Part 2: Selected Excerpts on the Topic: Rosh Hashana, Sin of The Tree of Knowledge

Reader: We’re studying selected excerpts from our sources our sources on the topic of Rosh Hashanah. The first topic is the Sin Of The Tree Of Knowledge. Rabash says:

Reading: (00:11) The Sin of the Tree of Knowledge, RABASH, Article No. 2 (1990), “What Is the Meaning of Failure in the Work?”

They must believe that there is a leader in the world, and that He also watches over with a guidance of the good who does good. When a person does not have such faith, it causes him all the sins that he commits, since it extends from the first iniquity of Adam HaRishon that man has the quality of self-love, and naturally, he is incapable of taking upon himself the burden of faith.

It follows that everything extends from the first failure, when Adam HaRishon fell into self-love. This caused the following generations to have work of simple faith, since when a person is in self-love, the Tzimtzum [restriction] and concealment are on him, and the upper light cannot shine for him. For this reason, a person can believe in the Creator only above reason.

Reader: (01:56) It's written that when a person is in self-love, the restriction and concealment are on him, and the upper light cannot shine on him. What does that mean?

M. Laitman: I'm not sure what you're asking?

Reader: Why can't the upper light shine on him?

M. Laitman: Because the restriction and concealment apply to it.

Reader: Why does that happen, why does he have restriction and concealment?

M. Laitman: Because it has a will to receive.

Reader: The will to receive conceals the upper light?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Reader: Why?

M. Laitman: Because the Creator created the will to receive in order to fill us with His Light.

Student: So why is our will to receive concealing the upper light from us? It's supposed to be a vessel of reception for the upper light?

M. Laitman: But it's not in equivalence of form with the upper light, and therefore He conceals it. The general rule, law, is that everything has to be placed in a vessel which is appropriate for it. And here we see that the vessel for the upper light is inappropriate to the upper light – isn't adapted to it and therefore it conceals it.

Question (Bulgaria): (04:26) It’s written, simple faith, what is simple faith? It’s written, to believe simply, simple faith.

M. Laitman: Simple faith is actually the most difficult thing to explain. It's when a person, when what he sees is what he understands. Meaning, he doesn't need to add to what he discovered, he doesn't need to add different actions, qualities. Rather, what he saw, what he understands with his own instruments—that he accepts as the current given state, and that is called simple faith.

Question (USA – San Francisco): (06:02) When we try to raise the greatness of the Creator in the Ten, we're trying to raise the quality of bestowal, right, the love of friends. Can you help define the Creator? Like, on one hand, it's like this simple law, just this force, just kind of one-way force. On the other hand, it's this really complicated, it's beyond our imagination. It's this wise, loving, you know, something that we're supposed to have a conversation with all day. How do you reconcile them?

M. Laitman: In our day and age, in our situation, of course, it's not simple to reveal the Creator. And it's not simple because He, Himself, exists within a very simple law, not complicated, not complicated. But we, when we want to reveal Him, we approach Him with our vessels and our vessels are very complex. They have black and white, it's good and bad, all sorts of colors, movements, shapes. And everything is mixed together between everyone and so it's very difficult for us to discover who we are, what we are, what desires do we have in us, how can we use them. It's a problem, and so, what the Kabbalists did is that they prepared for us various exercises, like in school, for example. We come to the classroom and the teacher, she teaches us how to comprehend a story, a work of art, a painting. And when we look at it and we hear her explanations, gradually, we become accustomed to open up the story or the painting. And so, we learn to understand reality.

