Part 1: Baal HaSulam. Letter 14.

Reader: Hello, we are reading Letter number 14. Whoever is asking questions here should ask loud and clear and stand up. Again, the Writings of Baal HaSulam, Letter 14.

Reading Letter 14: (00:38)

10 Shevat, Tav-Reish-Peh-Hey, January 25, 1926, Warsaw

To... may his candle burn:

... And scrutinize well in a thousand weekdays, for they are the paths of the river of knowledge. It is as Samuel said, “The paths of heaven are clear to me,” in the state of Shabbat [Sabbath], as the paths of the river of knowledge, the weekdays. That is, “One who did not labor on the eve of Shabbat, from where will he eat on Shabbat?” Thus, all the lights of Shabbat are set up in lights that are gained during the weekdays. This is the meaning of “a thousand weekdays.”

By this you can understand the verse, “Come to Pharaoh.” It is the Shechina [Divinity] in disclosure, from the words, “and let the hair of the woman's head go loose,” as it is written in The Zohar. The thing is that to the extent that the children of Israel thought that Egypt were enslaving them and impeding them from serving the Creator, they truly were in the exile in Egypt. Hence, the Redeemer’s only work was to reveal to them that there is no other force involved here, that “I and not a messenger,” for there is no other force but Him. This was indeed the light of redemption, as explained in the Passover Haggadah [story].

This is what the Creator gave to Moses in the verse, “Come to Pharaoh,” meaning unite the truth, for the whole approaching the king of Egypt is only to Pharaoh, to disclose the Shechina. This is why He said, “For I have hardened his heart,” etc., “that I may place these signs of Mine within him.”

In spirituality, there are no letters, as I have already elaborated on before. All the multiplication in spirituality relies on the letters derived from the materiality of this world, as in, “And creator of darkness.” There are no additions or initiations here, but the creation of darkness, the Merkava [chariot/structure] that is suited to disclose that the light is good. It follows that the Creator Himself hardened his heart. Why? Because it is letters that I need.

This is the meaning of “that I may place these signs of Mine within him, and that you may tell ... that you may know that I am the Lord.” Explanation: Once you receive the letters, meaning when you understand that I gave and toiled for you, as in, do not move from “behind” Me, for you will thoroughly keep the Achoraim [posterior/back] for Me, for My name, then the abundance will do her thing and fill the letters. The qualities will become Sefirot, since before the filling they are called “qualities,” and upon their fulfillment for the best, they are called Sefirot, sapphire, illuminating the world from one end to the other.

This is the meaning of “that you may tell.” I need all this for the end of the matter, meaning “And you shall know that I am the Lord” “and not a messenger.” This is the meaning of the fiftieth gate, which cannot appear unless the forty-nine faces of pure and impure appear in one opposite the other, in which the righteous falls [forty-nine in Gematria] before the wicked.

This is the meaning of the words, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might ... but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me.” That is, as it is written, “There shall be no one miscarrying or barren in your land.” Miscarrying or barren are the same thing, except “barren” means the deficiency and the letter itself, and “miscarrying” is the filling that the Sitra Achra [other side] gives to fill that deficiency, which is unsustainable, short-lived, and full of anger. At the time of correction, it becomes evident that that miscarrying becomes understanding, and the barren becomes “Know Me.”

This is what the prophet instructs us: “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, or the mighty man of his might,” since all the being and presence that a person feels in himself holds no spirit, neither for the upper ones nor for the lower ones. It is so because there are no innovations in any being or lights. This is the meaning of “maker of light,” meaning that there is no innovation in the light but the making, when one can affect moves over the letters and disclose the shapes of the upper ones.

However, “and creator of darkness,” for created means elicitation existence from absence, as Nachmanides wrote. There is no innovation here but darkness, like the ink for a book of Torah. By the exertion of the servant of the Creator to bring contentment to his Maker and to complement the Creator’s will, the miscarrying and the barren appear. By accepting the burden of the kingdom of heaven to the fullest, which is the meaning of “this,” he is rewarded with seeing the real forms of “maker of light,” through questions and troubles. Then he is rewarded with boasting of the knowledge, and it is known that this is a true gain, praised and desirable in the initial thought.

