I heard in 1945, Jerusalem
We must know that it is a rule that one cannot live without vitality and pleasure, since it stems from the root of creation, which is His desire to do good to His creations. Hence, every creature cannot exist without vitality and pleasure. Therefore, every creature must go and look for a place from which to receive delight and pleasure.
But the pleasure is received in three times: in the past, in the present, and in the future. However, the main reception of pleasure is in the present. Although we see that one receives pleasure from the past and from the future, too, it is because the past and the future shine in the present.
Therefore, if one does not find a sensation of pleasure in the present, he receives vitality from the past, and he can tell others how he was happy in past times. One can receive vitality from this in the present, or picture to himself that he hopes that in the future he will be happy. But measuring the sensation of the pleasure from the past and the future depends on the extent to which they shine for him in the present. We must know that this applies both to corporeal pleasures and to spiritual pleasures.
As we see, when a person works, even in corporeality, the order is that during the work he is unhappy because he is exerting himself. And one can continue the work only because the future shines for him, that he will receive a payment for his work. This shines for him in the present, and this is why he can continue the work.
However, if he is unable to picture the reward he will receive in the future, he must take pleasure from the future, not from the reward he will receive for his work in the future. In other words, he will not enjoy the reward, but he will not feel suffering from the exertion. This is what he enjoys now, in the present, what he will have in the future.
The future shines for him in the present, in that soon the work will be over, meaning the time that he must work, and he will receive rest.
M. Laitman: I think here these are things that are clear. There are things that we feel even in our life, each of us. Next.
Reading: (04:41) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha
Thus, the pleasure of rest that one will ultimately receive still shines for him. In other words, his profit will be that he will not be afflicted by what he now feels from the work, and this gives him the strength to be able to work now.
If one is unable to picture to himself that soon he will be rid of the torments that he suffers now, he will come to despair and sadness to the point that that state can bring one to take his own life.
This is why our sages said, “One who takes one’s life has no part in the next world,” since he denies Providence, that the Creator leads the world in a form of good and doing good. Instead, one should believe that these states come to him because from above they want it to bring him correction, meaning that he will collect Reshimot [recollections] from these states so he will be able to understand the conduct of the world more intensely and more strongly.
These states are called Achoraim [posterior]. When one overcomes these states, he will be awarded the quality of Panim [anterior], meaning that the light will shine into these Achoraim.
M. Laitman: I'm not sure what there is to add here. I also don't see too many questions. We will see later.
Reading: (06:58) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha
There is a rule that one cannot live if one has no place from which to receive delight and pleasure. Thus, when one is unable to receive from the present, he must still receive vitality from the past or from the future. In other words, the body seeks for itself vitality in every means at its disposal.
Then, if one does not agree to receive vitality from corporeal things, the body has no choice but to agree to receive vitality from spiritual things because it has no other choice. Hence, it must agree to receive delight and pleasure from vessels of bestowal, since it is impossible to live without vitality. It follows that when one is accustomed to observe Torah and Mitzvot [commandments] Lo Lishma [not for Her sake], meaning to receive reward for his work, he can picture to himself that he will receive some reward later on, and he can already work on the calculation that he will receive delight and pleasure later.
However, if one works not in order to receive reward, but wants to work without any reward, how can he picture to himself having anything from which to receive sustenance? After all, he cannot create any picture because he has nothing on which to do it.
Hence, in Lo Lishma, there is no necessity to give one vitality from above, since he has vitality from the depiction of the future, and only necessity is given from above, not luxury.
Reading: (09:40) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha
Therefore, if one wants to work only for the Creator and has no wish whatsoever to take vitality for other things, there is no other way, but to be given vitality from above, since he demands only the necessary vitality to go on living. Then he receives vitality from the structure of the Shechina [Divinity].
M. Laitman: Yes, meaning he doesn't want anything for himself, but only to exist in order to do actions, in order to bestow. This can be felt very well in the connection among the friends. If someone is truly able to think of the well-being of the friends, then accordingly, he'll feel that by that things in him, vessels, are beginning to stabilize in him to receive the force of bestowal.
Reader: (11:06) Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 35. Concerning the Vitality of Kedusha
It is as our sages said, “Anyone who is sorry for the public is rewarded with seeing the comfort of the public.” The public is called “The Shechina,” since “public” means a collective, meaning the assembly of Israel, for Malchut is the collection of all the souls.
Since the person does not want any reward for himself, but wants to work for the sake of the Creator, which is called “raising the Shechina from the dust,” so she will not be so degraded, meaning that they do not want to work for the sake of the Creator, but all that one sees that will produce benefit for himself, then there is fuel for the work. And what concerns the benefit of the Creator, and one does not see what reward he will receive in return, the body objects to this work because it feels a taste of dust in this work.
