Baal HaSulam. The Freedom (A Path of Torah and a Path of Suffering)
Reading (00:30) “Path of Torah and Path of Suffering…”
1 R. Meaning like it or not we have no business to think or to decide we have to advance or not to advance and even how to advance rather it is certain that by these two paths we get to the goal and our choice, what are we choosing more, the path of Torah or the path of suffering but in truth progress always happens and we're moving either with our desire or without it towards that general goal, the final goal.
2. S. (02:19) What to do if a friend is angry because the Creator is showing him the friends are disregarding the work, what should he pray for?
R. First of all I think that you talk amongst yourself why is he so furious, why does he see so many flaws in them that makes him angry, maybe scrutinize why the Creator is giving him such a picture, how he sees the situation. It’s possible maybe he’s right and maybe not that’s something else but the question is after he sees this, should he perhaps say that what he sees is he who judges does so with his own flaws. I's the Creator whose bringing him this picture and he needs to correct himself relative to this picture, correct his vision, his perception and if he cannot do it then he needs to turn to the Creator and for the Creator to correct this picture, that he will see the world in such a way that the whole world will appear to him as corrected. Only he is not corrected to the extent that he feels the others as flawed since each one judges according to his own flaws. So there's a lot to do here it's not just what to do with a friend we can do much deeper work, wider work ,group level work, do that, turn to Him again, that's how we will advance what to do. So what does he tell us, we have before us a path of Torah and the path of suffering, two paths bring us to correction, to the end of correction, the revelation of the Creator to the created being completely, where the Creator fills us as the upper light that fills all of our vessels. This is called the end of correction we will learn about it from the first act in the wisdom of Kabbalah of the shattering, when we correct the shattering, the upper light returns to all the vessels and according to the level of the vessels they are, as we say, 620 times more powerful and the upper light fills them completely and this is called the end of correction of creation.
3. S. (05:44) You mentioned in the beginning of this part that even though we are standing on the path of suffering and the path of light but we haven't reached it yet?
R. Because we can't see clearly ahead of us how to advance when I react each and every moment to what I am feeling, I am already taken on the path it’s impossible that I’m not moving on them. Even humanity moves on those paths but much slower and in an unconscious manner but I am already much more conscious about changes I'm going through and how I'm advancing towards the revelation of the Creator and all its power.
So my attitude towards it is different and I wish to advance on the path of Torah in place of the path of suffering and here we need to understand what is the path of Torah and I advance on the path of the light. Of course who doesn't like it but for that I need to perform corrections on myself and each and every state so the light will enter the corrected vessel and by that I'm advancing another step forward and again I have a problem and again I scrutinize it and again I draw the reforming light and I correct my will to receive to be in order to bestow above my ego and I annul myself before the Creator and the upper light and then He corrects me and I’m performing an action in order to bestow. I take the next step and each step forward includes many elements, many actions until we, until we take each and every step and that is how we advance from one step to another Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Chaya and Yechida in each world of the five worlds 125 degrees in total.
4. S. (08:16) From all of the actions that we do, what is the most correct action that we need so we are on track?
R. Not to forget that we're on the path and each moment, every state we can advance in the right direction, if not, if we do not advance in the right direction we will do it but incorrectly and incorrectly means we’re getting lost. We don't know where, what and how this increases the path, makes it more longer that's what I say that, there’s a short path and the long path. Because on the long path we need actions before we understand it's not good and it's not worthwhile, we're just burning time, we need to work more concisely on coming closer between us and advancing, that’s how we need to advance.
S. Work that is more condensed or concentrated what does it mean?
R. The concentrated work in order to shorten the path is together.
5. S. (10:04) When you look at human development so far, where can point to a point where humanity developed in the path of Torah or it’s still ahead of us?
