Reading Letter 37: (00:31)

October 25, 1957

... as for separating love of friends from the work of the Creator, I do not understand it at all because it was never the custom with Baal HaSulam to connect those two together.

On the contrary, it was always forbidden to speak words of Torah or of states of greatness and smallness among the friends. Our way has always been, “Walk humbly.” It was barely permitted to speak of matters of work among the friends, as said in several of Baal HaSulam’s essays in that regard.

Rather, the devotion of the friends was that of ordinary people, where each one cares only about his friend’s corporeality, not about his spirituality. Drawing closer among the friends was actually through meals and drinking of wine, not through words of Torah.

Therefore, I am not sure what innovations you are trying to make. Perhaps until now you believed that for love of friends there shouldn’t be discussions or engagements in matters of work, and now you know for sure that this is the only way it should be, meaning by walking humbly.

The way is as one who goes to his friend’s occasion. He doesn’t think of himself—whether or not he is in a good mood—but must take part in his friend’s joy. He must not frown, but show a happy face. It is the same here: bonding among the friends should be such that each wishes to delight his friend, and precisely with corporeal things, since precisely here is the matter of “Buy yourself a friend.”

“Make for yourself a rav” is a different story. That is, sometimes among the friends, one wishes to execute, “Make for yourself a rav” toward another. However, this is specifically among friends who have great care and strict rigor, and not everyone is suitable for it. But this is no longer considered “love of friends,” meaning what love of friends requires, since there is no connection to the work, as you wrote to me.

Baruch Shalom HaLevi

Son of Baal HaSulam

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (04:46) How relevant is this letter to us?

M. Laitman: What can I tell you? We have yet to have a society like here. When I was whipped by Rabash, that's why I can't compare between what is and what isn't, this group or another audience, but it was barely spoken of. We read and talk, discuss all kinds of things and ask and answer. What can you do? It's the time that's more pressing on us, and we want to understand better and know how we advance and are we advancing and in what. That's why I don't put some kind of boundaries on this. But in truth, in the matters of spiritual work, it was usually not spoken of. It wasn't spoken of because it's a thing that a person should keep to himself, within himself and all that has to do with speech is already not associated with inner work. One should not disclose what one has in his heart, the innards of one's heart is prohibited of revealing. Rather, it should be inside, and the friends that are also on that same wave, they feel you and perceive what's in your heart.

Student: What exactly should we not disclose because we are speaking here very openly about love, connection, everything is very open, the language is very loose, so where's the boundary? This is yours and this is the opposite, it should increase and raise and amplify.

M. Laitman: No. We need to protect such actions that the heart opens and what's in it is revealed. It's not good, this needs to be inside a person truly, whereas all the rest of things...

Student: When he writes here that the friend's devotion was very simply that each one cares about the friend's corporeality and not his spirituality, what does it mean? What is a society that cares mostly about corporeality and not spirituality?

M. Laitman: Our entire corporeal framework we can talk about. Everything we learn about in the introductions to TES and TES, also meaning all that doesn't come through our hearts in a direct way that stands out.

Student: Why specifically keep the heart to myself?

M. Laitman: It's from the prohibition that one should not disclose the inner feelings inside the heart. Meaning what's inside the heart, keep it and don't sell it.

Student: Can we speak about our common heart in the ten?

M. Laitman: No, but again we're living in a very different period of time, a little bit and completely. That's why it is better to work and not talk. On the other hand, where everyone is silent and don't talk about it, there's also those that then think that it's an issue, it doesn't show itself advancing. That's why you can see how many articles Rabash wrote and how we're learning them and how we want to advertise them. We will advance and try to understand more.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (11:37) I want to continue the friend. It's clear that you say talk about what's written in the article, talk about your common work, but oftentimes for example, there's a gathering of friends, we expect a friend to open his heart, you can tell him to move the friend.

M. Laitman: Well I don't know, there are those who know how to excite others and impress others just from they went to the market and they traveled on the bus and they saw a movie or whatnot. About anything you can impress and evoke an emotion, but in truth, about the important things, it’s best to talk less.

Student: Can I continue? For example, we do preparations for the lesson, and sometimes they tell us open the heart and speak about and so on and so forth. It's part of our language to try to move one another and be in this way. It's possible that we're damaging each other?

M. Laitman: No, no, no, harming no. You're not breaching the boundaries here. The borders are not yet so they don't stand out enough.

Student: I'll ask differently, what is a purposeful conversation between friends?

M. Laitman: A purposeful conversation is to study together what's written, unlimited, and to try and talk to, one towards the heart of the friends.

