Faith Above Reason - Selected Excerpts from the Sources. #205
1. Rav’s Introduction: Yes, entering faith above reason requires a person to express a lot of desire to discover the great sum total of the efforts, long effort throughout different states and to learn from them. Where the person stands regarding this matter of faith, faith above reason, how much this carries him in two different directions, how much it is closing and opening the way for him and how much he is capable of keep going despite all of the obstacles that are revealed both from the right and left and he is not feeling despair but he is going forward until he finds the right connection to faith above reason. This means that he connects to the Creator above all the obstacles and believes in the Creator above everything that she may see in his life and this is how he ultimately reaches and opening of a connection seemingly a ray of light from above that shows him how much the upper force is in control of the whole of reality, so please let read.
Reading 45 (02:15) Baal HaSulam, Shamati, Article No. 205, “Wisdom Cries Out in the Streets” Twice
2. R. (04:45) And the person has to try to reach contact with the Creator even in the descents, specifically in descents when he is seemingly closer to the Creator because in those states the Creator comes down to the person and then it is easier for the person to reach the Creator. He should think how to do that, how to turn to the Creator in the right way in those descents and then he will succeed.
3. S. (05:25) How to rejoice specifically in the descents?
R. First of all when there is a connection with the Creator the person is happy. Second, when the person feels that he's in connection with the Creator even in descents, what is more important for him, the descent or ascent? Or does he want to determine that he is connected to the Creator? How can he be connected to the Creator? Because the Creator every time and in any state he relates to him as the good that does good so even the person even if he does not see it and he's not capable of seeing it yet he should still relate to the Creator as the good that does good.
Then it turns out that the same actions that the Creator does bringing the person into all kinds of unpleasant states, those states the Creator specifically is preparing the person through the sections so the person not doesn't matter what he feels he can relate to the Creator the same way, with loyalty, with love and connection, and dedication and so on. This is why specifically in states of descent he can determine his correct attitude to the Creator because we have certain aspects that are against the connection, not necessarily bringing the created being to the Creator but we are capable of connecting to him about those states.
4. S. (07:59) The quality of the spies, it seems like no matter where I look in order to appreciate the situation that is taking place, the spies enter right away and then the work starts and the question is, despite these spies is there anything else that is announcing something to me? Is het only through them that I can get the information?
R. The spies are your selfish desires that wake up in you, and they tried to obstruct your connection to the Creator and then you should know how you answer them because the way you are answering them is the way you are building yourself and this way bit-by-bit you place a force against them. In this way, through this force or thanks to this force you are going to have contact with the Creator, even during wars and spies and distance and collision etc.
S. Can we say that it is the same thing as thinking of the nations of the world and when they will be corrected then it will be a different quality?
R. Yes when the spies become corrected they become the strongest connection with the Creator that's why they write that the Angel of Death becomes the holy angel.
5. S. (10:18) In the text I see an invitation to be satisfied from the state we are in, and we do not need specifically to prepare an increasing deficiency to the Creator. So don't we need an increasing deficiency, why should we get satisfied from the state?
R. Of course we should develop an increasing deficiency to the Creator. On the one hand we are content and we are thankful to the Creator shining and awakening us from the worst state and on the other hand he needs to be thankful for as one thing to rise to connection, to adhesion and to be not content with the state he is showing us but instead he does lead us to an embrace and connection, to adhesion, meaning in our discovery of our state with the Creator there is a bad state we are not agreeing with and a good state where we do agree with.
6. S. (12:07) To believe in the Creator and to address the Creator how to help the ten to do this? So that I myself do not know how to do this.
R. You should try to help the friends with everything you can, meaning rise above your own mood, your own desire and help the others as if you had the strength as Rabash is writing about the friends in his first articles when you have to relate to the society and how you should behave. You have to take everything and take it sentence by sentence and implement it in practice.
7. S. (13:15) So what does it mean to pay attention to every state that the Creator brings me?
R. That in every state that I go through in my life, in every moment I discover how much I can from that moment to adhere to the Creator because in each and every moment there is a new Reshimot waking up and I should use it in order to adhere myself to the Creator.