R. What we have today in all sorts of situations, technical influence, scientific influence, this is a result of the general progress of humanity which is the result of humanity's spiritual development. Except it is not clear to us, it is not revealed to us, but nevertheless that is how we advance, humanity is advancing and that everywhere and not in every state. Humanity, also suddenly expanded four times, five times more in the last hundred years. So what has to be for one person is now distributed over four or five people but if we look at it as one thing because we finally eventually come to one image in Adam HaRishon, one form that we need to understand. That advancement is there except it’s not clarified before people, humans technically somehow culturally, educationally, there are many forms of development but not spiritually. Spiritually it is still concealed because for that we need all those people among whom spirituality is distributed, they need to connect more and I hope it will happen soon.
6. S. (12:31) Creation as it develops can’t get to know the final form of development and we in human development, we don't see the final goal, usually we only understand in retrospect that we made a wrong decision we were in the dark we don't see anything so how can we keep going this way?
R. Until we feel the recognition of evil in our nature and wish to change our nature that takes us from darkness to darkness and it is not even because we are absorbing all these blows along the way but rather because it is simply not suitable for our lives and for us to be in such a lowly state such a moral state and gradually humanity's ready to suffer but what does it mean to suffer? To suffer in order to advance, to suffer in order to raise itself to a higher degree of existence, let's say they want to understand more, to feel more although for that in exchange we were willing to pay with discomfort, certain things that will interfere with our lives later but through these interferences we will come to attaining the truth, seeing the truth. That’s always the case, you have to pay for anything or everything you wish to obtain. Humanity is gradually coming closer to it instead of closing our eyes and advancing like animals in the woods we are willing nevertheless to advance towards the truth.
S. For instance the world is on the verge of third world war but still there is no recognition that something exceptional is happening. We, studying the wisdom of Kabbalah so the Kabbalists through the sources explain to us how things are developing but the main mass of humanity doesn't see it and feels things differently so we have to suffer so much just to come to some recognition I don't know how it can happen?
R. First of all it will certainly happen and let’s hope it doesn't happen through a third and a fourth world war and near total inhilation of humanity. Rather Baal HaSulam writes about it, Kabbalists don’t hide the fact that it can be this kind of path or that kind of path and somewhere in the middle along the spectrum of states. Let's hope that we will advance in the correct path, the good path, it depends after all on the correction of man, on raising the nature of man, each one to some extent about himself. It’s now becoming apparent in Russia, later it can become revealed in Europe. We don't know how many corrections Europe needs, we think that everything is already passed, everything is corrected, no, nothing is corrected, no.
Except the Russians have to correct themselves, their attitude towards life, the purpose of life, the essence and meaning of life and to open their eyes to the fact that they're not corrected. Later there will be other nations who will also think this way that there is more to correcting them as well and that is how the world will advance. 7. S. (18:11) Question about the concentrated work, is that work that eventually tires you? The path is long so how should a person on the path act when he feels as he deserves a rest. What’s your advice, how to aim yourself again to the same concentrated work?
R. We need to see our lives at all the years of our life every single day we advance and we become corrected some of the corrections are done by us in the ten some are from the Creator and in this way we are corrected and that’s how it works until the end of correction so don't get excited too much but continue consistently and persistently each and every day and whatever you come to you come to that’s it. It is still much more effective, beneficial, good than a regular person corrects himself from any nation from any part of the world. That is the way it is. So let’s just continue.
S. Maybe I don't understand something. I need to aim myself to stability even if I want to rest, I can rest but keep going?
R. Of course our work is for all of our lives throughout life ideally it should begin at age thirteen and continue toward the rest of your life until the person's last minute and if need be continue in the next life and more and more until he achieves his complete correction. That is the work and it is the same with all of the humanity do you think all the people who exist existed and will exist those who are born today and tomorrow and the day after tomorrow et cetera they're only corrections but there are corrections that are unconscious and some corrections are conscious we are conscious we can also participate in the corrections and accelerate the corrections but our spiritual evolution is already in our hands.
8. S. (21:44) When you answered the friend's question the translator said that now the Russians need to correct themselves with their attitude towards life. If he said it correctly, did he say it correctly? What I heard from the translators that the Russians have to correct themselves with their attitude towards life, is that exactly what you said, so if yes, in what exactly should Russians correct themselves?
