Baal HaSulam. You Have Made Me in Behind and Before

1. (01:48) Let us go over this bit once more. I hope it is before all of you, the text, because it is a very important article that gives us a general relation and perspective on the guidance of the Creator and the world. Rav Reads: It is written “You have made me in behind and before meaning”, what is this about “the revelation and concealment of the face of the Creator”, where once He is revealed and once, He is concealed. This is called you have made me in behind and before “because indeed His kingdom rules overall,” meaning He operates in everything, controls everything, and in Him there is no day night, changes, all the things He takes us through in order to promote us by understanding and recognizing and being open to the upper reality like Him, meaning to know Him. The upper reality is Him. “Because indeed his kingdom rules over all” His kingdom rules over everything. Kingdom meaning His control, His governance “and everything will return to its root,” meaning we in the end we'll come to a state where everything is open, clear and we are incorporated in it, on the same level and same degree that the Creator opens up to us “because there is no place vacant of Him.”

Meaning he controls everything and every situation and gradually reveals to us according to His plan, Himself. And He reveals it to us by building us more and more, opening up to us qualities that are suitable for revealing Him, for our understanding Him, “but the difference is in the present and in the future”, that this is now, and this will happen later. These are the differences. Meaning in time “because one who connects the two worlds” meaning the concealed and revealed “discovers His clothing in the present”, now, the clothing of the Creator. What does that mean? “That everything that is done is clothing for the revelation of the Shechina”, Divinity. So, everything that is created and done within us, around us is the upper light, the light of Ein Sof, infinity, but we instead of the light of Ein Sof feel some kind of concealment. This is why it is called Olam, world from the word Olama, concealment because it is concealed. So why is it in concealment? In order to reveal the Creator, the light, the plan, the governance and guidance, His qualities, His relation to us gradually. So, that by this we will not only receive it, but we will understand, feel and be like Him, on the same level.

We will grow to truly be like Him in every detail in creation. And this is why through concealment and revelation, this is why it is called you have made me in behind and before. In concealment is considered in behind and in revelation is called in before. By this the Creator creates me, forms me, He establishes us, creates us as created beings that are built and can understand and feel and connect to Him as partners. Because there is no vacant place from Him. But the difference is in the present or in the future, meaning both the present and the future exist. The difference is that for the time being we are in the present and not in the future. That we still have many qualities, vessels that we must still correct in order to bring us to the level of the future and then feel the actual reality. Because one who connects the two worlds present and future, behind and before, discovers in the present the clothing of the Creator. What does that mean? That everything that is done is a clothing of the revelation of the Shechina, Divinity. Meaning everything we have here and now that we feel, we are feeling the future. But that future is covered by clothing, dresses, attire.

That as we learn, we study this attire, we take them on ourselves, by this we grow and become more discerning, and then we discover the Creator. it is as if we take off the clothing, the concealments from Him. We dress in them and then that concealment passes, and we reveal the Creator as He is without any concealment. So, all that is done is clothing for the revelation of the Shechina, Divinity. “This is deemed the present meaning that now too he comes out in royal attire” Nothing Is concealed, it is only from the perspective of the attaining individual. “And evidently shows to everyone that the rider is not subordinate to the horse.” Meaning we are not on this inferior low-level or something, it is all attires so we may learn how to reveal the Creator correctly. But it is not like they lower us; it is like a little child. Because he still does not attain, still does not feel, do we treat him with contempt and ridicule? On the contrary we want to do everything so that he will grow and will grow smarter and smarter and feel more and understand more and we are happy when it happens to him, right? It fills us with great joy. Just understand that this is the same that the Creator feels. “But although it seemingly appears” it seems that way, “that the horse leads its rider” that it is as if we are advancing ourselves.