Student: When the source is between us and we discuss it, around it there we can enter freely and speak each one how he grasps it.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Also, when we speak about any sort of common work that we share, we can talk about it and discuss it? Common work, for example we talk about a project in dissemination.

M. Laitman: That is clear that it is allowed.

Student: Last thing, you wrote in the letter that there are special times where you can come and show your emotions towards the friends. It's during the meal while drinking wine, so what is this meal where a person can open up his feelings towards friends?

M. Laitman: It's kind of like it's a state that's not so serious, although he's very serious within but externally not so serious. There's laughter, there's all kinds of forms of behavior that are lighter.

Student: Clear, but when we're in a meal, can we be more loose towards one another? Can we be more open, can you your feelings or you need also to…?

M. Laitman: Less, less limitations.

Student: Why this protection? Why is being meticulous about expressing feelings, expressing the heart, why is there…?

M. Laitman: There's a grip to the externals in this, and that's why a person needs to be cautious about it and to be introverted in the matter.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (16:11) We just heard many examples of what we can discuss. Because we have many friends who are not with us for a long time we see there's a lot of confusion there. Can you also give us a few examples of what not to discuss, what we shouldn't discuss, what is forbidden to discuss?

M. Laitman: How I relate to the friends, everything is permitted. How I relate to the Creator, almost everything is prohibited.

Student: So, the prayer, how I pray to the Creator, what is my attitude toward Him, how I depict Him?

M. Laitman: Yes, those are usually things a person doesn't speak about.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (17:17) You said it’s recommended to work without speaking. How do you work without speaking?

M. Laitman: Not without speaking, but your attitude, not speaking about your attitude toward spirituality, that's what I meant.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (17:40) He writes here, someone who is going to his friend's occasion does not make a calculation, does not think of himself, whether he has a good mood or not, he does what the friend needs. There should be in every state, in every form of connection between the friends, a person should bring himself to check what does the friend need.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: Also in a meal, in a gathering of friends, in the lesson, or about speaking, talking. The previous generation, I barely spoke with my parents about anything significant but they set an example. There was a feeling that they work for you, but not with philosophical conversations about life. If I look at my grandkids, you speak to the child, every kid is becoming a lawyer, and they can philosophize about everything. Is this a change in the generations, or something is corrupted now?

M. Laitman: Both this and that, both.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (19:05) What is the friend's corporeality?

M. Laitman: His friend's corporeality is what has to do with one's corporeal reality.

Student: All of his desires are in order to receive.

M. Laitman: No, just like that, in order to receive is not corporeality, but all the desires in which he is concerned with his corporeality, that's corporeality.

Student: You say that the friend's corporeality is your spirituality, so do you have to focus on something specific?

M. Laitman: That's in order to be concerned with one's friend's corporeality, and beyond that you can care for yourself.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (20:08) Say the friend is lacking sustenance or health. How much should I care about that, worry about the health actually?

M. Laitman: As much as you can, as much as is customary. Not all the societies and all the times are the same, rather each needs to understand how he can be in collaboration with his friends in one group and how from that he comes closer to the Creator.

Student: What does it mean, as is customary? If the friend has a health problem, I can think about him or I can drive him to the doctor, or you know, where's the line?

M. Laitman: There is no line, as much as a person can.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (21:23) You said to the friend that it's allowed to speak about how I relate to the friends but not how I relate to the Creator, so how do I give one the greatness of the Creator?

M. Laitman: As much as a person can grasp my attitude towards him, and be impressed by my attitude to the Creator, that's how it should be.

Student: So it's allowed to speak of His greatness?

M. Laitman: The greatness of who?

Student: The Creator.

M. Laitman: No, the greatness of the Creator we usually don't speak of. By this we do not obligate anyone.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (22:34) You told the friend to try and speak from one friend to his friend's heart and before that you said don't speak from your own heart, so how can I speak to the heart of the friend if it's not from my heart?

M. Laitman: Also, I don't think I said it exactly like that, that not to talk from the heart. Rather it is better for a person to hide the consciousness of his heart, the inner rooms that are inside the heart, where one loves, hates, makes calculations towards the most important things. He does not touch that in speech with others, even with his closest friends.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (23:53) It says, and also here, the connection of the friends should be such that each one wishes to delight his friends and precisely with corporeal things, since precisely here is the matter of buy yourself a friend. In other words, our framework, our daily work, protects us when we come into contact in workshops and lessons. Every form of contact between the friends, these are the corporeal things that surround us that we need to grow and delight each other in?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: He also said that the importance is the most important thing. Is that the intention, to look after the importance and delighting the friends?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (24:58) In the morning, you told the friend when he asked about the kingdom of priests that he needs to serve everyone, but you said don't rush to do it, because you're going to be incorporated with foreign desires,  who knows what they are, you have to scrutinize it first. In my desire to fill the corporeal desires of my friends, there are things I should scrutinize? What yes, what no, or I have no ability to sort them in any way?

