Lesson 3: Adhering to the Friends

1.Rav’s Introduction: Yes, I am welcoming you all with a great blessing. I'm very happy to see you again in our meeting, in our lesson, lesson number three, on the topic of the convention Rising Above Ourselves and this lesson is called, “Adhering to the Friends.” So first of all, I would really not want to, but I must be due to the circumstances to nevertheless send a warm regards to our friends in Kazakhstan. I hope that everything there will return to routine and everything will work out, and we’ll help them in every possible way we can, all they have to do is tell us. Great health to you and peace. Lesson number 3, Adhering to the Friends: Rabash writes, “there is a special power in the adhesion of friends. Since the views and thoughts pass from one to the other through the adhesion between them; therefore each is mingled with the power of the other and by that each person in the group has the power of the entire society. This is from Article 14, The Need for Love of Friends, 1988. The need for love of friends is explained in that if I don't connect with them but rather with a good connection which is called “love,” I will not have where to receive my spiritual vessel from. And naturally I won't be able to receive the Creator, the upper world, and I will remain in my state, this lonely disconnected from everyone and feel only my egoistic, internal self. Therefore Rabash writes, that “there is a special power,” I would say a special virtue, a special result, a unique results from the adhesion of friends since as a result of the adhesion between them, the thoughts and desire that move from one another; meaning they connect in their thoughts and desires, and each wants to be connected with his friends then threw them all of the streams of upper light move through them and unite.

As a result of that, each receives, besides his personal ego, also the bestowal; meaning everyone is made of the thoughts and qualities of the whole group. Therefore each of them and all of them together appears this common vessel, this united vessel within which the Creator is revealed. That's why Rabash writes, “therefore each is included by the forces of the others and by that each has the power of the entire society. Meaning our advancement is built and dependent on the connection with one another, nothing else. You can know in an amazing way what's written in the books, you can be very knowledgeable, theoretically, of the wisdom of Kabbalah but never be people of action if you didn't have a group, if you didn't connect with everyone. As it's in the Arvut article and other articles of Baal HaSulam and Rabash, it is written about this everywhere. There's no point in looking anywhere, we were born egotistical, we separated, and if we rise above our egoism, our individual egoism, then we create such conditions in each of us that we can discover the upper world; meaning our advancement is built and dependent on the connection between us only. And only in it, we will reveal the upper world, the Creator. And as the extent of the connection between us builds the spiritual Kli, our common sensation, feeling, and it's all obtained by the connection and that's the most important thing. I would say only, but with that, it's also the essential thing, the decisive thing, the intensity, the power, the force of the connection between us.

WSQ. If so, I have a question: in what manner do we need to approach the attainment of the spiritual vessel in order to reveal the Creator in it? What do we need for that? What actions, thoughts, intentions, forces do we need to invest in order to get there?

2. R. (12:32) WSQ. We advance only to the extent of the connection between us. Only to the extent of the connection between us; but if so, how can we measure our movement forward, are we advancing or not? Meaning all our states from one day to another need to be measured relative to the advancement between us. We go through these states and come closer and closer between us or not. In what do we measure our advancement and what do we see its result? In this way, day after day, and maybe even several times a day, if we can measure the extent in which we advance because only that defines our spiritual growth, and the light will begin to come when we already begin to be in a state of connection, a normal connection, a clear connection, even minimal between us. If so, how do we do this? How can we from this moment onward measure our movements forward only to the extent of the growing connection between us?