“The truth is that the horse is provoked to any movement”, meaning we do not awaken to make even the slightest movement in ourselves, in our qualities, in our thoughts, you name it. In corporeality and in spirituality “the horse is provoked to any movement only by the sensation of the rider’s bridle and headstall.” Meaning through those two forces, forces of advancement and forces that stop us, right and left, where the Creator rides us and governs us in every way. In this way He advances us and according to this we advance. “This is called the construction of the structure of the Shechina”, Divinity, meaning the governance of the Creator over all of us. The upper light controls the entirety of the will to receive, and it promotes that desire until it comes to revealing Him completely and this is called “face-to-face” when all of the upper light is revealed and all the desires of the created being.

2. S. (11:56) How behind this concealment do we discover Shechina behind all of these forms?

R. You need to behave exactly as it is written that you are facing the Creator and between you and the Creator is the ten, or maybe even all of humanity, the whole of reality, the whole world, because it is clear to us that it is only an imagination. This is why it is called the world from the word concealment. Olam, world, from the word concealment, Olama. We have to make every effort to perform all of the actions, make all our states so that they are in order to reveal the truth. That besides the upper force there is none else besides Him and this is why we arrange ourselves, organize ourselves, in all of our corporeal and spiritual actions, it does not matter how you divide them. So it is as if we are already now under the complete governance of the Creator. This is basically the direction. So the concealment does not separate us. I do not want to accept the concealment. I now despite the concealment want to be as adhered to the Creator as possible in revelation.

3. S. (13:40) In what way do I hinder or distract the work of the Creator if it says that He is before me and behind me and inside me and outside of me and there is none else besides Him?

R. It is a good question but there is free choice which is not written here. Here it says that the Creator controls us in every way, 100%. If that is the case then there is no reality to a person and we are on the degrees of still, vegetative and animate. But those people, those pieces of the soul of Adam HaRishon, those pieces of the will to receive in this system of Adam HaRishon in its entirety which are in special states, they have a desire to know the Creator. Without it they have no life. For what is there to live? I do not want to be just a beast. Therefore when they fall many times into the degree of a beast and do not want to come out of it and then they return to some work of man, to be similar to the Creator, in this way we are basically developing. So we have work, although everything comes from above. But to reveal that everything comes from above with our free choice it exists only in us and those who are attracted toward truly revealing the Creator. We need to reveal the Creator in our inclination, in our tendency to equalize with Him, to be with Him in mutual connection. “I to my beloved and my beloved to me”. And then towards these people the Creator works in behind and before. Making me behind and before in concealment and revelation. By this He teaches us, educates us, rears us.

4. S. (16:20) The concealment we are talking about here, is it the fact that for me the Creator's quality is concealed?

R. I did not understand the question.

S. Asking whether the concealment is towards me?

R. The concealment is certainly towards the person. It is towards the person, towards each and every one personally. There is also general concealment like upon all the people of the world, but we will talk about that later, that is where we might get confused. Concealment is towards each and every person and we in our development need to conceal our ego, rise above it, and then discover, reveal the Creator. Then from concealment to revelation.

4. S. (17:33) I wanted to clarify in a person's spiritual path, is the concealment considered the revelation of the left line, and correspondingly the revelation of the Creator is the closest to the right line?

R. We will see that in the future. I do not want to immediately go into all the details because that can confuse a lot of people. I understand you, that you want to know, but ahead of me except for you are a few thousand people, and I want everyone to advance.

5. S. (18:17) What connects between the concealed and the hidden of the Creator?

R. The source as both for the revealed and the concealed, the source is one which places us that way. Just like you play with the child you want to hide this and reveal that, and you play with him this way and by that you want to raise up his awareness so that through all those actions and states he will get to know. So what connects between concealment and revelation is their source, the one source, the Creator, His desire, His plan, that is it.

6. S. (19:06) The fact that more and more people are born in the world, does that mean that the shattering process still continues?

R. No, the shattering already took place, there are no more but what we are revealing is the essence of the shattering more more, because to that extent that we are advancing. Meaning according to our ascent on the ladder of degrees, meaning in our corrections, we discover where else we need to perform corrections in order to connect or correct the shattering. That is a simple, mechanical way of how you can say it.