S. Is that the actual force the Creator gives me so give me a little power to overcome, this is the attention?
R. Yes of course, he does not need to give you anymore all the rest is upon you and your environment. The Creator awakens a little bit of the person’s personal Reshimo and the person needs to awaken the environment to connect his Reshimo to the Reshimot of the environment and in such he reaches at state where he awakens everybody, meaning the whole ten including himself to adhesion with the Creator. This is considered that he is realizing the Reshimo that he used to have that the Creator works on.
S. So we have to awaken the Creator by having a request to him. I recognise the state and I need to make effort and exertion and ask for his help?
R. Yes.
8. S. (15:00) A person that is in a state can he disqualify the Creator in such as state or can he be with a broken heart because we know that there is nothing wholer than a broken heart, so how to correct the attitude correctly to the Creator in the state of descent?
R. The main thing is to feel that even though you have a feeling of descent and the distance and darkness that he feels and he does not have strength and he does not have the mood it is all his personal emotions. And the truth is that even in such state you are in adhesion with the Creator there is no state besides the adhesion to the Creator, it is only that everything is in respect to the person that the person has to correct his own state and viewpoint so he can truly feel adhesion in each and every state. This is the process the person has to go through, that is our spiritual scrutiny and spiritual development, that from the Creator comes different states of adhesion all the time and even though it seems to be opposite to him from his side, what he should discover all the time is that we are in adhesion and this work is called the work of overcoming.
9. S. (16:54) Before you said that we have to come to a state that we pay attention that it depends on the person and the environment and to the extent that the person is waking up the environment. Where does the person have the strength to awaken the environment?
R. The person has the strength to awaken the environment first of all because he is connected to the environment and even if he is in a broken vessel that is being revealed but nonetheless this shattering appears in a single vessel, and this is why it seems to me that everything depends on the person. How much the person places himself, how much he ties himself to the group and the Creator and he does not forget that there is nothing here besides being shown that is already there in a connection and in the hands of the Creator and friends around him and it is only concealed from him here and there to wake him up to want the true desire.
You need to make an effort to imagine this situation where each and everyone is in the hands of the Creator, like a baby sitting on his mother's hands and that the mother is playing with the baby to wake him up for extra connection to her and the whole environment, the mother uses the whole environment also in order to strengthen the baby because he cannot always remain connected to the mother but when he looks at the others and he grows a little bit more, than he can learn from them and he is connecting to them.
10. S. (19:45) How to turn to the Creator correctly?
R. Turning to the Creator correctly for that you need to be in one of these two states either in a state of request or a state of gratitude. That’s all. Either to say thank you or to ask from Him for something that is considered that you are turning to the Creator. If you have a reason to ask of Him or you have a reason to be thankful to Him, then you can talk to Him and you can be certain that you are connected to Him even though you may not feel His response back to you but the result of the connection between you will come and you will start to feel that you are in an open line with the Creator you and the Creator in an open communication.
11. S. (21:23) It is written in the article that a person needs to pay attention to this and to believe that the Creator is caring for him and to go in faith and the fact that he says that he needs to believe the Creator is caring for him to believe is it in faith above reason?
R. Yes, of course because otherwise it is not faith. What we see in our life, that is not faith, it is that we received some rumor and we accepted it as something that exists. The force of faith is like knowledge.
12. S. (22:30) When we have deep trouble it feels hurtful but at the same time it is awesome because it is time to raise MAN and prayers that gives us a chance to turn to the Creator and does this mean that this will help me to build my Kli?
R. Of course this is enough for you to build a Kli if you have a ten. Then in the ten you know how to advance, to advance towards the connection between you in the group and to find in the connection the force that is common to you which is the Creator when you build him out of the effort in connection. Do you hear me? Hear this again everyone. The ten at least, each and every ten connects between themselves and in the connection between you to establish the inner force that you have and to build this and discover and establish it which is the result of the effort and that same force is called the Creator. This is what we need to try in each and every day to establish between ourselves.
