laitman: The students can never be ready for the departure of the teacher, ever. It always comes like a big blow from above, but they need to be ready in their organization that all in all, their teacher is the group, their group that they study together from the writings like we studied from Baal HaSulam and Rabash. You learn from me, and that's how you need to continue. And then, for sure, you will be kept from any harm, etc.

Question (PT 18): (53:02) Baal HaSulam says that if we keep the truth, it will keep us from all problems on the way. My question is, what rules do we need to abide by in order to follow the path of truth that will help us stick to the truth?

M. Laitman: What do you think that I'm going to tell you something new today?