R. Now it is the part of the population of the world where Russian people has to correct itself and raise itself to a higher level than where it was and afterwards there will be other nations that’s how it works this is why I said immediately along with it that Europe too will soon come to it. Don't think I’m not saying that Europe is higher compared to the Russian people et cetera it also it’s not related to culture it is related to feeling of humanity why it exists what for what is happening and mainly it is with respect of the ego of each and every nation in imposing its force on other nations I think that the Russian people still has a problem that it wants to govern to control the neighboring nations and this is completely contradictory to the spiritual development spiritual development doesn't tolerate any oppression any oppression.
I am forbidden to tell anyone anything other than to set a good example that’s it and here it is all done by force I'm not talking about toward Ukrainians but in general toward the other nations and small nations and other neighbors there needs to be some introspection here and to change the attitude the attitude really has to be friendly and not with pressure. Sorry for saying it but because we are engaged in corrections I therefore have to say it and each one should also self-examine to what extent he is putting pressure in the group and his people and the neighbors et cetera each one should go deeper into himself and begin there in himself to perform corrections corrections of the soul.
9. S. (25:34) You were speaking about incarnations and we know that everything left in our life are the actions we did for bestowal but is there a thread that connects us from one incarnation to the next until Gmar Tikkun can we know how or from which bodies to which bodies we went through or which situation?
R. For now you cannot know about it because you don’t feel the general template, the general vessel of Adam HaRishon where you are what is the root of your soul, what you should achieve according to the plan of creation. Although you connect to all of creation and you become truly as one with them but still, until then, you seemingly have to pull after you the whole vessel of Adam HaRishon to the end of correction. In other words, your goal and your existence is to take all the souls and pull them after you to the point of complete connection which is the final correction and likewise each and everyone and this is basically your duty.
S. What’s the reason that we’re not aware of this? Does the Creator do it on purpose? That we won’t know?
R. Usually we get awareness and feelings of what we need for now, to advance, to take the next step and not more it will confuse us. Look at little children they don't know how they will think and feel in a year or two, what they have now that’s what they should develop that’s it and the same goes for spirituality in corporeality it confuses us we think that the whole world is before us and we are already it’s also not like that and we make mistakes but in spirituality you can advance only one step forward and also gradually partially each step.
Because you need to acquire it, you need to bring it into you, you need to make changes in your internal structure, how do I relate to reality, to people, to myself and mainly to the Creator. In every new state try today during the day to see how you change by wanting to establish a new relation to the group and to the Creator. These are our spiritual discernments first the group and within the group, the Creator, so how you establish a new relation to the group and to the Creator, how you change by this, try it. If I do this how do I change if I do differently how do I change them try to think this way, fantasize. Then you will see how it will change you but we are making progress I see according to the questions and according to what people write me.
10. S. (30:07) What you just said about the corrections, does it mean that every friend for instance needs to see inside himself how he starts the war, how he wants to control someone in the ten or Bnei Baruch or the world, and ask the Creator to correct that desire?
R. Of course, yes.
S. So what you're saying about Russians is a quality in each one of us, right? And another question, can I look at the corporeal world, what is happening in it as a result of an accumulation of prayers from all the people, whether they're aware or not? Meaning if people want it, it can happen.
R. Yes, of course. What we're going through, we're going through it through a higher illumination from above and that upper light is a light of bestowal and love. From day-to-day, from moment to moment, more and more it shines on us. It is like a star that is getting closer to us, approaching us. As it approaches we feel ourselves in all kinds of psychological forms, relationships between us, in families, in everything. We feel changes but all those changes are basically the Creator getting closer to us, just like a star that is approaching Earth. As a result we are feeling changes. Now if we connect among us in the ten then we can already come into internal contact with that star; why is it here, what it wants from us, what should we do, how we should approach it, how can we understand it, connect with it more internally. This is called I to my beloved and my beloved to me in a mutual connection with the Creator. Because if we unite then we no longer bestowing upon it, which it is clear we are, but we already absorb from it what it sends us, and in this way we can advance more clearly.
11. S. (33:11) So we need to understand that the Creator coming closer to us is depicting these pictures? He’s obligating us to reach the purpose of creation?