And it's the same thing here in the wisdom of Kabbalah, except here the subject matter is a bit more complex, why? Because I see before me a whole big wide world, and what can I do, right? So, I'm told, you need to attempt to see in this world only one single force, which is the Creator. And after that, you need to make an effort to attribute to that force, one good action, namely, that He wants to fill you up with goodness, everything that's good, all right. And if we become used to that, if we begin to become used to that, it may be that we will succeed. And we won't succeed in discovering our success, rather, we will discover the One who holds creation in His hands, right? And so, for that to happen, we need to connect together and to build ourselves up as a small group. And within that group, to bring ourselves to different shapes, formations – which are similar to that reality. And so, we can, by assembling our vessels each time in a different formation, different shape, we can make ourselves match our reality. And so, to understand what it's like, what it's akin to. Well, I guess I didn't get to put it clearly this time, but we will discover it. In short, our work is to build from the connection between us, such a connection which truly brings us to the understanding of creation.

I'm being told I need to conclude the lesson, so when do we meet again?

Reader: (13:02) You're asking about the schedule today?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Reader: At noon, we have a lesson at a regular time at noon, according to what I understand.

Question (INFO): (13:29) First of all, Rav, are you still here? Can I ask you something?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes, I'm with you.

Student: First of all, we wanted to ask, how in this current state of all the events we went through, do we still, with all our forces, keep breaking through into spirituality?

M. Laitman: Of course, I think we're very much used to being under rocket attacks and bombs.

Student: How to use all these events and the pressure and tension and the threat, to use it? That it came for our benefit to break through into spirituality?

M. Laitman: I don't know, for me, it's over years, over the years I've been in Israel. Everything feels calm, it's all as per usual. So, of course, we will continue with our regular schedule, our planned schedule, and we will see. Maybe even because it's a holiday, that, and because all of the bombings and so on, not all workplaces are open for business. Maybe we can do even more, more study, more exercises.

Student: Yes, I'm going to update our schedule because, right now, all the limitations were taken off and we're going back to what we planned earlier. I'll update that in a second. Today's lesson was very strong and special, we got a lot of comments from friends. It's like you reorganized all the terms of reward, revelation, concealment, about all the connections to the system of providence of the Creator. The question is: is the depth that we feel in the lesson connected to the state around us?

M. Laitman: Of course, of course, it can't be unrelated, of course it's related. And we will make use of it; we will make use of it.

Student: How do you feel or what are your discernments about the state that's happening? How do you interpret it, depict it, learn from it?

M. Laitman: I'll tell you this, this much: When I arrived in Israel, I started working in the Air Force. I was in airplane maintenance, and so there I received that kind of style of thinking and so on. So, I don't know what to say, exactly, but I'm happy; I'm happy that we have such relations with the neighbors. This is more well-defined and clear than a state, where everything appears fine-and-dandy but, meanwhile, they're preparing some bomb underneath you or something. To me, it appears that everything is fine, that we have nothing to worry about, and I very much hope that we – the men, the women, the families, the children. That we will maintain proper seriousness and return here to our studio, return here several times a day. That you all need to schedule and I'm here for anything, I'm ready for anything. It's interesting, yesterday we were under grave threat and today, all of a sudden, we're told that nothing more will happen. How can it be? Do you have an answer?

Student: Right now, there aren't any threats, till any new comments, but again, we want to ask, how do you see this spiritually. That one second there's a threat, everybody's in the bomb shelters, under missiles, and now suddenly everything's calm. Well, until we get a different announcement but how to look at it, how to relate to it?

M. Laitman: I don't know how to look at it, I don't know but if our managers, if all the higher-ups in the army. And if they say everything is good and calm, and you can go dance in the streets, I don't know, I accept it.

Student: What does the Creator want of the nation of Israel?

M. Laitman: The Creator wants the people of Israel to finish the correction, very simply. To conclude the correction as the Creator started creation. Yes, he wants us to finish it.

Student: What does the Creator want from B’nei Baruch?

M. Laitman: For us to be an example, an example, studying in all our free time, and other than work. Other than having to think about all the elderly and the children and the sick and so on, we need to invest ourselves in all areas of life, that's it. And thank you very much to everyone for being with us in the lesson.

Question (INFO): (21:38) Announcements/Updates

Reader: (23:18) Thank you and we’ll end with a song!