By this we understand the verse, “And he said to them, ‘May it be so, the Lord is with you’ ... and He drove them out from Pharaoh’s presence.” The whole strengthening of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, was only in the “little ones” who did not know Joseph, who fed them with bread according to the “little ones.” The “little ones” means abundance that is restricted at the time of Katnut [smallness/infancy], as our sages said, “Why do infants come? To give reward to they who bring them.”

This is why he demonstrated his strength on the little ones and said, “See that evil is before your faces. Not so, go now, you who are men,” since one should be thankful for the sparks of Gevurot [pl. of Gevura] in the work of the Creator, and which come through the Creator. But for the sparks of evil before your faces, it cannot be said that it comes from the Creator.

This is why he said, “For it is her that you seek,” meaning that your whole intention is to enhance the sparks of Gevura and enhance the sparks of evil, and how can you unite the evil sparks with the Creator? By this they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.

By this we will understand the plague of the locust, as was said, “And it covered the eye of the earth, etc., and ate that which remained.” That is, because the Creator saw that all the gripping of the king of Egypt (until he expelled them) was in sorting the men and repelling the infants (as in, “for that is what you desire”), the plague robbed them of the quality of men, as well, and they lost all the sparks of Gevura, as well.

By this you will understand the verse of redemption: “This month is to you the beginning of the months.” In Egypt, the month was called Sivan, as they said about Mount Sinai, that Sinaa [hatred] came down from there like the hard labor in Egypt being called, in general, Sivan, like Shanaan, meaning Sinaa Shelanu [our hate], as in, “for it is her that you seek,” and all their efforts were only to delete the letters because they hated them.

And by the light of redemption, when they were rewarded with Alphey [thousands of] Shanaan, that Hidush [initiation (sounding similar to Hodesh—month)] was made the very first. Then, instead of Sivan, the letters joined to form Nissan, meaning Nissim she Imanu [miracles that are with us]. This is what RASHI interpreted about this verse: “‘This month’ indicates that the Creator showed Moses the moon in its beginning,” and the words are ancient.

Yehuda Leib

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (27:22) What does it mean that in spirituality there are no letters? How will we be able to use correctly the letters to exit the darkness?

M. Laitman: This is something that I cannot explain here. We need a bit more time. But we will get there. The thing is that the letters are a picture of forces that act on our desire. And therefore, they don't write it for no reason. They draw them. I cannot explain any more than that. We will go through this together.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (28:56) The exertion of the letters was for them to be hated. What does it mean?

M. Laitman: The letters are the writings of the man when he reads this text. Therefore, when we read this text, by that, we become closer to the letters, to the words, and they change their forces and their qualities.

Student: Meaning I erase these letters, and what does it mean that they were hated? By ego you hate them and you erase them?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (30:05) To continue the matter of the letters, what letters do we need?

M. Laitman: As a matter of fact, we need all the letters. And the truth is that there are not so many. There are twenty-two. These are the aleph-bet for us, from all the others, as we can say. There are some alphabets that there are forty-two to sixty letters, but here it's only twenty-two. We need to understand what each letter means, what is its intention, what combination of forces there are in it. This is a serious business.

When a person starts to study them, and when he not only studies them, he comes closer to the meaning of the letters, then he feels how the letters play with him. Then he starts to read in a different way. He's not in a hurry. Each letter creates a reaction within him. And this way, slowly, gradually, a person starts to feel what the text wants to bring him.

Student: How not to divert our attention when we're going after the Creator?

M. Laitman: First of all, we need to choose the type of texts that are closer to us. This text is very hard, very deep.

Student: What else do we need?

M. Laitman: As a matter of fact, we need to connect to those letters in an emotional way. And then we can understand what the Kabbalist wants to pass to us. It will come with time.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (33:47) In the fourth paragraph it is written. “And you will observe the posterior for Me, for My name and then the abundance will fill the letters.” What does it mean if you observe well the posterior for my name?

