Part 2:

Baal HaSulam. The Nation (The Individual and the Nation)

Reading (00:32) “We humans are social beings…

1. S. (22:57) There’s a very interesting part here about what we feel today, he explains it in a historical way. Why aren't there just two states: love in the nation and hatred in the nation so we can work between them? There is also like a shell of national love, excessive national love that turns into fascism, chauvinism when only through hating the others they can unite. Why does that third form exist?

R. This is an extreme form of the ego, nothing special here.

S. It is just that people get confused between the love of their nation. If you ask your neighbors do you love your nation, they will say yes but should we kill our enemies to be happy?

R. Yes.

S. Why do people confuse it with love?

R. Because if you love whoever is against you then you are an enemy to your nation, and if you hate the enemy and destroy the enemy then you are a hero to your nation. That’s it.

S. So it’s a confusion in the world. Why did the Creator not just build two extreme states, shattering and hatred and love? That way people can choose but otherwise they’re confused. They think they’re in love but they’re not.

R. But then you wouldn't be able to turn hatred to love. It would be like, say with animals. When you train them, they give themselves to you for food.

S. So there’s a task to turn hatred into love?

R. How otherwise? That’s the whole thing.

S. But that hatred is developing towards other nations.

R. It needs to be identified as incorrect hatred that should be transformed to a correct awareness of what do I hate and what do I love.

S. In the corrected state again, it’s a painful thing. The neighbors that are shooting missiles at you now, what? They’re going to start loving you, they’re going to start loving the neighbors?

R. No, it does not happen in one step, you cannot do it in one go, but we do know about all kinds of cases where previously bitter enemies turned into true friends.

S. So you see that eventually that state will happen?

R. I am certain that it has to be because the more hatred becomes revealed the more love will become revealed.

S. How can we help to determine not to reach such an extreme?

R. You have to explain it in a way that it’s a law of nature and otherwise we can’t do anything. Only if we understand the law of nature, that’s it.

S. But here we can't come to this love between one another, there has to be love of the world that you can really uplift above all differences.

R. Ultimately that’s what will happen because from the covenant in the ten we come to a covenant with the Creator. Thus, we transcend all the laws of nature in connection, in love and all the forces of nature connect within us, that’s both hate and love.

2. S. (28:00) A lot is said here about the independence of a nation. We as the group of Bnei Baruch, we are the true nation of Israel. What should we do in order to truly turn into an independent nation and everybody will feel that there is such a true nation?

R. For that we just have to connect between us meaning the people who have an inner motion towards attainment of the Creator, they have to connect between them so as to form the conditions for His revelation.

S. And the independence, in what is it expressed? That we support that flame of love from responsibility in the group and everything external to us isn’t a cause for connection anymore?

R. Of course. The more internally we connect, the less we’ll pay attention to externality. To the point that for you, connecting to another person who has a different mentality or other external symbols, that will not play any role, that everything depends on where we’re going.

S. Why the more our group exists we start paying attention more to external wars? It’s like the Creator throws more externality towards us and we respond to that more?

R. The Creator throws at us all kinds of external signs so that through them we recognize the interdependence of all of nature, of the whole of nature. That both the external part and the inner part of nature will be in our understanding as a single thing, interlocked.

3. S. (31:00) Can we say that the uniqueness of love of the people of Israel, the Jewish people is that it’s built upon a general egoism of all nations as a sum of all their ego, the perfect ego and only that way the uniqueness is, that love can be true?

R. Yes.

4. S. (31:37) He explained in much detail what a nation is, how it’s built, how to put the bases down and after the base is there how it should work towards other nations.

R. Yes.

S. From that basis it becomes even more clear that the people of Israel aren’t a nation, not anything. To begin with we came from different places and different nations and we weren’t successful in holding on and we were separated because of hatred and we went into exile 2,000 years ago. Since then we are in the exile, accumulating even more other cultures, more distance between us and now we supposedly were brought here like that bag of nuts because of anti-Semitism. Here in Israel we’re not a nation and now he's explaining that we have to re-educate ourselves in order to rebuild a nation. That’s the solution he’s telling us, that’s what I understand.

R. Yes.

S. It’s not clear what education can you give in order to make a nation from all this mess. What will be common, on what basis from people that are completely not connected to one another and even hate each other?

R. The nation needs to be built only on a spiritual basis, it has no other basis, there is none. If you take any other nation it has territory, culture, education, all kinds of things towards the future from their father's, their mothers, their children but not the Israeli nation. To the point that like Baal HaSulam says, “We are brothers in arms.” Meaning that if not for the plight that descends on all of us then I wouldn't even feel like there is someone here next to me in the same state as I am and therefore he’s close to me. That is the law that maintains the people of Israel so far.

S. Clear, but it’s not clear how to bring the people here in Israel to a spiritual education?

R. Tell them as much as possible and the rest the Creator will finish for me but there is no other choice, it’s the only way.

5. S. (35:17) There's a great external pressure from this war but there's also a saying that I awaken the dawn and not the dawn awakening me. How can we awaken the dawn and not the dawn awaken us?

R. We have to long, yearn for connection as quickly as possible, faster than the wars push us and what they do with us.

6. S. (36:30) He writes here, Baal HaSulam that it’s clear that the measure of egoism imprinted in every creature is essential for it to exist, that without it it wouldn’t be a separated object on its own. Still it doesn’t contradict the altruistic part in a person, he just needs to put a clear border between them. So what is that border limit we have to put between us?

R. We have to advance and see how nature will play with us.

S. What does that mean?

R. I don't have more to continue right now. We’ll end the lesson and continue everything in the noon lesson.