7. S. (19:55) He says you have made me in behind and before meaning both in behind and before. If you can clarify that?

R. Certainly. The concealment operates no less correctly for the development of a person than the revelation. Before every disclosure there has to be a concealment. Just like in our world, like in science, and therefore this is how we need to advance. Therefore the importance in concealment is no less important than the revelation, as we have concealment before, can we get to revelation.

S. It is clear that it is the only way. A friend is asking how do you manage to connect the world in the present and future?

R. The more I work on the concealment, the more I relate to it correctly, that the Creator is bringing me this concealment and the concealment is to my benefit, meaning I need to assemble, connect myself, my tools, my vessels in a way that I will see this concealment from within and upon this concealment reach the revelation. It is like a scientist. A real scientist takes all the things that he does not understand that he is studying and does not know what is going on there, and with all of that he wants to come to a solution, as the solution will include within it all those forms of concealment that he discovered prior to that. Then the solution will be correct. If he does not solve all the problems of the concealment, then more than likely his solution is not whole.

S. Can we say that if we do not work for the revelation but for the privilege of being a worker of the Creator and serving the friends and creation, does that mean putting on the concealment over us?

R. We robe ourselves with concealment and from that we come to revelation. That is as the left and right, it is like degrees, like steps. It is a must to be incorporated by both.

S. Within the revelation we already need to create the concealment or not?

R. We never do concealment, we only go towards revelation. The revelation we discover, we want to do this revelation in concealment. It is a very special thing where we do revelation through restriction, the screen, and the reflected light. Then in our reflected light, in our rejection, not inside the will to receive but in that which we raise the will receive in reflected light, then by that we build the Kli for the revelation of the Creator. Therefore we are not receiving in the will to receive the actual revelation but rather in the desire to receive which is included with the rejection, the reflected light and by us building a place, as we call it the place for the Divinity where we reveal the Creator. Otherwise it will be like a Keter, between the plus and minus, between the light and the desire. And if we place between us and the Creator the restriction meaning an insulation of sorts, the screen, the force of resistance, the reflected light, the correct form of connecting with the light, then the light appears within our reflected light where we connect. That is the connection of a created being with the creator.

S. It is not clear why he writes the one who merits connecting the worlds discovers in the present the clothing of the Creator.

R. Yes, for him this is the present. If he merits discovering both worlds, the front and behind, the concealed and revealed in relation, then for him his revelation is in concealment. This is what we have in spiritual revelation.

S. What is the difference between the present and the future if in the present he already makes the restriction, screen and reflected light?

R. That both connect together, that the Kli adds its power to the light 620 times.

S. I do not understand the difference, because if there is restriction, screen and reflected light then what changes in the future state?

R. Then you have the coupling and striking, the Zivug de Hakaa and the reception of the light. the direct light inside of the reflected light in order to bestow. Then you have a power of connection of the relations of the Creator and the creative being together, which is called the disclosure of love. It is still ahead of us I think, as much as I remember the article.

8. S. (25:52) In the ten there was a question. Why wasn't the past mentioned in the article? The present and future yes, but not the past?

R. What was included in the present will also be revealed more in what will be.

S. The attainment that the Creator rules over or all that everything comes from the purpose of creation does that manifest in the behavior and actions of this world?

R. In this world in our behavior here nothing is revealed. This beastly world that we are in, in our five senses, we are like animals, like beasts, we are truly like beasts. We have nothing special above animals, a little more intellect or feeling by which we spoil and destroy the world.

S. Why does the Kabbalist who perceives the purpose of creation, why does he even need to do actions in his hands and legs?

R. In truth that is a question, and it is not really understood. I understand you, it is not clear, but the problem is that we do not yet disconnect from our corporeal desire. Therefore, we have to also observe these spiritual discernments. That is only as we have yet to disconnect from the corporeal world. For the dead it is free, both in corporeality and in spirituality.