R. Of course, everything is done by the Creator getting closer to us. If He didn't get closer to us we wouldn't feel any changes, we would be like the still, the inanimate. Because that is what the will to receive wants, not to change in any way, not to do anything, not to feel any deficiencies. All advancement is through revealing deficiencies. I feel a deficiency, I go to satisfy it, I feel another deficiency I go to satisfy that nd this is what we want. As Baal HaSulam writes, if a person didn't feel deficiencies he would not move his hand from the table to the chair throughout his life. That’s it, that is our nature. This is why we need to by ourselves, through connection between us cause our movements. This is mainly where we help each other because the friends help me make movements. We also see it in the world in general, how people look at each other, they envy them, envy, lust and honor, it moves them from their place to a new place.
12. S. (35:07) Lately you don't want to use your mind as it says in Shamati 14 in order to find the answers. You just said that you can hear the Creator's answers. Maybe at least if you could explain a bit how?
R. Well there are two options here. Option number one is for a person to be incorporated in the ten. There are those for whom it is easier and there are those for whom it is very difficult and therefore there is another option, for a person to simply try not to activate his will to receive. To be like we can imagine people who are living in the jungle, what are they called?, who became disconnected from human society and in this way they want to cancel their will to receive as much as possible. Then they begin to criticize. If they are activating their will to receive to what extent they keep it only to the necessary things, in order to exist and other than that it is in order to bring contentment to the Creator.
So that if they do anything beyond necessity then it is only in the direction of the Creator. They kind of divide their actions into two parts, the necessary part, which is neither praise nor condemned, there is no judgment on it, and the point beyond the necessary where he activates himself but in order to bring contentment to the Creator. The necessary part is called the restriction and the part above it is when he acts in order to bestow. Try to do all kinds of actions like this and see where you are in them. And in this way we will be able to advance.
13. S. (39:00) I wanted to ask about the last question that summarizes this topic, you were speaking about aware prayers and unaware prayers. So our current task of the last generation the purpose is to discover this aware prayer in order to disseminate it as broadly as possible, so we can reach the broadest mass possible, so people will understand what we are praying for and who’s praying, is that right?
R. I don't think that if we talk about prayers people will be able to understand this correctly. Because for them a prayer is already connected to all kinds of rituals and many people who come into prayer halls or some places, so I don't think it's good it we talk about it. For us too a prayer….what does it mean to pray? It’s the work in the heart. Here how can you check it, how can you explain it to people? It is all through years of learning and beginning to feel more and more how his ego can be directed toward the Creator or not, to the friends or not, etcetera. We can't go out to the general public and talk to them about prayer, no.
S. Also a question about what I feel, the attitude towards the prayer, it’s not always clear what we're doing. And it is clear that this influence of the environment, they treat prayers as like mumbling these nice words and mantras. And there is a desire that in the ten we can add this feeling, that what we are actually doing here is about building the intention, the thought, the perception…
R. Look, the wisdom of Kabbalah spoke about it a little bit thousands of years ago, and then stopped. Because Kabbalists saw that the foundations of the wisdom of Kabbalah, the customs of the wisdom of Kabbalah which spread through the common people who don't have the inclination to attainment of the Creator, to connection with the Creator, these regular people turned various customs of Kabbalists into external, superficial customs. They built prayer halls which gather people and organize them into prayers, they do all kinds of festivals, holidays, but it's nothing but externality.
This is why Kabbalists went into concealment and stopped talking and writing and in general being in this. It remained for religions and therefore today we are very, very far from it. We have no rituals, no customs and it is all internal, a person's relation to the Creator through the friends, which is basically the only way.
This is what we keep, this is where we act toward the upper Force and it operates back to us in return and to go out and talk with them about prayers and customs, even about love, they will not understand us, they will not understand. We need to disseminate but in such a way that it draws people who want to discover the Creator. Discover, not just turn to Him but discover, to reveal the Creator, so that such people will approach us and learn how to do it. But to reveal, it has nothing to do with prayers, with customs, with festivals or anything. This is where we act. Meaning we want to increase only the number of people, of friends who are engaged in the wisdom of Kabbalah, which is the revelation of the Creator to a person in this world.