And such a person does want to work for the sake of the Creator, but the body resists it. And he asks the Creator to give him strength to nonetheless be able to work to raise the Shechina from the dust. Hence, he is awarded the Panim [face] of the Creator, Who appears to him, and the concealment departs from him.
M. Laitman: OK, this is the entire article. I wanted us to hear it together, because later, if you read it or not, I don't know, but even if you do, then each one reads it himself or in a small group, it has lesser benefit of reading it together.
Question (USA Northeast): (13:34) In the reading, it says, anyone who is saddened for the public is rewarded and sees the comfort of the public. What is the comfort of the public? What is that reward of seeing the comfort of the public?
M. Laitman: It's how the Creator dwells in the public. How can it be that the Creator dwells in the public? He, just a moment ago, saw that He’s in sorrow in the public, meaning the public isn't in a good state. So now, how can he see that the Creator dwells in the public? So what's going on here? What change took place? But he corrected his vessels, and he now sees that the Creator dwells in the public. How did he reach that? By being sorry for the public being immersed in evil, in the will to receive in order to receive, that it can't find the good and correct attitude towards the Creator. And he does arrive to that, and he's sorry that the public does not want to do it. And by that, he seemingly, he covers for the public, and therefore, he's rewarded with, that the Creator is in the public, “in my people I dwell,” and that's how he discovers it.
Question (Zafon 2): (15:28) How to let go of the past, about all those emotional assets inside us?
M. Laitman: I don't need to give up on anything. I don't need to erase anything. We're not in this life, in corporeal life, that we need to behave like what regular people do. I simply relate everything to the Creator. That's why I have no problem, not with the past, nor the present, nor the future. If I relate everything to, There is None Else Besides Him, then there is no problem here. I'm willing to complete it with everyone, and in everything.
Question (USA Midwest): (16:26) What's the best way to prepare in advance, to go through the states of Achoraim?
M. Laitman: No, we can't, and we mustn't do it. A person mustn't be immersed in the vessel of reception, it is the exact opposite. We don't have such things in the path. We always need to be drawn to adhere to the Creator through the group, and if we prepare our vessels, our connections so the Creator will be able to be revealed. That's the only way. Nothing else. What he's saying is the opposite of sanctity. God forbid. No, not in that direction.
Question (Karmiel): (17:37) What should we do in order to incorporate in the sorrow of the collective?
M. Laitman: This happens itself, gradually, because we're in the last generation, and our fate and the fate of the public are intertwined and interconnected, and they're advancing towards the same goal, which is close. That is why let us only think that our future and the future of the public is the same, and to that extent, we need to disseminate and spread this method of education and spread the future of the world. Look at the world, how it's deteriorating, how it's beginning to understand where it actually is, how it's beginning to agree that it has no good future in anything, and each person is seemingly lowering his head, not thinking that there'll be anything good. That goodness is what he had, not what he'll have. The next generation will be a lot less privileged, will have it a lot worse off than this generation. In the end of the 19th century, in the beginning of the 20th century, which has already passed, we were at some kind of peak in the corporeal level, and now, from now onwards, we're deteriorating. There's nothing good for the future, and that's what we see, we see despair, drug use, all kinds of things that are being revealed in humanity. And we ourselves are looking at our children and thinking that it's a shame that they were born and they're growing up. What world are we leaving them? That's why all of our work is to tell everyone as quickly as possible why it's being revealed that way. Why do we need to move closer to understanding, to recognizing these forces that govern us? Everything comes eventually in order to advance us. If we understand that it's all for the better, and from all of these things we need to extract strength and moral and so on, then we'll very quickly arrive towards the good goal. That's why along that path we can fall to all kinds of states and wars and very problematic situations. We see that we're not just being threatened by different crises of climate, of hunger, things like that. So we need, as soon as possible, to learn what is ahead of us, and Kabbalists write about this. They wrote about this a while ago, that it isn’t worth our while to skip over it.
Question (Nikolaev-Sochi): (21:28) About the article, it turns out that the reward could shine from the future, on a certain image or something, or society would accept us, and the suffering will end, and then I won't have that type of work. But it's not real work towards the Creator, if you get like, something shines from the future. So eventually I'm going to have to reach a state that I'm working for the Creator, and nothing shines.
M. Laitman: I'd say it's the opposite, that also all the past, the present, the future, they join in this calculation, in this wholeness, in this absolute goodness, and not the way it seems to me. There is no moment in life that just goes by for no reason, everything is taken care of, and towards the state of the end of correction, which everyone is advancing towards, and if not with receiving in order to bestow in this world, in the body, then in the future to come in different forms, through everything falling into the Sitra Achra, into the other side, and then after it does, it rises and it's corrected.
Student: About what you just said, that we remember the past, that we were in some peak of the 19th and 20th century, and now we're just complaining about the present, drugs, depression, and the future is even worse. So what should come from this state?