M. Laitman: To sort we need, to the extent in which a person understands what's more important and what's less, that's one thing, and the other thing is that we need to first of all nevertheless, connect to the purpose of creation, the essence of creation, to all those states, matters, that are internal in us, and only then approach the solutions.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (26:34) At the end of the article, he talks about make for yourself a Rav. Make for yourself a Rav is another matter, that is  sometimes among the friends one wishes to execute make for yourself a Rav toward another. However, this is specifically among friends who have great care and strict rigor, and not everyone is suitable for it. What is this state, who is qualified for it?

M. Laitman: Where it's permitted to begin to relate to a friend, or to several friends like to great teachers, to people who lead the public. This is permitted but we also need to examine well that this relation, this attitude to be protected in accordance with what we call qualified people, kosher people.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (28:13) This article confused me completely. If we would build ourselves as a society, in the past we would look completely different today, that's how it seems to me. But a few things here, to separate love of friends from love of the Creator, you shouldn't discuss words of Torah, you should speak more humbly, you should worry about the friend's corporeality and not her spirituality, not to speak of the greatness of the Creator. I live on those things.

M. Laitman: So, you see the extent in which you suddenly receive something, it's opposite what you received. Well?

Student: What do we do now?

M. Laitman: Nothing.

Student: I'm here for over a decade, and this article simply you know, upends everything.

M. Laitman: It just seems to you that way. I would say that we need to continue, hear the articles, read, sing, connect, and reach the secrets and the meals and everything that we need to do. We just talk in a disclosed manner; we need to do less. Let it be protected in the heart, that's what we need to do.

Student: I feel completely blocked; I don't have the way to ask you how to deal with it.

M. Laitman: Very nice. I don't know you so well, I haven't heard you in previous days, yes? But all in all, we need to talk less about the spiritual work, that which a person keeps within himself if he has such a thing. And if it's disclosed, then it's disclosed through the society, through the stories, through explanations about how we behave within the society, not one towards the other, or one towards the Creator.

Student: On the greatness of the Creator, that's something that gives us powerful work. It lifts us from the waste, it lets us advance.

M. Laitman: I understand, and?

Student: Should we not talk about it?

M. Laitman: It's childish. Valuable things are things that a person keeps within himself, doesn't speak about them, so it's worthwhile for us, too.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (31:58) Sometimes it comes out that I talk in a workshop and there's discussion about the connection between us and I share from the heart. And then a moment after I spoke, I feel like there's this block, this emotional block, and it's hard for me to return to that same impression I was in. Is that what it means that it came out to the external ones?

M. Laitman: No, no, no. I don't think that you have, almost everyone actually has no ability to speak about what's in the heart, and it's forbidden to speak about it with your mouth.

Student: And when we do dissemination, we want to share with the audience how to be careful there?

M. Laitman: Also, not a problem, but soon ahead of Rosh Hashanah, the new year, we'll begin to talk about it and work on it. It's infinite.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (33:09) When I pray for the friend, do I need now to pray only for the state she received about the corporeality, or do I need to pray for the spirituality, for she to see that...

M. Laitman: You can pray for whatever you want, what do you want from me?

Student: No, because the article is now saying that we have to pray more for the corporeality of a friend.

M. Laitman: No, that's how he writes.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (33:39) We have groups that we support in all kinds of states that happen in the community, all kinds of sick people. They're in order to help those people to rise up from their corporeal, not simple state that they're in. So we can bring excerpts on the greatness of the Creator, which is okay also, excerpts that we didn't write. What else can we do in these cases? And we pray together and hold on.

M. Laitman: Just to pray quietly.

Student: How does that person who goes through this state, if God forbid it's like a sickness or something like that, how do we uplift her and give her the strength to adhere to the society, in what way?

M. Laitman: You can talk about the power, the obligation to adhere to the society.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (34:54) How does the person who is silent, how does it build the person?

M. Laitman: Again?

Student: How does silence protect and build the person?

M. Laitman: How does silence?

Student: How does it protect and build the person when we're silent?

M. Laitman: Silence, it’s because we are not doing, creating the states and healing the states, but it's the upper force, so it's important for us to make room for Him. I would say like that.