3. R. (20:54) Now we are continuing our Convention.

2. RABASH, Article No. 21 (1986), "Concerning Above Reason"

Excerpt 2: “As a result of the adhesion between friends, we can attain new qualities by which we will receive, will qualify to achieve Dvekut with the Creator, meaning we don't have those qualities with which I can reach adhesion to the Creator. And, well of course, in such a way, in such a power, all of these qualities are in my friends, meaning I, the Malchut, which needs to incorporate within it, the quality of the first nine Sephirot and this is only possible if it performs a restriction on itself, restricts its egoism and only bestows and gives herself to the service and connection with the first nine Sephirot, this is the Malchut. Hence, we don't have any opportunity, no possibility to reach the creation of a vessel in which we will be able to reveal the Creator but by adhesion between friends to the adhesion with the Creator. This is all possible only if he sees the merits of the friends then it is relevant to say that he should learn from their actions, by looking at them but when he sees that he is better qualified than them, then there's nothing he can receive from the friends so he won't be able to come closer to the friends, he won't have the same qualities, he wouldn't have the qualities with which he could come closer to the Creator. Rav reads again, “through adhesion of the friends they can obtain new qualities, to receive from them, as they will be qualified to achieve Dvekut with the Creator. And this can all be said while he sees the merits of their friends. At that time it is relevant to say that he should learn from their actions. But when he sees that he is better qualified than they are, there is nothing he can receive from the friends, naturally, he won't have the same qualities within which to reveal the Creator.” Meaning to reveal the Creator in my qualities, I cannot. Only if I annul myself relative to the friends and absorb within me their qualities? And this is the way with all of us.

4. WSQ. How to see in my friends only exalted, superior, upper qualities?

5. R. (27:20) WSQ. Meaning in an ideal state we could say that I see before me an ideal world, ideal people, ideal friends. And only, I, with my egoism see in them faults, deficiencies in the friends, in the world, in everything. So how do I calibrate myself gradually, slowly, slowly change myself such that I will see a true picture of the world? Where is everything filled only with the Creator and that there is None Else Besides Him? How do I do this? By the friends together and the whole world in order to reach a state in which the Creator exists and fills the whole world?

6. R. (32:00) If so, I need not to forget about the fact that everything that I feel in all of my five senses, my egoism is depicting it to me, and it is showing to me who or what is the world around me and what is the group. And it's only through my egoism that I receive all of that. And therefore if I, in some form, yearn nevertheless, to see my world not the way that my egoism is painting it to me and I can do that only through an effort from the outside, an effort by the group, then I can rise above this egoistic perception and start to feel instead of it, the Creator's world. How do we do that? It is done in a very simple way.

Excerpt 3" RABASH, Article No. 21 (1986), "Concerning Above Reason"

Excerpt #3 (Rav reads): “When the evil inclination comes and shows him the lowliness of the friends, he should go above reason”, that is, above what he sees. But certainly even though he can see each friend in some form that he's not nice, he should, to the contrary through his efforts, he should elevate the friend as high as possible; “but certainly if would have been better and more successful if he could see within reason,” within his reason, “that the friends are at a higher degree than his own.” But if he doesn't see it within his reason then he has to imagine it to himself with faith above reason. That the friends, even though and in spite of what he sees and what he thinks, they are above him. (Rav reads again) “When the evil inclination comes and shows him the lowliness of the friends, he should go above reason. But certainly it would have been better and more successful if he could see within reason that the friends are at a higher degree than his own.” And from that, the conclusion is in order to get out of any situation, the best, the safest and indeed the only correct way out is to raise, to elevate the friends in your eyes. That is, in any given moment, at any time I should think about how to hold them high up, higher and higher in my sensations, my views, my impressions, etc. that should be my constant work. And then I reach a state in which through them, I will see the Creator.

7. S. (35:36) From what I understand, you said that if I want to see an ideal world, see that there's None Else Besides Him, the first stage I need to see is friends as great?

R. Yes, if we want to see the upper world, we can see it only through my corrected qualities and my corrected qualities, how can I understand them and receive them, adapt them, improve them? This is possible only to the extent that I elevate the group, and my friends in my eyes, in my eyes, I uplift them, and this is within our power, this is something that is practically before us. This is how we should operate, this is how we should act, this is a very good correct calibration for the spiritual world. This is why the Creator made it so and we need to try to use it all the time even though our ego is and will constantly hinder us in that.

8. S. (36:52) What does it mean that I'm trying to see the friend in a greater degree? What is that quality I'm trying to depict of myself?

R. They’re above me, above myself in everything, they are above me.

S. Is there some kind of spiritual qualities that are with the Creator?

R. In everything, in everything.

9. S. (38:08) A practical action that can help the 10 to intensify connection above reason?

R. Practically, we can change the manner in which we see the friends in our eyes only through our efforts, when we understand the necessity for it, what were read about in excerpts one and two, that only to the extent that the friends will be above me, will be uplifted elevated in my eyes, then I will reach estate while I will discover the Creator. Because the Creator exists behind the friends to the extent that I elevate them in my eyes, to that same extent I come closer to the Creator. Well, at least that, and the other thing is that I constantly have to fight it. That the friends are small, they fall in my eyes because automatically each and every moment, every moment, my egoism simply throws me down. And to the same extent I disregard everyone and to that same extent therefore I disregard the Creator even if I don't count for myself that. Is that clear?