13. S. (24:42) The knowledge comes to us from the sources and the Torah. The faith is coming to us from the Rav and the friends. So, everything is ready for us. What do we need to give in response?
R. We need to establish the situation in the connection between us so that the connection between us will give us the feeling of the Upper Force. We build the Kli like this where the Creator is revealed. The connection between us should be Arvut between all the members of the group and in this Arvut between all the friends in the group we, by bit, we discover how much there starts a joint force between us starts to be established. We call it the Creator; this is called, “you have made Me.”
14. S. (26:24) When a hot air balloon loses height in the air it becomes a burden and the they lose some weight and then it goes up again. You are leading us on the path of Baal HaSulam and of Rabash. Many years ago the Moscow group was split ideologically. A big part continued the spiritual path with B’nei Baruch with the whole word Kli and a small part did not agree to get up at night for the lessons because it was kind of not respectable to wake up so early and they left us. Do you discover not individuals but groups whole groups in the world Kli that are deviating from the path and they are like a burden not enabling us to fly higher to the Creator?
R. We have no burden, we have no burdening from any group or person but rather if we do discover someone that seemingly goes against us seemingly goes against us, ultimately we do discover how much it is help against him. Meaning even though he is opposing us he’s acting in our benefit without his desire.
That’s how it happens, this is one thing and the other thing that I do not pay attention at all to any person or group that leaves us. I barely am interested in people who left or didn’t leave because that’s how it is written that the thousands are walking into the room and only one of them will go to teach and nine-hundred and ninety-nine will leave on the way; just leave. They come again at some time later and join us later again. This is why I am not concerned about anyone. All I need to be concerned about are the ones who are here on the path in the meantime and are interested in hearing the method of Baal HaSulam from my mouth. That's all. 15. S. (29:38) How to have faith in that even during the descent the Creator is watching over us?
R. By the group. Only by the force of the group.
16. S. (30:12) How to work correctly with the descents?
R. Turn them to ascents. Understand that they are here for us by the Creator so we would try to rise and see it is not possible without the help of the Creator and then we will pray to Him: we will ask for forces of ascent from Him.
17. S. (30:52) So the common force between that we build in the ten is the Creator. What is this force and how to build it together in the ten as one?
R. We feel the force of the Creator in each and every effort of us to be together and to rise to extra Dvekut. If we make efforts there in connecting to Dvekut,then we may feel the force acting on us which is the Creator.
18. S. (34:42) I did not fully understand what it means to be in an open line with the Creator, how to collaborate with the Creator, what exactly do I need to do towards the ten?
R. First of all we have to be connected between ourselves and then out of the connection of ours we turn to Him. Otherwise, we will not have a Kli to receive an answer from the Creator.
19. S. (32:26) I wanted to ask whether in above reason there is a reality that you do not agree with the Creator?
R. In above reason there is a reality that you don’t agree with the Creator? That’s interesting, can I hear what that is?
S. I don’t know, I am asking if there is such a thing?
R. To me it doesn't seem that there is. In above reason, no, it cannot be. Within reason, you may bring one-thousand and one arguments but above reason, well, and what’s next?
S. So within reason, it is clear that you don’t agree with many things, in above reason you are adhered to Creator so you have to agree with the whole reality so it’s kind of like there are no mistakes in reality.
R. In the spiritual reality, in faith above reason, there are no mistakes; there are problems, there’s great exertion to reach that, to place the right question, but mistakes, no.
S. But when you look with your eyes you see endless flaws and blemishes.
R. But you are walking above reason.
S. So what has changed, do you want to change the flaws or do you leave them that way?
R. I change my attitude, that everything comes to me from the Creator, from The Good That Does Good and There Is None Else Besides Him, it only comes from Him and I want to adhere Him, adhere with Him and with all my friends and nothing besides do we need.
S. So, are we meant, in the flaws, except for the work in connection between us and come to the state that we want to correct our attitude towards them and rise above reason there, in the flaws, do we need to change something or just leave them?