9. S. (27:49) How to combine this work where we see everything is under His rule and the work of being in bestowal?

In spiritual Dvekut in place of corporeal Dvekut. The concealment raises us from one degree to another and if I look with my corporeal eyes, it is certain that I see corporeality. Here I need to understand that this form of the world, which is called concealment from the world, Olam from the word Olama, concealment. For then I need to rise to connection between us to a state that we will truly begin to connect between us forms of connection that are such that will give us a new connection. We will not be able to compare it with our corporeal connection but rather spiritual, where we are all in bestowal, all in connection, all above our corporeal senses. No one looks at the face of the other, at the physical attributes of another because that is corporeality, which is bestiality. We can see the extent that is limited and wrong, mistaken. Here we need to build a new spiritual relation between us such that certainly this spiritual form will dwell amongst us. Depict to ourselves not that we are looking at the face of one another because the face you know, what was there 20 years ago when you knew each other, and today, and what will be 20 years from now, and after we lose our corporeal forms. We need to relate to one another according to the desire to receive and the point in the heart that is inside the desire to receive that is in each of us, to the essence of each and everyone. because the essence of each and every one is what the Creator gives to us, this attraction towards Him, it is worthwhile to connect with that between us and not to look at anything but that. Not in the external form, not corrupted qualities that we have for the time being, but rather only to one thing: I love in each and every friend the Godly part in him, that is it and the beast it remains, corrects like this, like that. It does not matter how it behaves, but the main thing is that spiritual point in him.

12. S. (32:27) So we need to ask the Creator to remove the concealment?

R. No, not to remove the concealment, God forbid. He also will not remove it. He will simply lower us to corporeality and that is it. Rather we need to ask from Him that specifically through the concealment that we will be able to connect to the friends in a correct manner, to their point in the heart. Not even to the heart of the friend because his heart is his desire to receive, but the point in his heart is called the Godly part from above. That is what I want to connect to.

13. S. (33:21) What is the practical effort a person should do in order to move from concealment to Revelation?

R. I think that the main thing that we need to do is to simply try to connect our points in the heart. Upon all of our hearts connect our points in the hearts and in them make room for the Creator to be revealed and to dwell.

14. S. (34:20) How do I know at what point I am in concealment? How is it felt in the ten?

R. Again it is the point in the heart. I cannot say more than that.

S. Where is the concealment? What is the concealment in the ten, how does it manifest?

R. The concealment in the ten is where I do not see the connection between the friends and the Creator, and this is done on purpose. That is called that the Creator is concealed towards me. If I relate to them like points in the heart, that there is an awakening on behalf of the Creator in them, I relate to them correctly and advance.

15. S. (35:27) So you said “to only look at the spiritual qualities and not the corporeal but how to treat a friend who was impatient and sometimes even hateful openly?

R. That is not important. It is not important how a person relates to even the group and how he talks, or she talks. We need to understand that it is the Creator that is revealing him or showing him to us this way and we need to try to tolerate him or her and to understand that we need to connect with the friend and help him rise above it in all kinds of ways, and that is where our spiritual work comes. We received this from the Creator, and we try to rise to a higher degree above this, to understand that this is to our benefit.

16. S. (36:35) Is the revelation something that happens above reason?

R. Revelation takes place above reason, of course. In faith above reason, in the force of bestowal which we stabilize above the force of reception that is where it takes place according to equivalence of form, the revelation of the Creator and the Creator being.

17. S. (37:05) When the points in the hearts of their friends come together, does that create the embryo that is in adhesion with a Creator?

R. Yes, then we will feel the extent in which in the connection between us something new takes place: the essence between us is called the Ibur, or embryo. Thank you very much, I am truly impressed by the women, with the questions from the women.