10. S. (40:45) The Creator protects me by keeping me in the state of smallest, the lowest possible, lowly. He kind of depicts to me that I'm in greatness and perfection but the perfect state is only in the friends?

R. Only in the friends.

S. So when I depict the friends in perfection and I reflect them back on myself then for the first time that we have an opportunity?

R. Yes, yes, it's true that is a correct understanding of these things

11. S. (41:33) Why is it preferable and better to see the merit of the friends within reason and not above reason?

R. Because it is true, in principle, above reason when you try to elevate them above reason it is simply in order to artificially rise above your egoism but afterwards, you nevertheless reach the state in which you discover everything within your reason.

S. We first worked only above reason?

R. Beside the egoism there is nothing in us so this is why we tried to jump above it, to rise above it. And to look at the world as if we are observing it from non-egotistical eyes, precisely so, yes.

S. I wanted to ask if I understood correctly: we need to work in faith above reason and then when we work on our desire and corrected qualities, we see the friends within reason. Then new coarseness is revealed and erases everything and we have to work again above reason?

R. It doesn't erase us, it simply elevates us to a higher degree, to a higher, taller egoistic mountain and then you have to go on faith above reason on a new level.

S. Let's say I convince myself each time within me, in my thoughts, that the friends are greater than me, and despite my ego shows me something else, I convinced myself like that mechanically that the friends are greater than me. Is that enough or do we need to do something else?

R. Start from that and later on you will see how to operate, you'll be guided from above. But this is the most correct attitude towards the world then you will start to see the world correctly not in a form that is distorted by your egoism. Not in a form that is distorted by your egoism. Okay?

12. S. (44:13) When does the prayer enter here in me wanting to see the merits of the friends? Before we reach above reason or the prayer also belongs to above reason?

R. Yes, the prayer also belongs to above reason if I do not attain, but I only ask if I just depict it to myself, this is faith above reason.

13. S. (45:01) I wanted to ask, at first in the beginning of the article he says that the evil inclination comes and shows us the lowliness and that we need to go above reason, but we don't succeed to go above reason always, so at that moment how can we work in the ten with the friends where I don't succeed to go above reason and I see the lowness in the friends?

R. Hold on wait. Above reason is above your perception, above your feeling. I see my friends, are you listening or are you laughing? I see my friends, I see your group Italy three, I see you seem to be in your ordinary state. I have a certain perception regarding you, in order to elevate myself higher towards the Creator I need to depict you not the Creator not myself but you on one level higher and to try to connect with you on that level on which I depict you imagine you. This is what it's called to go with faith above reason and this time each time higher up and higher up. And it doesn't matter to me what I see, about that they say they have eyes but do not see they have ears but do not hear, but rather like that I depict you higher up and even higher up and I want to be with you in adhesion with you and in such a way I bring myself to a state where through you I begin to see the Creator. That is all. This is called to go above my reason. Reason is what I see what I hear and above it means that I depict you one degree higher, better, more pure, and so on.

S. I was laughing I'm sorry it's my emotions, the fact that I …

R. I understand I love you.

S. We love you very much too.

14. S. (48:12) If I see the friends as greater than me how can I be in prayer for them? How can I be in prayer for the friends if I see them as greater than me?

R. You pray in order to truly be together with them. If you depict them as higher than yourself then you should be in a prayer that you want to be together with them in adhesion with them, and that way you pull yourself you elevate the group above you and then you pull yourself with your prayer you pull yourself there. You have no other possibility and then once again you depict them as higher than yourself and even higher and once again through the prayer you pull yourself up to their degree. But you want to be with them and that way all the time all the time you pull yourself and this is the method of assent. It is a simple and practical method.