R. No, of course these flaws we do not touch them, all we need to do is to rise to a state where these flaws, we’ll see them as opposite, good states that are beneficial for us.
S. Simply, it turns out that you are all lifelong engaged in correcting flaws and you are not meant to do that, at all.
R. You have nothing else to do, only to correct these flaws correctly.
S. So how does this inner inversion take place where instead of correcting these flaws you begin to rise above reason?
R. But it is the same thing, rising above reason, that’s called, ‘to correct the flaw’, because you elevate yourself from reason to above reason which is the whole flaw: to be within reason.
S. And in above reason, what is the addition that you receive, what is this value that I hold onto that is not a mistake anymore?
R. In above reason everything falls into place, everything falls into place meaning there is no problem, that I have no problems there, there is no collision between you and the Creator but rather when you rise above reason you accept the Creator to be the only One: The Good That Does Good acting on you with the ten, seeing you before Him, wanting Him to bring you closer to them and only this way He's acting and everything falls into place for you.
S. This ability to rise above reason, is something we acquire, meaning where do you bring this ability to go above reason?
R. Since I see that I can’t come close to it, that I cannot build this quality and the image of the Creator before me, only in such a way where I raise Him as one unique and special force that binds us all together.
S. So this vessel of above reason, is the same vessel when the ten works on connection between itself all the time, this is the vessel that is rising above reason?
R. Again?
S. This vessel through which we look at reality above reason is the same vessel that is the result of the work of connection in the ten, this is the vessel through which everybody looks at the reality in above reason?
R. Yes, for the time being, yes; later we will have some additions, ‘the three lines’, we’ll have all kinds of additions and refinements of this one connection that we have with the Creator, we will see that, but for now it’s like this.
20. S. (38:56) You said previously that from the Creator we receive all kinds of states of adhesion, what does that mean, that “what comes for us from the Creator are states of adhesion”?
R. When the Creator discloses the state of adhesion we work towards that, we discover how much we are not in that, then all kinds of forces of separation are appearing in us.
S. Okay, adhesion has many levels, many stages.
R. Yes, yes.
S. What is the minimum level of adhesion we need in order to go into contact with Him?
R. I think that ‘one will help his friend’ and through that we can talk, strengthen and thus rise, meaning to the extent in which we can hold onto right now, this is the minimum level.
21. S. (40:02) You said that the Creator is something we build out of our efforts to connect in the ten and we establish it between us, the inner force and this is force is what we call the Creator. What do we do with ‘the personal creator’; sometimes it seems to the person that he has one more that is not connected to the ten, we talk to him in the morning, at night. So what do we do with these two?
R. Talk with each and every one, what’s the problem?
S. Who of them is more important, where to invest the most energy?
R. There is no competition between them, it is simply being revealed to you in every state and every form, something a little different.
S. In the ten, out of the connection between us, how can I know what Creator he has and what Creator the other has, how to bring each Creator of each friend?
R. You eventually reveal that it’s all the same thing, you will discover that this force, There Is None Else besides Him, The Good That Does Good, connects everyone, cares for everyone, is revealed in everyone, apart and in each and every one of you, between you and together. You do not need to enter into investigating this because it will only confuse you.
S. If we’re asking for help in the connection from the Creator, that He will help us really feel the friends, to connect the hearts, how can I know what the friend is asking for, what the other friend is asking for, how can I?
R. What you know is enough, that’s enough, what you know, you just need to know one thing: I want to be connected to all of my friends in the ten, heart and soul as much as possible, to simply dissolve in them so that there will be no difference between me and them. And then from you feeling the way, the extent that you disappear there, like Rabash writes, “you’ll discover the zero towards one and the one towards zero”, in his social articles about the ten, there you will start to feel there where truth is, where your future is.
S. Yesterday or the day before we read that seeing the Creator through the friends, when you walk this way there are no mistakes. What mistakes can the person make when he talks to the Creator when there is no ten there, asking from the Creator alone?