M. Laitman: The posteriors are usually vessels of reception. If we use them in front of the Creator, they are to bestow, and the prosperity that comes from the vessels of reception will rise us to Panim. And this way we start to see what kind of secrets or lights are in the letters.

Student: And after that it is written that before the filling, if the measures are connected to the letters, meaning the filling of the letters to also bestow upon our measures?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (35:28) How to come closer to Baal HaSulam?

M. Laitman: Just like to come closer to the Creator.

Student: Because it feels pretty far. When you read Rabash you feel that he is talking about whatever is going on with our hearts. When you read Baal HaSulam, it feels like this exalted high that is unattainable. It's like Chinese, the article we read.

M. Laitman: Yes, this letter is not simple.

Student: What can we do to come closer a little bit to it?

M. Laitman: Gradually, from a week to a week, from letter to letter.

Student: Is it worthwhile to read it just as a virtue, even if we don't understand?

M. Laitman: Rabash wouldn't respect it.

Student: The reading just like that?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: So, to read and try to understand?

M. Laitman: To read it with intention and to try to understand.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (36:46) That feeling that the article causes and the beauty and the work that he describes here. Will we attain that? Will we do this work?

M. Laitman: Yes.

Student: And then it's simply possible to get there? And then we will connect to Baal HaSulam?

M. Laitman: Let's say, yes. I don't think it's in the steps you are depicting to us. We enter, we read, we yearn, and then we reach it, but it's actually true. It's correct.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (37:46) I didn't understand anything in the article, but it is written, something small, that all the multiplication in spirituality is equal to what's in this world. What is taken to spirituality from corporality?

M. Laitman: I cannot explain it. It's a matter of feeling and connection. It won't give you that half a sentence.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (38:39) It's written: “And all the labor of the redemption was just to reveal to them that there is no other force involved, and it's me and not a messenger since there is no force besides Him. And this was the light of redemption, as was described in the Pesach Haggadah.” We are in a period of time where there are these blows, like the blows of Egypt, and it appears like for us too it’s difficult to say: There Is None Else Besides Him. What do we need to really feel this and be able to pass to the people that it's the force of the Creator that's operating, and not...

M Laitman: We need to pass from one to everyone that this is truly well, shaped in us, that There Is None Else Besides Him, there’s one force that works in the whole world. We have no one else to think about, and who to come closer to, only the Creator. He is the source of our life, of our living, and the main thing is our success.

Student: And when we feel that between us, and convince one another that only the Creator stands behind everything that's happening now, it will pass to the people, to the world, it's like this frequency, it will pass, how will it happen?

M. Laitman: Yes, it will also pass.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (40:43) There was a verse, and that it gave birth to the head of the woman, and then comes the Pharaoh. What is this connected to that, and also what's the head of a woman altogether?

M. Laitman: It's the will to receive that are in the vessels, and therefore we will study that, you won't understand it correctly now. It's not something that a woman belongs to a woman, or a man belongs to a man.

Student: There's something else here, it also took from them the matter of the men, so it's probably talking about our different qualities.

M. Laitman: Yes.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (41:52) It was written in the text, that to the extent to which the people of Israel thought that the Egyptians were working them, and that's to the extent to which they truly were in exile. Then there's this, where there's no other force besides Him involved, meaning it depends on the thought of a person?

M. Laitman: Yes, it depends on the thought of a person. Does he under the force that controls him, then it truly controls him.

Student: Meaning if our war is to be in connection all the time, to hold on to There Is None Else Besides Him, the Good That Does Good?

M. Laitman: We need to hold by that, we need to hold tight between us, and in this way, we decide that also in spirituality, we raise our forces above all the other forces, all the other forces of our haters, and by this we progress. This is very important.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (43:11) To continue what was just brought up. I understood that when they think that they're working for the Egyptians, then they're in exile, meaning that they don't understand that they're working for the Creator. But the Creator puts upon himself clothings.

M. Laitman: This is in order for you to try hard to reveal Him, and to work for Him.

Student: Intellectually this is easy. Every day we say to each other, There Is No One Besides Him, it's the Creator, he's hiding, etc.

