The Study of the Ten Sefirot

Part Five

The Ten Sefirot of Akudim in the second expansion called “Matei and Not Matei” [expanding and not expanding]

39. Let us return to the matter that when it returns to being not Matei in Keter, it is then Matei in Hochma, and light of Hochma descends in it. Then the seven sons in Bina are grown and do not need their mother.

At that time, Bina ascends to Hochma due to her desire to adhere to her. This is called “not Matei in the light of Bina.” After that, the vessel of Bina turns her anterior downward, the seven lights in her descend, and all are given to Hesed face-to-face.

Reader: We'll read 39 again.

Re-Reading: Let us return to the matter that when it returns to being not expanding in Keter, it is then expanding in Hochma, and the light of Hochma descends in it. Then the seven sons in Bina are grown and do not need their mother. At that time, Bina ascends to Hochma due to her desire to adhere to her. This is called not expanding in the light of Bina. After that, the vessel of Bina turns her interior downward. The seven lights in her descend, and all are given to Hesed, face-to-face.

Reader: Let's start the lesson.

RABASH (Source Text/Commentary): (02:46) Now, let's say that the third stage or the fourth stage again happens without expanding in Keter. Meaning, phase four-three, refined, and again an expansion in Hochma, three upon two. Then I could say that also phase three in the vessel of Hochma refined, and there are two phase twos, and the degree that was there, or did it also depart? So, now we say that there is one degree, which the light that came out on phase two of coarseness, if I say it had two bits in Hochma, it has a degree of the light that came out on the two bits, and they both divided with the light of the male of the two phase twos. So, when we say that it expanded in Hochma, it means that it also expanded in Bina. It would give to Bina that same light of Hochma at the same time. So, phase one that Bina has from the previous rule, it got an illumination of Hochma, but she couldn't give Zeir Anpin. Why?

Because it is phase two. And Zeir Anpin is phase one, so how could it receive phase two? So we learn, it's a bit difficult to learn, but after Hochma, which is expanding in Hochma and illuminating in Bina, then Bina refines. So, we ask a question: how did Bina refine, and Hochma still didn't?

We could say, and he explains, that there is a need. Not yet, look above. At that time, Bina ascends to Hochma. Why didn't it say that it refined? Due to her desire to adhere to her. Meaning, because of the desire, so she refined. That as if Hochma wants here, even though we say that Bina is Chafetz Chesed, he is saying the opposite. Why is he saying that? No, he says that there is a desire in Hochma; that's what's written.

That's one. So, since she refined from phase two to phase one because of that need, that it wants to rise to Hochma, so he tells us that Bina had the second degree instead. It refined from phase two, so it can always ascend. Where does it rise above to the vessel of Hochma?

So, we find that by annulling itself in phase two, and also the smaller phase, phase one, by that it ascends to the upper one, as we learn, that phase three and two refined, that was in the vessel of Hochma, called expanding in Hochma, or expanding in Keter. By what? That ZON of Hochma ascended to Keter. Same thing, you could say that Bina ascends to Hochma because of the refining, as he says that Hochma ascended to Keter because of the refining. But why did it refine? Not because of the control of the screen, but it refined because it wanted to annul on its own phase and to ascend upward to receive Hochma. So what do I gain from this?

RABASH (Source Text/Commentary): (07:50) So, I can say, that it refined from two to one, and gives the Hassadim. By that, there's Hochma and Hochma, the Hesed, or if I say that phase two refined, two upon two refined, so how could Hochma expand, expanding in Hesed? That's why he wants to explain.

It's difficult here. If the refining of the screen, how could the vessel of Hochma, which is phase three-two, is in a certain degree, and the vessel of Bina, which is phase two refined to phase one, two phases, phase and Hesed. So, the order of the refining of the screen is always the same order.

First, it has to refine from the vessel of Hochma, phase three, then phase two. So, we have to say that they're still late in the vessel of Hochma. So, how did the vessel of Bina refine, and Hochma remain at its place, illuminating Hochma and downward to the vessel of Bina? If I explain that because of the need to adhere, you can already explain it, but we'll see in a bit, we'll see onward. Is it clear till now? So, we always start from the refining. How? If we refine degree two, if two wasn't refined, so we always learn. If we start in Partzuf Galgalta, so, what do we learn? Who refines first?

Student: Four, then three, then two.

RABASH: So, from here you learn that two refined upon one and two, and it still remains at its place. So, that's difficult. We'll learn it in a bit.

RABASH (Source Text/Commentary): (10:08) That the two phase two that is in the vessel of Bina, it's called phase two of male and phase two of female. It gave birth to a degree called Hey. Phase four is the GAR, that's the female, and the Vav is the light, the expanding of the abundance, which is only VAK. In that Hey, it gives below to the vessel of Zeir Anpin. We'll learn that later.

Student: He's talking about the state of three?

M. Laitman: No, more, otherwise there is no face-to-face. If he gives you a reason for it to be face-to-face.

Student: And now that there's a…

RABASH: There is yet another precision here. In fact, the phase of Bina is from the root of the direct light, the phase of the posterior of Hochma. This is the meaning of the Yud and Nun of Tzadik. We can see in a corporeal drawing of the way the letter Tzadik looks, being opposite to one another in their position as it is written in the Zohar Bereshit. It is also as the ARI implies here in the meaning of, because he desires mercy, meaning that Bina creates Hassadim more than Hochma, and therefore had to rise to the vessel of Hochma so as not to stop at the light of Hesed with her posterior, and then the light of Hesed can receive a greater illumination. Not from Bina; only from Hochma. That's because of what he wrote above.