R. That always takes him from the egoist direction and who knows what he can get from there: the way he depicts himself his way and the group, and the friends.
S. Sometimes you say anyhow talk to the Creator and ask, no matter what, in corporeality, in spirituality, most important is to connect to Him. But if it leads to a mistake the person thinks that I and the Creator are one and I don’t need to ten, this leads the person off of the path?
R. No, this happens to him on the path as well, this happens to him along the path where he forgets that he is in the ten and scrutinizing his matter in the connection to the friends individually and then again he returns to the ten because he says that he cannot advance individually so much; and this passes. I am happy that there are many questions but it seems to me that it’s all the same, all of them. Well, nevertheless I must ask you, the problem is that many questions are awakening in us because this section is very practical, and therefore I am not running away from these questions but rather feel a commitment to scrutinize, one by one, all of them.
22. S. (44:35) We heard that in every state we need to associate everything to The Good That Does Good, I wanted to ask, The Good That Does Good, the way I understand it, His intention is to do good, many times we are asking to rise above reason. My question is: is there room to ask, to acknowledge His intention to do good, which is more direct request in my eyes?
R. Try everything that you can do with your hands, and your might, and you will see according to your experience what happens. Do not rely on my explanation and your questions, maybe there is, what we call ‘a broken connection between us’. You write it down according to your memory, heart and soul and mind, do this and it should be for you for, for the future as an experience, there is none so wise as the experienced.
23. S. (45:57) A basic question from the ten: we are getting ready for the convention in Almaty and we’re inviting everybody around us, and during this process, the preparation takes your whole attention. How to always be in faith above reason throughout all the actions, no matter what we do?
R. You need to think while you are preparing the convention, while you’re preparing the place for the convention, all the lessons, etc., I don’t know. You need to think how you are preparing a place where the whole world will be able to settle, embrace, connect, incorporate; and for the result of this connection and incorporation of theirs will be the feeling of the Creator that is revealing this form between you, that’s it. When we started to embrace, we felt ourselves holding on, sustaining more and more the connection between us, and suddenly we feel that we are not hugging the friends but instead that is the Creator, Himself that is in this hugging. This is what we need to do so ready ourself for such a Congress!
24. S. (47:43) You answered the friend about the personal Creator. This reminded me of the story of Abraham, that he broke the idols and he did it because he said they were fighting between themselves. My question is what are these spies, you said these are the egoistic qualities?
R. No, no, no. I can’t get into your philosophies. Ask something concrete or what we’re studying right now.
S. How can a person pass on these spies to the authority of the Creator?
R. Only by coming closer to the friends, and all the negative forces or semi-negative ones they're not like characters who will become positive. Many times we discover between us states in which we are contradicting each other. We fight, we get along and then we come to an agreement. So that’s how it is here too, we need to try and seemingly inscribe in our memory cells that at first there were many things that were clashing and are in contradiction and they came to be in agreement.
25. S. (49:59) How to make sure that the quality of spies works for the friends especially when I'm in an ascent?
R. If all the friends try to come close and through their nearing put pressure on the Creator than you compel Him. As it is written my son's have defeated me as they compelled Him to connect you, and for Him to be your connecting force.
26. S. (50:48) Yesterday you gave an exercise to pray for the Kiev group to have electricity. My question is in the ten we were praying and thinking about it together and today I suddenly see they have electricity. Where did the change occur? In my feeling, in the changing reality, loving the friends in Kiev more, caring for them or where here did the reality change in my eyes?
R. That I don’t know. I know what I need to do and what happens afterward and in what way I don’t study.
S. Shouldn't we do a scrutiny?
R. No, no, no. You need scrutinies, then you need to go within reason.

R. Yes.
S. Can there a state where the person is thinking about the Creator all the time but still he's in a descent?

R. Of course from every participation with the friends the Creator enjoys.

R. Faith or knowledge both come from the nearing of two contradicting parts that are towards one another and that’s why it’s good.
30. S. (55:52) What exactly builds the spiritual vessel? When a person feels he is corrected does that build his intention?