But a person who was yet to come to dedicate all of his movements to the Creator alone; where he has not yet adhered to the Creator, heart, and soul, that he has in him that has been disclosed in him. This is called that “that the horse does not equalize in its movements to the rider’s bridle and headstall. Meaning that the horse is not listening to the actions and desires of this rider but rather to the opposite, it happens to him like that, and he crowns the handmaid on the mistress. Meaning that once the person operates according to his desire to receive not according to his desire to bestow, of Divinity, of the Shechina, of the Creator, so do not think that it is so. For that which comes into your mind shall not be at all. Thus said the Lord, surely with a mighty hand for the outcasts shall not be cast out from Him. This means that the Creator controls everything, even behind all of the concealments and all of our behaviors since Him, He also cascades or rolls all these things upon us and the whole wheel turns to come to Kedusha, to its root. Therefore, even though it seems that the horse, meaning the creature, is leading the rider that something depends – that which depends on the horse, on the creature, on his way to the end of correction, his despicable will seemingly. In truth it is not so but rather the rider leads the horse to his destination. However it is not apparent in the present where we are all under the control of one control, the Creator alone. In the future it will be revealed where we always would do everything in adherence to the Creator, in adhesion to Him and we could not do anything outside of His will, and understand it turns out that this way is also contact, is also connection, but it is not revealed and therefore it is called ‘posterior to posterior’, or back-to-back. Meaning not according to the will of the one who dresses or the will of the dresser. Not in the desire of the Creator and not in the desire of the created being because we are also connected to the Creator in all the worst possible states that are distant and opposite that appear, that are imaginable to us, but the difference is that altogether, not by us being or not being connected. Certainly, everyone is in Him and adhered to Him. The difference is that we do not discover it, and therefore to us, it is called back-to-back. We need to also, upon this piece, do questions and answers.

20. S. (46:50) If I understand correctly, my free choice is if I take control of my ego or ask the Creator?

R. You should ask according to the verse that we read and not what you feel like.

21. S. (47:09) In Achor, we are not actually leaving the Creator, so why does the concealment field necessarily bad?

R. That depends on you and how you receive, accept the concealment. If you can bless for the bad like you bless for the good; “and darkness shall shine as light", then moreover you are adhered to the Creator in both night and day. That is how it is written in many excerpts?

22. S. (47:55) What does it mean “not with the will of the one who dresses or the will of the dresser”?

R. That this form of concealment it is not according to the will of the person or the will of the Creator because the Creator wants to work with a person in a revealed way in a complete embrace.

23. S. (48:24) What does it mean that “what comes up in your mind should not be at all”?

R. Meaning it is not like the way you think but it will rather be like revealed in a way that the blessing of the Creator upon the created beings is never stopping, never distances, but it is only relative to the person himself in order to teach him how to be an adhesion in all sorts of states.

24. S. (48:56) If the concealment is personal why does the revelation happen in the group?

R. New concealment is personal and groupwise as well – in this way and that way – and revelation can also be through the group, that is certainly always, but later it is revealed in each and every one in a personal manner. We will see, we are still in the entrance to the Last Generation, which is why I cannot say in a certain way how these changes will take place but certainly for the good and for more revelation.

25. S. (49:46) How can it be a state of back-to-back? Isn't the Creator always facing towards the created being?

R. No, He is not revealed, He is in concealment, now He is in the posterior.

26. S. (53:16) What should we do now in order to feel that we are under the control of the Creator, or should we not demand that but just to continue to work in the concealment?

R. No we do not want concealment the Creator’s desire is to be revealed to the created being and so we need to do all the actions that can take us to connection between us and such a connection that will reveal the Creator that is our whole goal is the revelation of the Creator to the created beings in this world.

27. S. (53:53) We are talking about the past and the present and the future and we know we are not talking about time, so the future’s talking about the state of revelation and the present of.

R. Right. Present and future is what currently is the state and what will be the next state and that is the next moment, it is not really a moment let us say state.

28. S. (54:20) When the horse equalizes the movements of the bridal and the headset of the rider, is that complete equivalence of form?

R. Yes, even in such a way that a person does not feel that the Creator obligates him, rather he precedes the Creator and walks before the Creator there is also some beautiful stories in the Zohar as well, we will learn that later on.