15. S. (49:43) In what eyes do we see a real world and a not real world?

R. The true world that we see we see it out of her ego but we want to see it not from within the impressions of our ego but rather the way it truly is and we pull ourselves to that state gradually through the degrees and this is what we are talking about how I can do it. The group that I am with, in it, of inside it I try to process all of this, meaning to see the group as better as higher and if I actualize that, then the world I will also see it a lot deeper as transparent and in it gradually I will see the Creator as becoming revealed before me. This is clear?

16. S. (51:10) In the corrected state, if in the corrected state the world is corrected, why do we say the world is deteriorating?

R. We are talking according to how we see it but that deterioration in fact it was intended to push us to correction so that through me I’ll be able to see the world as whole.

17. S. (51:48) During the starting of the lesson you made circles for us, asking questions and during that circle it felt like I'm looking at myself from outside of myself but when I'm observing myself outside of myself who is the one who observes me? Do I attain that state, society, or the Creator? Who is the one that attains that feeling?

R. Listen Akbar. I am saying the most simple things. I need to aim myself to the Creator, there is None Else Besides Him, and I have to direct myself to him in order to aim towards him. I have a device through which I can aim myself, that device is the group. If I aim the group in such a way that my ego will keep diminishing gradually and I will be able to look not through it but through the quality of bestowal through the quality of connection and love, then I can reach the attainment of a state where I discover the Creator and this is what we are engaging in.

That is all. There is nothing else. In fact the method is very practical, very concrete. I have to aim myself through the group to the Creator. The group in its ideal state it clothes over the Creator entirely, it is in complete adhesion with him, but in my perception, I am on the degree of zero, maybe even minus. That is, I in my eyes must elevate the group each time higher up and higher up each and every friend and all of them together and then in the end I elevate myself to such a degree my perception my view, my sight, so that I begin to see everything through the group and therefore it is said from the love of people to the love of the Creator. There is no other method. This is what we have before us in our world, man, the society, humanity, and the Creator.

18. S. (55:02) How is it best to exercise in seeing every friend as greater and higher or the whole group as such?

R. Both this way and that way, this way and that way.

19. S. (55:22) I see that everyone in the group, in the ten are high and perfect and how to suggest good suggestions to improve what we're doing?

R. If you would see the ten in everything as higher than you truly you wouldn't hide from it but rather you would truly then see the whole world through the ten then you would see the Creator. Then the ten would become a spiritual Partzuf a spiritual Kli and you as Malchut and the Creator as the one who feels all of the first nine Sephirot and in that everything ends that is everything. This is clear right?

20. S. (56:22) If within reason I see the friends in connection much higher than me how to climb towards them, towards them what needs to be in this prayer so it won't be a prayer for myself from being disconnected from the ten?

R. The prayer can also be about myself. I'm trying to correct myself, I'm praying for myself but before that maybe I have a prayer which is in favor of seeing the friends on a higher degree above myself and then I pray to rise to that degree in which I see them. Meaning to reach for the sake of adhesion with them so I raised them above me and then I ask of the Creator that he will give me the possibility to connect with the friends and this is how I am drawn I'm pulled up I elevate the group in my eyes and then I pull myself to it.

21. S. (58:01) There are no problems in me seeing the friends as great, on the contrary I'm not worthy of them and they are unattainable by me. How to see myself as part of the group when you're in a descent and they are ahead?

R. Fall on their hands if you are in a descent fall on their hands. Be like a baby in the hands of a mother that is all nothing then is scary.

S. It simply happens a lot

R. And in such a way you'll continue rising. Annul yourself before the group and it will elevate you. To the same measure that you will feel yourself as lower than the group the Creator will start to correct you.

22. S. (59:08) How can I combine between my lowness and ability to give to friends?

R. You are giving them all of your strength for the sake of the general advancement even though you feel yourself as lowly if you are a part of a group and you adhere to then your investment is truly great

23. S. (59:45) I have a feeling that the woman's problem is not that we see our friends lower than us but that we’re just completely different, it's even worse than seeing them as low. What can we do in such a state?

R. Yes for women that is easier on one hand but nevertheless she needs to work. For a woman, the spiritual path is somewhat easier than for the man.