R. The spiritual vessel is built from contradicting parts.
31. S. (56:13) When we elevate ourselves in faith above reasons does our intellect also become holy and it leads us to correction?
R. Yes.
32. S. (56:29) Many times you say that when the Creator loves us He strikes us, He sends us work to make exertion. What can I do when it becomes happy, it’s no longer a sad descent as it was, it’s as if there’s less work in this state?
R. This is for the time being, we nevertheless need to thank for everything that we receive from the Creator. The main thing we need to locate is that it is comes from Him. Good states, bad states, it doesn’t matter, as long as it’s from Him.
33. S. (57:11) When we feel an ascent should we prepare ourselves for the descent and if we should then how?
R. We do not need to prepare ourselves for a descent but in a state of an ascent we need to begin to bring these current states of the ascent as if it’s the descent towards the next ascent; as each time I attempt more and more to come closer to the Creator, to agree with Him.
34. S. (57:52) I heard that a person should awaken the whole ten to adhesion, and himself as well. How does that work with the work that we should do to see the ten as if it was already in adhesion? How does a person know how to awaken the ten and how to elevate it so it’s already in adhesion in his eyes?
R. I can’t say about that, if you can find words for me for that please tell me.

R. The Creator is called Boreh, come and see, meaning the next degree is relative to the lower degree, the upper degree relative to the lower degree is called Boreh, the Creator. From that you can understand that you said it correctly.
37. S. (01:03:24) It is written in the article that he runs from exile and he commits suicide. What is the suicide and what can we do in order to prevent the suicide?
R. You cut off yourself from the upper force, from connection with the Creator. That’s called that he puts himself to death.
S. How can a person prevent this?
R. When a person engages in all three things, person, group and friends. These three things have to be observed.
S. Let's say there's a complete darkness and we don't think that something will come out of connection with the friends or that something will come out through asking the Creator. There is zero hope, no expectation, you don't think that something will come out if I connect with friends. Before yes, it did but now it won’t. How to overcome this?
R. Move forward until you once more see that something from the connection arrives.
S. Okay, but is there a spiritual reason that we have nights? I don't have only my corporeal reasons but there are also spiritual reasons according to my experience in connection. To reach the next above reason do I also have to overcome the spiritual reason that I have...?
R. The spiritual reason is only the spiritual reason. The fact that it seems to you like there are corporal reasons that too is a spiritual reason, it all stems from spirituality.
38. S. (01:06:15) Out of these excerpts we read the prayer we built together, is an awakening from below or is it a reward from above?
R. It is usually an awakening from above.
39. S. (01:06:43) If we are successful in realizing the connection in the ten, if we can realize the connection in the ten does that adhesion come automatically or do you have to pray to come to that?
R. It’s best not to wait and to pray in advance. In every state try to be with a request before everything and then you will merit more. Try like a child who is always in request, nudging, asking, demanding and not leaving, everything, even with his nonsense.

R. A mitzvah is the correct action.
44. S. (01:09:49) It is written that he leaves the work and he goes back to his corporeal life which is why it says that the wicked in their lives are called dead. Is this state a state that can happen a few times a day and how to use this moment of falling down to the corporeal life?
R. That's a state that can take place several times a day and he uses it in order to rise from it and to ask the Creator not to drop him into such a state anymore.
45. S. (01:10:34) There is a feeling that advancement, the process of advancement are two opposite things always coming closer. The question is was there something that connected partially and then again there was this fall? So this descent is the discovery of the posterior side of the Creator?
R. Well let's say yes, you’re a scientist, you’re smart, you are trying to constantly put every piece of information into the system. So I understand that tendency but sometimes we need to await these things to gather themselves and do so on their own. You will see how this works and agree with it later.
S. Anyhow, I'll agree. Tell me please, when we connect we discover the common force you talked about. Can we say that this is the first nine?
R. No, I can't say. Of course it's the upper light but it’s the upper illumination that is not yet divided into the ten Sefirot, no.