S. So we're studying about the Partzuf, the Rosh, the Guf how….
R. I don't understand you. For the great masses to look at us? They will look at us as engaging in connection between us in love of friends to reveal the Creator. When they really come closer to us and want to know what is happening to us, what we want, what we're doing, then the world will be different. Don't worry, the Creator is arranging from above such processes that when the nations of the world begin to think what is happening to us then the Creator will shine for them through us the understanding, so they will understand that we engage only in getting closer to the Creator. This is what humanity needs.
14. S. (46:09) I'm now in Central Russia for 10 days, a tiny village and people who have any work are just happy. There’s a feeling that I'm the only one who is lacking something. It seems like nothing is lacking and I wander around and I think that I'm not bringing anything to people in my search and so on. Where are we, where are people? It is like two different lives and I don't understand. After what you said yesterday that soccer is great so I'm even more confused and I don't understand, where are we?
R. We are the top layer of humanity which searches for contact with the upper force. With that layer of nature that governs and determines all of nature and all of the humanity. So we belong to it because of our desire. This is how we were created, how we were born, how we developed. You see you have people here from all over the world in our group and there are others like it and this is our work. The Creator gave us a desire in the heart to come in contact with Him and we implement it, we act on it. Each one is acting on the desire in his heart. Those people that you meet in the middle of Russia, they want nothing other than to work, rest and this is their life, and just to go through life this way. Who knows? In this life, in the next life they will have other questions. This is how it evolves.
15. S. (48:47) You told a friend from Moscow that we take our necessities doing restrictions and suffering and you give an example for a nation that lives in the forest. What does it mean to go through torments and restrictions?
R. Never mind, you'll understand later, it's irrelevant.
S. So why did you say it to a friend? We’re trying to restrict our desires?
R. I don't understand the question.
S. You said that there's people who perform restrictions, they take necessities and only when they're sure it's necessary and then they give contentment to the Creator and bestow. Isn't that like an ancient method?
R. Yes. This is the basic method that a person uses only those fillings that are necessary for his existence and if he uses anything else it is only in order to bring contentment to the Creator. This is called restriction and acting above the restriction.
S. A person does that are the light that he draws reforms him?
R. The person summons these actions, these operations.
S. In his desire that he wants and demands it, right?
R. Yes.

17. R. (53:16) In other words following the majority is a path that is completely the opposite from progress. How can such a thing be that I follow the majority? You have a billion Chinese, a billion Indians and several other billions so I will follow them? Then what will happen? 19. S. (59:45) When he says that the whole Torah and commandments were given only in order to cleanse Israel, to refine Israel this is opposite from what he said now. So is this his shrewdness, this what he's trying to tell us?
R. He wants to tell us that eventually all of society will develop till the perfect state, that's it. But for this there are a few paths supposedly, even though everything brings us whether sooner or later toward connection.
S. So basically he's talking about how we reveal the bad in us, this is what he's talking about?
R. Of course our whole path is recognition of evil of our current state. And from that you are aimed towards the good future. You can take the next step already and the next step is connection.
S. In other words for now we're looking for self-love between us?
R. Well, whoever is or not.
20. S. (01:01:05) We see in our lives that the individuals control the society, meaning those who are connected to the Creator. In our own history are they the ones who control society?
R. We don't see in our life where an individual is running human society. Well you can say it but not that it's the correct state because what is he doing this for? He's not doing it for the many, he's doing it for the individual. That's an essential discernment. That to begin with humanity can't suffer such monarchies and all kinds of other regimes. That an individual who runs a country, a big country, all in all it's not for the benefit of the country but for his own. Only for taking care of his thought, to perform the form that he thinks is correct. So for this he sacrifices thousands and millions. For us it's not so important right now, soon we’ll have an ability and an opportunity to speak about it in a more free way. So for the social life the law is to take after the collective.

21. S. (01:05:48) Is there such a thing such an area that does not concern the life of society?
R. Well actually the system is a general system, it's round and everything is in it, so you're right there is no such thing that doesn't belong to the whole system. Each and every detail is part of the system. But there are still such states that aren't instantly or directly influencing society’s life and only belong to the area of an individual.