R. We want to reveal him and not to feel better in our vessels of reception but to reveal him meaning that I want to reveal the Creator upon me as it says the Creator's name will be upon you meaning I will become like him I'll take on his form and that is why it is called Adam from the word Dome similar to the Creator that I’ll take on his qualities and by that I will recognize him. That is the only way I can acknowledge, identify with, and recognize the Creator.

31. S. (56:09) What kind of level of connection in the ten do we have to come to in order to discover the general providence and not the personal providence?

R. I do not want to go into general and private providence now because we will get confused with that there are many aspects to this. Rather we need to reach a state where each and every one wants to participate with the group without paying attention to the external faces external appearances how they speak and how they behave because all of that belongs to the corporeal beastly world, we need to pay attention only to what the hearts of our friends is aimed at and try to connect with their hearts and in those hearts see where there is a common space between the hearts and that is where the Creator is revealed.

32. S. (57:19) It is written that one who merits to connect both worlds discover in the present the clothing, that it is all the clothing for the dressing of the divinity. How to feel closer to the Creator in order to discover that the Creator is in every place?

R. This is something we have to do between us to see how between us, we can move to such states that we feel the common reality as present, as the present that exists will continue in the text and he is talking about it there.

33. S. (57:59) It is not clear why if a person did not get to devote all his movements and he thinks that he is distancing, why is it considered that he is in the posterior towards the Creator? He is still trying to attribute everything, all the movements to him.

R. You're right, it is correct you are correct. You probably misunderstood him. It is all about man’s inclination, his tendency. If in every state, he wishes to disclose the face then he is advancing correctly.

34. S. (58:41) In a state of back-to-back if it is not in the will of the dresser of the dresser where's there even connection here?

S. Since the Creator does not want it and it is not according to the desire of the Creator or the desire of the created being then where nevertheless is there connection?

R. The connection is still there, and it is called back-to-back. You cannot come out of your connection with the Creator, you cannot ever. The disconnection is only what we say with regards to what the created being feels but not what is actually happening. It is like a child that came out of his mother's womb and now he exists outside of the womb outside of her body so is he connected or disconnected? Of course he still is connected to her, same thing here even though there is no inner connection the way it was before it is still there. In spirituality it is all unrelated, it is only with respect to the created being it is never with respect to the Creator.

S. When am I the rider and when am I the horse?

R. That is according to your imagination what you imagine only. The Creator is always working on you and that is why this article is called "You Have Made Me and Behind and Before", and the revelation and concealment is what you're imagine that you’re below or above, that you're riding the horse or the horse is riding you it doesn’t matter but just know that you are always the operated the created being only.

S. How do we actually connect between the present and the future?

R. By initially agreeing with all the conditions set by the Creator.

35. S. (01:01:12) What is the state of the revelation of the Creator for us?

R. The revelation of the Creator to us means that in our connection in a way that is suitable for the last generation we're connecting to each other in such a way that the Creator can appear between us, and even though there are some partial personal revelations for each and every individual we are longing for the revelation of the Creator in the created being, that created being is called the connection between the friends that’s what is important to us.

36. S. (01:02:14) The article is amazing, and I have a question. He is first and He is last, the Creator holds our hearts, now we need to combine between the intellect and the feeling. Other than doing the work, how can we advance the ten in the direction of the Creator according to the article?

R. Only to connect between us and make the connection between us in a way that is suitable to the Creator in other words treat the friends as though you are the Creator, you want unlimited bestowal and love that is it.

S. What do I need to give preference to the mind or the feeling in this work of connection and coming closer to the Creator?

R. R. Very good, very well. That is a sign that you have done good work.

S. Exactly, and then we found out we are really doing work because to talk nice and caress each one that could continue for another 10 years. But all of a sudden, this kind of hatred here yesterday, all the friends did not understand what kind of hatred was created between us. And then we started to talk, and we started to talk about love, and we really felt that there was a change taking place here. The question is how can you come to that hatred that you are talking about all the time? Maybe only then you can advance. You said if you sat here for ten years and did not do anything nothing will happen, because there is no work between you. Is this important or should we skip over this? This is my problem.

R. There is no problem.