M. Laitman: Intellectually?

Student: Yes intellectually. There's no problem, the idea is kind of clear.

M. Laitman: And a part of that, mentally?

Student: Now these clothings have influences. Like a person goes to a show. He's impressed, he cries, he laughs, he's excited. How do we penetrate these clothings and receive the message that the Creator wants to give us specifically through these clothings, that he doesn't come in a revealed manner to the Creator and say: Oh you're working me. Once he puts the clothing of Pharaoh, once of a friend, all kinds. How do we talk with the writer of this script? How do we penetrate this costume?

M. Laitman: To try more and more and more, and not by yourself, with other friends.

Student: How do we try, Rav? It's like you're playing.

M. Laitman: No, no, no. But if I hear that this is how the friends talk, I'm very much impressed, very much.

Student: That they're talking now?

M. Laitman: That they talk that they need to take off all the clothings and to see the Creator in each and every action, in every time we meet in our life.

Student: So, we understand that it's the Creator. We see that it's the Creator, but it's like we're not playing this game with him. Okay, I said it's the Creator and I went to sleep. I understood that the Creator did it to me. The Creator said to me, the Creator guided me. But where here is the development within this thing?

M. Laitman: The development is by each and every moment you want to hold it, and therefore, each time you awaken in this that comes closer to you.

Student: What does the Creator expect, that after I said that There's No One Else Besides Him, no matter whatever He's performing upon me right now? What does He expect me to do here?

M. Laitman: He wants by the act that he shows you that you, after all, you will reveal him. That he was twisting everything for you and no one else. That's it. By that, you reveal that it's only Him that exists in the world.

Student: What is revealed?

M. Laitman: Revealed is that There Is None Else Besides Him.

Student: What is discover? Am I living in a different reality?

M. Laitman: You feel the whole of reality that you live in, that the Creator stands behind it and He shows it to you.

Student: And what does he want from me?

M. Laitman: That you will hold in it all the time. That's it. We don't need anything else. You try and you see how it's not simple. You don't need to know anything but this rule, that There Is None Else Besides Him. That's it.

Student: What's the difference, Rav, between us? We're saying it. We're always complaining about this. It's the Creator, even in the first moment.

M. Laitman: I don’t understand those words, I’ll believe in it. Do I in each and every moment reveal and feel that what works on me, that this is the Creator?

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (47:58) I believe the women are asking, so us men have to also ask, I think.

M. Laitman: It's about time. Where are we?

Student: If we've been freed from Egypt, do I need to open the Red Sea in order to reach love of friends?

M. Laitman: Part the sea? You need to invest yourself in love of friends until you reach it. This is not simple.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (48:38) I am from the Haifa Ten group. We're about thirteen guys. I studied a thing in Kabbalah that you should say there's too much or not enough. It's both praiseworthy and shouldn't be denied.

M. Laitman: I’ve known you for years now, and you also come here every now and then with your group. I can't say that you don't progress.

Student: I feel that we're not advancing if we won’t make a center and weekly, daily, several times a week, or whatever, as much as possible. Each of us invites the group once a month. And that meeting is kind of like a great, big, holy meeting. And what I want, if it's possible, maybe rent a place or something like that, if someone can, and if it's not impossible, I have room in my home, I can do it in my house.

M. Laitman: We can do that in every morning lesson, whenever you want when you come together, and I'll turn to you, and you will answer or ask questions, and this way we will do some part of the morning lesson as a connection between us.

Student: I'm asking, and I want to invite you to my home, dear Rav. If it's possible, please. If it's possible, I'm awaiting the answer.

M. Laitman: Thank you very much. I will try.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (50:52) What he was asking was whether to put centers, like we used to have centers all over the country, so he was asking if it's worthwhile now to make a center where the whole group will be able to gather every morning. That's when I understood the question. Because after Covid, there were no centers, and now he's asking if we should do that.