S. Previously he wrote that even the relationship between man and the Creator concerned the society.
R. Right.
S. And therefore even there the law is taking after the collective. And now he wrote that there is a place that does not concern the life of society and there the law of taking after the collective does not apply. So what is this place, I don't understand?
R. He doesn't write you about spiritual life but corporeal life. About spiritual life he's going to write in a minute. That in corporeal life we still don't feel ourselves included in one body and dependent on one another. But in our development you'll start feeling as much as we are in one body, in one state, in one thought, under one force from above and with our force of ego below. For that reason we humans are between two forces, from above the Creator and from below the evil inclination and we between the two of them have to determine the right connection and in that exist.
22. S. (01:08:15) In the previous excerpt he talked about developing a sense of recognition of evil. It seems like it really explains what's happening in the world in the sense that until there is true recognition by everyone that things are bad there it will be no resistance and it will continue. If that's the case then maybe it's as you said before that it's like a star approaching earth. It will continue to develop and it will be expressed between nations but the more there is a need for the freedom of the individual it will continue and advance into what is happening within nations or within smaller circles. Is this the direction that the world is going?
R. Yes or no. I still can't go into deeper explanations here. We are in the middle of the path, we need to see how the world is developing and then we'll be able to extract conclusions from this.
S. But what seems to be happening seems to be a law, a method. Nothing will happen until the majority feels, it's phrased like a law.
R. The correction has to be general and reach everyone, yes.
23. S. (01:09:49) Should the society reach some necessary minimal level of the freedom of the individual so he can develop in spirituality and if so what is that law?
R. The choice has to be for each and every one to develop to a direction that he reachs the right contact with his environment and through it to the Creator. That is what has to be here, the determining of that law. Each and every person has an ability to uplift above his ego, to incorporate in society, through society to incorporate with the Creator, and from me, society, Creator to reveal it as one system of Adam HaRishon and then when we reach it, I don't know, that's already things that are difficult for me to say anything about; they discover themselves in one system of Adam HaRishon, just as it was before the sin 620 times more. That means that the Creator is in them and they are in Him in the whole complete adhesion. That's what we have to reach. For now we are in a very special time in history where we are in the transition from the corporeal world, that we were always living in, to the spiritual world that gradually we’re starting to enter. It’s a very special state.
24. S. (01:12:13) The law of taking after the majority in corporeality, I see that in corporeality the majority makes mistakes. What do you do in such cases? Do you follow the majority or do you express your opinion and try to influence this majority?
R. I hope that we're going to reach a state, and it's not far from us that humanity, from the despair, as much as they’re receiving blows in every stage of development, and as much as they don't understand where to take the next step towards, that they will truly agree to listen to what the Kabbalists are saying. Then they can start determining for themselves tens and connect and learn there how to overcome themselves, uplift above themselves. I really hope that humanity will start thinking how they can rise above their ego. Otherwise it's impossible to keep advancing. It's such suffering that I think we're already in a stage of the last generation, that they wouldn't want to keep existing in the way they are. Meaning give birth to children, keep developing things because there's recognition of evil, there's no good benefit in this.
S. As far as Kabbalah and spirituality I agree but sometimes experts make mistakes and here the role of the Kabbalists should be to disseminate from the spiritual perspective or also relate to the corporeal aspect too? Experts make mistakes in corporeality too.
R. That's obvious. Next.

27. S. (01:21:39) When I listen to this article it's not clear how a majority that is not developed can determine what happens to the developed and even supervise them.
R. Obviously it won't take place. This has to be the right connection, the right dynamic between the general collective and a unique minority that are also talking between them, in consideration between them, and each one understands the weakness and the forces. That is in the force of quantity in the majority and the minority has the force of quality and they have to complete each other, that's it. S. It's true and correct. We are in a historic period and it’s being revealed that you can't use force any more to make any decisions. A person just can't rise and oppress a different person, not one country to the next or one regine on the other but everything has to go towards connection and only in this way everything can exist.