Student: Does silence help us carry out annulments to go above reason, does it help us?

M. Laitman: No.

Student: No?

M. Laitman: You shouldn't also speak about it too much, you're not in it yet.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (34:54) I wanted to ask, this action where we in the Ten connect, in order to support. So, when we connect in the Ten in order to support the friend's corporeality, what does it build in us?

M. Laitman: Again?

Student: There's the action where we together support the corporeality of a friend, and it builds something spiritual in us, what is that?

M. Laitman: Yes, when you are ready to annul the individual ego of each one, in order to be connected to some extent for the sake of the friend, of the other friend.

Student: I will ask, when a Ten cares for the corporeality of a Ten, for the framework, for attendance, for materials, you can basically say that that's the corporeality of the Ten, and then the Creator cares for the spirituality?

M. Laitman: It should be like this, yes.

Question (Women Petah Tikva Center): (38:04) Many times in the lessons we learn about internal work, mostly when we study the Rabash articles, and then we have two workshops a day, and we talk a lot, for like 20 minutes we talk about the topic. Many times we scrutinize topics like annulment, faith above reason, how to attribute it to the Creator, how we reveal the Creator between us. Is it not worthwhile to talk about these topics, or talk about them in a certain kind of distance, like about what's written, but without what we're feeling?

M. Laitman: No, this doesn't matter.

Student: However, we feel is okay?

M. Laitman: Yes, yes.

Question (Women Kyiv 7): (39:04) Love above reason is a force? Why don't we all get it?

M. Laitman: We have to yearn for and detect that we're not receiving it.

Student: Are there stages in receiving love?

M. Laitman: No, there aren't.

Question (Women MAK 25): (39:34) Can you tell me please, when we connect in the Ten, where is the border between what you can open the heart, and what will always be in humbleness?

M. Laitman: We have to keep those personal feelings and keep it humbly.

Question (Women Spain 1): (40:15) Is my corporeal responsibility before one friend or another, is it in the Ten or all together?

M. Laitman: It's half a sentence.

Student: The question again, is my responsibility towards a specific friend in the Ten, or towards the whole Ten?

M. Laitman: You're missing a word before the word Ten.

Reader: She's asking whether it's for one friend that she has to care for or for all the friends in general.

M. Laitman: Both, according to what's going on there.

Question (Women MAK): (41:27) Do we say that buy yourself a friend is an external connection, it's the equality between friends, and make yourself a rav is an inner connection, where the Creator, the rav, and the friends are a degree above me? What does it mean to build that inner picture of me, the group, and the Creator inside of me?

M. Laitman: Well, that's how it should be, to build such a ladder.

Question (Kyiv): (42:08) If the friends don't share inner feelings of theirs, but like it's written in the article mostly do work, then how do you build connection of a common Kli?

M. Laitman: They're starting to feel one another gradually.

Student: What do they start to feel?

M. Laitman: His spiritual work.

Question (Women Turkiye 7): (42:52) It's written in the letter that our path was always one of being humble and it was barely allowed to talk the words of work between people, between the friends. The question is, what is it to talk about the work, and what's the boundary of what you can’t talk about?

M. Laitman: We still can’t feel that boundary. For us, we're like little children, like babies. It doesn't matter if there's a sign to not cross, they just cross and that's it. They don't care about anything. We are the same in our work, so we'll talk about it in six months and it will be clearer.

Student: When I feel something about the work and when I try to put this in wording, I cannot do this anyway because what I feel is so strong that I feel difficulty to put what I feel in words. So, how can I tell my friends, have them feel what I feel without using any words?

M. Laitman: With an embrace, with a kiss. What can I say, how can we share feelings between one another? The connection between us is especially revealed through feelings. I can feel you, I have no problem, even when we don't speak the same language but friends might not.

Question (Women Moscow 6): (45:19) How to connect all of this when there's a difference between the work and love of friends? There's the inner work, and there's the work before the friends, externally. That's also love of friends.

M. Laitman: You should try not to be confused, and to solve this problem. And you'll see how, from above, the Creator solves this problem simply.

Student: It's written in the article, “Make Yourself a Rav.” And this is where, between the friends, there's the matter that one wants to observe, make yourself a Rav. How do you do that in the Ten?

M. Laitman: I don't know. I'm afraid to tell you about this because you'll begin to inflate it. You simply have to speak about the friend, how great he is, how he stands out among the friends, and in this way, make him a Rav. That's it.

Question (Turkiye 2): (47:02) How can a person limit and restrict his heart towards a friend? How to limit one's heart towards a friend?