M. Laitman: I think, yes, they should, because there won't be any more events such as Covid, and this way we can hold and get strengthened.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (51:45) Pharaoh says, come unto Pharaoh. If I enter with the Creator into the king's hall, the Pharaoh's hall, in a good case scenario, I enter because I want to see how the Creator is beating Pharaoh, or how Good That Does Good absolutely is. What I practically see is that in a good case scenario, the Creator is beating that which is dear to me, my brother, and in a bad case scenario, I see the Creator as my brother.

I know that this happens, as he writes here, that my heart is filthy. And instead of abundance, I see the corruption, and I practically feel on my body and my heart the pains of my brother. My question is, what should I pray for? How do I need to pray so that my brother won't receive blows because of me? He's the dear one to me.

M. Laitman: Are you sure that by that, that you don't make it he receives the blows because of you?

Student: Yes. I am the reason for the blows. There's no one but me that's causing it.

M. Laitman: Yes. So, why the other gets the blows?

Student: Because he's dear to me. And I make him important. So, the Creator is showing me through him, meaning that I'm not yet coming to the correct state of seeing Him as the Good That Does Good to the good and the wicked. I don't have the possibility to justify the Creator in any way. No matter what I do, the pain that I suffer if my brother was receiving the blow, I don't have the possibility to come from there to justify the Creator.

M. Laitman: This is worse than if you would receive the blows.

Student: About me? I don't care. Let him cut me. I don't care. I just don't want to hurt my friend.

M. Laitman: So, we need to pray.

Student: So that is what I’m asking. When I am being coerced to see this state and I see this state and I feel it. What do I need to pray for the Creator to calm down in this sin?

M. Laitman: You need to do everything that the Creator demands. Everything. Until you will see that He stops the blows. He does it in a way that can come to you. Otherwise, He cannot do that. Otherwise, you will run away from all His actions. By this action, He knows that he stabbed you in the most painful spot of yours.

Student: You said to ask from the Creator. What exactly do I say to Him? What do I ask from Him? What do I ask, give me the ability to justify You. What am I asking from Him so that for this He will stop? He won't stop, but for the scene will change to my being able to see that He is Good and Does Good.

M. Laitman: That's why the work is hard. That's what you need to ask for.

Student: That exactly to ask for?

M. Laitman: Exactly that. That you will have the force to justify Him and to bless Him that He is Good and Does Good.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (56:11) With the letters that the Creator gave us, did He also give us free choice with them?

M. Laitman: Yes, of course.

Student: Where is the free choice exactly? In what?

M. Laitman: The choice is in my response with what is going through me, how I scrutinize the matters, how I put them in front of me, and how I choose. Out of everything, I scrutinize how to turn to the Creator.

Student: Aleph, Beth, Gimel what is the choice in that?

M. Laitman: First of all, say thank you. Thank you is for that the Creator does not forget. Whatever happens, the worst that can, that I feel but here I don't feel the other way. The Creator wants me to come closer to Him. He wants to teach me, but it still comes from Him to make it good for me, so I can rise above to a higher degree. Therefore, I need to thank Him in everything.

Student: First of all, it is gratitude, and then is it worthwhile for me to depict these letters, Aleph?

M. Laitman: I don't think so. It is only going to get you confused.

Student: But I feel that when I write the letters Aleph, Beth it gives me a certain feeling.

M. Laitman: I don't think we are ready for that. Maybe soon we will start and then we will study all the letters and with the internal identification, and this is what it says in part one, part Aleph, about the letters.

Student: I really know about this that if we were to open up the letters it would be great.

M. Laitman: I think yes.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (59:49) To reveal the Creator depends on coming closer to Pharaoh. How to come closer to Pharaoh?

M. Laitman: Pharaoh and Creator are, as a matter of fact, the same. Pharaoh and Creator. But it is how you or the person receives the upper abundance. Truly There Is None Else Bbesides Him. By that, you erase all the differences between them, and you want, that instead of them you want to see just one force managing everything. Governs everything.

Student: In order to know the Creator what signs do I need to see?

M. Laitman: What for? I need to see the Creator in everything. The most negative things, it all depends on His clothing, but it is all one force, None Else Besides Him.

Student: I can't filter it. According to what filters do I need to see all this, all these clothings?