M. Laitman: We have to publish to everyone what the future is, what the good future that could be, otherwise we are in fact advancing towards this good future, but in a very bad way, that's what we need. We need to understand, with respect to ourselves, it's spiritual work, and with respect to all of humanity, it's corporeal work, to explain to them how we can better our situation, our corporeal situation, that's all we need to explain to the general public. In fact it is the same work, only by coming closer to one another, only by breaking all of the walls between us, and by that we will discover the good future. There's nothing more to do, this is also for us, and also for the general public. The It's on two levels. We're on a higher level, but it is still the same work. We have no other work other than annulling all of the borders between us.
Question (PT 25): (25:05) If I understood, so the Creator is expecting us that we should explain all the reasons to humanity. Expecting it from people who are still in the darkness and don't feel the good. So how can someone succeed in this, to explain something he doesn't feel yet?
M. Laitman: Whoever doesn't feel doesn't feel. What are you asking? I don't understand.
Student: I'm asking if somebody is still in the darkness and not in spirituality. For his advancement, he has to explain to humanity the reasons for everything, the wisdom of Kabbalah. How can he do it correctly if he's still in the darkness?
M. Laitman: He should just share what Kabbalists are saying. Not from himself, but what Kabbalists are saying. Very simple. Very simple. He should take some excerpts from Kabbalists that he thinks are suitable for the general public. Maybe even rewrite them to make it suitable to the public and publish it wherever the broad audience can read it or hear or see it. That's what needs to be done. The fact that he is no expert or doesn't understand doesn't mean anything.
Question (PT 10): (26:52) In the beginning of the lesson you gave us a few points. You said that if you don't relate correctly to what the vessels feel, so by this you're not planting the vessels in the ground. You're stopping your advancement. And also disregarding the descents. So by that a person doesn't advance. So the question is how or when does the attitude change towards the states he gets?
M. Laitman: By what?
Student: And when.
M. Laitman: And when? Does the attitude for the vessels in a person change?
Student: That his vessels are spilled out. When does he start relating to it correctly that the vessels are spilled out and he takes it correctly?
M. Laitman: No, he doesn't take it correctly ever, and we've spoken about this. He didn't hear. We spoke about this. We are not returning to vessels that have fallen. If it's fallen, it's fallen. That's it. It should be seen in your eyes as new. I always advance with new thoughts, new vessels. Everything is always anew. Every single moment should be anew.
Student: I'm asking about the attitude toward, not the vessels themselves. When does a person change his attitude towards that? Because you said that most people that leave it's because they can't change the attitude towards the fact that his vessels are spilled out.
M. Laitman: And?
Student: You said that when we read the articles, there's articles that we get inspired by and articles like this that we're not really inspired by because it's speaking about the opposite side of sanctity. Now, we're reading this. They're explaining the process. Why can't we get the right attitude for our vessels being spilt?
M. Laitman: We cannot receive the right attitude for all of our exertion in every awakening that we have. That when we receive something, we relate it to ourselves, not to the Creator. That's why when it disappears, I supposedly am in a state of, I have no mood. I blame the Creator for losing it because I think that what I had I gained, and that by being in a descent, that's my work, and not that it comes from above. I don't feel that the Creator gives and the Creator takes. That's why my attitude is in accordance to that. However, if I understand that everything comes from above, and I need to give whatever is from on my side and relate myself to the ascents and descents in such a way that I mainly need to awaken towards ascents, and what happens later on is that the ascent ends and a descent begins or even a fall, as we spoke, then I treat it regularly. I can even experience that 200 times a minute. It's more and more. You can say, what's the benefit? You had an ascent 200 times, but you also had a descent 200 times. What's the benefit of that? It is that until this sea of the Sitra Achra [the other side], will not be filled, listen to the calculation, until this portion of the Sitra Achra will not be fulfilled, the path does not end. Everything eventually needs to fall to the Sitra Achra , to the other side, like the same example with a cup. If I take this vessel and I go and I fill it with coins, from the king's treasure, and then I go out and it's poured out again, I go in again, and I fill it up, and it's poured out for me again. I don't want to go back there anymore, but I'm forced to go in, fill up the cup, and then I go out and I pour it out again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and that's what we're all doing until the end of correction, until the end of correction. The difference is, those that don't attain the spiritual vessel, they do it out of lack of choice, and those that do attain the spiritual method, they do it out of their own freedom of choice. And it's not that it becomes easier for them, they govern the desire of theirs to do that. It means that you agree with the flavors that the Creator has given you, and in such a way, that is how we advance, until we reach a state that everything is in the Klipa, and our exertion is in sanctity. And then, it was swallowed and then spilled out again, and all the vessels of reception, meaning the sea of Sitra Achra, they rise, they come back to life, that's called the revival of the dead, and then they get the force in order to bestow, and then the Klipa becomes Kedusha [sanctity].