Excerpt 4: RABASH, Article No. 17 (1987), "The Meaning of the Strict Prohibition to Teach Idol Worshipers the Torah"

(01:04:02)

RAV: One cannot receive the influence of the society if he is not attached to the society meaning if he does not appreciate them. To the extent that he does, he can receive from them the influence without any work. Without any work, without any effort simply by adhering to the society.

Again Excerpt 4: It is impossible to receive the influence of society if he is not attached to the society, meaning if he does not appreciate them. To the extent that he does, he can receive from them the influence without any work simply by adhering to the society. Meaning there's no hard work to do, nothing, except for connecting with the group and everything will come through the connections between us from above. The revelation of the Creator will come that is basically what we need. We do not expect anything else, there is nothing else. The revelation of the Creator will happen through the connection between us and in such a way we will reach the goal. Understood.

24. S. (01:05:44) New friends have connected to us from campus, from the course and this question came up between us. Could you explain what a friend is because this word has a lot of usage?

R. Friend, Haver comes from the word Ibur, connection. With whom am I connecting towards the purpose of creation, that person is called Haver, friend and no one else. Understood?

25. S. (01:06:34) No one has internet and the groups from Moscow are supporting me and I'm thanking them and I am asking something that is worrying everybody. What is the correction that the Kazakhstan group is going through? How should we see the perfection of the Creator in there?

R. We see the Creator does not let us rest. That He precisely shakes us, wants us to rise above our egoistic selves. That we will stop to at least appreciate the ego that we are in. I truly hope that we will understand that and begin to somewhat pull ourselves out of there. This all depends on us, only on us. And if we begin to make an effort to pray, meaning to ask the Creator that He will lower me towards the group and raise the group then through the group I ascend and can see the Creator that stands behind them.

26. S. (01:08:29) We talked about pride a few days ago in the lesson and you said that I am also a very proud man and we are talking about the greatness of the friends that we have to see them as great. What pride are we talking about in the group?

R. We already have known each other for many years. Pride is what doesn't allow me to see myself as lower than the friend. This quality is called pride.

S. How to work with this pride in the group, a person who is on the path for a long time and somehow is not able to overcome this quality?

R. It stands against spirituality. All the qualities in spirituality are either in plus or minus but there is nothing besides spirituality. Any quality that we can imagine, we can describe it as anti-spiritual. It is ‘anti,’ but it is still with respect to spirituality because besides the quality of bestowal of the Creator there's nothing else. Also whatever appears to be against Him, is against Him everything is measured only according to the Creator. We have to set the clear boundary between the qualities that are for, and the qualities that are against and everything will be okay. Review these lessons that we are doing now carefully, and they will open to you the door in a clear way. I understand you. There are many women here who are engaged in this for a long time, for many years. Everything will work just fine. You will see how everything accumulates. In

our world there is ultimately nothing that is worth it. The spiritual world however will come and fill everything.

27. S. (01:11:22) To connect and adhere to the friends, that is great work, a great effort. In Excerpt #4, it says, “with no effort”. Can you explain what that means?

R. If I cling to the group it says, “to the extent that he appreciates the friends, to that extent he can receive influence from them without any work by simply adhering to the society.” This is the meaning of “without any work.” I do not need to make any effort that I am unable to do. I need to do the kinds of efforts where my attitude to the group takes place, meaning our whole ascension happens to the extent of connection in the group. And the connection depends on the greatness of the group.

S. Can you say the extent to which we can appreciate the friends is easier and we can do that without efforts?

R. Of course, to the extent of your appreciation and your submission to the friends. To the extent of your connection with the friends, to that extent I enter the spiritual world, the spiritual qualities. Because I need to nullify my egoism, connect them to me and to that extent I become similar to The Creator, and then everything opens up to me to that extent. That is how it is on every degree and that is how we have to work on ourselves in connection with the group, connection with the Creator. Because the connection with the group is the building of the Kli; the connection with the Creator is the filling of that Kli with light and on the next degrees, the same thing, connection with the group, connection with the Creator.

S. To the extent that we see the friends greater than us, it’s suffering to the ego. So should we keep going more and more in order for the pain of the ego to increase until we reveal the Creator?

R. You have to get yourself accustomed to the thought so that it will not awaken suffering in you but gratitude to the Creator for doing this to you, for allowing you to do this so that you can ask from Him and you have a direct means here to rise here to a new degree. To the extent that you come closer to the group, you come closer to the Creator. And coming closer to them is possible to the extent that you lower yourself. You have to ask of the Creator to raise their importance in your eyes and then it will not be difficult.