M. Laitman: First of all, you need to try to see the Creator's action behind each and every force that influences you. That the Creator is doing it, and None Else but Him. That you shape Him in this way that only He is in front of you. And after that, you need to pay attention that you receive His way in a manner of Good and Does Good. And there is nothing but that.

Whenever you don't feel this force, the good and does good, then it depends on you that you are not in front of his face. And by that slowly, slowly you will start to see our world where there is only the influence of the Creator. Only one force and None Else Besides Him.

Question (Petah Tikva Center): (1:03:12) If the Creator lets you see that behind reality there is None Else Besides Him, and then He takes you out of that for a long period of time, should you agree to this for the time being because that is also the will of the Creator?

M. Laitman: It is not important what He does with you. You need to bow your head down and to receive Him in any way that is good and does good. Don't replace Him with any other force and don't think about Him but that He is only good and for your own good.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:04:00) It is written in the text: “Observe well the posterior for my name and then the abundance will do its own and fill the letters and the measures will become Sefirot.” What is the meaning of to observe the posterior?

M. Laitman: Everything comes from Him and you receive it just the way it comes from the Creator and in this way, you organize your vessels.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:04:42) I wanted to ask about this matter that it is enough to see that There Is None else Besides Him. and He does good. and He is stabbing us, awakening us. Even if I see this I have this fear that I won't be able to answer Him appropriately or to give the response appropriately.

M. Laitman: This always will be like that.

Student: So, it is right for us to have this pressure?

M. Laitman: And more so. The more we advance we are scared that it will run away from us, the fear and the sensitivity.

Student: I also wanted to ask from the article. He writes here that all the work in Egypt, all our hard labor is called our hatred, on the way that you are asking and all their exertion is just to erase the letters because they hated them. What is the hatred in Egypt, the hatred for the letters?

M. Laitman: That the letters are the form of relation, and in the exile of Egypt we received blows for everything, that we were not well organized towards the upper vessels but by that we got closer to the right way.

Student: What is the hatred? The hatred for the work?

M. Laitman: For the labor and also for the blows, that the person cannot treat them in the right way.

Student: Why does he write if there is a lot of this hatred, these hatreds multiply and it become inverted letters?

M. Laitman: Yes, we will see it on ourselves.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:06:51) To continue that question, everything comes from the Creator. Here in the article, it is written, those illuminations from the Creator, the face of Pharaoh was burdened, how to understand these lines, all the evil that comes, comes from us?

M. Laitman: From us.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:07:33) We receive light and feel the influence of the reforming light only when we read books in Hebrew or the influence of the light can be felt or come closer to even when we read it in our mother-tongue?

M. Laitman: You can in the mother's language.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:08:07) Today I felt that if it is bad for me then it is even worse for the Creator and if it hurts me then it hurts the Creator more.  Is it possible to use this as motivation to get something for him? And the question is: Is it just more love towards him to do everything for him? How to discover that love? Where to take it from?

M. Laitman: To calm down and slowly to receive this soft treatment towards the Creator this way.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:09:19) It is written in there, for it said that is what you ask meaning your whole intention is to enhance the sparks of evil. And how will you be able to disclose these sparks of evil to the Creator? What does it mean to increase the sparks of good or bad?

M. Laitman: These are things that we still don't understand.

Student: May I ask another question “…the filling that the Sitra Achra gives us in order to fill the deficiencies that exist.” How are these deficiencies corrected so that they will be filled with light?

M. Laitman: Slowly, slowly it will fill up, although we don't take it into account.

Question (W Petah Tikva Center): (1:10:23) We have a few more days that we will have afternoon lessons here physically. A lot of Russian speaking friends came. Will you be able to give us a lesson in Russian like you used to do once?

M. Laitman: Not like this? something else? You come to the morning lesson, you can come to the noon lesson. I don't have any other lessons.

Student: Once you would give a lesson in the Russian language. Maybe it's worthwhile to do an afternoon lesson in Russian. We have three more such lessons till the end of the holiday.

M. Laitman: No. Whoever comes here needs to learn Hebrew.