RABASH (Source Text/Commentary): (12:18) You can see in item 39, afterwards. It's written there, then the seven sons of Bina are grown and do not need their mother. Okay, at that time, Bina ascends to Hochma. Why? Due to her desire to adhere, meaning she wants Hochma, right? She wants Hochma. So what's written here? Since Bina, her need for mercy, that's why she ascended to Hochma. It's opposite than what's written above.

If it was written above that it ascends upward because of the need for the sons, I'd understand. It's not written that way. Due to her desire to adhere to her. So, we have to say, why did she have the need, or the need of the sons? So it turns out that the Bina wasn't refined because of the beating of the surrounding light. Just because Bina, from the need of the sons, so Bina annuls her own phase, which is Hassadim, and ascends to receive Hochma for the sake of the sons.

As we learned that Zeir Anpin and direct light do not go out until Bina connects to Hochma. That's possible. You can hint that the Torah does not exist unless someone, only on whoever brings himself to death upon her. That means that she annuls, she annuls her own phase and ascends to Hochma. We find that Bina becomes phase one in order to bestow to the sons.

RABASH (Source Text/Commentary): (15:56) In order to bestow to the sons. So, let's explain this. In this way, if we say that Hochma has phase two expanding in Hochma. Let's say that Bina ascends to Hochma, and she has phase two, meaning why should it be phase one? So, it should be from a different reason. So, what is a different reason? I want to explain this. The fact that Bina ascended to Hochma because of the sons, without the Hochma, I can't be born. To give birth to the sons she has to be in phase one.

That's why I say, like the ARI said, the ARI explains that the Torah cannot exist only in the one who brings himself to death upon her. And he explained that means that Bina and Torah is Zeir Anpin. Again, let's look at part 12, it's the same thing I can explain here. That's why Bina must turn herself from two to phase one in order for there to be equivalence of form with Zeir Anpin; otherwise, she can't give. So, who refines her? She wants to give to the sons; who refines her?

So Rabash says, what does it mean, refine? First of all, we have to understand what it is. How do we say that she did not extend the light on phase two of coarseness, only on phase one of coarseness? That's called refining, that it doesn't use the bigger coarseness. So, there are two reasons: one that it can't, there's no choice, the screen annulled it. Or it can be worse, the will to receive in order to receive annulled the screen and that causes the shattering.

So, we have to understand that Bina, because of her choice for the sons, that is choice or is that necessity? Is that choice? We have to understand that now there are three discernments:

 1) when we say that by the surrounding light annulling the screen, that's called that there is no choice, that it can't use, there's no force to overcome. Or you could say that the will to receive, just as it was in the world of Nekudim, was mixed and couldn't aim in order to bestow. That's why it couldn't receive the light, and the vessel shattered. Or you could say here that when she refines, she does not use phase two, only phase one. Why? For the sake of the sons; it's only choice. The Torah does not exist, only whoever brings death to her, that's choice, student.

Student: But it's two actions; rising to Hochma is one action.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: There's two reasons here.

M. Laitman: No, it's two actions for one connection on one reason, and it's for the sons. You're asking good, meaning there are two actions for the sake of the sons. In order for the sons, Zeir Anpin has to come out. One, Bina has to receive Hochma, not that. One is that Bina receives, that's one. Two, that she needs… We have to say it differently. He tells us two things. One, we'll see in the ARI’s words.

RABASH (Source Text/Commentary): (20:22) Well, let's begin again. Item 39. It's okay. Let's repeat it. 39. Let us return to the matter that when it returns to being not expanding in Keter, it is then expanding in Hochma. So, I know that there is a light of Hochma. And light of Hochma descends in it, in the vessel of Hochma.

Then, the seven sons in Bina are grown and do not need their mother. Why? When Hochma illuminates to the degree, the Hochma illuminates in the vessel of Bina. Okay? What next? At that time, Bina ascends to Hochma due to her desire to adhere to her. We learned, what is the meaning of her desire to adhere to her?

So, we need to add the desire. We should say, since Bina has a desire for the son because she's their mother, and since Bina has a need to be their mother and give birth to them, that's why we say that you need to ascend to adhere to her with Hochma. What does it mean that he has to adhere to her? That the son, she needs to ascend upward. And she needs to ascend upward to adhere to Hochma.

He gives us two reasons: 1) since she's at her place, she controls with Hassadim, since there's Hochma, so the sons cannot receive the light of Hochma. That's why she needs to annul her own self. That means that she's rising up.

2) When it ascends upward means that it annuls its phase two, meaning she annuls her own self, in a sense, as we say, that the refining of the screen, so the screen can ascend upward and remain in Bina below. Which phase? Phase one.

So there's equivalence of form. Then she can give, face-to-face, the lights. We find here a different way we have to learn. Before it had Hochma, the sons are already grown, but she can't receive the light. Why? Because Bina is called Chafetz Chesed. So, she needs to annul herself for the sake of the sons. That's why she ascends to Hochma, meaning annuls herself in Hassadim, but receives the correction of Hochma. That's one.

2) Since there should be equivalence of form in face-to-face, one with one, and Bina with two, so there's another explanation that in order to ascend, she needs to have one, and not two. We find that when she ascended upward, it was because of the refining of the screen of surrounding light, only the phase itself because of the needs of the son. And this way, you can already understand it. The light of Hesed, first it was a baby for the sake of the mother now gets a bigger illumination not from Bina, but from Hochma.