M. Laitman: To restrict?

Student: Meaning, not open up the heart towards a friend.

M. Laitman: Not to open the heart toward the friends, to such an extent that he's worried if this will happen or not. I would think about how to open the heart relative to the friends. How not to open, that's not good. It's an incorrect attitude.

Student: In the congress, during the meals, we open up our hearts towards the friends. How do we do it?

M. Laitman: For the time being, it's not too bad. The extent to which you can open your heart is not going to harm anyone.

Question (Chelyabinsk-Omsk): (48:42) I am focused on gratitude to the Creator. I have no problem with gratitude. I'm thankful for everything to the Creator. But prayer? You know, I think, how can I ask the Creator to do good to His sons? Maybe I need to ask for the intention where I seemingly ask for His sons, and by that, I delight Him?

M. Laitman: Yes, specifically in this way.

Question (MAK 25): (49:38) Can one share the feelings without words? Meaning to ask the Creator to bring these experiences you felt in the convention and pass it to everyone?

M. Laitman: Ask, you can ask about that.

Question (Asia): (49:59) So far, we talked about the limitations on opening the heart and what's in the heart turns toward the Ten. Many times, there are conversations with the wife about the path, about feelings, about the friends and the Creator. Is that okay?

M. Laitman: I wouldn't recommend it. We speak about such things very little, with men friends, with women friends not at all, and with the wife not at all. You should not speak about these things.

Question (Hadera 1): (50:44) Sometimes in the work we come to this inner emotional flood of feelings that you cannot hold back. Is that something you're not allowed to talk about specifically?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: And here you feel like you're exploding inside, and that needs to be kept inside.

M. Laitman: Yes. But you can sing together.

Question (Women MAK 22): (51:31) How to keep the humbleness in the Ten? What to talk about and what not?

M. Laitman: You can talk about, walk humbly. You can speak about, walk humbly without any limitations.

Question (Women MAK 19): (51:56) If we don't disclose all the love in the walls, the inner walls of the heart towards the friends in the group, then as much as I love them, this is actually what softens their hearts. When I disclose to them how much I love them. So, not to talk about that in the group. So how do you express all the love I have towards them? What's in my heart?

M. Laitman: It's allowed, talk about everything.

Student: Can I ask another question? Is the joy from our connection together with you, where we're in the lessons, that joy, can it be as a force of connection between us?

 M. Laitman: Of course, that's how it is.

Student: How can we work in that joy, like that, in that way?

M. Laitman: Don't ask questions.

Question (Women Kavkaz 1): (53:25) Let's say I see the state of a friend, what scrutiny he's in, can I hint to him that I see it?

M. Laitman: Best if you keep quiet.

Student: The scrutiny of how to express my feelings, where is that?

M. Laitman: It's not for now.

Question (Women Ukraine2): (53:53) We all feel now that we're in some new stage in Bnei Baruch. Work that is aimed more towards the Israeli Kli. Can you tell us, please, what is the work that you expect from the world Kli, especially from women?

M. Laitman: I expect that you work on coming closer between you throughout the entire world Kli.

Student: Can I refine the question? At 5 p.m. we have a prayer. It's not broadcasted, but our Ten participates in it. We read the 18th prayer. We don't exactly know what to read, but we decided to. So, is that correct? Maybe you should aim us to what needs to happen.

M. Laitman: I don't know. I would advise you to read. Pirkei Avot. Read from Pirkei Avot. There's plenty to read.

Student: Later on. Maybe somehow organize what we need to read.

M. Laitman: Not every day. It's too much.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (56:02) Rav, about what was said today. Many things are being heard from the news, different people. In the end, it works out. About the connection between a man and a woman, a man, and his wife that are on the path. At a certain time, we said that we can talk about your wife, about everything. Of course, not about the most internal things in a person, connection with the Creator, but that you can talk to the wife about everything. Is there a difference today? Has something changed?

M. Laitman: No. There are no limitations.

M. Laitman: Okay. We concluded with this. Well, who else wants to say something? Here, it's… no, no, no, no. I don't understand why there are still so many questions that arise from the screen. What's being asked here, it's already... don't put your hand up. We're done. Let's make an agreement. You're not putting your hand up. No, no, no. Do you see what state I'm in? Do you see what state I'm in? No, no.

Reader: Rav, so maybe we'll leave something for next week? For questions? Maybe we'll leave something for next week, the questions, Rav?

M. Laitman: It'll be for next year as well.  So, we can conclude the lesson, yes?

Reader: (58:20) Announcements.

Song: (58:46)
