Are Painkillers Turning Us into Drug Addicts?

There's a new epidemic of addiction to painkillers, which are basically opium-based drugs, and people are reaching states where they admit to being like drug addicts. In Israel, a plea was made to the Supreme Court for more transparency of information, which states that these drugs carry harmful effects to their health. People seemingly still deny that taking these drugs will affect them, as they not only gain the benefits of not having to suffer, but also the pleasure it gives them, which cancels out possible consequences at a later stage. As it is written: “The angel of death brings a drop of poison on the tip of a sword and a person opens his mouth and swallows that drop and dies.” In the meantime, to the person, this drop is sweet. This is a self-destructive mechanism embedded in a person. We see that the entire world is engaged in self-destruction. In Kabbalah, if we wish to rise above pain and suffering, we need to undergo what Kabbalah terms “the recognition of evil.” This means that we will know what is good and what is bad in our lives. The good is that we will know that in our connection with others and the Creator, we attain a perfect and eternal life, and will no longer feel pain or suffering. Instead, we will feel fulfillment, because all suffering comes as a result of disconnection from the source of goodness.