28. S. (01:14:44) During the preparation for the lesson, we got a question in the ten, how can we discern between the qualities of the friends that are serving the Creator and they’re own qualities?

R. With all the qualities that you can connect to your friends, it is all qualities of the Creator, it’s all spiritual qualities and all the rest, isn’t.

29. S. (01:15:22) How do I feel that there's a Creator behind the group?

R. When you attain connection with the group you will see that behind the group stands the Creator, it is automatic, because the Creator, Himself you cannot see, you can only see Him when He's dressed in the group. So when you connect with the group you will discover the Creator there, outside the group, you will never see Him. The upper light can be revealed only within a Kli.

30. S. (01:16:22) Is it enough to connect with only part of the friends to discover the Creator or should the whole ten connect?

R. No, with all the friends who can participate with you, it doesn't matter if it is half the ten or not. Most importantly is that you are together yearning and realize the conditions for the revelation of the Creator, and the rest will join when they can.

31. S. (01:17:12) Is adhering to society not considered work, already?

R. Of course it is considered work. It’s considered spiritual work, building the Kli is considered spiritual work.

32. S. (01:17:49) In the second excerpt, there's an expression that “he's studying from their action”. What does it mean “to study from their actions,” it is probably about some spiritual action?

R. Man wants to learn from his friends the actions and he considers their actions spiritual. And so he appreciates them and tries to resemble them so that he corrects himself, and that he himself becomes spiritual.

S. And if the ten is not so active, there are very few physical actions and I constantly try to overcome this in order to see what the Creator is showing me behind this. Should I nevertheless try to initiate the discussion in the ten, to raise the importance of the action?

R. Of course all of that is needed, how much can I talk about it? Do you review the lessons again? I don't know, I have not said anything new and still I'm hearing the same question. Listen to the Q&As because people ask good questions.

Excerpt #5 (01:19:44 - 01:20:13) “When they are bundled and attached together in complete unity. At that time, they are regarded as one, and the Creator is upon them, for He is one. But when their hearts divide and they are apart from one another, they cannot be adhered to the One and the Creator is not on them.”

R. This is obvious, there's nothing new here.

Excerpt 6. Baal HaSulam, Letter No. 47

Excerpt 6 (01:20:18) “Let me remind you the validity of love of friends in spite of everything at this time, for it is upon this that our right to exist depends, and upon this our near-to-come success is measured. Hence,” Baal HaSulam writes, ”turn away from all the imaginary engagements and set your hearts on thinking thoughts and devising proper tactics to truly connect your hearts as one.”

33. R. (01:20:55) In other words, to make out of ourselves such a connection that our thoughts, our feelings, our goals, they are all as one, they complement each other. Sure they are all different thoughts, feelings, actions, they're all different but they will complement each other. To the point that they are one heart, one thought. That state is called Adam from the word Domeh similar to the Creator.

34. S. (01:21:37) According to which signs can I see the influence of the group on me?

R. According to the same signs of you wanting to bend your own head and accept only what they think and what they want and conduct yourself accordingly.

35. S. (01:22:08) Today, we spoke about how we have to see the friend's qualities and what to say if I see deficiencies and there's no internal reaction to these lacks. What is it, indifference, spiritual death?

R. You should right in front of your walls, everywhere around you, that the most important thing in my life is to reach the appreciation of the group. And to feel in relation to them, like a little baby that hasn't finished its development, that is the most accurate state.

36. S. (01:23:22) In order to see if we are truly connected between us, we should ask ourselves if we are willing to put our hearts in the hands of our friends. Is this what needs to happen?

R. Yes. If we attain such a state then of course it is already the most exalted correction.

37. S. (01:23:56) The question that is troubling us in what we are studying. We hear about the different roles of the ego and we want to understand if the ego is our enemy that keeps disturbing us or is it a friend that is helping us to build a ladder on which we rise to the Creator?

R. Very true. The ego shows us how opposite we are to the Creator, in that it really helps us.

38. S. (01:24:42) How to see the ten as great and connect to them and also to see myself?

R.