Student: I'm asking, when do I enter it with my own desire?
M. Laitman: Where?
Student: To that place where the vessels are spilt.
M. Laitman: Okay, that isn't willingly, but you yourself want to decide that you receive the light in order to bestow, and in order to continue, then you have to empty yourself. There are also actions here, it's called the striking between the inner light and the surrounding light that you force the screen to be purified, because you see that only like that you can go with your new desire, the new realization.
Student: When does that recognition to this process start?
M. Laitman: Whenever you'll have screens, it all depends on the screen in order to bestow.
Student: We just read the article, I really for the first time understand after so many years.
M. Laitman: I know that most didn't even notice this article.
Student: And you said in the beginning that there's such articles, and those articles, and the articles that are opposite of sanctity, we disregard them. So I'm asking, we read this together, is this bringing us closer to this recognition that we will work from our own desire? What's the trigger? That the Ten will take this and work with it with their own desire that their vessels are being spilt.
M. Laitman: I don't know what to answer you. You're demanding from me to do the work instead of you. You have to sit together with all seriousness, every single Ten, and decide how we can apply what we read in the article. That this article will begin to work on us. How we can begin to ignite it, to get it going. Just like we ignite a motor. How do we do that to make it work? It needs to work together with the help of each and every one towards the others in the small groups. I hope that you review these articles again throughout the day. Otherwise, the benefit from it is very small. And if one person who doesn't have anyone to do it with, then you can download it from the archive, the lesson, and listen to it again.
Student: This period when we started reading the articles again, you're probably expecting us to work with it in the Ten and come back to that spiritual portion we get in the lesson. So I'm asking by reading this and thinking about the states, what is the optimum way to make sure this article does work on the Ten? How not to disregard it? How not to miss it out? This is what I'm crying about.
M. Laitman: That's the biggest problem, you're right. It depends on what extent we'll push into it. But still, all of these things, they need to be with love and with understanding that it's like a wheel that's turning around, that when one goes forward, the other one goes backwards. And we do all of that under There is None Else Besides Him, and He will guide us, will help us in all of these things.
Student: In the meal on Sunday, when the friends hosted the meal, and the friend asked you about the point in the heart, and you said that it's, I heard you say for the first time that by that inner burning it ignites the spark. What's that inner burning? What's that point? How to focus on that inner burning?
M. Laitman: Prayer. No more, prayer. You want to ignite the spark, to have it fire up like a flame. Okay, a problem only through prayer. We have no other actions other than prayer. Upon each and every action, a prayer should be raised, from which we will reach its realization.
Question (Moscow 7): (38:35) I wrote down what you said in the lesson today, that in order to attain the future world, we need to break the walls between us, and annul all the borders. And that is the work.
M. Laitman: It is the same. It's the same, yes.
Question (Moscow 7): (39:02) In the beginning of the article, it said that if a person can't sustain the illumination constantly, his vessels aren't pure to resemble the light. So I wanted to ask, what does it mean to hold on to an illumination in pure vessels? Will that perception…
M. Laitman: Only through connection between the friends, you can hold on to this illumination. It does not exist in a single person. It's not revealed in one. Only in the connection between you. The upper light demands a Minyong, a Ten, it doesn't matter the number, it can be even two or five, Ten, but it demands that there'll be connection above the ego of the individual. There is a person and he works above his ego to connect to someone. Then already between them there can be a spiritual system. Of course, it's not so powerful, but it's still a spiritual system, that's why it says that the minimum is two.
Question (Latin 7): (40:34) A few days ago you explained how a Kabbalist feels ascents. My question is how does a Kabbalist feel ascent?
M. Laitman: The Kabbalist feels ascents and descents only as a means to prepare or to be guided to additional adherence, adhesion. Of course, there are states where he is incapable of doing anything, in mind and in heart. There is such a time, like dead time, it's given to a person on purpose, but after this passes, after this pause, this short break, he awakens and in each and each state he tries to build the actions of bestowal.
Question (Tel Aviv 4): (41:51) He writes that you can get vitality and pleasure in the future, also from the past and also from the future. That means to hold on to the illumination constantly?
M. Laitman: Yes, let's say so.
Question (PT 19): (42:18) You said a few minutes ago, pay attention to the most important sentence in the article, that I don't want anything for myself but to do actions for the benefit of the friends. What's the essence of such an action and why is it so important?
M. Laitman: Because by that you exit yourself and certainly work in order to bestow, and it's towards the friends. You can't really cheat yourself. Of course you do, but not completely. And that is why it is highly beneficial for advancing. Succeed.
Student: How do I do it?
M. Laitman: You'll do and then you'll share with us how you succeeded. Or if you didn't succeed, then you can check why.
Reader: Moving to the next part of the lesson, from July 11, 2006, the article is the Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah, item 70.
